quick fun fact: that fire alarm box that locks your hand isn't as stupid as it looks. the piece that locks around your hand detaches from the box, meaning you can run away, you just have a cuff on your hand that identifies you until someone from law enforcement can release you. it's actually a pretty cool way to make sure that if people set off a fire alarm on purpose when there is no fire, they get punished.
I have always thought it was a very stupid design but nice to know it isn’t
until the fire reaches you
@@ethanwalters2999 that's the persons fault for running too slow then
yeah that makes more sense. I dont think any country would allow you to patent or produce a product that traps someone in a burning building on purpose, even in like the 30s or whatever.

Fun fact: that asbestos snow was used in the wizard of oz in the poppy scene. All those beloved characters were being covered in asbestos on top of their allergic reaction-causing makeup and real lion skin.
@VeeVee Uver The two meetings between the 'Wizard' and Dorothy's party were fairly tame.
@VeeVee Uver ...
Let's not forget, diving head first through double pane glass after the first meeting, and that was not a one-take and cut thing either. I said it was fairly tame.
They live-casted a tornado for a weather effect background. Send some lackey with a heavy arse camera, some film and a busted-arse transport for an hour's worth of film to be cut down in a dark room. Get paid a few hundred quid, maybe.
Pecos Hank would say this: "Get this kid outta here; way too dangerous a task for the untrained."
@VeeVee Uver ...
Indeed, you couldn't get away with half-arsed shit like that now, but the production of said film was a long time ago...
OSHA was not a even a thing back then. Just think about that.
The movie was made at the height of the Great Depression. These are the people who would go on to fight in WWII, charging uphill into machinegun nests. They didn't give a single fuck about their own lives or anyone else's.
@VeeVee Uver They were still using actual live ammo in movies at the time, too. They'd have sharpshooters shoot near the actors in a way that would (hopefully) ricochet away from them, or rig machineguns on mounts that wouldn't let them shoot in the places where the actors would be.
Despite all this and a few close calls, no one was ever actually killed.
With the invention of squibs (little explosives that simulate bullet impacts) the live ammo practice died out. Eventually. It was still cheaper to use live ammo, after all, and most actors were willing to put up with it because, again, zero fucks to give.
Fun fact: the "Don't drop anything" one is actually a floating restaurant. The structure is lifted by a crane into the air, and the diners are strapped onto their seats.

The fiberglass one is probably the most dangerous. If the bleeding into your lungs won't kill you, the infections resulting from it, may.
I studied design for a few years and the first thing they taught us is most decisions are made in less than an instant, especially purchasing decisions, this is why packaging and branding is so important, buying is almost an instinctive action, near identical packaging has in my life usually lead to me accidentally buying salad dressing instead of mayonnaise or the wrong type of cookie, but damn having your cold drinks and bleach nearly be indistinguishable is an utter failure of one of the first and most important aspects of design

Fun fact about the Reliant Robin:
In the UK, people with a motorcycle license can drive a 3-wheeler. The Robin was created so miners in the Yorkshire area could drive their families around without having to pay for car lessons & licenses; And the Robin was small enough to park on both sides of a terraced street without blocking the whole road.
"You don't need a license to drive this car" makes it even more worthy of this subreddit.
@RC2L Nice. It's amazing how us Brits can take what most people see as a joke and turn it into a classic with a strong following.

my friend actually has a story about how our school does the same thing. In 6th grade he was on crutches and during that time period the fire alarm went off. our math teacher didnt want him to be trapped in the building until it was over so he picks up my friend bridal style and brings him out of the building. I was absent that day so i missed it but its hilarious to us and now that ive remembered the story i am definitely going to remind him of it too.

That fiber glass mattress one really made me mad, like seriously, who puts fucking FIBER GLASS in a MATTRESS
Apparently its US law to make foam mattresses fire retardant.
and also it ruining pretty much everything that has cotton
Also why is fiberglass even a thing anymore
@@boredboi6279 Because its strong and lightweight? Its also used for insulation and fire proofing.
@@nekomasteryoutube3232 don't we have foam insulation now? Also wow I didn't know it was used for fireproofing I wonder if it is used in firefighters clothing or smth
A little while back I saw an explanation for the fire alarm that locks onto your wrist. The part that locks on detaches from the box when the alarm is pulled. You're still able to leave the building, you just have a piece of metal around your arm that you need the fire fighters to remove. It's not a great design, but it's at least not as bad as the picture makes it look.

No, I know for a fact that some don't, a red square(?) locks you in place and doesn't detatch. Its generally used in places with sprinkler systems (health issues ig) but still requires a key to free the person inside, it's used to deter vandals and false alarms.
9:12 I have the instinctive feeling that this was at least tested. Not for item loss, but human loss.
8:35 it helps to first understand that this is a top view looking down at the tops of the stairs. By staggering the steps left to right, it allows for a narrower stairwell. Having said that, this is probably the worst possible way to stagger the steps.
It is still a bad design
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE CANNONBALL LOOP: that "almost" involved people getting burns, getting stuck in the loop, and employees being paid to go down the thing to "test" it. They also used mannequins, some of which came out missing heads or limbs, and fudged the numbers to claim it was safe
Yeah, and not only that, but I've heard it was almost impossible to clean that part right before the loop (because apparently the people who designed it didn't know what a hatch is) , so sand and bunch of other sh*t would pile up right there.
@@capitalcoffee7514 YUP. It took multiple people getting trapped in the loop before they figured out it needed a hatch.
it was also designed on a napkin at a bar
@@jangamecuber you know, that's one of the least absurd things about that park that I've heard

Whoever filled the mattress with fiber glass, put a zipper on it, and put a "do not remove the cover" tag on the mattress was on a very interesting drug.
Another piece of dangerous design: a friend of mine has a genesis car and one of the safety precautions is that if the driver is not wearing a seatbelt while driving, the car will completely stop. So once, his niece was driving it to switch parking spots, she didn’t put it on. While on the turn, it stopped and wouldn’t move if she stepping on the pedal, so she was in a panic. Then she put the seatbelt on and it became fine again. (Imagine stopping on the shoulder of the highway, forgetting to put your seatbelt back on, and going back on it)
Don't forget your seatbelt then.
@@zuttoaragi8349
…you’re missing the point. It shouldn’t *unexpectedly stop.* It should either refuse to start moving if you aren’t already in motion, or scream at you (either as the “in motion” alternative or just for both cases).
6:06 It gets even worse. From what I've heard, the people who made that slide weren't even engineers, they had no experience in making waterslides, and when they tested it out using mannequins, some came back with huge dents in their heads and some completely decapitated. They managed to make the slide slightly safer and used employees to test out the slide, most employees came back with teeth missing. Despite this, they opened the slide anyway. Suprisingly the ride worked, other than the fact people would loose teeth, eventually, the lost teeth of the people who rode the slide got caught in the sides and ended up cutting people who rode the slide. All this may be a myth, but it's what I've heard.
nah you right, and unfortunately the slide is only one of the stupidly dangerous rides at that park. it's not a good sign when one of the "safest" rides in your amusement park is one of those slingshot rides you see in pop-up carnivals which often are on the sketchy side
Don't forget that it was literally designed by a guy with NO qualifications on a dinner napkin

3:54 The sad thing is, the whole point of "don't use the elevator when escaping from a fire" is for situations like this. Some people NEED the elevators and if everyone in a densely occupied building is trying to use the elevator, the traffic just won't be fast enough. Well, that and a couple of other reasons (Just like how you use the stairs so the disabled people can use the elevator, you also use the stairs so the firemen can use the elevator).
Isn’t it also that if the electricity cuts out you could be trapped in the elevator?
@@zap4th368 I think so, but consider that you're in a wheelchair and can't go down stairs. If you take the elevator and it stalls, you MIGHT die. If you don't do anything, you WILL die.

Generally, the drop on the slide wouldn't hurt someone badly, maybe just a little shock to the system. The problem is, the added momentum from riding the slide can actually hurt someone.

At a lot of adolescent impatient mental facilities that I have personally been in, this is horrifying common, it's worse if you have a roommate (not all hospitals do) because they're not allowed to put full doors, most only have curtains to divide the bedroom to the bathroom, or occasionally a half door with a rubber seal and no lock.
What is so horrifying is that the showerheads have almost always drenched the toilet and the sink, including your clothes since you can't leave your clothes outside of the bathroom, since there's always cameras. So you have to very carefully use the blanket you sleep with to shield your towel and clothing and try to dangle it off the sink and create a little tent to keep them in

2:36 Ouch, Google.
It seems that the snippet of the site they decided to show there was obviously part of a "Don't do" list. This is especially obvious by the "Put something in the person's mouth (this can cause tooth or jaw injuries)" part - they were explaining why that's a bad idea, which is something you'd find in a "Don't do" list.
It's not the site's fault, the people who made the site aren't evil, Google just decided to show an inappropriate part for the question.

My father has epilepsy. Awful mistake, google.
For real though, it is common for people having a seizer to bite their tongue, cheek, lip. It is dangerous to put anything in the mouth of a people having a seizer, as they could accidentally swallow something, bite YOU, or yes, break something. A person post-seizure is NOT coherent or entirely conscious. You can ask them to sit up a million times but they just can’t understand because they’re so disoriented.
It is suggested to help hold out the arms of a person having a seizer-they can scratch or hit themselves. But do not hold them down!
Goddam that one person who worked at google was an idiot .
So for the doctors office or hospital thermometer labeling, the probes get sanitized before and after each use, however once something is used rectally it can only be used rectally. Usually there's markers on which is which from the manufacturer
We just use different colors. Red is rectal, blue is oral. We do also have labels, but it makes it easier to tell at a glance which is which
what the fuck hospital are you going to where they dont just put a sleeve over the thermometer??
@@Yeen66 OK, firstly, using a rectal thermometer orally is just gross, even with a sleeve. NOBODY does that, no matter which hospital you go to.
Secondly, rectal and oral probes differ structurally and are calibrated differently.
Why isn't BROWN rectal though? The choice seems obvious.
when it comes to the thermometers, the boxes have the cover that goes over it and is only used once, but i still think its a good idea to make sure to not mix their uses.

The baby cage (although I agree it is a sign of urban hell) was actually made for a good reason. It helped babies get sunshine and fresh cool air to help fight tuberculosis. At least it’s much safer than the wooden basket a doctor recommended Eleanor Roosevelt used for her kid 🤷♀️ I guess
And then they got banned because the cage sometimes came detached from the window, sending the baby plunging to its death. This would work if it was built into the building or professionally installed, but I believe these were purchased and self-installed.
Laziness is a really horrible monster, isn't it? Just go outside with your baby to get some sunshine. It's good for both YOU and YOUR BABY, that's killing two birds with one stone.
@@LatchinOn Going outside at ground level in a city of that time period would result in baby and parent getting a big dose of tetraethyl lead from car exhaust. As dangerous as those cage things were in terms of fall risk, they at LEAST provided fresher air from higher up.
@@dbseamz They fell out of style a decades ago.
@@ericgolightly8450 fell out of style, or fell out of windows?
On the topic of the rectal and oral thermometers being labeled, those seem to be a multi-location use thermometer, in which case you need to reprogram it every time you want to use it in a different spot because of differences in body temperature. They probably just bought two and programmed one for oral and one for rectal, to avoid having to reprogram the damn thing every time they need to take a temperature differently. Especially seeing as those are the kind that have removable plastic one time use covers, so they not only get sanitized and cleaned but they don't have much if any contact to begin with.

These stupid knob shifters aren't super dangerous though, it's electronically controlled, it will not go into the gear you selected until the vehicle comes to a complete stop or at least a very slow speed. I believe an alert will also display and sound on the gauge cluster display telling you what you just did so that you can correct it. Terrible user experience and stupid? Yes. Some crazy super dangerous design? Not at all.
@@ixionn563 I've also seen designs that have multiple buttons instead of a dial or shifter.
I've driven with one (a ford focus). Took me like a second to figure out that the big dial with automatic shift markings in the area where the stick usually is and not even near where the radio volume nub, isn't a volume nub. Besides, why wouldn't you use the radio volume buttons on the steering wheel?
I think it's mostly so that if you forget to change back to parking, it automatically shifts to it. Not especially good or bad. Really a "who cares" design.
3:59 I've ridden this exact ferris wheel once, and boy was I terrified when I saw that very large ride on a pile of bricks.

9:45 It does not lock you to the wall, though; just gives you that bracelet that must be removed by a professional. I saw this before on a different video about a different subreddit, and that clarification was read by the narrator.
