    How far forward your upper body goes during the downswing dictates angle of attack and swing direction. Keeping your head behind the ball (I explain exactly what that means in this video!) creates a shallow angle of attack, better compression, higher shots and more speed. I share slow motion video of Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson doing this in their swings - with a wedge, iron and a driver. I also share two great golf drills at the end for keeping your head behind the ball in the golf swing.

    Everyone tells you to get your weight forward in the downswing, but they forget to tell you to keep your head behind the ball. Learning this is what resolved my fat contact and sliced ball flight.

    Eric this is a good one for me. I was going to an instructor and he said I was getting too far ahead and my release was late. By product of watching too many videos of holding lag perhaps? As you mentioned you know your fault. The key is to see your swing on video and understand the fault so you can immediately exaggerate the opposite movements to find middle.

      @@CogornoGolf TBH in this order helped me just in case you wanted feedback. I am not a talented golfer but I can get around now. Grip, turning the lead shoulder down (which was a brilliant video and so true) and this staying behind the ball. I noticed this with my own swing the idea of getting on the lead foot for many means shifting the whole body which positions you way ahead of the ball and leads to disasters. I noticed if the trail shoulder is working correctly it sort of organically keeps you behind the ball.

  • @TriviaJockey
    @TriviaJockey 2 роки тому +1

    I do love this because on video I clearly move my head toward the target on the downswing. HOWEVER, when I try to keep my head back near where it started, it keeps my weight back in my LOWER body as well - I can feel a TON of weight/pressure in my right (trail) toes. How does one transfer most of the weight to the left leg while keeping the upper body back?

    I think the importance of this swing key can NOT be understated. So many swing faults can be fixed by learning how to coil and uncoil BEHIND the golf ball.
    What made this all come together for me and later for others I’ve instructed (my friends/family), is to get them to focus their swing intention on the hitting of the golf ball and not on trying to swing the club down the target line towards where they want the ball to end up. It’s a subtle distinction but what I noticed was with a target oriented swing intention, it pretty much forces you to start moving your body forward and down the target line (early extension/early release) before you’ve even hit the ball! Whereas, if you make the striking of the golf ball your swing intention, you very naturally stay in the shot and behind the ball and the finish takes care of itself. Watch slow-mo footage of major league bball batters in action and you see this as well - their lead leg strides towards the target but their upper body and head stay behind the ball as they uncoil their swing AT THE BALL. Maybe some oversimplification there but that’s the gist of it. 😊. Good stuff!

    How weird is this.? Last night at the range, my friend who is a scratch player was helping me work on this very same thing, mainly with the driver. It was very enlightening to see when done correctly how far I could fly ball even with a less than 1/2 swing. Just to note, I was very handsy, and was throwing my right shoulder out. Very glad you posted this Eric, as it gives me a great visual and I can come back to this when I stray from doing this correctly...Thanks

    Hi Eric,I've always had a hard time with the concept of keeping my head back and shifting my weight forward! So I tend to move my upper body and head towards the target to get the weight onto my left side........can it feel like when you get the pressure into your left foot you are kind of pushing back into the ground to keep your upper body and head back??

    Would your head moving forward not result in low point too far ahead of the ball, i.e. thin as opposed to fat? My low point point is too far forward and the feeling of the head staying back seems to help.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 місяці тому

      Yes it for sure can...
      With irons you want your head to move forward only a very little bit from top of backswing to about left arm parallel in downswing (so only like first foot or so)
      Then it stays back until arms parallel in follow through

  • @joevelte4252
    @joevelte4252 5 років тому +1

    one other benefit is that to get to the loaded position on your back leg your head doesnt have to sway much at all. If you setup with the ball in the middle of your head then you have to move your head to get to the loaded position too much.

    Why didn't you show the ball in the pro swings, just to show how far their head is behind it at impact?

    Everyone knows that guy who's short, yet hits it 50 yards farther than you.

    This video is seriously compromised by the guy directly behind you Eric. Very distracting when trying to follow your presentation.

    Your videos are very informative, but try staying away from your condescending remarks. “Some people get that correct” when talking about Adam Scott’s head in the circle.
