This Film Analysis aims to explore the Story, Themes and Characters in Denis Villeneuve's 'Sicario.'
This film is packed with suspense, thrilling moments and great performances. Not to mention the detail that has every aspect of the film supporting the narrative. This video explores the entangled characters, the themes of Light and Dark and the duality throughout the film. - Фільми й анімація

Great analysis. Thank you.
@@RobertSlover Thanks, its such a dense film, that really rewards multiple viewings.
@@_MUSTSEEFILMS_ yes sir. maybe benicio del toro's best performance.
3 things in the ending:
1: I think it's great with the ambiguity of Silvio's son. And the notion that he may turn into the next Alejandro, revenging his father, like Alejandro revenged his family.
2: I love the flute music, it sound a bit like howling wolves, fitting that motif. Very atmospheric.
3: i think another thing the ending tell us, is that this is very much everyday for the people of Mexico. A gunshot isn't a big cause for alarm for them, it's just the harsh reality, violence is the norm.
Great film and analysis.
On point 3. Mexico isn't nearly the shithole this film paints it to be. The nice parts are down south, in the mountains and on the coasts. I really hate how lazy filmmakers can be when showing their "truth."
Lukas Sørensen good point. the gunshots followed by resumption of soccer means they are numb to this violence now And it's part of daily life
TheGoalisCommunism agreed. India is still shown as slumdog millionaire land by Western filmmakers. they need to watch Michael Wood's Story of India to realise where ancient civilizations ( respect to the Incas!) actually began and where true humanity and not religious brain washing to justify conquests and invasions were the norm
That ending man...
When that music comes up and the credits roll it's just goosebumps all over my body
@@whateverittakes1673 Except...that back in the north it really can be like that. And I actually agree with the statement of Sicario being an accurate portrayal of Cd. Juarez back in 2010. Plus, I know people who would agree on a gunshot not being that big of a cause for alarm.
Alejandro (Benecio del Toro) was one of the most fascinating characters I have seen in a long time. In the beginning of the film, he came across as a loner, a cowboy (the scene where he is standing outside the private jet, looking on into the distance). Kate sees Alejandro taking a nap and he jumps in his seat (flashback)-so now we see he is suffering from some serious PTSD-at the end of the film we discover why (his wife and daughter were killed by the cartel). In that meeting with the Marshals and the Deltas before they pick up the prisoner: Alejandro looks like he is not even listening to the man speaking: he is distracted, thinking about something else. As we can see at the end of the film, Alejandro has one objective in mind: killing the cartel boss and his family.
The intriguing thing about Alejandro is that he used to be a lawyer; he was trying to use the legal system in Mexico to prosecute the cartel. When his wife and daughter were killed, he changed tactics: he became a hired killer, a hitman, a sicario. Alejandro was lethal and efficient with his sidearm; his skill was surgical; he was emotionless, passionless-he had ice in his veins. Alejandro was brutal, blunt (especially to Emily Blunt) and decisive. He was a wolf in the land of wolves.
Alejandro: “Nothing will make sense to your American ears. . . . but in the end, you will understand.”
That line is killer and I agree, his character really sneaks up, it doesn't seem that important when he's first introduced but he really does take over the show.
Like America isn’t the boss
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors.
Great analysis, hands down my favorite film last year. Can't wait to see what Villanueve will do with Blade Runner.
wait whaaaaaaat I gotta check this out!
he is doing bladerunner? thats good news
Villeneuve************
Aged well. Now we wait for Dune!
Blade Runner was even better than Sicario in my opinion. Can't wait for Dune
This was my favorite film of the year. A thoughtful analysis of a sheltered society coming to terms with the real world. If you haven't seen it, don't walk, run.
just finished watching Sicario and immediately went looking for your analysis, agree on so many points you made, great video as always Darren
Thanks man, its such an awesome film! glad you got a chance to see it!
Darren - MUST SEE FILMS nice analysis. was the character Alejandro from a rival Colombian cartel. there's a scene where Brolin explains that to Kate in a ditch. what's your analysis about that?
1:20 The climax of Sicario seemed like the dinner scene, not the paper signing scene.
well, yeah. the paper signing is an epilogue, gun or no gun.
Alejandro is one of my favorite movie characters. He represents the man who makes criminals pay. He doesn't follow rules or only a very few rules. It's takes men like this to take on violent criminals that don't live by any rules.
I love this movie. I have probably watched it 10 times.
+haboob308 awesome, i think the best way to learn about a film is to re-watch it, you become so familiar with the structure and characters.
I haven't watched it as much, but I watch video after video of people's interpretations of the message. There's so much variety. This is the first video I've seen that recognized Kate as Alejandro's mirror image. I find this take helps me understand other people's opinions better.
Beautiful analysis of one of the ten best movies I’ve ever seen in my 49 years on this planet.
Way of the gun better be in the other 9.
Wow thats cool that this is so highly rated for you! It is a masterpiece alright, the more I go back and watch it, the more I'm blown away!
This guy watched this movie on a totally different level.
nah, he just scratched the surface
You can’t analyze most Movies made of recent from literary lenses but you know the real art pieces from the commercial money-makers. There’s a few scopes this film can be analyzed, they all point to Kate/us as the antagonists lol a good movie can, and should be sliced apart. The tenets are intentional not accidental
I was really worried when I knew that Ridley Scott wasn't directing the Blade Runner sequel, but after watching Sicario I have no doubts that Villeneuve is totally capable of pulling it off. His dark, gritty atmosphere and tone will be perfect for the Blade Runner universe
More on cycle of violence message is the placement and use of water cooler bottles and the suggested use of waterboarding.
There is an empty bottle and rags subtly placed at the end of a hall in the opening action, Alejandro carries a bottle into Guillermo’s interrogation room and finally Fausto Alarcon explains to Alejandro ‘where do you think we learned it from?’ referring to the violence he perpetrates on others. If you add Matt Graver's statement 'to dramatically overreact' it all highlights the cyclical nature of the war on drugs.
Yeah I agree, I always found the use of the water bottles quite unsettling especially since it was just hinted at but never fully shown.
Glad to see another video from you, and what a great one to comeback to-nice!
+Jacks Movie Reviews Thanks man, iv always got videos lined up and planned but unfortunately I can only really sit down and create them when i juggle it around my job. So sometimes its hard to finish a video and then sometimes ill do like 3 videos at once if I'm off.
+Darren - MUST SEE FILMS I totally know where you're coming from, its hard to balance life and this very time consuming hobby!
Absolutely, especially as iv been very busy recently and its hard to maintain a clear focus on what your actually goal or focus is, and i find myself doing stuff but not exactly doing the right things to achieve the goal. Lucky iv just had a few days off and had some time to re-affirm my vision for different things in life. MSF being one of them!
Easily one of my favorite movies of all time
Oh snap! Love that connection between the girl and the cop and their role in the matter. I also noticed when i watched this how lighting and darkness was used to show character, great spot. Benicio del toro is so good here, made me watch snatch and usual suspects again.
+Martin Scorcese Yeah Del Toro is amazing here. Yeah the connection between Kate and Silvio was the key to understanding Silvios importance for me, the first time i watched it I wasn't sure why he was in the film.
I was kate while i was in the army then boom slapped in the face by reality then i evolved into Alejandro. The quote about living long enough to become a villain is best represented by Alejandro.
I bet thats the truth, you either get out, or toughen up and become what you have to for survival. (I imagine, I've never done anything that crazy lol)
Can’t wait to see the 3rd installment
Biffy in the intro. Gave me proper 2005 vibes.
I know, such an awesome song. I was late to the party with Biffy.
Still one of those videos where I find myself watching it over and over again.
That was a truly brilliant analysis of SICARO...& it's characters
I got the impressions that Alejandro told Kate to move to a small town. Because she was to soft and moral to fight the big fight on the border and was almost killed 4 times during this movie. When confronted by REAL bad guys. She lived because she was lucky and not good at it!
Dinner with Benicio. What a scary thought.
Such a good movie, he has to be one of the best newer directors. Thanks for the great analysis.
the intro is like sicario:the anime
I’ve always felt and knew that this movie had hidden meanings thanks for exposing and discussing them. Very good insight , 🙏🏻 subbed and liked. Looking forward to more reviews.
Outstanding analysis ,
Excellent film
I concur. Nicely done.
Enjoyed your observations!
Just seeing this analysis since I decided to rewatch the movie and I loved it! seriously love every point you made!
cant w8 to see more of your analysis,so brilliant, keep up the good work!!!!
I always played the Sicario soundtrack playing Ghost Recon Wildlands
Man what an absolute pleasure to watch. Great analysis!! Was a little bummed out when I found out that they would do a spinoff film about Alejandro without Villeneuve at the helm, felt like it might cheapen the character. Apparently the director of the Italy miniseries 'Gomorrah' is replacing him, so fingers crossed it holds up.
Just found your channel, cheers for taking my sleep away!
This is just pure class of film review!
+Alexander Khlapov Thanks man, trying out a few new things.
Excellent video, thanks.
Kate was very much in conflict with her ethics to do the job she was trained to do.
Good movie analysis by you and those in the comment section.
Thanks, yeah it was definitely a moral and ethical battle internally for her!
I love this movie ! Great work Darren.
Great analysis. Thank you!
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it, such a well directed and shot film!!
Great video as always Darren.
+Nick Rodriguez Thanks man!
So perfectly crafted analysis. Loved it
Really good analysis. Best one so far.
Thanks man! Its such a gritty and real film, also very layered and clever!
Awesome film. Worth to keep in my library.
alejandro is the "there but for the grace of god go I" character, he loses his family in a horrific way, and then becomes a killer of women and children. a good man who does evil things with no compunctions.
Only 10% of his deeds are evil.... good luck fighting cartels with polite men .
Great job. Thank you so much
Thanks Yasmine! Really loved this film and Denis is a visionary director!
He became one of my favorite directors ever since I watched Prisoners. And Sicario is just another masterpiece and you really helped me understand what passed over my head. 😊😊
Thanks I'm glad I was able to share some wee nuggets. I had the same experience with him, after Prisoners I was so blown away by how amazing it was that I knew anything he did would be on another level! Which it has been!
really excellent analysis! thanks. great film for sure, i'm reminded of the le carre classic, and martin ritt film, Spy who came in from the Cold. the border and the berlin wall play similar roles, and the twisted morality of the human political drama is similar. I suppose the drug war has many parallels with the cold war. i'm a child of both.
I feel like we could talk about this film forever, like Knight of Cups.
The nature of it being a Lynchian horror and mystery are interesting too, although this explains some of it.
Also, I sorta feel like the opposite could be said of the characters too, although the multiple interpretations make it an interesting film too.
+The Power Rangers Professor Iv yet to see Knight of Cups, looking forward to it though, I'm pretty sure that will be a heavy film!
Great analysis. I saw this movie a couple months ago, and was not disappointed when I saw this analysis of it!
also, great parallel between the mexican cop and Kate
+Sm ramgator Thanks man, Yeah the connection between Kate and Silvio was the key to understanding Silvios importance for me, the first time i watched it I wasn't sure why he was in the film.
Wow what timing... I just bought this film on Blu-Ray and watched it just last week, it's such an amazing film and I loved your analysis, keep it up!
+Arjun Dhugga Thanks man, good timing, hope this video helped!
great analysis, also one thing that I picked up on which was really a great little detail is when Kate and her partner walk into the motel room with all the soldiers watching cartoons of gun fights as if Denis is showing us that these soldiers think of warfare as a game or a cartoon, like it's a sport for them.
+MakFilmDiscussion MFD Yeah i think Denis did a great job of fleshing out the tough solider guys without over doing it and needing to give them too much screen time, then little bits of them that we say, especially during the border driving scene was enough to let us know who they really were.
very true
Well crafted and insightful.
+flyingfshsndwch Thanks man, i had the outline done for ages for this but it just took a while longer to actually edit it all. Happy to finally share it.
Good work Darren. Thank you
Brilliant analysis pal.
Great stuff from 5:00 to 6:00. Love it Darren. Keep up the good work.
+Ryan Robinson thanks man, this film was so great to dig into, its amazing how much complexity and simplicity are in the same film.
Love your analysis here, Darren. I am going to watch this again and look forward to the new perspective I have gained from your video! I love Villeneuve's style. Have you seen Arrival yet? I was highly impressed with that film!
Whoa good job Darren!!!
I love this video, Darren. Wonder work as always. Keep doing what you're doing, brother!
+racewiththefalcons1 Thanks man, gonna tackle a few different topics coming up soon!
Amazing analysis.
Thanks man, Sicario and Prisoners are both amazing films with incredible themes and supporting visuals, was fun to dig into.
I didn't for a minute think that Emily Blunt would shoot Benicio del Toro at the end, so (for me) there was no real tension in that moment. What would it have achieved if she had? She would have totally compromised herself for no real benefit. It's not even that Benicio del Toro was evil (although he is surely damned). Blunt didn't even see the crimes he committed on the other side of the border. And Josh Brolin was definitely worse in moral terms. So what was the point really of her pointing her gun at del Toro? What am I missing?
Ciaran Guilfoyle I think it goes to show their relationship. The first time she pointed a gun at him she got shot and he said “don’t even point a gun at me” and she goes ahead and does it again but he doesn’t do anything about it. I believe maybe it’s to show that he sort of cares or wants her to shoot?
Great video, couldn't give enough praise to you
Thanks for clearing the movie up for me bruv
Always a good day when this channel drops an analysis vid.
+Steve Holt Thanks man! Got a couple more lined up for soon!
Good essay. FYI, Frankenstein is the creator.
Denis Villeneuve is without a doubt my current favorite director. Prisoners is a masterpiece in my opinion, and Enemy and Sicario are both incredibly thought-provoking films. I will be following his future projects with much excitement and anticipation. Nice job!
+TJ Ruesch I feel the same, Prisoners for me is his best film and just one of my favourites, its not even that the story is that new or amazing, its the execution!
I completely agree. The raw humanity portrayed thorough performance and the bleak, gray visuals expertly shot by Deakins really pinpoint this film's brilliance. Notice not one part of this movie takes place in sunlight. The overcast skies symbolizing the cloudiness Dover feels, with what is right and wrong, moral and unforgivable. I could go on. And that last shot... Doesn't get better than that.
i know i really have to see it!!
Phenomenal....thanks very much...
Thanks man, its such a great film to dig into!
@@_MUSTSEEFILMS_ plz sir explain another Denis Villeneuve directed film Enemy....i am a big fan of DVilleneuve....
In Hindi (Sanskrit): Sikari (Shikari) means the hunter.
@akshay Viswambharan I believe Sanskrit is an ancient offshoot of the Indo European language that is the origin of many European languages.
thoyo most European languages are based on Latin with influence by those who conquered them and those they conquered. So it’s most likely Sanskrit has influenced the languages
Great analysis.
I thought it was interesting how the color of her clothes start to blend into her environment.
Thats interesting, very clever and so deliberate.
Master class in action film making. I was totally captured from start to end. Compared to this movie, Transformer is laughable and silly.
rasaecnai compared to this, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is garbage.
Unfortunately, we are seeing generations of first rate actors wasting their talents on blockbusters when they could have produced art. But the money is probably to tempting and I cannot blame them.
rasaecnai No doubt. How does Michael Bay live knowing real directors can do movies like Sicario.
As long as shitty blockbusters like Transformers make more money than pieces of art like Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner, Michael Bay won't care...
Sicario and Transformers have absolutely nothing to do with each other. You all can't be serious. Sicario is a dark cerebral crime dramatic thriller film. Transformers is a cgi saturated summer popcorn movie based on transforming action figures from the 80s. You cant compare the 2, they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. It's not like Michael Bay intended to make a dark poignant crime drama, Transformers is exactly what its supposed to be.
great analysis
Worth the wait, great video Darren!
+Liam Gillespie Thanks Liam, shouldn't be as long until the next one, iv been buying a house recently so it consumed all my time, got some time off soon so should be able to make some progress and a few more videos!
Excellent Darren thank you very much! What a coincidence, I just watched the movie for the first tim today!
+Mademoiselle Poussy Nice! hope you enjoyed it! I found it haunting and powerful. hope this video helps!
I'm going to sound like cinema sins here, but I can never fully work out how a lawyer goes from grieving father to stealthy assassin. The way the film tells it, Alejandro just decides to take revenge, but he's trained like a special ops guy and that has never sat with me. It's a bit of a leap of faith to just assume 'oh, he must have been trained along the way'. That's me with all Villeneuve's movies so far, sorry to say. There is something in all of them that snaps me out of my suspension of disbelief. At least Dune is a clean slate for him. No one til now has done the story justice and by the sounds of it, Dennis finally found his voice.
Well, he became a CIA asset. They trained him. What's so hard to understand?
it's a subscription!
Amazing video!! Fun Fact I'm working on a Sicario video! Filming it tomorrow!
Alejandro is pronounced Alehandro. In Spanish J is pronounced as an H. Julio becomes Hulio etc.
+NeonsStyle ahhh, i never knew that. Thanks for letting me know, always learning!
Darren - MUST SEE FILMS The r in Alejandro, the dro It is also often used with a slight roll of the tongue.
Great to see you're back!
+LupeJustinian Thanks man, had to focus some energy in other endeavours recently but got some time now to create some new videos.
awesome review! keep up the good work!
notice in the final soccer scene, the theme of the border is present since they play right at the border. (likely the safest place)
Nice to hear Biffy in the Intro
aaaand subbed. thanks for such a great anlaysis
+masterbeef92 Thanks man, if you like Denis Villienuves films, iv cover Prisoners too, except youtube blocked it, so its now here: vimeo.com/95436466
Ah a Biffy fan. Great vid as always mate. :)
+Adrian Conlon - Editor Iv been using quite a few Scottish bands recently in the videos. DriveB By Argument are in my 80s/90s video
Nice. A man of good taste in both music and film. :)
I also found it interesting that Alejandro is wearing a white coat and black shirt at 10:49. Perhaps saying that his outer positive motive of trying to stop the cartel is just masking his true dark motives which leads to the deaths of Silvio and Alarcón's family, who are both mostly innocent.
Love these. Have you done any podcasts lately? I like riding and listening to them
+gsboss Nice man, not in a little while as i was trying to focus on film analysis videos but I'm gonna record a Batman Vs Superman one shortly so will have that up soon!
That’s one way to view Kate’s decision not to shoot Alejandro. Another way to look at it is that she realizes that-in the words of Colonel Jessup-she wants him on that wall, she needs him on that wall.
Excellent breakdown of the film. Have you done one for "Wind River" yet?
Fantastic analysis. The only complaint I have for this video is just the volume levels for the footage from the film was a little low in contrast to your voice.
A very interesting appraisal. I would like to see both the Director's and the Cinematographer's views on your interpretation of their work - you might have hit one or two notes or it might be an exercise in subjectivity? Either way it has been cause for thought, keep it up #thumbsup
I don't know how we keep mispronouncing Alejandro's name when it's said abundantly in the movie.
I love movies that you can literally study
DAMN!!!!GREAT REVIEW!!!
This film is the inadvertent sequel to the brilliant film Traffic- which also dealt with the Mexican drug war.
wanna see your take on sicario 2
I haven't seen it yet, I'm not super excited about it really since its a different director, it wasn't really the story that attracted to me about the first one it was the directors vision, so I'm not sure how ill take the 2nd.
CON PAZ CON PAZ
My favorite scene 😍
The ideas for the sequel are turning in my head now.
+The Power Rangers Professor Young footballer turned Mexican drug lord, then taken down by the america CIA.
+Darren - MUST SEE FILMS I was sorta wondering what if Emily Blunt had turned into the next Sicario.
Hi Darren,
I just wanted to say how lovely and awesome it would be if you could make a film analysis of Polytechnique, another of Villeneuve's movie.
I havent seen Polytechnique yet but i realy really want to as i am a huge Villeneuve fan, when i do I'm sure ill have something to share! Thanks
Great analysis.
Where are you from? I can't place your accent.
Great stuff
+DrunkenM33rkat Thanks man!
Darren - MUST SEE FILMS Do you think you would ever do a analysis on Westminster Harmonies?
I haven't seen it, looks interesting, the black and white looks gorgeous, ill add it to my watch list and check it out! thanks!
Darren - MUST SEE FILMS It's a great film but be warned it's very slow. Though if your a fan of Tarkovsky your bound to love it!
The sequel really depends if they get villeneuve back or anyone remotely on his level
What is that song at the begining? Btw I love sicario as some quality in this age.
Glitter and Trauma by Biffy Clyro
Oh, dear god !! The name is NOT ALEh-HANDROH but ALEH-KHANDROH, with sharp "kh" harder that in "home"...Geeesus !
