  • Germany's entry to the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest in Luxembourg.
    Mary Roos - "Aufrecht Geh'n"
12 years after her first appearance, Mary Roos came back with a big, grande ballad with inspiring lyrics. This song is awesome, and that final static shot of her is so powerful. Sadly, Mary Roos was very underrated this time (but given 1984's ridiculous voting, that's hardly surprising).

Quelle classe Mary Ross! Voilà ,l'interprète qui aurait dû remporter ce concours eurovision 1984! Une interprétation, sobre, efficace et une très belle mélodie. Allemagne douze points!

This should have finished much higher than 13th - then again, the scoring in 1984 was ridiculous as you pointed out.

For sure. One of the best songs of ESC 1984 and one of the best German entries.

So, so underrated in the (very weak, imo) 1984 field. I do wonder why RTL decided to reserve both the most atmospheric camerawork and set usage (isn’t this the only song where the set moves midway through) for this one though, considering the number of songs that basically just used 2 camerashots back and forth

You're right, this song was strongly staged and shot, as was Belgium's where the act began in darkness before being illuminated, to stunning effect. Then you have acts like Spain's which were so badly captured on film, only using 2 shots as you said. I wish I knew why the disparity, but in any case, Germany's act was well done that night.

Yeah, that's correct. And to all the non-german audience: Coincidentally, that's like exactly what she's singing about. Which wasn't intentional. The song was chosen long before the message arrived her.
Additionally, people complained aboit her dress colour. She did one of the greatest jobs in ESC after such a stroke of fate and was still underrated to 13th place.
Anyway, this entire story wasn't harmful to her career and she was a very famous and successful singer. And she landed 3rd place in 1972.
