- Minister for Women and Equalities Kemi Badenoch has said she wants a personal apology from David Tennant, following his call for her to 'shut up'. Why are celebrities so determined to get involved in politics? How has trans ideology changed the face of pride? Comedian and broadcaster Andrew Doyle joins The Spectator's Lukas Degutis to discuss.

Well said, Andrew. Tennant was disgusting. I feel sorry for his daughter.

I agree. She should have at the most just given a very vague statement saying that she does not engage on social media with people in the entertainment industry regarding such issues. It is pathetic that she brought her colour and his into it. As does the left. Thank God the Tories are going, they’re a shower of shite.
I think a much more worthy festival would be to celebrate people like Andrew Doyle and Douglas Murray who don't deny their sexuality but don't make it the be-all and end-all of who they are. And more importantly who make extremely pertinent and significant contributions to our culture. That really is worth celebrating.

I think we are fed up with politicians who are full of it. Nothing to do with racism it misogyny. But Tenant has opened himself up to ridicule and disrespect.
In Helsinki Finland they had a pride-march last weekend and I saw photos with both pride-flags and lots of palestinian flags too.. For some reason they did not bring any Finnish flags along.. 🤪
I don't know what "the pride" is, but it is definitely not about gay rights anymore.. 🥴
Pride march is no longer about gay rights. It’s a parade of gender exhibitionists and fetish. The idea of the rainbow flag flying alongside a Palestinian flag does my brain in. Yes he did really mean that women should shut up .the trans movement is misogynistic
I've been saying that for years
he has made no further comment, no "actually although I disagree with Kemi Badenoch, the words i chose were inappropriate. It is not right to tell a woman she should shut up and i apologise for that. In the context he was clearly talking about Badenoch in her capacity as minister against equalities, but only for one more day and then we can be free of this awful awful government
So should all women just keep their mouths shut when being raped and assaulted? David Tennant has 4 other daughters, is he not bothered about their safety and wants them to keep their mouths shut.! 🤔
Tennant is talentless. He is also lying to his son. Fed up of the "Be Kind... OR ELSE" lot.

@@ph8077 exactly, I think we will look back on this period of history in 20-30 years time with almost as much shame as we do with eugenics (which everyone was practicing to some degree early 1900s). Asking ourselves, what did we do? What did we permit to be done? I know this pales in comparison as often it is voluntary (nobody is forced) but there is a lot of peer pressure and spin on it especially for impressionable youth who are easily swayed and have hormones everywhere. My niece decided to be a 'boy' for about 2 years, no surgery luckily but she passed through it.

If ‘shut up’ and the same gesture was made to a male you’d hardly call it ‘misandry’ or something like that would you?

I keep seeing this kind of argument. You're missing the greater point: It's not about you being a woman / a woman saying it, it's an ideology that despises actual feminism and actual masculinity and the binary and differences that exists there. It wishes to homogenise us like a new packet of plasticine being mushed, taking the bright vibrant colours and reducing them down to a miserable brown-green homogeneous sludge. They wish to do this on all fronts, ethnicity included. The people who drive this say that they wish diversity but all the while to seek to remove all differences.
As for being told to shut up on this subject: Women although getting a lot of resistance, get to speak louder than *men who oppose this* I can assure you of that.

David Tennant has appalled me over this. How does he not see that others are being harmed by this. And if he thinks people should be free to be what they are, then how does he explain the trans activists attacks on lesbian groups. Lesbians and Gay men are entitled to choose to have sexual partners that are of the same sex. Heterosexual people are entitled to say they choose someone they opposite sex.

Perhaps Tennant could be useful and speak out against the Muslim men who kicked and punched to the ground the two young lesbian girls in Halifax, Canada. The LGBT Queers for Palestine alliance should sort their priorities out.
Lawrence Fox was cancelled and sacked from GBN for an insult towards a woman - who had used the same insult against a man ( but that’s okay, of course). So, shouldn’t calling for someone not to exist be taken a lot more seriously? We are talking about a lady who is known to the public. I think his comment is actually quite dangerous and could result in some nutcase attacking her.
its an absolute double standard.
Lawrence fox is a misogynist piggy. He had the perfect opportunity to take what she said, which was disgusting, and get her sacked, but his misogyny raised to the service, and he flucked up the chance. He let everyone down.
Incitement? Yes! Hate speech? Definitely! Where are those lovely British bobbies with an arrest warrant for Tennnant?
I believe both comments should be taken a lot LESS seriously.
I mean, if we're going to make decisions and base all our actions in "what some nutcase could do", where would it end? What if he said "McDonald's is sh***" and some nutcase blew up a restaurant?
My point is, we've gone way overboard with policing speech, regardless of who's speaking to whom. We started treating a childish "drop de***" statement same as if someone actually sh*t someone. Someone insulted someone, so effing what? there is a HUGE chasm between telling a woman she's "a dumb bi**o" and taking away her opportunities, denying her a job or destroying her career.
I'm not defending anyone Personally here; but we've started taking one snapshot out of someone's life, one statement, said under a certain set of circumstances; and judging their WHOLE LIFE and their whole MORAL ETHOS on it. Just because someone made a mysogynist or whatever statement, doesn't immediately make them an actual mysogynist. Just like telling someone "drop dead" isn't a death threat, nor does it mean the person is a murderer.
Everyone needs to bloody relax . And before you flame me - I'm a woman.

Andrew Doyle do not so easily dismiss Tennant's "doesn’t exist anymore" comment, as just a quip. I know I found it truly shock and abhorrent, and I wasn't directed at me, I can only guess how it was received by Kemi Badenoch MP.
Agreed, it was in no way a quip, it wasn't witty or humorous, it had rather sinister undertones, evidenced by the fact he quickly corrected by saying he meant no actual harm to come to her. I think it was meant as many, including Kemi Badenoch herself, have interpreted it to be...
There's also clips of him being interviewed on the red carpet at the same event where he is quite venomous as he angrily calls women who speak out "whinging little fkrs". Lovely.

Doctor Who has a long history of politicised content. In the Jon Pertwee era of the early '70s there was more than one storyline involving all-powerful, corrupt bosses and the workers who had to organise and unite in order to prevail. But it was handled with a great deal more subtlety than the sledgehammer-weighted propaganda we see today. For gawd's sake, Davros would never have given a damn about pronouns.
Andrew please don’t make excuses for David Tennant, I didn’t know anything about this issue a year ago but I made it my business to educate myself. Apparently Mr Tennant has a non binary child, if so then I would have expected him to find out all he can on the subject.
Sure, he could've easily found out had he cared enough
he also has a daughter and presumably wants her to be safe in the school toilets (unlike the girls in a school in Essex with gender neutral toilets who were raped by a boy in the school) and to have opportunities to play sport.
Every celebrity has at least one LGBT kid. But that’s just a coincidence 👀.

I agree, I’m gay and believe Pride is past it’s sell by date
I agree too. The original objectives of Gay Pride were to protest against discrimination, harassment and inequality, and to give closeted people a chance to come out in a supportive atmosphere. Those objectives have now largely evaporated, at least here in the UK and in most other civilised western countries. Pride, as it is now called, is simply a carnival, which gives various fetishists, exhibitionists and nutcases an opportunity to make pillocks of themselves in public. It is high time to ring down the curtain.
Be yourself, but Pride is a Communist Agenda to separate Gay people from their National heritage, and family, hence the rainbow flag, and the laughable Queers for Palestine, are those people deluded🤔
It's no longer about proving gays, lesbians and transexuals are common people who go by their lives like everybody else and deserve to be treated as equals in society. Now it's about making non-straight the ideal to be achieved, as some sort of superior life(form? style?) everybody should adhere and celebrate. It's mind boggling.

I'm not sure I agree with Andrew Doyle's point at the beginning. I am not sure Tennant was calling for Badenoch to be executed, as such, but I don't think there is an innocent or harmless way of hoping for someone 'not to exist'. You can see he chokes on it himself. But it is incoherent to say in one sentence that you look forward to the time someone doesn't exists and then claim you mean her no harm. It was an absolutely repulsive thing to say in public. Truly disgusting. Is this 'kindness' taught by hoping for someone not to exist?

Quite right, gay pride has had its day. Now just mainstream. Would like to see special days and months done away with. There should be a return to normal commemoration days.
It's not gay pride anymore for we've won their fight for them, now we fight for all the others who haven't yet been graced with the liberation the gay folk have
The first problem is that we are tolerating abusive ad hominem attacks rather than insisting on reasoned debate and polite disagreement. Secondly, while Tennant is perfectly entitled to criticise Kemi Badenoch's views; he is not entitled to take away her human right to have views and express them. Amplifying this is the gendered nature of the attack - because women are routinely told to shut up, be silent, not to talk too much and be listeners (to male views). Inside the average mixed sex classroom you can see this in action. Research shows that teachers spend far more time (two-thirds more) with boys, asking them more questions, providing more feedback and allowing them to interrupt more. They push boys to think critically while praising girls for being quiet and neat. It's even worse if you're a black girl, because then you're not just subjected to this closet misogyny but are also criticised for being disobedient, defiant and difficult.
This ultimately translates into criticism of adult women in the workplace for being 'assertive'. While assertiveness in men is seen as good, assertiveness in woman makes them 'strident', difficult and unlikeable. Women are routinely talked over or ignored in so many contexts, they see it as normal and begin self-silencing. This means decisions, ideas and analysis don't have the benefit of a female perspective and so are frequently not optimal. It affects relationships between men and women as well, with members of both sexes unable to have reasonable discussions with one another.
So I appreciate Andrew Doyle's thoughtful comments on this, but it's worse than suggested. Tennant's comments are part of a misogynistic playbook that professional women are still subjected to and thus have much wider resonance than affecting just one, individual woman. The sniggering you heard at the event is the same disrespectful sniggering heard in classrooms and boardrooms when women speak up. It's boring, childish and counterproductive. So easy and popular to criticise the woman rather than criticising a man - why not say that you don't want Sunak to exist/shut up because he's the PM and he says you can't change sex? And then we have the problem of women being threatened with humiliation, loss of earnings/career, vi*lence and r*ape just for disagreeing with (some) men.
Better communication would make the world better for everyone and teaching our kids how to communicate effectively, take turns, disagree in an acceptable way, develop listening skills and critical thinking, and debate politely are very important life skills not being adequately taught in UK state schools. These are skills, however, that Andrew Doyle displays throughout this interview which is why (irrespective of whether we agree or not) it's so nice to listen to him.
Always great to listen to Andrew Doyle
He’s highly intelligent, very articulate and promotes free speech ,

Last autumn I went to Manchester Pride for the last time ever. I was excited for the partying and opportunity to catch up with some old friends. I put on a camp outfit for the first time ever and took my good camera with me. I took about 5000 shots of the parade, and only when I went back through them did I realise the horrors within. It's turned into a sexual fetish freak show where they insist on it being family friendly and some of the parade participants were actual toddlers walking amongst fully grown men in leather dog masks and the like. Interspersed with brazen commercialism and 'the trans lot' I only ended up going on the one afternoon, going home early and not bothering with the rest of the long weekend.
It's been ruined by the likes of Stonewall collecting new 'groups' of 'victims' to add to the alphabet soup and the silly flag, just to justify their own continued existence.

I'm a heterosexual male and it sickens me that another man could find his way into a women's prison or lavatory just by claiming to be transgender.
There was some such person on Camilla Tominey's programme a while back, claiming that he had certification to prove he was a woman and should be free to enter women only spaces. The arrogance, egotism and entitlement was breath taking.
If he really did care about women's spaces he should accept the fact that, while he probably is no threat to women, others could well be. If he is allowed in the argument against other transgender claimants also entering are moot. As a latino, sassy, fem, fervent homosexual I 100% agree with Andrew!
Let me say this emphatically. Tom Baker was the best Doctor Who. All the rest shouldn’t exist. 😁
Shouldn’t exist?? Nooo you’re not going to do Patrick Troughton dirty like that! 😊
@@cameronkobe7838 ha ha 🤣
The Tenant speech seems to be muted.
Sorry. What are we bring proud of?
God knows but it's a sad existence to ram it down everyone's throat year after year. It's just boring.
@@FindThisArtistit's now a clown train.. 🙄 🤡
Fetishes mostly
Good question. I happen to be heterosexual, big deal. It is just a fact, and I do not feel the need to express pride or dismay as to my sexuality. Surely the whole point of equality for all, including in the matter of one's sexual preferences, is that it is not a matter of needing to either hide or display it. Just be everyone.
People who are not straight were made to feel ashamed for many, many years. The pride movement is about no-one being able to make you feel lesser just because of who you are.
even an insect can tell the diff between m/f
Thank you for voicing this. Far too few realise this. It has affected my family badly - I have lesbian/Bi step/daughters.
Pride has had its day.
No kidding.
Understatement city!
A BULLY CAN STILL BE POLITE
A FEMINIST MAN CAN STILL BE
SEXIST
A KIND PERSON CAN STILL BE HORRIBLE....
Well said Andrew 👏
Just for balance , my partner and I are both gay. We have attended many prides which does not indicate our permission , rather our deeply held belief that pride is ours and our visibility is important.
Doyle is going very easy on those psychos
Andrew Doyle is a national treasure. The first time he came on my radar I then investigated him and immediately heard the Alice B Toklas genius bell tinkle. I recognised his genius immediately. He's an exceptional, unique, highly valuable individual. I think he's wonderful.
Actors: People who pretend to be someone they are not and memorise the dialogue written for someone who doesn't exist by someone who is inventing a narrative.
The real David Tennant is a great actor, not a philosopher, physician or politician.
I was incredibly hyped for the 60th anniversary specials with David Tennant. I have been watching the show since 2005 and for the 10th doctor and Russell T Davies to return was super exciting. But I felt demoralised after that first special. Even though Jodie Whittaker’s tenure certainly wasn’t a highlight either (although there were some good things), for me, Tennant’s return killed Doctor Who for good.
Love listening to Andrew. He talks the truth.
Brilliant Andrew ❤
Nobody should shut up about anything.
Damn right, Andrew.
Thank you.
Bridgetown had a truple!😂 also the 'fat' chick got the hot guy with abs!!! 😂😂😂😂
A truple, what's that? I've heard of 'throuple' though.
