The "I don't want to get married" plot used to be understood as "I don't wan't to grow up." And the proper resolution to that plot is to understand what it is to be an adult - to grow up. Or at least get on the path to becoming an adult.

This era of film adaptations and failed sequels, prequels, and reboots just makes me cherish Peter Jackson's trilogy even more as the years go on. Aged like wine. It really was a gift.
I agree with Gore: The Hobbit movies were horrible, especially coming off the impeccable LOTR trilogy, which had an impeccable extended version. And, TLOTR is probably the best trilogy at the moment.
The difference, of course, is that TLotR is a *very* long story that they had to cut down to make into a trilogy of reasonable length. The Hobbit is a relatively short story they stretched beyond the breaking point, just so they could have another trilogy. I don't give TLotR that much credit as the "best trilogy" because it's an adaptation. A faithful, well-made one. But they had the story there to be told and their great success was in not changing too much and just telling it like it was. The credit, ultimately, goes to Tolkien. (I *hated* when I would see articles about how Jackson was the "creator of worlds". Just look at any world he created *without* Tolkien and you realize he's a competent hack, at best.)
The contextual reality of the story that very few women were capable of or involved in physical combat was what made Eowyn so fantastic that all the characters and readers were in awe of her. If the world is equalized it is also homogenized and has no contrast through which to discern the extraordinary from the mundane. These aren't characters they're personified agendas🤦🏻
I think the Indiana Jones trilogy (there are only 3 movies in that franchise), comes close to the LotR. Chris didn't mention it when naming trilogies, so I will.

Wow, 133k subs. Seems like not long ago you guys were just getting to 100k. Well deserved, one of the very best film news and review channels on YT. Now on to 200k!
Unfortunately, it sounds like the trailer for War of the Rohirrim does indeed represent the movie we got. I was hoping that we'd be pleasantly surprised. Oh well. "You can never go home." I was pretty disappointed with The Hobbit trilogy when it came out. But boy has my esteem risen in comparison to movies made today. I watched them again this year, and I actually enjoyed them. I do still think that they tried way too hard to stretch a simple story into three long movies. But at least they still felt respectful and well intentioned.

I love everything up until and including Jackson's first trilogy. I loved the Bakshi, Deitch and Rankin/Bass animations, and I love Hobitit from Finland. The LotR trilogy is absolute genius. Everything since then has been terrible. I don’t like the fan films. The Hobbit trilogy is awful. Rings of Power (the couple of episodes I have seen) broke my heart. I am not watching War of the Rohirim. I couldn't bear it.
There are two separate audio adaptations of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, all worth checking out. Try and find Nicol Williamson's abridged reading of The Hobbit and the one from Jackanory.
I don't think the comparisons to other movie trilogies is fair. Peter Jackson adapted Tolkien's book into three movies as where the other examples mentioned are original IPs, not based on any specific stories written by someone else. I'd say the Indy trilogy (there are only 3 movies) comes pretty close. Temple of Doom grew on a lot of people over time and compared to most movies today, it's pure gold.
Star wars died in my soul around halfway through the the last jedi. Unlike others: i know when to quit. I buried it that day. I left the first Hobbit movie and buried it. When i bury something: i dont look back, i move forward.
They have some good elements, but as a whole they are a complete mess. Bloated, way too long, too much terrible CGI, loads of pointless additions to the story.
06:30 - I'm actually glad that the first ver. of "The Hobbit" that I've read was from the graphic novel by Chuck Dixon and David Wenzel back in 2013. Then in November 2024 I've read the original book ver. by yours truly J.R.R. Tolkien, and NOT WATCH the 2012 film versions EVER.
I was introduced through the Rankin-Bass cartoon (which I still love), then the audiobook on vinyl read and adapted by Nicol Williamson (it's brilliant), *then* the original book.
The problem as you good gentleman already know is that they just make good movies anymore. Anything they make now just contaminates the authenticity of what went before. I pray they don’t go anywhere near ‘The Silmirillon’. They’ll just end up destroying that as well!! Great work good sirs as always 👍✌🏻🤜
Just watched Alien Romulus and yes you are right. Female protagonist that has no arc and goes nowhere. I am tired of the girl boss genre at this point. Disappointing to hear this is more of the same.
What i find funny is that they took a character so minor she didn't even have a name, made her so over important and gave her her own movie but then had the conscious thought to think "wait, but we have to explain why no one talks about her" so they had her not marry, have no kids and just leave so people "forgot" about her. Literally the Ashoka Tano problem, this all important character who knows practically EVERYONE, does all the things, and NO ONE so much as even mentions her, ever...
"wildly inconsistent" is pretty in-character for anime. unlike western animation where they're really conscientous in maintaining the same quality across all scenes, japanese animation is much more relatable - the quality is dependent on whether the animator is interested in what's happening. if it's a "boring" conversation, they'll shoot the backs of their heads so they're not even animating their mouths. but if it's a fight scene, suddenly they're animating on fucking ones.
So, I disagree on a handful of points. Its not memberberries of the setting IS the kingdom of Rohan and features the capital and the ancient fortresses of the realm. Therefore, any return to a familiar setting at a different time would be classified as such. But there were a number of dialogue callbacks that were on the nose. As far as I am concerned, the real star was King Helm Hammerhand and he was done much, much better than I expected him to be. As far as embellishment characters go, Hera was mixed. Compared to the plethora of forced action heroines of late, Hera was leaps and bounds above the recent Not-Galadriel from Rings of Power. But then again, after rock bottom even a middling improvement looks astronomical. It gets weird when she says she didn't want to marry, but she is still compassionate, emotional, and kinder than the adverts made it out to be. The lack of an arc as far as I can tell was disappointing, and explains why the ending lost its momentum In terms of ranking, I'd place 'Rohirrim' below LotR (naturally), and above two of the Hobbit movies (I have a soft spot for the first one). RoP doesn't enter the conversation at all
The whole member-berries thing has just become a admission of failure by writers at this point, it's just their way of saying "we gave up half way through"
Wait they make her the leader of Rohan? I knew it was lore breaking by focusing on Helm's daughter any, but that is so bad. Helm's sons all die, Helm goes berserk killing Wulf's men alone with his bare hands, Wulf takes the throne, then Helm's nephew raises the remaining troops and takes back the throne. It is his lineage that makes the second line of kings of Rohan that leads to the characters in the Peter Jackson movies. That has the makings of an amazing movie that I would have waited in line to see. Girl boss fan fic though? I'll pass.
Why would Chris recommend you watch the movie, if he didn't like the movie? 🤣🤣🤣 I'm not Roger Ebert, but I think it's safe to say, you either should think it's worth watching, or not, and stick to that.
spoilers: Helm absolutely wrecks his enemies bare fisted after recovering from being shot multiple times, but nobody will call those scenes "woke guyboss garbage", meawhile Hera has a few cool fight scenes and suddenly she's an overpowered Mary Sue. I think it's fair to say that these jokers just hate women existing lol For those of you who are actual Tolkien fans: almost everything that happens in the book (the one or two pages in the Appendicies of ROTK) happens in this movie. Helm himself gets more of a character arc, as do his sons.
Andre (from Midnight's Edge) thought it was pretty good for what it was. So much so, he would take this over the Hobbit movies. I'll wait for it to come to streaming, but will watch when it does.
M.E.'s review got me to see it, and I enjoyed it overall, but I can see where many others thought Hera is a girlboss. I didn't get that, but it was pointed out to me by Alteori certain aspects of her attitude that do make her sort of a girlboss. This should have been the story of Fréaláf saving Rohan, but Philippa Boyens, et al. went off track with their feminist agenda.
@@WarDog793 Andre said it was based (although I guess that is maybe head canon?) that she was utterly forgotten in history because she never got married and had offspring.
I just saw it and it wasn't that bad (and I expected it to be so). Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens all had hands as executive producers, which helped. Sure, there were some cringe lines near the end, but over all it was handled decently well. Hera was "awesome" for sure, but she never treated anyone poorly, a key trait of all girl bosses. She does fail a few times and also gets injured and even gets damseled at one point so that takes away the Mary Sue aspect. Also, not every character goes through a change; flat arcs are a thing. The male characters were still reasonably competent, unlike in other movies, Helm Hammerhand was a total badass and goes out in a blaze of glory. I liked the cameo at the end, even if the voice had to be digitally replicated. Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan had bit parts and Miranda Otto did the voice over narration. There is even a mention of Gandalf at the end. It certainly wasn't Rings of Power. I honestly think the culture war has broken our brains. Side note: While there are three movies, The Lord of the Rings doesn't qualify as a trilogy, in my mind. Trilogies have separate plot lines for each film, with a connecting through line. LotR was one long storyline separated into three films, just like the books. I consider it to be a cinematic mini-series.
Also, every series they compared it to was an original story written for the movies. LotR just happens to be based on one of the most celebrated series of books ever written. They didn't have to try to figure out where to take the story or how to end it satisfactorily. They just had to not screw it up. (Note how much these same people changed the story of The Hobbit to stretch it to three films...and screwed it up.)
Great analysis, guys❤ Charlize in Atomic Blonde is the last female hero I’ve Admired & Respected. Irrespective of gender, I long for admirable characteristics in believable packages. That’s it.
Somehow, all this is seeping into even japanese anime. The new (the two recent ones) Gundam series epitomises that. Even kdramas, which have historically always had female protagonist shows , awesome ones at that, is ramping up the girl boss character (i guess because they're trying to pander to nextflix , etc)
I think Hobbit is not as bad as people make it out to be. It is just unfortunate that it is compared to the greatest trilogy ever created in Lord of the Rings.
there's more to like than hate about the hobbit films. especially the extended versions. they're not great thanks to... elf/dwarf romance... legolas' inclusion... changes to elvish motivations... but so much of it was fantastic.
So little of it was from 'The Hobbit'. I knew it wouldn't work the moment Jackson returned as director. When del Toro was going to direct, I was fairly confident he would make a film version of 'The Hobbit'. Once Jackson took over, I knew it would be a prequel to The Lord of the Rings, if you get my meaning...
@ actually a great deal of it was from the hobbit. especially in the extended versions which actually transform the last film into something so much better. i do hate that they turned the necromancer into sauron and tried to make it a prequel, yes. but i did really like that they made it into a pursuit by... what was his name? Bawg? that was a change that really worked. wasn't peter jackson brought in late? it was my understanding that it was very much not his creation.
Hey, at least she dispatches her enemy in a mano-a-mano *without some BS twist that spares her from getting her hands bloody.* I am so tired of that in movies to keep the hero pure or something by not actually k-ll--g the antagonist. Yeah, Hera does have aspects of a girlboss, but I don't think she was that bad. She was forced to become a leader to save Rohan. Her quest is not to overcome the patriarchy, just defeat the evil man & his forces who want to destroy her people. She also turns down the throne at the end. C'mon, Alan!
But those are just plot points, how does her character change throughout the movie? I don't care about spoilers, as I wasn't planning on seeing this anyway.
I watched the film and thought it wasn't perfect but it was ok. Maybe its because I'm a bit of an anime fan I chalked it up to a "meh" film but a big deal for bringing more anime projects to the theatres. Anti-woke is also its own religion as the takes seem to be that its woke when it isnt. The film is not as bad as people will make you think it is. This is NOT Rings of Power by a long shot. It isn't even that woke given the character is saved multiple times by other strong male characters. I dont see what the fuss is about but I do see it as a way to hurt anime films coming to the US.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I would definitely disagree. The terrible CGI alone in those movies makes it terrible in my eyes. Let alone the many other flaws.
I'm doing a double-feature weekend of not watching Kraven back-to-back with not watching War of the Roherrim.

there's more to like than hate about the hobbit films. especially the extended versions. they're not great thanks to... elf/dwarf romance... legolas' inclusion... changes to elvish motivations... but so much of it was fantastic.
Don't like the animation for the subject in my opinion
As an anime fan this kinda genre REALLY does work in anime
@@DreamsOfLegend Tt's not the genre, it's the IP. LOTR already has a strong visual language that isn't anime.
Alan is the fairest of them all!
Spoil away I'm not watching this crap.😂
Stop giving these people your money.
It STILL doesn't make up for Mortal Engines, Pippa! That's two strikes. Stick to property speculation, ya hack.
Hera? The name of a Greek goddess? There’s zero Greek myth lore in the Celtic mythos of middle earth
I mean I liked it. It wasn’t perfect but didn’t strike me as woke as other things.
NOPE! No more Hobbit hate. It's a good movie!
No it is not and it insults Tolkien.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I would definitely disagree. The terrible CGI alone in those movies makes it terrible in my eyes. Let alone the many other flaws.
There is a decent cut somewhere in there
Is there any qalith animation that doesn’t look like Anime rip-off?
Just another money grab
Whhyyy
Helm Hammerhand is Tolkien's version of One Punch Man.
