What jewels of teaching. I particularly appreciated his saying most people are disappointing. It made me realize as he said that the reason I am disappointed is that I expect people to behave decently. But there is absolutely no empirical evidence in my life to support those expectations.
Dr Hanson I know this is 3 years old but reading Buddha’s brain was monumental in me healing from anorexia nervosa 12 years ago. Your book as well as Buddhist mindfulness meditation helped me see the thought patterns and beliefs that kept me stuck, by shining the light of awareness on them
Thank you Rick. I've been dealing with GAD, panic disorder and depression for 30 years now. I discovered mindfulness meditation (via JKZ's Full Catastrophe Living) a dozen years ago, and this was a great primer and sent me on the path, but honestly your way of teaching and explaining the Buddhist mind science of it all - describing the science in understandable ways, tying everything together (the distinction between aversion and grit is especially appreciated), while keeping it so brilliantly non-airy fairy - is second to none IMO. Much gratitude.
I agree, perfect post. Iv dabled at nearly every teacher but JKZ, dr Hanson and thich naht han have been my best 3 teachers over the past 12 years for me as well
Thank you so much, my parents are Buddhism but I was not. You have guided me back to my root to understand the philosophy of life in a more meaningful way. Your talk has opened up my heart and my mind.
Hi Rick, I love ur content, but just a mindful note, unfortunately the amount of narcissists and psychopaths is much larger than has been studied as we all agree they typically don’t come to therapy and can also be quite crafty at hiding it. For survivors like me, that had a full family and have come across many narcissistic people, it makes us feel marginalized to think that we are only interacting with 10% of the population. I’ve studied about it, and sadly there are a lot of them out there. Especially in America, look at our last president. I’ve had a history of therapists mimimizing my soul crushing experience by instantly going to talking about “healthy narcissism” which in my opinion is not a thing… you being extremely articulate, im sure can understand there are so many other terms for self esteem, self protection, self compassion etc. The continual reference that the world and people for the most part are safe makes me and others whom have had many experiences with these types feel shame.. as if it must be me… and im living on the outskirts. With love and gratitude ❤ also always open to your feedback. I’d love to live in a “safe” world, but denial about how many people are has kept me just bringing in new ones…
Everything you went through as a young person was because they new you would be ok later as you are now. They were trying to level the playing field. I would rather be smart and have it known than seen as a sexual creature to be exploited from early on. That is what you missed. You wanted that because its so normal?

Is being of the level of awareness stable if awareness does not exist with nothing to be aware of, that which is continually instable?
How can I understand a long time friend who supports DJT?
