My Aunt recently bought a new home and I had the opportunity to give one of the bedrooms a MUCH needed makeover! The room is actually for one of my favorite people, my Grandpa. I wanted to keep the room more neutral with wooden accents and a few DIYs. I really love how it turned out and can’t wait for him to see it in person when he moves in! I'm not a professional by any means but when we remodeled our small bedroom we put a tall, narrow chest inside the closet on one side so half hang space and half drawer space. Love the transformation.

Loved what you did for your Grandpa! I am 80, relocating to share a home, with an old friend that recently lost her husband. My room is also quite small, lacks 2 walls, so using a large Kallax bookcase as one "wall" but still can't decide how the 3rd "wall" will work as it opens into the art studio. I will be using that area too, but need enclosed area as My space for sitting, sleeping, drawing, etc. So, right now it is opens onto the working art studio. Since we are both working artists, I will be using the clay part of the studio too. If you have any input, I have made many floor plans, but need some fresh ideas! Thks, Grandpa should be delighted with what you did!
Maybe a decorative screen that you move as needed? I have a craft area in my bedroom that I block off with a beautiful screen that was hand carved. Blocks my view of craft supplies but also a decor piece! Look on Pinterest for some options, as well.
Still being a working artist at 80 is amazing! I hope I have the same energy levels when I'm 80!

Thanks Mike, I thought of using a big 100% cotton canvas drop cloth 6' x12',.(space is10'4") Great to have input! And yes, I am still a working artist, age is only a number Kassis! Karen, I like the idea of a screen too. But price wise it is over my budget is
@@sueandre7149 Do you have any help with this? I've seen people install some of the ikea wardrobe sliding doors on their ceilings and use them as large room dividers, but that may be difficult if you don't have someone to help. Curtains may be easiest thing to install. They have ceiling mount curtain rods that you could install if the ceilings aren't too high and you could open and close them as you need privacy. You could also DIY a few panels the same way he did the headboard in this video, wrap them in fabric, and connect them together with hinges so you can make a folding room divider.
I hope your aunt can film your Grandpa's reaction! I would love to see him! He's gonna love it!

That headboard looks like it can easily be like $2000 from some bougie furniture store and Drew just made it for a few bucks!
DIY headboards is the way to go these days. Save money and have a custom made headboard.
I learned a thing or two! Love the headboard, the vertical wall strips and all the pro tips, like caulking and centering cord covers. Nicely done!

For future reference you can also just cover paint brushes and rollers with aluminum foil and they won't dry out! No refrigerator needed!
Both my dad and (newly retired) grandpa have been professional painters for many years so I've learned a lot from them! 🥰

Ivy, thanks for this tip. I just painted one of my bedrooms and after washing the paint brushes put them into the sink to dry, but the next day they were so hard that I couldn't pull the bristles apart.
Wow good advice
Putting them in the refrigerator helps when you’re going a longer period of time between using the rollers and brushes. If I was just going an hour or two between uses, or even a few hours I just wrap them in plastic bags. But if I’m going several days between painting I put my rollers and brushes in the fridge.

Only change I'd make would be to use family photos blown up to fun sizes on that accent wall instead of generic, mass-produced art. This is Grandpa we're designing for. He's racked up a LOT of family by now and being able to see them every day would be so nice and personalized.
Grandpa might not like family photos. Just because he's old doesn't mean he automatically wants that. That's ageism!!

He's simply old enough, as a grandfather, to have more family to have pictures of than, say, a cousin the same age as Drew. Get over yourself and go troll elsewhere.

I think the reason he added the abstract paintings was because earlier in the video he did say he wanted to give this room a more or less long term hotel room vibe, and he also did say that original hometown house is where Grandpa's things will be mainly so nothing needs to be shifted or no need of huge storage, so that explains that its more or less like a temporary stay place that is comfy and warm and nice to stay at during his visit to family...Since his Grandpa will be switching between staying in his old hometown house and the new Arizona house for half of the year where his Aunt has shifted too along with his parents...So my guess is that the original house in his hometown already contains family pics since that is essentially the main home, whereas the Arizona home of his Aunt is more like temporary stay place when he visits them for half of the year...And since we have also seen hotel rooms normally do contain these abstract paintings and since he was going for the long term hotel room vibe the abstract paintings fit the puzzle...I hope my explanation makes sense😅

Superb job and so glad I came across this while I’m trying to redecorate my new room! My parents are handy people and made all the furnitures in our house. The woven cane reminded me of the sofa set they made back home a long time ago which had this for a backrest, except they handmade it themselves! I remember coming home from high school and seeing them work together to finish the set and I can’t even imagine the hours they spent just for the weaving alone. I feel very lucky though that we never had to buy furnitures for our house and whatever we needed, my dad custom-makes them by hand. :)
How amazing that you created a bedroom for your grandpa!! Having this space is going to make his time in AZ feel seamless, instead of like he's "staying over" with your aunt. As a therapist who often works with seniors, I can't tell you how important this is. I wish everyone had a grandson like you!
When picture frames have two hanging loops on the back, they are meant to have a piece of picture hanging wire strung between the 2 loops. You don't have to position a nail for each little loop. After you tie the picture hanging wire between the loops, then you can put picture hanging hooks on the wall and hang the wire on the wall hooks.

@@evelyntobias8081 Command picture strips are easier. Especially if you rent: They stick anything to your wall but don't leave marks when removed . But don't go for cheap imitation brands , they don't work.😁

I’ve purchased a couple mirrors and art work with those two hooks and the instructions specifically said do not hang with a wire. Because it compromises the integrity of the frame so it might fall or break since it isn’t meant to hang like that.

Beautiful!!!! You did a great job...I'm a grandmother of 75, and thought how thoughtful and loving for your grandpa!!!!
I love the end result - so warm and calm! A little suggestion though - please so include some sort of seating in the room, like an armchair or bench. For an older person it's really important to have seating to get dressed or simply sit and rest, and a high bed isn't always ideal as a sitting spot.
My sister moved out a few months ago and her old room is supposed to be my daughters now but I’ve been dreading making it over because it’s a dark pink😭 but this inspired me to just do it!!! Thank you, Drew!!🖤
Just use a paint that will cover like Kilz or Behr one-coat. Have fine with it!
You got this! You don't have to spend a bunch of money doing it unless you want to obviously. Lol I would definitely recommend Behr paint. The mid grade Behr with one coat coverage should be fine. Or get a good quality kilz or bullseye primer to be safe. If you go more quality on the primer any paint will cover it. If you do a good quality paint its gonna be a lot easier to wipe down and upkeep. I'm pretty sure Behr has the scuff proof paint with one coat coverage. They say it's amazing for kids rooms, hallways, mudroom or any high traffic area's. Best luck!

@@bluejay_j And ceilings! The corner where the wall meets the ceiling is the most important, getting that lopsided or just slapping on some tape and getting lots of bleed through makes it look so sloppy and once you start to notice it you can’t stop noticing it

yeah im from Arizona and its a HUGE state and decently cheap and most houses are bigger so this would be considered on the smaller size for sure in AZ

I would've painted the headboard black, I think it would stand out more... but it's my personal preference. The total transformation is fantastic!

Drew, I just found this video a year later. Thank you for making it. I have discovered many new ideas to use in my guest room. I live in a older house with bedrooms the size of the one you decorated for your Grandpa. So this to me is a more realistic transformation for a bedroom.. I totally agree! Whenever I get a new mattress, I always make sure to get a waterproof mattress protector. My mattresses always look brand new 10-15 years later.

Love it! One thing I do is when marking on the walls, baseboards, etc I use a wet erase marker so that after I'm done, I can just wipe it off with a wet/damp paper towel. It's just a little hack I thought of one day and I even do it on my textured walls with no issue on a eggshell paint. Its great too when doing a gallery wall

I really love that headboard! I just recently moved into a new apartment and it's the first time I'm living without roommates. Sooooo, I can finally decorate my space the way I've always wanted, and I'm totally going to make a headboard like that for myself!
