  • Here's my 1918 FRANKLIN SIT-RIGHT TREADLE that I'll be using for the next 11 blocks of the "365 Sampler Challenge" by Kathryn Kerr. This machine was made by the Domestic Sewing Machine Co. for Sears Roebuck. Sears sold them through their catalogs and shipped them to the buyers. It is basically a clone of the Singer 27 and, from what I've read, can use the same bobbins and shuttle as the 27. Sews beautifully with a perfect stitch. I really like the "Sit-Right" feature with the treadle pedal set off to the left, so you can sit directly behind the needle while sewing. Here a short video of her at work making the Mar. 7 "Flower Basket" block.

Such a nice sound. What a dream that would be for a person to not get a back ache after sewing lil bitty squares.

OMG, so glad to see a new video!
Such a gorgeous setup. and such nice points on your flower basket!
I only have two out of 32 vintage and antique machines that I can sit straight out from the needle--so much more comfortable!

That is a beautiful sewing machine , I do have a Sears and Roebuck Minnesota model C made by the Davis Sewing Machine Company. I have 9 treadle sewing machines with an average age of 121 years. The oldest one is 154 years old made by the Florence Sewing Machine Company. My youngest one is 96 years old is a Damascus Grande rotary made by the National Sewing Machine Company. The Damascus Grande rotary is by far the smoothest running sewing machine I have owned, including electric rotary machines. The only problem I have with these century-old machines is they do not take a standard needle, but after measuring and doing a lot of research I have been able to identify modern sewing machine needles that are in production for all my machines except the Florence sewing machine. The Florence sewing machine a curved needle machine.

You have a nice collection there! I also have a Damascus Grand and a Florence Fancy Legs. :-) I just upload a short video showing me using my Damascus Grand that you might enjoy watching. I LOVE the Damascus!! It is a GREAT machine! Here's the link to that video. ua-cam.com/video/wjkRq0cI_ms/v-deo.html OH...are you an almond farmer, maybe in Calif.? We're farmers up here in E. Guaranteed for 20 years, and here we are sometimes over 100 years later, bringing them back to life and sewing with them again. I have this same head, haven’t refurbished it yet but it turns freely so I’m confident it will sew again one day.

Yup...and these of all-metal well-made machines will still be sewing great long after you and I are gone, as long as people don't throw them in landfills or make "yard art" out of them. 😀

I absolutely agree with you. I love my treadle which came from the T. E. Easton catalogue in 1931. Except for the veneer peeled off the top ( by my 15 year old self ) the machine looks almost as it did then. They have a more consistent stitch than any modern machine I own today.

Wow, what a beautiful machine! 😍 I absolutely love the scarabs! I'd love to have one, but looks like they're unlikely to be available in the UK. I love my 1908 lotus blossom Singer, though.

It’s interesting that these Egyptian motifs pre-date the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen.

The French had sent archeologists long before the Brits so the motifs must have been known. This machines motifs look beautiful whether before or after Tut. The Egyptians didn't change their art much for 1,000s of years. What a legacy.

Can you do a video showing how to thread this machine? I just got one and I'm desperately looking for a diagram, video, or manual!

Can you tell me where to get the spring-steel treadle belt you showed in the video on the portable table? I have searched without finding one. Thank you

I got mine from the McMaster-Carr website. If you need the size flexibility you get with the spring-steel belts, then get that kind and be sure to get the little connectors, too. I also like the "Quick-Connect Hollow-Core Round Belting" for machines using the same belt size, or one that is in a cabinet permanently. It looks like aquarium air tubing, but it is NOT the same. Aquarium tubing will stretch easily and from my experience doesn't last well. Hope that helps!!
