I have a sister in law that really did run away from home and no one noticed she was gone. 3 weeks later, when she finally walked back into her house, her Mom yelled at her about not doing a chore. She was one of 13 kids though, so maybe that was why... I used to always want to run away from home, and my Mom told me to do it, she was sick of putting up with me. She even brought me a suitcase and told me to pack. Ah, childhood trauma.

Hilarious story!!! My running away story wasn't like this, though. I ran away from home the summer before my senior year of high school. Here's what happened...
So both parents were/are abusive in multiple ways and I just couldn't take it anymore. My dad was living in Florida at the time and when it was time to fly there, I packed as much as I could into a duffle bag, suitcase, and my purse. On my way back "home," I dodged my mom and stepfather at the airport and my friend picked me up and we left for her house. This ended in a really rough and messy falling-out which led to getting kicked out of my friend's house for becoming the monster I was running away from. I lost myself for a while and was figuring out how to navigate school while homeless. But thanks to the power of going from house to house, homeless shelters, locker rooms, and city benches, I was still able to do my homework!
So I graduated high school out of spite and invited my parents because I knew they didn't believe I could do it. And boy, was I correct... The incubator told me right after the ceremony that she and my stepdad had a bet going that I either wasn't going to graduate or was gonna graduate pregnant... while my dad decided it would be cute and quirky to throw a fit because I finally stood up to him and made it clear that I was done taking his narcissism crap. Safe to say, I haven't spoken to them in 4 years and I'm much better off now. Still healing, but yeah.
This isn't an encouragement for people to run away from home, by the way. I lost all my friends and family, lost myself completely and became a really awful person until reaching rock bottom. A lot of traumatic stuff happened that has left deep wounds that will take many years to be healed. In hindsight, I probably should have just waited or called CPS or something because I would've been much better off. But it's my story and I get to decide how it ends.

I remembered when me and my sister wanted to run away (for actual family issue reasons) we'd take a black bag , some of our clothes , our favorite toys and some canned foods with us before making it out of the house.
We made it about two streets away from home when we felt the dread of the punishment that we'd get from our Step dad. So we made it home in fear and tears.

I ran away once. Got two houses down the street before I turned around and came back. Mom was more upset about me tracking dog poop in the house than she was about me nearly running away. I think I was five or six or so.
To my parents' credit, there have been two times since then where I went missing and they started searching for me.

I got stopped in my tracks pretty quickly once I realize that my bunk bed wouldn't fit in my kerchief and I wouldn't be able to lift it. I didn't want to rough it on the ground!

I thought about running away a bunch as a kid. Never actually tried it since I didn't know what I'd do after I left, but it was a thing.
Also yes, I'm pretty sure annoyance is a love language. I think the only reason me and four of my other sisters are as close as we are today is because we'd bother each other so much when we were children. It's just that "Annoyance" doesn't sound as lovely as the other love languages, so it never gets counted.

The dad immediately assuming it was the mom's fault that she ran away made me laugh not gonna lie, especially that little break in the story where Becca goes over it. The delivery was just really good there, especially the little laugh.
My big brother as a little kid said to his/my mom: "i'll run away!" then my mom said: "Don't run away, lets run away together!
Then they went to picnic for a while and then they just returned home like normal. :D
This is the cutest thing I've ever heard! That's a really smart way to resolve a fight and make a child feel special if they feel underappreciated. I'm actually writing that down for the future! If my future kids are anything like me, they're going to want to run away to have an adventure at some point.

I once got really mad at my parents when i was a toddler and i tried to tie a blanket to a stick. But i couldn't find out the knot for it so i just carried the blanket like a bag of gifts over my shoulder. I couldn't even make it 20 meters away from the house and i ended up sitting in front of the house. My parents thought "aww, it's a little picnic!"
Hilarious! Magnificent! Plus, for being good when I was a kid, I had a picnic with my mom in my trampoline. I loved every second of it.

my older brother had a LONG "running away" phase when he was a kid, that started nearly as soon as he was old enough to walk, (I know this from a famous family story where he actually did try to run away as a toddler, and got all the way up the street dragging his baby blanket, before our parents noticed) and lasted until he was in like. middle school. Now that he's old enough to actually move out, we can't get rid of him 🙄

I went through my running away phase somewhere in between middle and high school. I also never had any plans of actually going through with it, but the idea fascinated me, so it became sort of a theme in a lot of my writing and painting.
I think I might have talked about it a little too much in creative writing assignments, because the teachers totally got the counselor on me.
Now that I’m an “adult” the idea of living in the woods alone sounds wonderful. Christopher Thomas Knight is my role model.
I also went through that phase, it got me sent to the psych ward twice and I’m still in it

Really digging the variety this video has to offer, like the sudden news flash, the sneaky pause to add a passing comment, and the whole idea of using going outside the treehouse with a picnic to tell the story. (and, of course, the handkerchief bag-on-a-pole being the picnic)
