I enjoyed this video. I love to see people think “outside the box”. I also appreciate that you are so patient when things do not work, (i.e. the plasma cutter). You don’t rant and rave and throw things like a lot of people I have seen do. You always remain calm and work a problem. You also always seem to find a way to accomplish what you are trying to do. In my opinion, this repair job was indeed worth the effort.

Nice repair Bob. Good save on a nice vice. Wish I had a neighbor as handy as you are and had the tools you have. LOL I wonder if the problem with the plasma cutter was the paint i wonder if you ground the metal clen if it would cut it? Hope the family is well and doing good. Stay Safe. Stay Healthy!

It’s been two years, so I’m curious about the longevity of your welds on the cast iron ring. How is it holding up? I’ve got some cast iron projects, including fixing one of these… and I want to know.

Good job, can never have too many vices around the shop, I even made a base for one that fits on to a receiver hitch for my pickup, at times something is broken, you are not the shop
Having a portable vice is a good thing to have,
I guess a real mechanic would have one mounted permanently to the rear bumper of his truck,
    Again good job,

The first thing I did with my vice, I pulled the two adjusting bolts out and tossed them to the kerb..... just fitted high tensile 9/16" head bolts.... heavy duty washers and called it good.
Oh yeah...if it's bolted down on on a work bench...so there's always something to adjust it.... mainly my rattle gun. Ok

Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your plasma cutter? Bad switch? Loose torch cap? Bad consumable? Low air pressure? Bad ground?

Correct me if I'm wrong. I've hear that you can weld with a stick IF, the whole piece of cast iron, is cherry red.

    • @nashguy207
      @nashguy207 4 роки тому

There are guys that weld cast Iron from what I have seen most of them heat it up first not cherry red but get it pretty hot but that is what i have seen watching videos I can't weld myself. LOL

Depends on the work shop or work space, not turning the bench vice for me is just not an option for most things

  • @ohiofarmer5918

I think I would have just tapped the heavy plate to two or three positions and clamped the vice to that. Unlikely that anyone would move the vice very often..
Out on the farm that vice would be broken in a month, but would hold mower blades and little stuff.
I bought one like that at harbor freight maybe for 30 bucks and broke it right away

Good skills. I did not know that you could braze cast iron.. A buddy has special welding rods, and he lets it cool in a bed of hot sand

We have similar stores in Canada and, those Chinese made vices are pure junk. I was brazing a piece and, the surface of the vice started to burn a little. Under the paint, they applied body filler (pink putty). I stripped it down and the cast is full of bubbles, crevices and whatnot. In other words, carbon filled scrap metal.

It’s best to fix an old vise cause today’s vises are made with cheap metal and are made in China which are garbage and will break easily. I have one I bought in 1983 made in Japan and can take a lot of abuse when tightening the jaws and it’s still great after all these years. Not retap it but run a die through it.
