Dan Bell's 2016 tour of the Rehoboth Mall:
• DEAD MALL SERIES : Reh...
In the 26th episode of the Expedition Log Series, we visit what is left of the Rehoboth Mall, in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The mall was under construction when I arrived, and luckily, I was able to get one last look at some of the vintage elements.
Come take a walk with me through this amazing mall!
Hey Guys! Here's a special ExLog for you all...I was able to gain access to the remains of the Rehoboth Mall late in 2017, and this is what I saw. The Post Office Annex now occupies this space, and I'm not exactly sure if the small corridor with the Radio Shack is still there, but I'll make efforts to go back to visit and get you all an update. Thanks for watching! Be sure to follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and to join the Discord channel for live Expedition Log updates! Links in the description!
Hey Sal. I know I must sound like a broken record by now lol, but your vlogs are truly something special. I honestly look forward to every release. This episode included of course. It's been years since I strolled the Rohobeth Mall. For the most part, the mall aesthetics appear the same as I remember it. Which besides the vacancies, doesn't surprise me lol. Thx for the mall status update. I enjoyed the visual tour today 👏🏻 Have a nice week.
I go to Ocean City NJ for vacation, you drive more south and take the ferry down to Delaware and eventually you end up in Rehoboth beach, I can’t believe this mall isn’t doing good, beautiful and small
That clown is a thing of nightmares! Lol great video!
its a demon clown lol
You do a thorough job with the history of mall research.
Thanks!
@@sal You are welcome.
I can't decide which is more nightmare inducing, Krinkles "we all float down here" de clown or what's left of that mall 😀
THE kLOWN
Now I know what Stephen King based his IT novel on. Geez I crinkled too only I call it shuddering
Rehoboth is my hometown. I have find memories of the mall as a young boy, as do many of my friends. Sad to see places like this go. Development is a massive problem in Rehoboth Beach and traffic truly is horrific on Route 1 still to this very day. Thank you for your informative video!
Great Job documenting the rapid changes in Americas retail and social environment. The dawn of the 21st century has brought on amazing changes at all levels. Thank you so much for your efforts they are much appreciated.
I appreciate, and like, all of the background info you gather.
you could make a tour of a funeral home or plane crash wreckage including the dead bodies seem entertaining. Respect.
I've been going to that beach every other year for basically my entire life. We went in the mall once, probably about 1998 and it was totally surreal. We parked and went in some weird back exit that was nearly pitch black and then went to a small movie theater. But wait, there's no mention of a theater in this video. Either it was very short lived or I'm misremembering. The only other movie theater within dozens of miles is movies at midway, which is massive. I've been there recently, it wasn't that. If I think of anything I will reply again. Anyway, the music and commercial were very fitting, not just because it's October, but it was fitting for the state that building is in.
You know what, I think the gym may have replaced the movie theatre. I couldn’t find any primary sources on the theatre and couldn’t substantiate it, which is why I didn’t mention it. I’m 100% accepting of a correction, though, so let me know if you have something concrete and I’ll add it to my pin!
@@sal That movie place was replaced with the gym next to peebles. I live across the hiway in back of Midway Center for the past 48 yrs.
I’m from Dover, Delaware and still live in Delaware. Used to go to that mall all the time growing up and into adulthood, with my family and friends, going to the beach for the summer. The movie theater there was awesome and so cheap. $5 features. It was much less crowded than the big Midway movie theatre that was close by to it. It was much more intimate and cozy. The last movie I saw there was “No Country for Old Men”. I also used to get fish there at the pet store they had. And the Chinese buffet was awesome. It was a small little mall, that locals really appreciated. It was never busy and crowded when I was there. Really made me sad watching this video; Its all gone now. It’s a piece of my youth and life, lost forever. Guess you really can’t go back in this life; everything eventually changes.
Also are you obsessed with a love of crows?? Because I am ❤️😂they are one of the most intelligent creatures on earth with a memory and face recognition far superior to humans. Just thought I’d ask given your name and all 👍
yep the gym replaced the theater, i went to it once back in probably 2006? they didn’t play new movies, their specialty seemed to be old films or some that had finished their original theatrical run by a year or so.
i also remember a very cool chinese buffet in this mall that sat across from where the radioshack was.
fond memories of this mall growing up in that area.
Great job dad
Ive been to the Wendy's across from this place a few times, i always wondered if it was a mall, but it seems so out of place, with Tanger outlets not too far away from this location its no wonder why this place never gained popularity. Another good mall to check out is the Blue Hen Mall in Dover De. It is completely dead as a mall and now is full of other businesses and even the department of labor has their offices their as well, the building still looks like a mall but run down, the parking lot looks like it hasnt been paved in decades. Its not too far away from the dover mall which never seems to be very busy neither. It has both name brand stores and other stores you dont expect to see in a mall. I live near the border of Delaware and Maryland and enjoy watching the dead mall series of the malls in Maryland like Annapolis and Glen Burnie cuz ive been to those places a few times. Keep up the good work Sal, i enjoy the vids. I remember when malls were the places to go to hang out and have fun, sad to see so many fall to the way side.
Thank you so much for cutting back the live streams. It’s hard for me to find time to watch them in between homeschool and family time. I love your dead mall videos because I can see them in my down time. Keep up the good work I enjoy seeing these malls that are not in my area.
Hey thanks for the feedback Beth! I want to produce stuff that you all like, and I have a new plan for the live-streams. I’ll have a new episode out for you soon!
Sal Your welcome! I’m looking forward to it!
Great video, Sal! I also hope they keep the main concourse. I'm also glad that Alterations by Soula is still going! They found a new spot in a strip mall on the Coastal Highway last year. Their store in the food court of Rehoboth Mall closed August 31st, 2017.
Love, love , love your channel Sal! So enjoy every video. Really appreciate all the time you put into researching the history of all the malls you share. You're very talented at filming and i can tell you're a great person as well.
A+++ Sal, I've seen alot of your videos and first I'm amazed to a point...that so many Mall's across many states you have covered..I really didn't think so many Mall's have closed..I live on Long Island, New York and we still have a couple of Mall's around and they are doing really great..Your delivery is perfect such a kool clear informative voice..your really a caring person..Keep it Up! until you can't any longer.. God Bless..Thank you for your videos.

Krinkle is almost as freaky as Animatronic Chuck-E-Cheese! 🙀
very informative sal..thank you..Greetings from Canada ..
I wonder what happened to the sweet couple that owned the alteration shop in the old food court?
They moved across town and opened up a shop in Lewes.
@@RawRealRetail good to hear they still have their business.
Mesmerazing video you did! It resonates with the best of soviet cinematography, a la Tarkovsky cinema at its best. Thanks for sharing, and God bless you!
There's also the long-forgotten Blue Hen Mall that used to be in Dover, DE.
My hometown mall baby!!
I really enjoy all the history you provide and work you put into these. Your opening graphics and music are well done, too. I got an almost Stranger Things vibe with this one, which is perfect for Halloween.
Seems like there’s a theme with Rehoboth Beach, and it’s that the residents do not enjoy traffic. lol. Having seen Route 1 in the summer, and living in South Jersey, I get it, but I feel like maybe there’s a bit of cutting off their nose to spite their face going on (?). Building stores does bring in traffic but it can also make your life more convenient as a resident. More places to shop = revenue and lower taxes (ideally). But it’s sad to see that a once busy mall is now what you’ve shown us. Reminds me of the once-great Echelon Mall, now Voorhees Town Center, which is basically just a business park with some overpriced apartments. It was *the* hangout for kids in the late 80s/early 90s, and now it’s just Boscov’s and a few restaurants clinging to life. Change can be good, but it can also suck. For us nostalgic people, anyway. But the retro commercial, loved it! I love old adverts, and that clown looked one bowl of Krispies away from turning into Pennywise.
"Thus all things change for the worse and then retrograde."(Virgil) In most cases I agree.
i remember this mall when it was in its most active, they had decent food court. in the corner the pebbles they had the fashion bug and a little mom and pop style lottery place/convenience store. The Roses store was a nice store, my grandparents would take me and my cousins there when we came to the beach during summer break. Great look at what once was. Thank you Sal. keep up the great work.
I used to come here on vacation all the time as a kid and was super happy when I stumbled upon this video. My family and I used to frequent the Chinese restaurant across from a pet store I remember. I have a vivid memory of seeing some sort of an eel in a fish tank and it freaked me out. I think the restaurant was next to tuesday morning and the pet store was to the right of radio shack. It was never a really busy place but I remember one of the last times we went there you could notice a few of the stores closing down.
Hi Sal, The commercial for the cereal was so epic! I really miss these small malls that were booming in their day. You have to go back because I'd like to see the changes! Thanks Sal!
Doing a great job Sal! Keep up the great work! I appreciate it!
Great work again Sal!! You never disappoint!! Keep up the great work!
That clown......a cereal-based nightmare fuel for sure.
Krispie looks like the killer clown on AHS. Another great video Sal, Jeep up the amazing work
I love the vintage clown commercials, not sure why people get creeped out lol
Thank you Sal for another wonderful vlog that not only shows but imparts knowledge as well - I never miss one of your logs....I find them all fascinating.....sorry I can't donate at this time but of all the people I watch on UA-cam (and there's a LOT) you are the one I would choose first.....you're awesome! ♥ Keep up the great work! you're a rockstar in my opinion!!
Haha! I've watched that Post Sugar Rice Krinkles commercial heaps of times on UA-cam before, makes me laugh so hard everytime lol!!! XD
Love this series
Thanks ❤️
Seeing the mall in that condition just spooks me out. I expect The Craftsman to come around the corner.
NEW EXLOG TIME! *grabs popcorn* This place is really a sight despite its size. Glad you captured it. :)
awesome stuff. Your videos are great. Thanks for taking your time to make them.
I enjoyed the video. The opening music and video footage, along with the clown; lends some creepiness to your production. Reminds me of the opener to a zombie film.
Love your stuff Sal, I wander properties all the time. Especially cemeteries.
Yes , we , Your viewers do love these expedition logs, , I myself check yours and a few others channels daily for new uploads, and a side note, please don't ever delete any live streams like some of the other dead mall creators do, it really turns the viewers off and away, Left you a big like here!!
As always another top notch expedition from Sal! This was excellent man. Thank you!
Just subscribed the music and atmosphere are perfect
Thanks Nick!
Say what you like about that cereal advert, but those Sugar Rice Krinkles were tast-ee!!
I bet they were!!!
Yes!! I loved them to!😢
Thank you for this. There also.used to be a movie theater where the gym currently is inside the mall. Went to see many movies there back in the day.
Great job Sal, as usual.
This video is awesome. The music was very well done. Thank You sal your awesome.
Dear lord, Kuh rinkles the clown makes pennywise seem downright cuddly.
I live in the same county as the mall is in - Sussex County. In fact, I was just there today, in Peebles however. The post office was built around what used to be the core of the food court and the outside of the post office forms a dimly-lit hallway around the old perimeter of the food court. The place is honestly depressing. A lot of people also forget to mention that the Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth is also a very likely large reason for this mall’s death.
It'd be really great to hear an update on this. I saw some pics on the discord and I couldn't really tell what I was looking at until after this video.
I remember Sugar Rice Krinkles cereal. But not the word sugar on the box. Just Rice Krinkles. We used to eat that cereal in the 70's then they quit making it for some reason.. I've actually wished they'd bring it back exactly as it was because it was a good tasting cereal lol!
As always, nice work!
Thanks!!
Come check out the what use to be blue hen mall in Dover DE. Also the actual dover mall up the road from the blue hen mall is close to being closed
Get video! Really liked it. Thanks for filming.
I just went to my local mall yesterday, well I a few of them, but this one I was surprised most of the stores were occupied, the one anchor Sears was closed, I remember going there when it opened, 1977
love Wallie & Ace! :) Groovy you all teamed up.maybe you all could do a major exploration together?
great video. thx
I live in Delaware and go to rehobeth every summer☀️great video
Do you go to the Byrd beach in Rehobeth?
Wow... I just unsubscribed after the last live stream a couple of days ago, and then this one popped up in UA-cam's recommendations. And here you're telling us you're cutting down on the live streams, etc... So I resubscribed. :-)
Hey, I appreciate that! I listen to my viewers, and I want you all to enjoy the content!
For what it’s worth, I’ll most likely be making a second channel for live-streams and stuff that didn’t make it into the main series, just so we can keep this channel on the straight and narrow.
That would be nice, at least for me. Ofcourse I can't speak for others, maybe a lot of people do like mixed channels. For example Dan Bell has a very good reputation in this genre, but I don't watch his dead mall videos for the same reason: too much clutter. I just happen to like channels with a strong focus.
I’ll be making a second channel for live streams and cutting room floor clutter :) I heard you, and I’m adjusting for you!
I enjoy your livestreams. And its a good way to get to know you better. It makes your channels more personal i think. I'm glad you aren't going to stop them completely. Theres room for both.
I live pretty close to that mall and always wanted to go in but never did. There was actually another micro mall in ocean city that was anchored by a grocery store and a roses that was torn town very recently. The roses grocery store still stand, and the roses has a strange atrium sort of thing on the end. I have no idea what the inside of the mall looked like cause it has been closed as long as I can remember but I would assume it was very 70s like most things in ocean city MD
There was once a Chinese place that was really good and an arcade down that concourse, near the Radio Shack. That corner next to the Peeble’s entrance was a bookstore/newsstand at one time.
that mall is kinda reminiscent of the 94th st mall in ocean city,md which is now demolished except for roses and acme formerly a A&P
Krinkles the Clown sure makes me want to cry.
I remember Dan Bell's video on this. I want to know what happened to the mall's last interior store, a small husband and wife tailor service. They were in the food court (I think the pink wall was the back of their shop). They seemed so nice. Hope they found a place to move to.
Ah yeah they moved into Lewes which is a nearby town, and from what I know they're doing quite well :)
You gonna do the gold coast mall? That place looked very interesting.
Yep, that’s ExLog 28!
does not make sense they demolished part of the mall to relieve traffic problems but wanted to build a Walmart which would bring more traffic
Spud 153 that’s Delaware for you (I can say that cause I’m a resident and native of Delaware 😂). Aubrey Plaza is a perfect example of how Delawareans are. Some call us wierd, we just call each other by our names (or not at all) 🤣😂(please note-if you don’t know who Aubrey Plaza is, look up some of her interviews on here; classic example 👍)
This mall should be thriving. Delaware Route 1 carries lots of traffic to and from the beach each summer. In recent years Sussex County has grown as a prosperous retirement community particularly attracting well off retirees from the Washington DC area. It appears that bureaucracy on the part of local and state officials and poor decision making led to the demise.
What happened to the theater that used to be in there? I remember going there to see movies a lot. The entrance to the theater was in the food court.
For anyone wondering, the old mall is no more. What was left of it as seen in this video is now, indeed as said in the video, a building used for the United States Postal Service.
That clown...Ugh!
Sal, great back story on the mall; don’t usually get that with other dead mall vids. Kinda hypocritical to tear down part of the mall due to too much traffic and then proceed to build a Wally World in its place. I worked at the Roses store when it opened. It was something of a prototype for the chain. The store manager was an intense little man who’s toupee kept sliding sideways. The store did well, but soon after opening in ‘86 there was a stockroom fire; we spent days culling through good versus bad merch and put a lot of it out in the fire lane for a big yard sale. I remember the Superfresh grocery store had an awesome fresh seafood dept. I guess Pebbles is the sole survivor.
And now I know why my parents hate Clowns!!!!!
The first dead mall video I've seen that was due to too much traffic lol.
Richard Crane funny part is you should see the traffic now in summer bumper to bumper a normal 25 min drive to where ever in Rehoboth takes you about 1 an 25 mins
Hi Sal ! I happen to love your live streams. Love the series. That clown though...😕 spooky! Keep up the great work! What happened to your hair?
First! Sal rules!
Good video :)
I was in Rehoboth Beach and went to Michael’s and saw the older building and went through the alley and even saw the mall letter ps because the michaels was that close
The entire Rehoboth Beach area, along Route 1, has become a miles long parade of tawdry, trashy 'outlets' and sundry other vile offences on the landscape.. The last 20 years have seen an appalling level of blight decent on this, once respectable area of Delaware.
Not many tiny malls left
That clown totally has bodies hidden somewhere.
2002 me and my buddies were staying down the side road there. And I remember us eating at the Chinese buffet and it was the worst buffet I’ve ever been too. I think it might have been called panda something?
How sad..
Walmart is packed
Alec Dupuis here . @watchmebealec @sal that clown advertisement was from 1953 I think !! Insane .
Hey this the same exact mall that was featured in Dan Bell's video awhile back! Am I right? Because there was an elderly couple running the place some guy mentioned in the comments.
Yeah! He put a video out in 2016 while it was still in operation. Here’s an update video with the full history :)
The background music - what is it?
Krinkles is scary af.
Oh yes. It doesn’t get much creepier
That's funny how they were worried about traffic all those years ago and now fast forward to today, they just keep building to attract more tourists. How times change
Clowns don’t scare me.
At first I thought he was talking about the other Krinkels (author of Madness Combat that featured Tricky the Clown)
"Mall closed today"
*cuts to inside*
Rice crispy.... Clowns are creepy; I'm glad I'm OK/cool with them
"Imagine being able to be magically whisked away to....Delaware. Hi, I'm in Delaware."
Weren't the people complaining about the traffic the same people who were shopping there? What happened to the Walmart? Did it relocate? I can see not wanting a Walmart located close to where one lives. Their customers are definitely sketchy.
Krinkles should do the videos
Krinkles was one creepy ass clown. What a freaky commercial that must have been for the kids at that time in history. Just plain scary and weird.
1:32 wait a minute I don't remember that zoom in....
The small town destroyed the mall not lack of business. It also says the residents of the town where really unfriendly people.
That clown tho FFS :-(
Krinkles the Clown...yikes. Good find, however!
So maybe I misunderstood. The city wanted the mall to reduce its size by 10,000 sq ft to help ease traffic but the space was going to be part of a Walmart?
They detached the Walmart, and it had no mall access. I’m guessing it was some legal way to force less traffic
@@sal just seems counterintuitive. Adding a Walmart will only increase traffic in an area. usually they create major congestion.
krinkles the clown is like something out of david lynch.
