  • Ever since he was a child, Teodor Glomnes Johansen dreamed of reaching the top of the world’s highest mountain-Mount Everest. At 22 years old, he set out to achieve that dream and thereby become Norway’s youngest climber to summit the “roof of the world.” But an avalanche mid-climb derailed those plans. Not one to give up easily, Johansen is determined to give it another try. Armed with an even stronger resolution, and his best friend alongside him, the adventurer sets off to take on the peak once more.

@Aaron Snow lul, we aren't in the 90s anymore bra. Now it's a freacking vacation target, young adults (still in their teens) climb it, because they got the cash to hire the "vacation crews".... Maybe you should stop living under a rock or are your outburst because you've climbed it yourself and doesn't want the trip to be labeled EZ?

everyone is commenting on how beautiful this story is because it left out the part about the 20 people who died at that base camp including 5 Sherpas. There is a lack of appreciation for what is going on at Everest. Sherpas are taken advantage of by the expedition companies and Nepal government is turning a blind eye. These people work by carrying people's luggage up the mountain, guiding people who have a lot of money but often very little mountaineering experience. People take bloody fold up dining room tables and portable mattresses... on an expedition to the top of the world people take a ridiculous amount of luxurious that are carried on the backs of Sherpas. These days the line of people going up the mountain looks like the line at disney land. Sherpas, the village people who live there, have little to no means of work but as guides on Everest. People say that Sherpas get paid to do it and they do it because they get something out of it too. But the companies exploit the fact that they have no other means of work and employ them to take novices and professionals alike, and their luggage, up the mountain. One of the Sherpas that died in the avalanche was the youngest that year and it was his first time on the mountain. The year before in 2014 there was another avalanche that killed 16 Sherpas.
The guy in this video is truly inspiring and takes huge bravery and strength. But in reality they are being taken up there by Sherpas. The Sherpas carry everything from their luggage to their oxygen tanks. Really it is the Sherpas who climb Mount Everest and the hundred of people who flock there every year could not even dream to reach the summit without them.

What you say is true about the Sherpas. The Sherpas are not forced to do this. After all what were they living on before all the trekking companies opened and hired them? Second, they can always go to the city and get work. No one is forcing the Sherpas to do this work. They are opportunistic just like everyone else who wants to make a buck.

"People take bloody fold up dining room tables and portable mattresses... " - It disgusts me that companies provide such service. I think it is ok to pay Sherpas for guidance and to a certain degree assistance, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with a company who has such extended, unnecessary means.
Can you provide a company who is kind of "fair-trade" to Sherpas?

I have seen many people confusing sherpas to mountain climbers. They are actually a ethnic group in Nepal. They lived in the Himalayan Region of Nepal so it made sense for them to take up mountain climbing as their job. And the skill of mountain climbing have been passed from generations to generations. So Sherpa is a last name not a adjective.
    I am from Nepal 😊

That was the deadliest avalanche in the history of Mount Everest. Simply terrifying. Such an unluck streak but also such a blessing that he survived both of the deadliest avalanches ever in the mountain (2014 and 2015). At least 22 people lost their lives on that avalanche. It was triggered by an earthquake that killed another 9,000 people around the country. Truly a sad day...

I often see comments and complaints from people that the videos are too short or there's not enough information, but we don't need thirty minute long detailed episodes to see the heart in something.
