The Sexiest Q5 Is Also The Least Practical | Audi Q5 Sportback

- You can look at the Sportback Q5 in two ways: as a less practical Q5 or as a more practical A4. Oddly enough I'm fine with however you want to think of Audi's liftback crossover.

I think people believe you may be biased against certain cars because they don't understand how auto journalists gain access to vehicles for reviews. Maybe that could be an interesting 'behind the scenes' video for AoA.
I really don’t care how he gains access. I believe he’s been doing this for years and is part of an Auto journalist construct. I’m interested in vehicles and he provides comprehensive reviews that are bar none when you actually pay attention. You’re being contrary just to be contrary.
work in the car industry
I love this, have that exact one. Bought a Toyota highlander . Sold it 6 months later to get the Q5, thanks for the video. My favorite vehicle ... tried them all.
I have this car in ultra blue and love it - drive is incredible and plenty of room - everything is top notch !
Have you loaded up the Q5 with people or luggage? If so, how is the power in those situations?
@@bc67 I have no need to load it up - 2 boys in college and it’s just me and the wife
It is so smooth - fast / tech is incredible and love the blue color 🔥
I really worry about rear leg room for adult
I have the exact same car. Was genuinely impressed by the quality of road noise and ride quality and how perfectly blended it is with handling. Giving the relatively cheap price this car is just too nice. GLC feels so weak and tractor like compared to this
@David Jung no way lol. I had a GLC as a courtesy vehicle when I brought my GLS in for service. Horrible car, slow and loud
I bought Q5 45 TSFI premium plus recently but with some shortage options with no power steering adjustment , no leg extenders, no Audi phone box. I test drove X3, QX50, GV70, GLC300 and RX350 before buying this. Q5 45 sline drives like charm. Handling is better than others and enough spacious than GV70 , GLC300 and X3. MPG is a big plus point , music system is excellent but infotainment options that we get for the price is not great. No heads up display and I am not getting maps on virtual cockpit. I don’t know about how maintenance cost is going to be but you won’t feel boring while driving .
I prefer the regular Q5 to this, for the same reason I prefer the regular GLC to the coupe. It just looks better without the sloping roofline.
It’s a dated wagon. No pizzazz
Love your reviews. I bought one of my cars based on your review.
Which one
Q5 55e plug-in hybrid.
Bought A 2023 Q5 TSFI premium Plus sport line black optics my first Audi I told the Sales manager The only car I like more than my Q5 is my next one ! Smooth Quiet and quick !
Saying that the design of crossovers like this is sort of like a mullet is probably one of the best illustrations I have heard in a while LOL
I loved the car seat videos, those are what brought me to your channel to start with. Looking forward to what comes next.
Everyone else don’t review the rear seats in detail. Alex has cornered the market on back seat reviews. Now if only some would show the hump on the second row. With more EVs now, there’s no more excuses for a hump in the 2nd row.
Thanks for mentioning Stelvio.....gets overlooked a lot in comparisons.
Because it’s fun but also very unreliable because you know. It’s practically an fca product
Errm the a/c, etc does continue to run during stop/start engine shutdown as it is a mild hybrid with a 12V Lithium battery in addition to the standard battery.
I just updated my 2018 Q5 2.0T with a new 2022 and was very surprised with the differences between the two. The cabin is much quieter, the ride quality better, the suspension has been retuned, and feels peppier and faster with improved fuel economy. All things that I wasn’t expecting. I was considering an X3 for a change. The previous Q5 was the most reliable vehicle that I’ve ever owned, had absolutely no issues, providing a very safe robust drive even on a trip that I had to travel for 70 miles on a road completely covered in snow, safely driving at 60-70 mph on all season tires, while others where going at 30-40mph. On the new one, I’m really enjoying the lack of wind noise and how much smoother it rides over unevenness and holes. I like the touchscreen being very responsive and don’t miss the control wheel, something that surprised me. The seats are very comfortable, however I do miss the sport seats from my 2018. Despite the voice recognition working well it’s very slow, the navigation sucks, it’s sluggish to load and when I tell an address, having to confirm twice, yes I want to go there now, is nonsense. Much faster to call up Siri for navigation, despite Carplay also being slow to initiate. Another issue is that there is no way to default to play music on SiriusXM, whenever Carplay starts the radio stops and have to press the radio button to resume playing music on Sirius. I hope Audi fixes these issues on future updates, because everything else is perfect or very good. I really enjoy driving my Q5 everyday, which now feels like a smaller car, a pleasure for driving around town. Glad I chose the Q5 over the X3.
Do u fill ur q5 with regular or premium gas and is there a major difference?
@@ashsmart6895 I use regular, as per dealer recommendation. I used premium when gas was cheap and the difference was barely noticeable in power and no difference in fuel consumption, definitely not worth the more expensive premium gas. I tested with the new one as well with the same result.
@@htenthusiast2897 how many years have u had them? The dealer is trying to scare me that knocking will happen if I use 87
@@ashsmart6895 that is interesting because when I bought the first Q5 that I owned for 4 years and over 60k miles the dealer was the one telling me to use regular gas. The second Q5 I got from another dealer and he also told me that they use regular for the Q5. All modern VW/Audi engines have sensors to adjust the engine based on the gas octane. You really only feel the octane difference with hard sporty driving at high RPM, at low RPM the torque is giving you most of the power which is not impacted by the lower gas octane.
@@htenthusiast2897 right that makes sense that today's engines should be able to adjust to prevent knocking.
I don’t understand the whole "crossover coupe" trend. This certainly looks better than the hideous GLE350 coupe or X4/X6. But all of them look worse than their normal shaped crossover stablemates, and it cuts back on both rear headroom and cargo space/practicality.
Totally agree, they just look like bloated, lifted sedans. For buyers that “need” a higher seating position I guess.
Agreed. The Q5 Sportback may be the most tolerable of all "crossover coupes" but all are ugly, compromised vehicles
it's subjective as far as appearance goes. I think Porsche cayenne coupe looks pretty good
Different strokes …
I have an X4. IMO, looks way better than the X3 with a minor hit to the cargo room. The hatch is much more functional than a trunk.
@@JakeTerch True! This one looks like a lifted Focus.
Interesting that it doesn't have the fixed fuel and temperature gauges that other Audis with the virtual cockpit have. In all your views I only saw a distance to empty for the fuel and a temp gauge on one view. There might be a more useful screen display.
10:10 The image quality here is noticeably worse lol. Not hating at all, just giving you some feedback as I never noticed any problem with your previous camera equipment.
Agreed - very granular in lower light interior scenarios. Not worth any potential stabilization benefits IMO. Great review otherwise, as always 👍.
Darn it. But the image stabilisation was fab!
i have an audi a1 2023 (35 tfsi). What I like most about it is the interior, not so much the gears and the suspension.
Last week I had to take the car in for service. got a loan car, a Q5 2024 (quattro 40 tdi) wasn't too impressed the interior looked like something from 2014, not 2024. the driving feeling was ok. My car feels more modern in the interior. was also surprised that it took so long for the car to warm up.
I think that Volvo makes cars that feel much nicer in the interior. The driving feeling is the same (XC60) in my opinion.
But i do love my A1. Just strange that the Q5 felt so outdated in comparasion to my A1 and to other brands as Volvo or Mercedes and B&W. I live in Sweden.
The engine, the gears felt a lot more mature and suspension where a lot better on the Q5 than on my smal A1.
Great review. Regrettably I'm not seeing a link or button to get to part 2. Please provide a link
Can't wait for part 2! Really interested in the comparisons but sadly don't see a link in the description or at the end of the video.
I was looking for an overview of the dct in the Q5 and I you nailed it for me. Test drive to come. Thanks Alex!
5.5 seconds is incredible for a "base" engine in a small crossover. That's just as quick as a 330i and quicker than my IS 350, which does not have the base engine - both of which are smaller, lighter sedans. Aside from that, I have always heard nice things about the Q5. I've not driven one - in this segment, I've only driven the NX 300 (last-gen), the Macan, and the X3 xDrive30i. The Macan I drove was a Turbo, so not really a fair comparison, but that car was fantastic. The X3 was a very nice car to drive as well, and it felt like it was on a whole other plane compared to the NX. However, the Macan was far sportier than the X3 and felt a little more sporty even just to sit in. So I am curious where the Q5 falls relative to those.
The q5 falls well below the Macan. Slightly below the x3. But this absolutely blows any Lexus out of the water. The is and definitely the new 2022 NX
@@naveenthemachine from a dead start, that Q5 is a boat against a is350, put a rune and exhaust and leave them in the dust.
That Q5 is a cow, 5.7 in paper, 261hp vs. a 306hp from a sedan that is much lighter, is350, which everyone knows they do more than 5.5 as Lexus is conservative and not like the competition that balloons the numbers.
The is350 3rd generation is slow, so maybe the Q5 can keep up w it. But a 2nd gen is350, that is a different platform.
It always cracks me up when reviewers test drive vehicles and talk about 0-60 times like anything under 6sec as well...I know not the best etc..when 30 years ago you would have to shell out 100k+ in today's dollars to get anything close to under 6sec. And we're talking about an SUV-type vehicle!!!
I much prefer the camera for the interior shots that you used before. This one is grainy. Also, the two thumbnails at the end of this video were the CT5-V and Supra, not the Audi.
They removed the mmi controller and replaced it was a plastic bucket. Nice.
I think the Stelvios's legroom numbers have been wrong in the last few videos. I believe it has 76.5in, and not 68.5in.
That’s the latest spec from Alfa. The Stelio Is quite tight inside
Weird. I sat in the back of it, and it didn't feel any smaller than a 3 series, or the Gulia.
😂 sportback is the automotive mullet!
Love that 😅
ALEX, REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE PLOTTING AGAINST AUDI? THE GOOD OLD DAYS LMAO ..
Yes bring back the child seat section. helps me recommend women with kids to you more. I have You on HD tv and see no difference in camera quality my end.
What is that small shiny knob on the driver seat heater button? I have seen that thing on many Audi cars so far…
I’m a Q5 fan..but, man.they’re everywhere..( I’m leaning towards an xc60)...xc70 owner..
I see no point in buying a version of the Q with less utility. I’m happy with my SQ5. Plenty fast, I’m not taking it on the track. I liked it better than the BMW X3, Mercedes and Acura. The genesis GV70 was pretty good actually but I’m not on the Hyundai bandwagon. I’ve got real exhaust tips, sport differential, and more.
Alex can you please please do a video on the A4 or A4 All Road those are the vehicles I'm cross-shopping with the Q5
Have A BEAUTIFUL DAY EVERYONE
No thank you.
The Least Practical? Not if you don't have any friend.
I do like your reviews but in your opinion, other than a Rolls or Bentley, what Xover DOES have the most opulent interior?
Probably bmw genesis and Lincoln and to an extent acura
@@naveenthemachine Good choices, Lincoln DID really upgrade the opulence factor in their SUV, and Genesis is punching above it's weight too. Beemers are iconic IF they've done one damn thing to solve their reliability/longevity issues. Acura, that's an interesting choice, they tend to be more about performance than opulence but they are cool and uber reliable.
@@justaguy6100 but their new products like the RDX and MDX are closer to genesis or Lincoln than ever before. Aside from the Germans Acura and Lincoln are the only brands that can give genesis stiff competition
@@naveenthemachine Cool! Thx.
2:07 why does Alex look extra giant next to the car lol
I don't see the link to the second video in the video description, not was there a "button" on the lower right to the second video as you described Akex. What gives?
Sorry, nor was there
I just finished editing part 2 and I’m stuck somewhere with slow internet access this week. Eeek! So it’ll be up next week
I bought regular Q5, dont understand people buying the coupe SUV, not practical at all.
Different strokes …
Cargo room compromise is minimal but, IMO, it looks better/different. Enjoy your Q5 😎
I personally like the sportback much more, but we've got a minivan for hauling the family and stuff, so a compact SUV is my daily driver
Audi's best designs came between 2008-2011
The Q5 Sportback and Q8 give me hope though
Peak Audi design language were the B8/8.5 A4/A5/Q5; C7/7.5 A6/A7; and, D4/4.5 A8, from 2009-2017.
@@huehuehueh
Huh?
I’m pretty sure I’m just old but I think it looks really stupid with thin sidewall tires. I don’t get the oversized wheel / undersized tire trend.
Rap videos
How does it compare to a model y ? What would you rather get ?
One is an internal combustion engine vehicle and one is an electric vehicle. They couldn't be more different. The question is what do you want? I would definitely take the Q5 because I like the driving dynamics, build quality, and Audi's styling. But if you want an electric vehicle like the Model Y, I don't know why you are even considering the Q5.
That grill - the holes should be smaller. Can see too much of what’s lurking behind.
No DCT in the USA on the Q5....
Less practical?
I was honestly not impressed by the interior of the Q5. Too plasticky at this price point. Road noise was bad as well. Was let down. The MMI cluster was awesome though.
I like the Audi interior. Reserved yet elegant and Germanic
I’ve seen worse interiors in the class
@@naveenthemachine design is fine. Quality is bad. IMO
@@dhruvb38 I think the Audi interior is miles better than even the new Lexus NX
A Porsche Macan is the best "spec" Q5. Much more luxurious.
The only mainstream suv that can match this in performance is the RAV4 prime
Save $25K and get a Seltos SX!
Or get a RAV4 prime and get the same performance but much better mpg and more space
Too bad, it’s not an EV. ICE is ancient.
Engines with such pathetic power numbers better not require premium fuel
This is good power imo. I’ve seen worse where it supposedly has more power but it’s SIGNIFICANTLY slower
I only came here to say that this isn't the sexist Q5. Like, based purely on subjective looks (I know), this is the most ungainly looking pimple on the road today. Just looking at the sideview...yuck! That rear quarter glass...ewwww. It looks like the "baseball cap Mini" went to the Mark McGuire Pharmacy College. This someone how makes the X4 and X6 seem pretty. It's an affront to common sense and the designer should be shot into space. I said, Good Day Sir!!
😂😂😂
Looks like a snub nose SUV. Stop playing to the badge. And it's a bad badge. And it's stupid money in the full optioned ones.
Still an ugly car. No improvement over last gen. The rear is still Hyenas face and butt all lumped together. Tight rear seats, boring dash, stupidly designed console, cheap steering wheel but very nice dials/nevi. From what I read, Audi is not reliable nor affordable to maintain. But I've ride in the old one before. It's got good suspension.
This doesn’t feel cheap compared to the Lexus nx infiniti qx50 qx55
🥴Hyenas face!🤭
U know Audi is the UGLYEST CAR ON THE ROAD.
Um no they aren’t. That award would go to Lexus and to some extent bmws with the beaver buck tooth grille 🐽
Alex and his flamboyant friend Sofyan love expensive unreliable German cars. What they both dislike are Toyotas and other cheap reliable cars like the Mitsubishi Mirage, Chevy Spark etc.
You think the Mirage and Spark are reliable? Throwaway maybe. Everyone would love expensive cars they don't have to buy or live with long term.
What's your point?
@@nicksgarage2 Yes both the Mirage and Spark are reliable. Ask Mirage and Spark owners. I own a Spark myself.
@@theMLBfan Did you watch the video? My point is that it's hilarious that a viewer accused Alex of having an anti-Audi bias when in reality, the opposite is true.
I own a Toyota and I agree with them. Cheap reliable cars and Toyotas always fall apart badly in comparison tests when compared to other brands
There are some new Toyotas that are impressive like the current gen Camry the is500 GR corolla LC500 RAV4 prime but the rest of them seriously fall apart
Very feminine looking vehicle
