Its great to see people who have been in this world longer than I have and makes me excited for how my collection may be when Im much older. Loved hearing you speak as well, it was some what comforting. I have subscribed (from san francisco)

      Thanks. The climate where you live is great for growing orchids and in the US you have lots of specialist nurseries, a much wider range of orchid sundries, and ofcourse, you have the huge benefit of masses of helpful information on the internet - which I didn't have when I was young. I hope you enjoy developing your orchid growing skills. Join an orchid society if there is one near you, try to visit orchid nurseries and visit other growers when the opportunity arises.

    Isn’t it lovely the way that so many hybrids will end up gathering in all of the best traits of their parents, or at least more good traits than bad ones? It’s truly incredible. It’s almost like there’s somebody sitting behind the scenes picking what traits should be passed on and which ones shouldn’t

      Thanks. I do try to include miniature orchids whenever possible because I know they are so popular. Regarding flowering, they are the same as any orchid. If you get the growing conditions just right and they are thriving most orchids flower freely of their own accord. But growing them really well isn't always easy. I have quite a few orchids that I just can't seem to grow well and ofcourse no flowers as a result.

      Hi, I’m testing a simple method which is having a container upside down with holes to hold humidity and it seems to do well. If you’re willing to try and check the plants regularly always choose the right specie for your conditions, for home generally intermediate. There’s a video on UA-cam if you search “Lepanthes container”, where you can see how to set it up

      I have one that is doing quite well (having lost one a long time ago). Really pretty little orchid with a lemon scent. Many of my orchids just stand still over winter but assuming it continues to do okay later in the year I'll include it in a future video.

      @HowardRice  Рік тому

      That's interesting. I've often wondered how successful they are. Which orchids have done well? A closely controlled environment is a big advantage. I love my greenhouse but conditions vary wildly with the weather and time of year.

      @@HowardRice About 3 months ago I added a Chiloschista parishii 'Kanchanaburi' and a Vanda denisoniana orange flower, which was a mistake as I meant to order one of the smaller Vanda’s! The Chiloschista parishii has extensive new root growth and has produced several leaves. I’ve also just added a Dendrobium jenkinsii. The EARTH has full climate control and continuous air circulation. If your ever near Norwich, I’d be happy to show you.

    Howard any tricks or ideas to encourage the Pleurothallis cypripedioides to bloom? I imported mine over two years ago and it’s grown into nice size plant. About twice as big as the specimen you have. It had flower spikes and still does they’re brown and I think dead but no flowers! 😭 I’ve tried cooler temps more light/less light because I thought maybe it was just too warm. My conditions aren’t very warm to begin with except in summer. I’m stumped. Thank youuuu!

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  5 місяців тому

      That's hard for me to answer. If it gows well that doesn't make a lot of sense. Do you have other pleurothallid type orchids that grow and flower well? This plant isn't very different. Is the humidity high enough? Mine is seldom less than about 70% and I mist the plant with rainwater most days. Could it be too much feed? Mine gets a dose at about 500 ms about once a week just the same as my other orchids. I you make a change to the growing environment you sometimes need to wait quite a while to see it it helps. Lastly some people are now calling it a Stelis.

    Amazing miniatures. I am thinking of growing mine in a terrarium. Im thinking of putting in a fan but everytime its on the humidity goes down. Do you think its alright? Im afraid it might compromise their growth.
    Do you have any book suggestions for pleurothallis and similar group for reading?

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  Рік тому

      Hi Wilmar, I don't have any experience growing in a terrrarium but I think most people who do have a fan to circulate the air. The trick is to have a timer so that the fan comes on in bursts the length or frequency of which can be adjusted.
      I do most of my research on the internet. Just do a google image search of say Pleurothallis and see where some of the results it take you.
      Hope that helps. Don't spend too much money on lots of plants untill you think you've got good growing environment. It all takes quite a lot of patience and care.

    Love your miniature! Usually a lot of Lepanthes likes a bit cool environment, though it depends. I just got my first two Lepanthes around two weeks ago and for now I have a new spike and a leaf coming from both plants so they seems to do well!
    Are there updates about the Dressleri?

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  Рік тому +1

      The Pleurothallis dressleri is fine but it has just been standing still over winter. The last flowers were sometime in late November. I'm hoping it will resume it's good progress once the warmer weather arrives. I'll do an update in a future video.

    • @Crypto2638
      @Crypto2638 Рік тому

      Hi Howard, I didn’t realize that it likes warmer conditions and I’m looking forward for the updates. I’m currently testing one Lepanthes inside a dome (basically an upside down container) with holes for ventilation and it seems to keep the humidity high, I have it nearby an humidifier as well. I was thinking that you might try it too so when the humidity in your greenhouse drops the container holds it, I spray the container daily. I understood that these genes doesn’t really like when the humidity drops.
      Thank you for the updates ✌️

    What type of live moss do you use ?

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  Рік тому +1

      Hi Kelly. I usually remove a small amount of live moss from one of my existing orchids. Most orchids naturally develop moss if they are kept consistantly damp and sometimes they come with some live moss when you buy them. But if you haven't got any to start with you could search outside for a small growing species of moss. Some people say you shouldn't do this but I've done so. You need to be very careful not to bring in any pests or slug or snail eggs such as by flushing it inder a tap. Also, not all outdoor mosses thrive indoors so try different ones. Some grow perfectly well.

    Do you have a schoenorchis fragrans?

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  Рік тому

      Yes. I have two plants. They do ok and flower but they grow very slowly and are still not attractive plants. I also have scolopendria which I think is a much more attractive plant and it does better in my case. In both instances I'm careful to put them somewhere wher they can dry out quickly after watering.

      @@HowardRice That's great, I love the miniatures. I have one and it's not doing well here in Ohio. I'd love to see a video about those specifically and the care if you have the time, there's no good videos out there about them and their care. Thanks for your reply!
