In 1959, when I was 7, I told my mom I'm running away. I got as far as the neighbors property and sat on the curb. Mom said I thought you were running away, I said I am. My oldest did some thing similar. He said he didn’t love or need me any more, and he was leaving. I said ok, bye. He went to his room and gathered a few things in his back pack and went to the front door. He said he was ready to go. I said go where? He replied Grandmas. I asked him how he was going to get there. Many kids who run away don’t really have a plan. They just want to be alone for a while. Then they realize “I’m not very well equipped to do this plan.”
I did this when I was nine, left for over 8 hours. Hid in the bushes whenever I saw them come by looking for me... came home later that day, they acted like I never left. Asked my mom later in life... "You think we couldn't see you in the bushes!?, we weren't looking for you we all went out to get food!"
I actually did run away from home. I didn't come back. And a week later the police found me under a bridge and they basically dragged me back to my house. I left because of actual reasons. My family was abusing me. So I just left. This little girl left because she got her little play toy taken away. What a reason to leave, Jesus. I wish I had that reason instead of the hands I was dealt with in life.

@@hdajq892ey7 yup, I feel like, without knowing a backstory, she wanted her mom to come after her to actually show she cared. Which is very normal for kids to do. Instead she had to walk her way back alone with her mom waiting by the door cackling with her phone in her hand. Now she knows her mom is not going to come for her, which hurt her trust in her. I feel so so bad for this girl. And I hate people saying this is how you „teach a lesson“… a lesson in how little your parents care about you, yes.
important note is that she always kept an eye on her as she was walking away. can't have the kids running the house. mom stood her ground as a parent and taught her daughter a valuable lesson in a safe manner. her daughters smile at the end was beautiful. loved that she understood the humor in it
Only takes a few seconds for someone to drive by her and take her 😣 and mom would be too far away to do anything about it. And she was in the street, someone coming up the hill out not paying attention or on their phone could have hit her. So many scenarios. So glad she got home safe.
My daughter did this when she was six. It was dark outside so my husband went and hid behind some cars to keep a watchful eye on her as she set out on her trek to God knows where. I watched her from our window(s) and kept seeing her take few steps, stop, and listen for something. She suddenly ran back home in a panic. I ended up finding out that my husband was making howling noises from behind one of the cars parked on the street (something we had not discussed prior lol). When she came in I gave her a big ol hug and asked what happened and she said she "needed a ride afterall" 😂😂😂 I'm sure it was terrifying for her at the time, but she's 16 now and we laugh our butts of now thinking about it 😂

Growing up in the 1970’s I ran away once…gone all day, got thirsty drank from a neighbors garden hose. Sat in a big tree up the street from my house. No one came looking for me, whet home when the street lights came on and ate dinner. My mom asked what I did all day🤨 Never realized I ran away. Those were good old days! I miss the 1970’s wish I could take my son back to those days.
In those days you could leave your door unlocked knowing the only intruders you’d get were neighbours being nosey or friends popping around out of boredom. The sun was always shining and the winters felt SOO cosy snuggled up in your Dads arms in front of the gas fire coz we stopped using coal in 1980. BTW I’m from the best country in the world, the UK. ❤️from England. 👍👍👍
I grew up in the '80s and it was just like that. We'd venture out on our bikes and go a few miles away. We'd go home for a quick meal then be back out for more adventures til the sun sank below the horizon. Such good times
I still have a hearty laugh, sometimes a chuckle whenever I remember this scenario played out a long time ago! This little girl was at the age when she wanted to assert her individuality and equality with her mom. Imagine her locking horn with mom and waiting who will lay down first and then all huggy again.
I did the same around this age. Packed a small suitcase, full of all the stuffed animals that would fit and 3 cookies. Got to the corner, went backed and annouced its dark, i will go in the morning 😂 My mom watched me and welcomed me home, she didn't laugh at me.
My 4 year old daughter did the same thing including packing food, but when she got to the street, she turned around and yelled, "I can't cross the street unless someone holds my hand".
My little brother used to say he was running away and my mom had the best strategy to deal with it. She would help him pack, telling him he would need clothes and food and asking if he had any money saved. She would put his stuffed animals and toys into his suitcase too and say “I know how much you love these, I want you to have them while you’re gone.” It always ended with him in tears and saying he didn’t want to run away-I think it reminded him both that he needed his mom and that she loved him
I walked out. That’ll teach em. I had to come back because there were jobs to do. They were my jobs and I had to feed the chickens and chop the wood. Seems they needed me and I was responsible. Mums cooking tasted nice too but that’s not the main reason. Ok? 😂😂
That look of defeat when she came back was so precious. "I'm beat, don't gloat mum or I'll run away again." She did, but not beyond the front porch. What a kiddo!
My mom thought my sister would come back and thought it was funny because she was only 8 and it’s not like she would actually run away … she eventually went missing and was found dead in some train tacks and the last video of her voice was her crying and saying she hates this family and she’s running away from our security camera.. that was a long time ago tho I still miss her and wonder how she would be now
She was smiling at the end, I love how the mom handled this edit: this video isn't shaming the daughter. This is something MOST families exp at least once, it's a child figuring out boundaries and emotional regulation. It's a wholesome moment that they can all look back and laugh at, even right after it just happened. The kid is clearly fine and was supervised the entire time!

YES, it does matter, and YES it does stay with a kid. If this happened once, it's probably an ongoing behaviour with the parent that will likely result in low self-worth for the kid. Even siblings should be taught not to tease and belittle others. You can teach a kid to have a sense of humour about themselves without making them feel insignificant.

I had a neighborhood friend show up at my door when I was seven yrs old, he was in my grade. He had a knap sack full of clothes and dumped them on my bedroom floor. "Can I live with you? I ran away." Being kids I said Okay, let's play. My parents were not aware of him coming over, I answered the door. An hour later his mom showed up and picked him up. She was apologetic, but not really angry. Like it was another day as he was proabably prone to doing this often. Except in my case, we were under the radar with my own parents so he was able to stay away longer than the other times.
When my then 5 year old daughter announced she was "running away" from home I told her as she was leaving that our dog was very happy because now he could have his own bedroom. She left for 30 seconds standing outside in the front yard and came back in asking if she could move back in with the dog. We laugh about today.

My sister did this at 14. She made it to Florida 1200 miles away. My dad had to hire a detective to find her.

I never made it past the end of the block because I use to get scared to be further than a block away from my house. I actually was scared to leave the same block. The furthest I made it was to the corner of the block.

In 1959, when I was 7, I told my mom I'm running away. I got as far as the neighbors property and sat on the curb. Mom said I thought you were running away, I said I am. Can you drive me to the bus station to buy me a ticket to Montana?" I wanted to live with my cousin Merle in a tiny town in Montana. ❤
That smile on her face … she understood what happens if no one comes after her
My oldest did some thing similar. He said he didn’t love or need me any more, and he was leaving. I said ok, bye. He went to his room and gathered a few things in his back pack and went to the front door. He said he was ready to go. I said go where? He replied Grandmas. I asked him how he was going to get there. He said I was going to drive him. I said, “I thought you didn’t need me any more.” He burst into tears and said I do need you, and I love you daddy. He never tried any BS like that again. Today he is a Naval Officer in the US Navy submarine service.
Good story
He never tried open the hatch and run away from the sub?
So why didn't you drive him to Grandma's house? I would've sent him because obviously he needs space. Sometimes I would ride the other school bus to my grandma's house especially when I needed space from my mom because we used to fight a lot.
