GM - Rear Wheel Bearing / Hub Assembly
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he goes through the procedure of changing a rear hub assembly / wheel bearing on a 2005 Buick Lacrosse. This vehicle has an ABS speed sensor built into the hub but some however do not. This is a pretty standard procedure for many makes and models of GM vehicles.

I owned and operated my own garage for 10 years, recently sold it and I still watch SMA. My wife says why are you watching that, you already know that, I said you can always learn something. Great channel Eric.
Afirm, Every days a school day
Morning coffie, donut...and another episode of SMA - life is b-e-a-utiful :)
I hate hub assemblies and wheel bearings in general. One of the worst jobs you can do in the rust belt :/ Especially if you don't have strong impact tools available.
ice44567 I live in rust belt and I've always liked doing bearings and suspension stuff. Mostly because you gotta get violent. Fun times!
ice44567 don't forget a possibility of needing a torch
ice44567 I know how you feel.
It seems like you do quite a bit with GM vehicles. This Buick's design is very similar, if not exactly, like my 2008 Impala. Do you have a video doing a complete parking/E brake repair on these types of vehicles?
Edit: Actually, after watching the video, where was the parking brake? Usually, the parking brake shoe sits inside the rear rotor.
Screw in pistons aka actuated caliper...the parking brake is the caliper
Let's see: Loaded for bear - two antibiotics, four painkillers, lack of sleep, can only take hot or cold beverages, a week off from work, pain so bad that a broken foot suffered 12 years ago would be preferable - Tonsillitis, yep, but South Main makes it much more bearable and somehow puts a smile in my face.
Gosh I hope that is not true :/ Yikes!
Yep, it unfortunately true - In one 24 hour sequence, went to my Physician and the ER, the latter lancing the daylights out of the swollen tonsil. But South Main always give me an anticipation like opening a VERY large box of assorted chocolates and choosing and picking the piece and taking the first bite, knowing that is going to be good and never a disappointment.
Get those suckers taken out. As you get older, the bouts are hard on the heart. And they don't get any better.
Great work but I'll recommend one thing. Wear a mask with all that dust s***. Because you don't know what you're breathing in there. I'm 57 years old and I got a lung disease from breathing in dust from old Barns and pigeons and crap. And if only I wash my hands and wore a mask when I was a kid playing in my dad's barns and s*** I wouldn't have this disease now and I'd be healthy and a lot of strength and and doing mega work and making lots of money. And now every so often I suffer with breathing problems and high blood pressure from this lung disease that I have, and taking medication just to get by. So I highly recommend wearing a mask it only takes 2 seconds to put it on and it keeps most of that s*** out of your mouth and your lungs most important

Haha thanks Bill! We appreciate all of you that watch and support us!
New to your channel, awesome videos! I can't get over the number of hub bearings you have to change. I live in western Canada, it is rare to have a hub bearing go out...mind you, we don't near have the corrosion issues you guys do. I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 with 187500 miles, factory hub bearings. Anyway, again really enjoy your videos!
Great video as always Eric O pretty easy job @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Spray some brake clean on that hat 🐞 🍕
I like the saying "If I can do it you can do it" but the truth is I cant do it! The videos are awesome though. They make it so I can do more.
Well that's my next 16 minutes sorted then 👍🏼
"pulled out too soon" Eric O. 2017
Rather doubtful as he has three children.
@@satamanschmidt3428 that's why he doesn't have 4
After watching many of your videos I know one thing for absolute certain. I am sure glad I live in Texas where corrosion isn't a problem like it is up North, screw salted roads every damn year.
Very instructive and done at a pace that suits me. You are very meticulous which I find a rare quality nowadays. Keep it up.
This guy is good, but you should watch some of the Chris Fix videos, you also be amused....and learn a few tricks here and there....
Break Clean is magical liquid that deserves to be celebrated, which Eric "O" does!
How could anyone dislike this video? Perfectly straightforward and informative...what's not to like? Jeez.
Eric...PLEASE ...always wear your hearing protection whenever you use those air tools. AND wear a dust mask when working with grinders/sanders and around brakes. Believe me...you DON'T want to end up with Tinnitus or lung problems. I speak from experience...do it for Vanessa and the kids. Oh yeah...great video as usual!
Happens to some people, doesnt with others. My grandfather, died in his 50s. Hole in his heart (native american) and lungs were blackened with shop dust/paint etc.
A friend of mine decided to try out welding in his early 30s, he didnt wear a mask. 1 of his eyes are seeing blurry, permanently now. (He closed his eyes, turned his head to tack, light went through his closed eyelid, on the side facing the weld)
@@DarkLinkAD Your friend should visit the local "tech school" and tell his story to the new folks. Sorry for his loss.
@@DarkLinkAD Where's your example of the "doesn't" with others?
@@williamhoudersheldt7076 I think most of UA-cam has plenty of anecdotal evidence for those not affected.
Eric O... Best mechanic on UA-cam and he's cranking out a video almost every day.
Trying my best to keep the people happy
@@SouthMainAuto And doing a great job. Too bad I live so far away. (Western Canada) As a retired mechanic, I'd love to 'chew the fat' . I so respect your skills and attitude!
Awesome!!! Thanks a billion for making & posting!!!
Eric, i know this R&R of rear wheel bearing hub was from a while ago
but i wonder did you torq the mounting hub bearing bolts to spec? i may have missed that?
maybe your impact drive has an adjustable torq range??
Hey, Eric, I like your videos when you're diagnosing problems It helps me think of ways I can find problems.
Anybody can turn a wrench and replace parts that why we have so many parts changers.
"Test fitting", sure, me too 😏
Hahaha, when you were cookie wheeling that crap off the back of the rotor I know you were gonna say cadi-wompus!!!
Mr. O your videos have personally saved me over $100 when I watched how to replace the ignition switch on a Chevy Blazer.
I don't know what I like more, your liberal use of brake clean, or the sound effect when you show us the can.
Keep the great videos coming. I thoroughly enjoy each and every one.

If a wheel bearing dosnt just fall out when I take the bolts out, I use my pocket screw driver to pry it off....Anything more than that I get pissed down here. God bless texas and no rust for us!
Haha hit it with a q-tip and out itt comes, I see how it is!
South Main Auto Repair don't judge me! Haha
Good video, when the hub fell out I thought "this is going too easy, similar bad is coming" I've never tried rotating the bearing ask like that but that'll be normal now, thanks.
Excellent. Your one liners crack me up and make my wife wonder what I'm watching.
Right?! 🤣
Always better to pull out too soon as opposed to too late!😉
True story
We've got the President, Big Nasty, AND Wearever Gold in the comments section now! :D
Miracles never cease - a GM component designed with the tech in mind! Amazing!!
Boy, does Big Nasty make these jobs easy or what!?! Best invention EVER. :)
You should have a talk show. You are just entertaining to watch. Great video as always.
Good video Eric O , I have been watching your videos since you have been on You tube , and would like to say thank you. But the anticipation on your little red project car is killing me, when are we going to see some videos on it. And I know your a busy man with customers cars but was just wondering and keep up the good work brother, you would make a killing and love it down here in Tucson Arizona, no rust and things just fall off in your hands when unbolted. :)
I've been telling him what you just said for years. The Red Honda will give us some good videos but how about, as Prince would have said: a "Little Red Corvette. baby you're much too fast.
no welcome back in the beginning???? wtf? i know this is a continuation but thats like not hearing come on down on the price is right. i am suprised no one else said anything so i felt i must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hhaha awww I am sorry!
Mr O,and brake cleaner,on a Monday, the week is looking up!!!
More to come this week to and I think it gets even better!
WELL THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM LADY...………… "-) IT'S ON THE FLOOR...
Excellent! Can you show us how clean the inside surface where the new hub seats has to be next time? The outside surface can be seen pretty good, it's just the inside.
Just got the 216QL in from Amazon. Haven't had time to use it. "Big Nasty" will be here next week. 😱
Love this short and to the point video. On a side note, Mr O is only a few uploads away from 400 videos. Eric you should change the channel name to South Main Film Studios ! 😎
You are a video uploading machine! Another great one. Well done Eric!
No time to sleep Mike! The people are demanding their vidoes man so go get busy!
I am doing the same at the moment but there are nuts behind the bearing housing which are damaged by corrosion. Probably been on the car from the factory.
You do a wonderful job on your video and you have a good personality for it. When reinstalling the wheel bearing hub assembly would you see anything wrong with using high temp wheel bearing grease instead of Fluid film on the wheel bearing bracket? This would keep it from corroding and make it easy to remove the wheel bearing assembly in the future if needed. Thanks.
That music when that brake can shows up LOL
@SMA: On the Fluid Film, what brand is that? when can you use it and when NOT used? where did you get this Fluid Film? Why do you use this product and not other stuff (anti-seize, etc). Answers would help. Fixing lots of problem with my wheels, hubs, calipers, etc on a 2010 Jeep Wrangler
Well done Eric. I like the classic reach-around ratchet.
That job wasnt too bad, surprised it wasnt a total rust bucket. But Ive seen you work on worse rust piles of crap,I dont see how you back east Technitions, have the patients,to work on simple jobs, then breaking bolts and Rust.Im here in Vegas,I guess us Techs out here are spoiled.God bless guys like Eric O.Just Curious though what happens when a water pump calls for 1.3 hours and it takes you 4 hours removing broken bolts, who takes it in the shorts on that one,Customer or Tech,???,LOL
Eric I have a 2001 Olds Alero , replacing the rear hub and bearing assemble and not sure on the torque on the 4 x 13" bolts to hold the hub on.. thinking 65 ft-lb..
Just one question South Maine Auto. What is the exact torque spec for the wheel bearing bolts? And the caliper bracket? . But awsome video. Cheers :)
back in the 1970s, we would just put the brake drum on backwards, catching a few threads, and use that to act as a slide hammer to pop the bearing out......Common practice; maybe you could try that with the rotor ????
I HAD to look it up...
The definition of cattywampus, often spelled catawampus, is not lined up or not arranged correctly, or diagonally. An example of something cattywampus are the positions of the items on the top of a coffee table after a two year old has been playing with them and moving them around.
I pascribed, I mighta have put some neverending seize on that hub before combobulating it back on with my torsionally correct pewmatic thingy. Couldn't we sell a brake pad replacement job while we were in there? Thanks enjoyed your fix it movie
Great video Eric, yet you should be wearing a mask. You don't want to inhale that dust. Especially, if you work on cars frequently.
That damn Neverseize! I swear someone can open that on the other end of the shop and I will find it and get it all over the place. I will find that shit at home on the wife and kids days later!
Could have played some "ebony ivory" or "black or white" with them gloves!! Another great video thank you sir!
Hey dude, you should do a traveling road show like This Old House does. You could start by coming to Massachusetts and replacing the rear wheel bearings in my Silverado. I can't pay you much but there's a good ice cream place near me. You can have two scoops if you do both sides.
Eric when you were using the die grinders I thought you were a dentist for a minute.
Sure enjoy your explaining what your doing. Very informative and you talk like we are right there with you. Great Job as usual
Lol you made that look easy. Every days a school day, first time I’ve seen the air chisel used in this way..... cracking ( no pun intended ) many thanks
Never seize never seizes to amaze me :)
Good real world demonstration of the advantage of using it. An excellent test environment, the northeast....
Does anybody know where to buy good bearings. I tried ebay. Thought I got a good deal. These bearings make more noise and vibration than my really bad bearing. Some say Moog or Timken, but I have learned that these two now import from China.
At the 3:50 - 4:00 mark. One of the bolt heads snapped off on my SS Impala. Will a regular bolt extractor do the job being that it has to go through the whole in the hub (concerned it might not fit for extraction bit)? If not how else can I get this assembly off with a broken bolt. Thanks!
I like all of your repair videos, but why Sir , did you skip the removal of the emergency brake assembly parts, and the C-band, that is the hard part, ok.
Great Job! Very Professional and experienced 👏🏾 👌 keep up the good/great work bro😊
I just got my stubby. Never used one before. I use it exclusively except when I need something really snug (axle nut).
hey, south main got a problem with the 2010 jeep liberty sport confused about rear wheel bearing removal !! please Help
Should you put loctite on the caliper brackets in addition to torquing?
I LIKE BIG NASTY! Great way to loosen the hub assembly! And of course......"Torque To Spec!"
I didn't see myself in this video anywhere. Should I be concered? Is Eric cheating on me with a Launch?
This job was a pain for me. Just to find out I ordered the wrong wheel bearing. The front and rear bearings are different with abs. Live and learn I guess.
hi Eric you may just get your wish everything you buy will say USA thanks to Mr Trump.
eric i'm surprised nobody pick up on the one thing you didn't do..But i'll let them figure it out on there own ... not going to say .thanks for the vids bud
Is it possible to dismantle the hub assembly and check what bearing is in there and then with the old bearing go to specialized bearing shop and buy such bearing and then install the new bearing only?
This video helped me until I got to the realization that I had an e brake that way gonna give me a hard time. Got the job done but damn that e brake was annoying
If I don't have an air hammer is this something to attempt in the driveway? regular small sledge and chisel work
Could be an ad campaign. Eric O covered in never seize, captioned "Never Seize Never Leaves"
Funny informative.. THANK YOU!
Are you single haha.. jk thank you for the informative video your a big help
Hi Eric I use a hub buster style tool on Vauxhall cars here in the U.K. www.lasertools.co.uk/product/6660
You remind me of a friend I had growing up! Very cool to see... Thx!
do you really have no concern about the massive quantities of brake dust you breath in on the regular?
never seize is for coating your co-workers creeper frame so when he picks it up he gets a nice coating on his hand! lol
I love Regals. Ive got a 03 LS. It came with the grand touring package. Full leather, 16 in aluminum wheels, rear spoiler. Gonna drive it til it wont go no more.
It not really the upper intake manifold that leaks coolant. It's the lower intake manifold gaskets which used a nylon gasket carrier (which is dissolved by Dexcool) that causes the leak. Replace with either the Delco or Fel-Pro lower intake manifold gaskets which have an aluminum carrier design and those fix this problem. The plastic upper intake manifold of the original Series II design had problems with the EGR passage melting. That caused a leak as well. ATP makes a good replacement plastic upper intake manifold.
How many ft lb of torque on the nuts that holds the bearing/hub assembly
Would the rear hub bearing if it’s bad make the top of the tire push in and the bottom stick out ??
At 9:30 you put Loctite on the TORX bolts. Why not anti-seize instead?
"pulled out too soon" LOL! I've never had that problem.
cuando veas la casa de tu vecino arder pon tus barbas en remojo, creo que eric O esta tomando nota sobre lo que le esta pasando al canal de ericthecarguy
Hi Eric! Will this work for a 2004 Chevy Impala?
Great video Eric. Very informative. Thanks for sharing
Good if you have all those tools.
Not a diy job for the average citizen.
I know its completely off topic, but this guy sounds like Beetle guese
put the tire on lost..pull..I got one for you to do.. Chevy truck spring bolts.pm
Rainman ray and eric o are both doing the brake clean thadda sound lol good one eric i know things aren't as easy as in florida
FYI put wheel back on and pull on it or kick it or ? Or Whatever
big nassty takes toyota and nissan 2 piece passenger side front axles like ,ky jelly on it
I got a 04 alero gl, is it the same thing ? I'm change the hubs and struts???
Eric good morning, I don't want to nag you but could you show how to diagnose bearing noise and how you determine which bearing is faulty front , rear , right or left thx and have a great day. Keith
keith frisell I've been using a tool since the nineties when it came out and it's saved probably hundreds of hours pinpointing noises, Google "chassis ears", I've seen it now made by a bunch of manufacturers.
Nice bird song in the background!
u forgot what u where doing at 9:04. u were still wearing ur safety glasses....
WHY didn't you use a slide hammer axle puller on it???
this is making me think big nasty will give my ingrsall a run for their money.
Gm genuine wheel bearings hubs assembly better than aftermarket?
