How about reliability? 3 years ago, our business bought four of the XPS 15" and they are all dead now. As per my experience, the power supply on the main board and the power adapters are their weakness points. They failed prematurely.
I’ve just ordered one here in Colombia because the XPS 17 isn’t on sale here. Funnily enough... the i9 version with 32GB ram and 250gb SSD is over £1K cheaper here than in the UK (where I’m from). It’s the same price as the XPS 17! 🤷🏻♂️
I like these videos. Will you consider doing one on camera equipment? I always wondered how you get smooth video, especially in cabin when the cars are moving.
Great video!! Would love to see results on a before and after color calibration test on the production 5750. The OOB calibration on the XPS 15 7950 left a lot to be desired, especially in regards to brightness and I'm hoping the 5750 is much better with an updated panel.
Great review. You mentioned that you used a higher capacity power supply. Did you face battery drain when you used the 5750? One of the QC issues being reported by XPS buyers so just curious.
Hey I just got mine as yours !! But what I notice is that the temperature is going higher than 65 degrees while editing or performing high intensive tasks . Is it okay ?
Savage, do you have Dell contacts that could tell you if they are ever going to re-release the gaming 700 series as a classic buy? I've often wondered about that because they did it once before years ago. I used to rebuild those but all the parts are hard to come by these days.
The size of the Precision 17 is almost identical to the macbook pro 16 in the side by side comparison, now all we need is a 3:2 apsect ratio and it would even become smaller.
I'd expect more. My modestly optioned Precision from 8+ years ago had a base price in the high 3K range. Amen for the Outlet if you can find a unit on the shelf that meets your needs...
What about a comparison of the precision/xps vs the Lenovo Extreme X1? Both mobile workstations and I'm finding it difficult to decide between the two.
How come you had Quadro rtx 5000 in this? Currently the only reason I am contemplating buying this machine is the max choice on the website is RTX 3000.
I wonder if the new vapor chamber keeps it from boiling while charging. I'm looking for a replacement for my XPS 15 because I can't use it as a desktop replacement under load on AC.
Mr. Goose, you devote some time to testing the audio systems in vechiles, how about testing speakers or headphones for tech wednesdays? Maybe even in that 100-300$ price range for headphones that is.
The problem with DELL/HP etc, once it is out of warranty and MOBO or other component is out, you're pretty much either buy new PC or must search exactly same part. But if you put your PC together yourself, you can replace your part with a compatible one, even if it is different manufacturer.
Agreed. However, in the case of the laptop world, when I get a Precision I always get a 4-5 year warranty by then for at least what I do its already lived a hard life and new gen hardware is worth an upgrade.
@@savagegeese Yes. Laptop is a different beast. The one on which I type this message is 8 years old and works like a champ because it was custom built by manufacturer to pro specs. On another note - love your car vids. You do car inspection and evaluation in exactly same manner as I do during purchase. To me, yea, this is important, things like, dual injection or only DI, etc.
I’d like to know how the precision series computers stack up to Alienware. I know there are big differences in terms of having Xeon processors and ECC memory, but in terms of actual performance they seem comparable
The Precisions are not purpose built gaming laptops. The 7740/7750 with RTX5000 can do it but drivers are different and so is cooling. If I was into pure gaming Id have to use a desktop.
@@savagegeese That's true, but I was considering the other way around. How good would an Alienware be at the things Precision machines do even though they both have different aims. See if there a machine to do it all
Hi good video, I am really concerned with the 4k touch glossy screen. The 7750 specs for a 4k matte screen model show a base weight of 6.6 pounds so when compared to the 5750 weight of about 5.6 pounds (with 4k touch ) it is only about a pound heavier and 1/4" thicker. 1 inch wider, and 1/2" deeper. It appears the 7750 with all the options is the better choice since not carrying around like a student would. Can you possible get your hands on the 7750 (4k matte) and do a comparison?
I have the same concern with the new 5750. I have a 7740 with the 4K matte screen and it is not shiny at all and is very easy on the eyes. It can also be made very bright. With one SSD and the Quadro RTX 5000 it weighs in at 7 lbs, 10 oz. The power brick alone is 1 lb, 10 oz. It is not a lightweight machine.
Excellent review sir thank you...same precision ;) and quality as your car reviews. I do really enjoy the tech talk...my recommendation for a next review would be to compare an XPS 13 type laptop to an equivalent Alienware which Dell also owns. Keep up the great work!
Night and day difference.. XPS 13 is designed for on-the-go users. Super light weight but doesn’t have dedicated GPU power under the hood. Alienware or Precision will outperform the XPS 13 simply due to technical/engineered configuration options. So ask yourself what type of user that you are? Creative or gamer.. review Precision or AW. Standard productivity & general internet browsing in a very small light package than opt for XPS 13. #iwork4dell
If you are talking about chassis design wise, the seam between the top case (carbon fiber) and bottom case (aluminum) looks bad to me. That seam introduce a lot of potential manufacturing error like not sitting flush or slight separation. If you look at the side profile, there are 3 visible splits: Display assembly, Display assembly and main case, main case top and bottom. I know those little details will not bother anyone at all. On a personal note, it bothers me to see the gap between carbon fiber top case and aluminum bottom case (pause at 6:26).
Its because it needs to be user servicable, like other precision products these are not supposed to be sealed units. Its the trade off in aesthetics vs usability.
savagegeese The Macbook pro and Dell XPS open up the same way: Bottom screws and bottom shell/lid. Imagine if both were being service, you would flip the devices over and open from bottom. Ideally, most FRU components are mounted right on the surface of motherboard. In this case, service are being done the same way so that excuse for not having a unibody should not be a thing. Plus, motherboard is mounted to top case anyway. The only plausible thing is design choices. Dell want that soft texture on the carbon fiber that why main body has to be 2 separate pieces instead of a unibody and a lid. This is a trade off that, in my opinion, can cause quality control issue.
How does this compare to the XPS 17"? Can an engineering student comfortably use the XPS 17" with the RTX 2060 without any issues or the Precision 5750, is a must buy?
You could get by with the XPS17 however the 5750 makes more sense for engineering if you are using design software. The Quadro drivers are better catered to that environement. Also you get the business support on the Precision that you dont get on XPS.
@@savagegeese Mmmmmm...😯😯😯😕😕😕 Tempting BUT I dread my account bleeding. Is there any chance the XPS 17 could handle those tasks for at least 3yrs in college or there isn't any chance at all even with the RTX 2060? Please remember focus is on a STUDENT, not a professional yet!😞😞😕😕😊😊😎😎
Does the Dell Precision 5750 come with a Dual USB-C AC Adapter like in your video around the 5 min mark? There has been complaints now the Precision 5750 does not draw the power needed at 130w to keep the laptop charged but I wanted to confirm with you if this is an issue or not? It looks like you have a dual USB-C charger for your review. Does it ship with that AC Adapter?
No, that dual plug adaptor looks like it's from a Dell WD19DC Thunderbolt dock that is designed to for the more power-hungry Precision 7000 series laptops - I believe it delivers 180W to the 7000 laptops through the 2 USB-C ports. The standard 5750 adaptor only has a single plug delivering 130W. However I noticed in some parts of the video that only one of the 2 plugs was lit up (and in other parts one plug was hanging down) so I am guessing the 5750 is only capable of drawing power from the one plug - so 130W only. Is that right Mark? If I'm right what a shame as that might have been a good way to deliver more power to the laptop in full CPU & GPU usage scenarios.
What was the higher wattage dock you used for the precision? I just recently got my XPS 17 and noticed some battery drain even when plugged in and wouldn’t mind having it docked and/or using 2 USB-C ports for charging if that means more power and no battery drain. Also is there a USB-C charger that has that same capability? (2 ports higher wattage charging without needing a docking station) I don’t mind using up another port for charging if that means no battery drain. I’m far from a tech expert so this might be a dumb question but I was just curious as the slight battery drain I did experience was disappointing
Yeah not sure who doesn’t print, scan, use Ethernet ever, or any peripherals. I get the move toward smaller form factors but I have to get a more powerful dock. Also, not sure why there’s such a disparity between most Win laptops vs MBP. This was a great no bs review. I’m thinking about this as a solution for middle of the road virtualization lab work.
Wait so did you say that the dell optimizer software is somewhat accessible from the BIOS? Because later on you show windows software with "ai" features. Which one is it? Curious if Linux users could finally make use of this.
Hey, thank you from NZ for this ‘pre’-review. I’m looking to upgrade from a Precision 5510 (4K,32gb, Xeon 1505 v5) in the next 3-4 months... My old laptop still runs most things ok multi app in 4K (revit 2020, rhino 6/grasshopper, vray) I’ve loved being able to replace the keyboard myself for approx. US$35 after a coffee accident. 1. Can you still ‘carefully’ get to the internals in the 5750? 2. I noticed you powered it with a dual? USB-c (is that with the talk the 130w charger can’t keep up with heavy use?) Ps My 5510 has a 4.5mm barrel 130w- so might it usb-c? 3. Is it still a solid build? The 5750 is a lot thinner than my 5510. It has lasted nearly 5yrs in a bag on public transport/or mtb in to work/uni. so not knowing much of the 5540 can I hope for the same? It’s not that my 5510 is breaking, my eyes aren’t so good now so a 17” option that’s only slightly larger and heavier appeals to me. And workflows in Architecture are continuing to be more demanding with keeping up with new client expectations. I also can’t afford to be without a laptop so don’t want to push my 1st Gen 5000 series till it dies! Thanks for any advice, or who to speak to at Dell. D

It's glad to see Mark really knows his shit all around in the tech world
only in the thumbnail though. he clickbaited us.
The precision 5750 has been released, yet I do not see any option for an i9. Am I missing something?
why is it on the computer says : rtx quadro 5000
but on the spec sheet it will just have a quadro 3000 variant?
3:38
B Roll was shot using 7740. Same software however.
@@savagegeese so they are sending quadro 5000 for review but just will only sell quadro 3000?
Its Quadro 3000 only
Love these tech reviews. Keep them coming.
Thank you for posting the review about this machine, it was really helpful. Can you please do a review of Dell Precision Mobile Workstation 3551?
dude this is a such a beautiful review.. please continue with tech too.. no need to limit your content when the potential is there😊
I like these videos. Will you consider doing one on camera equipment? I always wondered how you get smooth video, especially in cabin when the cars are moving.
Yay, SG reviewing something I can barely afford over something I will never be able to afford in a million years.
Did you experience any heating and/or throttling issues?
Would Alienware m17 be a good alternative to XPS 17 for work ?
Great early review/preview! I’m curious where the price will land - thinking base $2.5k but could definitely be more.
Also love that you included the XPS 17. Really excited to see what Dell puts out this year - as someone with a XPS 9550
Mark that was great! But I didn’t understand many of the acronyms/or computer speak since I haven’t built or studied computer hardware for ages...lol.
I wonder if the new vapor chamber keeps it from boiling while charging. I'm looking for a replacement for my XPS 15 because I can't use it as a desktop replacement under load on AC.
Would be great to obtain a detailed video on how to swap a fusion drive on an iMac for an ssd
Do you think that ProSupport is worth it over "Basic" support?
Yes, if you are in US its level 2 techs here and minimal wait times.
What computer case with wheels is in your video 1:14 time line?
What kind of speakers/studio monitors are you running?
Woah, I was just working on my bidet too. Sometimes I walk into the bathroom and the seat cover goes up and I just sit on the heated seat and chill;)
I love how you can talk about power, chassis, body structure and cooling and not be referring to a car
Great video, you just made my laptop research much simpler.
I think everyone has something that truly disgusts them. Eating on the bidet was mine.🤢
LOL 😂
I’d like to know how the precision series computers stack up to Alienware. I know there are big differences in terms of having Xeon processors and ECC memory, but in terms of actual performance they seem comparable
The Precisions are not purpose built gaming laptops. The 7740/7750 with RTX5000 can do it but drivers are different and so is cooling. If I was into pure gaming Id have to use a desktop.
@@savagegeese That's true, but I was considering the other way around. How good would an Alienware be at the things Precision machines do even though they both have different aims. See if there a machine to do it all
@savagegeese thermal pipes are vapor chambers as well...
While that is partially correct, Vapor chambers in this design uses a plate and enclosure around the entire back plane
Are these machines good for music production?
Any thoughts on eGPU and its potential with this or other form factor laptops?
Hi good video, I am really concerned with the 4k touch glossy screen. The 7750 specs for a 4k matte screen model show a base weight of 6.6 pounds so when compared to
the 5750 weight of about 5.6 pounds (with 4k touch ) it is only about a pound heavier and 1/4" thicker.
#iwork4dell
Thank you for admitting this is not a replacement for a desktop but does a f**ckin good job.
Would love to see a video on your microphone and camera setup
@@savagegeese That is a bad excuse for engineering
savagegeese The Macbook pro and Dell XPS open up the same way: Bottom screws and bottom shell/lid.
Can you please tell me what are those fancy stands for your Presonus speakers and where to get them? Thank you.
Iso Acoustics, Aperta.
@@savagegeese Thanks!
Very good one! I'm working for Dell and this exactly would sum up what I think
Any ideas on pricing? Especially as tested
Pricing isnt set yet.
@@savagegeese Mmmmmm...😯😯😯😕😕😕
Tempting BUT I dread my account bleeding.
Switch to a Bluetooth mouse, no dongles or usb fobs for that, it's all built in the mouse and the laptop.
#latency when I am dominating in minecraft.
WD19DCS
Yeah not sure who doesn’t print, scan, use Ethernet ever, or any peripherals. I get the move toward smaller form factors but I have to get a more powerful dock. Also, not sure why there’s such a disparity between most Win laptops vs MBP. This was a great no bs review. I’m thinking about this as a solution for middle of the road virtualization lab work.
May I ask please what was the run in music to the review? I really like it!
Anyone know when this comes out
Love this review! btw, what monitor do you use? thanks!
Whats the battery life like?
Is that a Lian Li case you showed for desktops? Classy.
Yes
Excellent choice. Subtle, understated beauty. Details matter and Lian Li understands.
Wait so did you say that the dell optimizer software is somewhat accessible from the BIOS? Because later on you show windows software with "ai" features. Which one is it? Curious if Linux users could finally make use of this.
The new precision bios will allow it to be changed in bios seperate from OS.
@@savagegeese Awesome thank you!
I wish dell kept using the E-Port II docking port on new models
Shoutout to the Schitt Modi at 3:54
Cars and tech go well together - keep it up.
