    *In another time, you'd have made one heck of a pony express rider! Loved the "quiet cantering" best, no words needed. What a terrific horse you have, especially because he likes this adventure.*

    Lasair seems like a Secretariat of endurance racing. Even his name is dreamy. He’s quite a horse, you are quite a rider, that’s quite a sport. I feel it was a great treat to share in some of that experience. 💕🐴

    I love how you can keep your horse going in a straight line while not using any reins! My mare would go off to the left or right like it was none of her business. Hoping to work on riding with loose rein and hopefully a little more speed this year! Great work!

      Thank you!! Lasair used to have that problem where he'd weave around on trail like a drunk. He still does it sometimes, but in a race, he is all business. He will go over our under anything I point him at.

      Just out of curiosity because it was something Jack the thoroughbred I had used to do - at one stage is he bounding when you are trying to slow him?

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  6 років тому +1

      Not sure what you mean, but if I'm using the reins to slow him, then he's not listening. I use my seat and voice to signal him. Reins are my absolute last resort.

    • @myraking1792
      @myraking1792 6 років тому +1

      It's just that his head was going up and down, when you those others were coming alongside, but must have just been his action. Jack would do something similar when cantering, nothing to do with reins either. Congrats again, you are both super fit and look fabulous!

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  6 років тому +1

      Oh, that was very bad. That's him surging and pounding to fight me. That's how he tore my shoulder, by slamming his head down. Usually, I wouldn't even try to hang on because I know I'm no match for that, but I was trying my best because the other riders were trying to pass. No, that was very bad and him actively arguing with me. Usually, I have to be prepared for a pass so I stay on top of his mindset. Here, I was caught by surprise on the pass and so was behind his mind. Then every moment they stayed next to him instead of passing was making it worse.

      @@NAubc Hi NAubc, thank you for your answer! I assumed that already.. I needed to hear that! 👍🏻 Seems like most people do it as a hobby, an expensive one, you need a float, money for the competitions, people to help and to travel a lot... I'm following some groups. But some stables seem to employ people to take care of their horses and train them, ride competitions too. But as an average rider it must be hard to get one of there rare job's I guess...

    Great video, I don’t know anything about endurance riding, obviously the rider has to be fit as well as the horse. Do you canter, trot, walk in a sequence, and do the riders get off and walk or jog with their horses. Just to give them a rest..

    What are your average speeds and recovery rates? Here in South Africa all are mounts are under 15,3 and arab-like.

    • @dawnchampion7709
      @dawnchampion7709 4 роки тому +3

      Average speeds are under 30mph. We can hit speeds of 26mph and still be operating in the green zone for hours. The fastest speed I've gone on him was 46mph, but that is in the red zone and we can't do that in an endurance race because it burns too much fuel. Recovery is within 5-15 minutes, depending on how I manage him. His strength is that he has a huge gait and power and can hold that for hours. The Arabians don't have the speed, but they can hold a steady, slower gait for even longer and have a faster recovery of 1-10 minutes. Lasair is competitive to 50 miles, but after that, I suspect the Arabians would pull ahead as he begins to tire. He uses up more fuel and therefore creates more waste while the Arabians seem to be like the Prius of the horse world - much more efficient fuel management.

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  5 років тому +1

      Not at all. You can do it in whatever (humane) tack you have. There are some people that do it in Western saddles. It's just that western saddles with horns are made to work cattle. They are heavy and cumbersome. In Endurance, you'll be riding for 50+ miles and you might want to/need to take off your saddle at vet checks. A lightweight saddle is better for that and the comfort of your horse. You can absolutely participate in the Intro (10-15 mile rides) or Limited Distance (

And I was still a new rider. Thank God I had enough to get off my horse. Thankfully I was able to control him with one hand and I was able to fire off a few round with out horse going crazy.
