The *skeleton head is the wrong one for this set;* it should be the normal face. As is typical for Bricklink-sourced vintage sets, there were a number of missing or substituted parts in this one, though the seller was very well-reviewed and included a manually-completed checklist supposedly covering every single piece. I simply missed the skelly head substitution, myself.

I love the raised baseplates honestly, they do a great job of adding mass to a build, while keeping the price down. I mean imagine if they tried to recreate this with normal pieces and how much that would've inflated the price for this set. Also the complaint people often have with these plates is "it inspires no creativity" which in my opinion is a false statement, as it inspires it actually a lot for children, that have an idea, but dont find the point to start their build. Put this plate in front of them and they feel like they already achieved a start which they can build upon. It works great with every child I know. When friends are invited and they bring kids, I often give them a box of LEGO to keep them entertained over the day and what they always use are these baseplates for their builds. Esspecially when they "don't know what to build" it really helps to just give them one of these plates.
I remember raiseplates and other baseplates supplied was a big selling point when i was looking for a set back in the day, they tied things together nicely and gave these sets a sense of wholeness.
I agree. I had this base as a kid back then. I think mine was grey from a newer set. The base can really be used for so many things. I used to build bridges over it with the big brick and had a tunnel underneath. So I actually used it mostly for playing with cars if I remember correctly. Later once my Lego skills got better I used to make traps with boulder slides that would go down the "canyon" onto the enemys. Overall I think these large pieces can really bring value to these sets as you said. It is however targeting really young kids and will probably become uninteresting at age 12 and older.
The crazy thing is that this set is from *2000* - it could easily be from the 80s, if not for that missile launcher! Not that that's bad or anything, it gives off a really nice old school charm - but it's crazy to think that Knight's Kingdom II was only 4 years earlier, and that Fantasy Era was only 7!
Also interesting: For this line there was a set (6094) that is like an Add-On set to this castle. It includes 2 more towers, you can change out with the towers on this castle, a prison and a treasury tower with excalibur in it :-)
I miss how Lego sets use to have lots of space on the inside for you to place minifigs. Nowadays, there are barely any space on the insides, which decreases the playability for some people.

I like how that base plate feels kind of like an old ruin submerged in grass. It feels like something you might find in the English countryside as a remnant of ancient people.
Great review Jang! One small additional note: the modular sections of the castle were also spread throughout the theme. If you got one of the smaller sets you could swap it in with part of the castle for more customization!
I remember seeing this set in Zellers when I was a kid, I always thought that huge baseplate was really cool. Even today I still want to acquire one, I think it would be pretty interesting to play around with.
Zellers was the Canadian kids go to for LEGO, especially before toys r us was as big of a thing in Canada! So many great memories walking down the LEGO aisle planning my Christmas wish list. I remember seeing and wanting this too. I still have all my LEGOmania and Shop-at-home magazines from the 90’s and early 00’s, and there was an entire one dedicated to this and the backstory of King Leo and his knights.
I got this set for christmas and adored it. I had no idea the queen was the queen, I thought she was the princess and that the princess was just a female knight, who I used as the hero pretty much every time. I don't remember that treasure chest thing ever working that well and I'm pretty sure I just demolished and converted that square to more usable space. The giant lion banner got the boot immediately. As a kid you don't quite collect themes so perfectly so I remember having bits and pieces of other castle themes, so fright knights and dark forest men were sieging this thing non-stop.
I remember when Lego created adventurers, power miners, monster fighters, pharoa's quest, and space. At least Ninjago and hidden side are more creative then building something from movies and comics all the time.
I guess you could try gumtree, well thats what we use in australia, or bricklink to get one but good luck in these times postage would be really difficult and expensive cuz of the covid situation
to me that stained glass window would be a trap window. put a lego figure on the tabs in front of it when they are inside, and have them spin around to the outside, trapped on the top of the castle. or think of it as a hiding spot when evading the enemies.

I miss the time where lego made this custom baseplates... I think they are so much fun to play with, absolutely as a child! I think some lego sets should be more like this, I find that lego sets somethimes are too complicated for what they are supposed to be. I think making a difference between sets for children and adults is great because they can simplify some sets more.
Back in the 80s/90s my father and his brothers had a bunch of the old medieval stuff that I inherited. It's funny that the molds were basically the same, and the only difference between those Legos and this set is that this set has more detailed prints. I mean they're 30-40 years old but they're still in extremely good condition. A real testament to the quality of Lego.

I’ve really loved the raised baseplates as a child! They‘ve also used it in 7419. And the baseplate of 5978 was my favorite!!! I’ve used to collect all my gold and treasures under the gray area! I do miss these functions.

Same here! Castle makes up 27% of my collection with space coming second at 18%. The only Ice Planet set I'm missing is the Deep Freeze Defender. It's my goal to eventually find one on eBay and complete the collection.
This set and the Egyptian Mummy Tomb set had the best base plates for create your own castle bases. I never had this one, but the base plate on the other was one of my favorites.
I got the Orient Expedition "Dragon Castle" when I was 7-8 in 03' or 04' and that had a very similar setup; Exact same molded base but in a different color, large brick tower base piece for the castle. But instead of medieval, it was an east Asian fortress. Had around 200 more pieces too.
You know what I'd like to see? Classic lego sets reworked and re-imagined to more modern building methods and pieces. Not giant hyper detailed mocs (although cool on their own) sets you could imagine seeing being sold as real sets.
I got this for Christmas back in 2000. This was the ultimate Christmas present for me and I adored it. Thank you for this really great nostalgia trip 20 years later 😍

To me Castle peaked with the Fantasy Era and Kingdoms sub-themes. Would love to see some reviews from those lines, or Vikings which is begging for a reboot.
I wish lego would make a retro re-release series, so like these castle sets, ufo, space, insectoids, rock raiders, pretty much anything from that time. They have all the molds, so it wouldn't be as expensive as today's molds and pieces, but knowing lego, they would up the price beyond the value.
I was six when this came out and I’ll never forget how it felt like the size of a real castle to me! It’s just so large and so simply; really the epitome of imaginative play
I ended up getting two of the Snape's Potion Class set for my birthday (from separate relatives) the year that came out; they came with those "basebricks" and a similar construction aesthetic to that castle.
The build style here is what I'm very familiar with. I think they continued this type of junior-ified, heavy reliance on massive bricks and specialized pieces for some time. Even the first line of Harry potter sets followed a similar design, and I have a bunch of massive dark gray bricks from those. I couldn't put my finger on the reason as a kid but I found these sets a little underwhelming. Now I realize the reason: I fell in love with LEGO after playing the very first LEGO ISLAND game, which featured builds from earlier 90's sets which had a lot more detail. They featured car builds from the 1996 set "Indy Transport" and similar style of indy cars. I could not recrate them with the set I got "Speedway Transport" from 1999. The difference is very obvious now. The intricate details of the 1996 set and the very brick based and blocky 1999 set really puts in to perspective how much LEGO had fallen. The lack of detail meant small piece count, which also made it much more difficult to create custom stuff. I even remember the moment I noticed this difference. One of the first sets I had ever gotten was the "Rig Racers" from 1998. Then, years later, for some odd reason the set "Rally Racers" from 1996 was floating around stores in big numbers and I got one as a gift. The two sets pretty much had the same exact concept: One white-blue and and one red-black truck racing with some bonus accessories. Being able to personally build every single headlight on one of those trucks was much more rewarding and fun then the printed bricks of the set from 1998. I even remember trying to explain this to my family, though they probably didn't get it. It took them some time, but I'm so happy that LEGO embraced the more detailed sets as the norm and created a separate junior line for that demographic. I think even the basic City sets have a lot more intricate detail now. Not to mention the more advanced sets, like the modular buildings. They always bring me joy whenever I look at them (but there's no way I'm buying one! They serve their purpose as inspiration to me).
Those large bricks are awesome. Lots of the original Harry Potter sets used them as bases for rooms in Hogwarts. The first couple of waves were essentially modular rooms that could all be joined together. Another great video, Jang! Stay safe

I love the giant shaped baseplates. I got hold of one when i visited my hometown, where a new store focused on Lego had opened up. they sold a lot of both new and secondhand sets, and tons of individual minifigures, classic stuff and assorted loose bricks. It was an amazing store, and i got an awesome raised baseplate for an Ice Planet build i was working on, as well as a ton of the trans neon redish orange parts to use too. Those raised baseplates really give some great opportunities and some fantastic life to a build
"Knights #1 and #2" actually do have names; The one with red arms is "Richard the Strong, with the black arms and brown mustache being "John of Mayne". The both had a modest amount of story from what little content LEGO did make for the line (some magazine/website stuff, a DK Level 2 Readers story book, and their own dedicated Creator game)
I remember getting this exact set for my 4th or 5th Christmas and my Mum had built it up for me and presented it to me, I was so happy and it makes me just as happy seeing it again on your channel!

Mr. Empanada I totally agree, even as a kid I love the look and playability of the set, however little it may be. (I do not have the set but like some of the older sets and have a few like the pirates castaway raft and for Christmas I got the black falcon castle/fortress, sorry for the long comment though I agree Jang should do the black knight’s castle)
You mean set 6086? I love that set! I bought it with my saved up Christmas and birthday gifts in 1992. Back then it was called the Dungeon Master's Castle. Lego did a great job integrating the baseplate with castle in that set. I actually prefer that original raised baseplate over all of the later ones.
Thank you Jang and all your supportes! I have some nostalgia feelings about that series, but to be honest, I feel that the golden era of Lego is now. All the designs is way more intresting and detailed, I miss only wide baseplates
You could challenge yourself by using this baseplate in Jangcity ! I am really hyped imagining what type of clever solution you find to use it by more modern standards.
If I remember correctly, this was my first set I got (along with some other smaller castle themed sets) and built as a kid. Definitely hammered the nostalgia in the head on this one
My first ever set was from this line, close to probably 25 years ago. It’s very fun to see you get all worked up and excited about old builds and the baseplate. It seemed like all the lines at that time had 1-2 big baseplate sets. The cooler you were, the more plates you had. You did a great job highlighting a lot of the fun features here. Agree that some of these prints were incredible and we miss some of the more niche pieces today (plumes for sure). But boy was that rotating stain glass a standout piece as a child! I would love to see them do something like that again, even just with a new stained glass print!
Growing up I had a number if 8x16 bricks that I always used to make multiple-story apartments. Though all the ones I had at the time were green, but if I recall correctly, the walls were marbled with random colours anyway. Good memories! I honestly hadn't even noticed they'd been phased out until you started pointing them out
Because of the early Harry Potter sets I have quite a lot of the gray 8x8 and 8x16 bricks. They where used as bases all the time and you could stack the sets on top of each other.
This was my first Lego set, it was a christmas present and I remember loving it SO MUCH.. I played a lot and re-built it multiple times in different configurations. I had so much fun! So many unique pieces and so much space to play around compared to today's standard!
It wasn’t quite the same, but I have fond memories of the “L” shaped, raised-baseplate lego used a few times in the 2000’s. I got one from both the police set as well as an Indiana Jones set. They were so useful for quick mocs!
the fact you're so blown away by those thick bricks makes me realise how long i've been out the game for .. they where the norm in the majority of the first harry potter sets I collected as a kid. i thought these where still being used ..

They let me choose my big tticket item from the toy shop and this was it. at $100AUD it was very expensive for my family back then. I still have it to this day, and recently found it at my parents place and reassembled it. again, thank you for this video, another trip down memory lane!
This set and 6425 TV Chopper are the Lego heroes of my childhood (besides plenty of bricks). I love this set just for the memories building it up at Christmas.
This was really the time when LEGO had gone for "simplicity" in design. I have no idea why. I remember the kits my younger brother was getting around this time was so boring to build compared to the things I played with just 10 years prior. We too have raised plates for our castles, but the castles at least had a building process to it that didn't make you feel like LEGO thought you were dumb.
I have a huge box of old legos from back when I was little. All kinds of stuff from my self and four older siblings. Recognize a lot of these parts, so I guess we had a Leo's castle or something back in the day.
I was born in 1982, started to play LEGO in 1990. The new sets are maybe more detailed f.ex. city vehicles but for me the older ones from 90's and 80's were the best, so cool and cute.
Lego used to make different styles of these raised baseplates, some more usefull then others. From Classic Space i had those grey plates with a crater in one corner. The one used in this set really helps to create présence for this castle. Thanks for showing this Jang
Oh nostalgia. The Bull guys were my favorite. I collected so many of them that I created a small army. They occupy my largest custome castle castle. I actually always loved that large baseplate, you can build some cool stuff on that.
This brings me back. I didn't have this one as a kid as I was more into the bad guys from this theme. I do have one of those huge base plates though from the Adventurers theme a few years later
This takes me back so much. Never had this set, but I had lots of the pieces and minifigures from other sets from around this time. During quarantine I've been getting most of the 1998/99 Ninja sets. Those forts are built in very similar ways too with big parts and lots of gaps

In the game Lego Creator Knights Kingdom, the Knights were named. Knight 1 is Richard the Strong, and Knight 2 is John of Mayne.

I miss those base plates soo much. They added so much value and depth.
This was the last set I got before my 20 year long dark age. I'm glad to see someone else is excited over it.
I ended up getting two of the Snape's Potion Class set for my birthday (from separate relatives) the year that came out; they came with those "basebricks" and a similar construction aesthetic to that castle.
Jang, your cutaway references during this episode were top tier!
The build style here is what I'm very familiar with. I think they continued this type of junior-ified, heavy reliance on massive bricks and specialized pieces for some time. Even the first line of Harry potter sets followed a similar design, and I have a bunch of massive dark gray bricks from those. I couldn't put my finger on the reason as a kid but I found these sets a little underwhelming. Now I realize the reason: I fell in love with LEGO after playing the very first LEGO ISLAND game, which featured builds from earlier 90's sets which had a lot more detail.
They featured car builds from the 1996 set "Indy Transport" and similar style of indy cars. I could not recrate them with the set I got "Speedway Transport" from 1999. The difference is very obvious now. The intricate details of the 1996 set and the very brick based and blocky 1999 set really puts in to perspective how much LEGO had fallen. The lack of detail meant small piece count, which also made it much more difficult to create custom stuff.
I even remember the moment I noticed this difference. One of the first sets I had ever gotten was the "Rig Racers" from 1998. Then, years later, for some odd reason the set "Rally Racers" from 1996 was floating around stores in big numbers and I got one as a gift. The two sets pretty much had the same exact concept: One white-blue and and one red-black truck racing with some bonus accessories. Being able to personally build every single headlight on one of those trucks was much more rewarding and fun then the printed bricks of the set from 1998. I even remember trying to explain this to my family, though they probably didn't get it.
It took them some time, but I'm so happy that LEGO embraced the more detailed sets as the norm and created a separate junior line for that demographic. I think even the basic City sets have a lot more intricate detail now. Not to mention the more advanced sets, like the modular buildings. They always bring me joy whenever I look at them (but there's no way I'm buying one! They serve their purpose as inspiration to me).

Those large bricks are awesome. Lots of the original Harry Potter sets used them as bases for rooms in Hogwarts. The first couple of waves were essentially modular rooms that could all be joined together. Another great video, Jang! Stay safe

Oh WOW! This Castle is a beast! I love it and the baseplate is knockout 😃 I'm in love with the Minifigures too. The Queen's so cool, she looks so Medieval ❤
I remember I got this for Christmas when it came out. I loved this set. Looking back, yes, lego has changed so much from then to now

I love the giant shaped baseplates. I got hold of one when i visited my hometown, where a new store focused on Lego had opened up. they sold a lot of both new and secondhand sets, and tons of individual minifigures, classic stuff and assorted loose bricks. It was an amazing store, and i got an awesome raised baseplate for an Ice Planet build i was working on, as well as a ton of the trans neon redish orange parts to use too. Those raised baseplates really give some great opportunities and some fantastic life to a build
"Knights #1 and #2" actually do have names; The one with red arms is "Richard the Strong, with the black arms and brown mustache being "John of Mayne". The both had a modest amount of story from what little content LEGO did make for the line (some magazine/website stuff, a DK Level 2 Readers story book, and their own dedicated Creator game)
I like the medieval theme it's very interesting
this was my first lego set every that I got for Christmas
I think that 6 year old me would adore this it would be just fantastic
I remember getting this exact set for my 4th or 5th Christmas and my Mum had built it up for me and presented it to me, I was so happy and it makes me just as happy seeing it again on your channel!

Great review! I had so much fun with this set as a kid. I used to use the holes under the towers (4:41) as prison cells for the bad guys! And thanks a lot Jang, I'll never unsee Gilbert the Bad's crosseyed eyepatch lol
I still have this set. I remember playing with it so much as a kid. It was my favorite Lego castle. So much room for imaginative play.

I am severely regretting not giving the whole castle theme more love when I was a kid. Looking back those sets seem like so much fun.
I used the 4 holes as dungeons and for hidden treasure.

Mr. Empanada I totally agree, even as a kid I love the look and playability of the set, however little it may be. (I do not have the set but like some of the older sets and have a few like the pirates castaway raft and for Christmas I got the black falcon castle/fortress, sorry for the long comment though I agree Jang should do the black knight’s castle)
You mean set 6086? I love that set! I bought it with my saved up Christmas and birthday gifts in 1992. Back then it was called the Dungeon Master's Castle.
Lego did a great job integrating the baseplate with castle in that set. I actually prefer that original raised baseplate over all of the later ones.
Thank you Jang and all your supportes! I have some nostalgia feelings about that series, but to be honest, I feel that the golden era of Lego is now. All the designs is way more intresting and detailed, I miss only wide baseplates
With the spinning wall and stained glass window, my first thought was trapdoors/secret entrances. Definitely a lot of play value.
You could challenge yourself by using this baseplate in Jangcity ! I am really hyped imagining what type of clever solution you find to use it by more modern standards.
If I remember correctly, this was my first set I got (along with some other smaller castle themed sets) and built as a kid. Definitely hammered the nostalgia in the head on this one
My first ever set was from this line, close to probably 25 years ago.
It’s very fun to see you get all worked up and excited about old builds and the baseplate. It seemed like all the lines at that time had 1-2 big baseplate sets. The cooler you were, the more plates you had.
You did a great job highlighting a lot of the fun features here. Agree that some of these prints were incredible and we miss some of the more niche pieces today (plumes for sure).
But boy was that rotating stain glass a standout piece as a child! I would love to see them do something like that again, even just with a new stained glass print!
I used to love that Baseplate back in the Day! Built so many Labs and Hotels on that thing. Also really liked the Set.
Growing up I had a number if 8x16 bricks that I always used to make multiple-story apartments. Though all the ones I had at the time were green, but if I recall correctly, the walls were marbled with random colours anyway. Good memories! I honestly hadn't even noticed they'd been phased out until you started pointing them out
Because of the early Harry Potter sets I have quite a lot of the gray 8x8 and 8x16 bricks. They where used as bases all the time and you could stack the sets on top of each other.
This was my first Lego set, it was a christmas present and I remember loving it SO MUCH.. I played a lot and re-built it multiple times in different configurations. I had so much fun! So many unique pieces and so much space to play around compared to today's standard!
What an amazing set. Lego used to be so creative in their pieces. That is by far the biggest set I have seen with only 529 pieces.
It wasn’t quite the same, but I have fond memories of the “L” shaped, raised-baseplate lego used a few times in the 2000’s. I got one from both the police set as well as an Indiana Jones set. They were so useful for quick mocs!
It's such a nostalgia trip seeing this set again, one of the old castle sets me and my brother always wanted as a kid.

the fact you're so blown away by those thick bricks makes me realise how long i've been out the game for .. they where the norm in the majority of the first harry potter sets I collected as a kid. i thought these where still being used ..

Excellent video! My parents bought me this set for christmas of 2000 and I still remember it well. They let me choose my big tticket item from the toy shop and this was it. at $100AUD it was very expensive for my family back then. I still have it to this day, and recently found it at my parents place and reassembled it. again, thank you for this video, another trip down memory lane!
This set and 6425 TV Chopper are the Lego heroes of my childhood (besides plenty of bricks). I love this set just for the memories building it up at Christmas.
This was really the time when LEGO had gone for "simplicity" in design.
I have no idea why. I remember the kits my younger brother was getting around this time was so boring to build compared to the things I played with just 10 years prior.
We too have raised plates for our castles, but the castles at least had a building process to it that didn't make you feel like LEGO thought you were dumb.
Ah man I always wanted this set, growing up with the 2007 LEGO Castle sets it gives me great Nostalgia to see any thing knights in LEGO.
I have a huge box of old legos from back when I was little. All kinds of stuff from my self and four older siblings. Recognize a lot of these parts, so I guess we had a Leo's castle or something back in the day.
I was born in 1982, started to play LEGO in 1990. The new sets are maybe more detailed f.ex. city vehicles but for me the older ones from 90's and 80's were the best, so cool and cute.
Lego used to make different styles of these raised baseplates, some more usefull then others. From Classic Space i had those grey plates with a crater in one corner.
The one used in this set really helps to create présence for this castle. Thanks for showing this Jang

Oh nostalgia. The Bull guys were my favorite. I collected so many of them that I created a small army. They occupy my largest custome castle castle. I actually always loved that large baseplate, you can build some cool stuff on that.
This brings me back. I didn't have this one as a kid as I was more into the bad guys from this theme. I do have one of those huge base plates though from the Adventurers theme a few years later

This takes me back so much. Never had this set, but I had lots of the pieces and minifigures from other sets from around this time. During quarantine I've been getting most of the 1998/99 Ninja sets. Those forts are built in very similar ways too with big parts and lots of gaps
