  • Richard Linklater on the Identity, Music, & Motives in The Hit Man
Richard Linklater joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the film The Hit Man, starring Glen Powell and inspired by an unbelievable true story about a strait-laced professor who discovers his hidden talent as a fake hit man before meeting his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Linklater, the iconic director/writer behind Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, and Boyhood, tells us why he’s been wanting to find a way to tell this story for twenty years and how matching up with Powell finally put the pieces in place. The director also found a way to drop in a few of his trademark existential conversations into the script, and he discusses with Meredith how our sense of identity and who we imagine ourselves drives the story. We also hear a bit about his thoughts on the movie’s New Orleans-based soundtrack and the different ways he approaches storytelling, especially in the upcoming adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along.
