Guys, as I explain in the video I was raking fast ON PURPOSE to have a TEDDING effect. Even raking very slow this still leaves lots of hay on the field and broken tines. The tines break because the rake was mangled by a previous owner and is no longer square on the frame, so any bump causes the teeth to jump and catch a bar (and break off).
That isn't what that rake is for. If you were on a tractor you would have been able to easily roll the wet on top without it blowing and wrapping up. Just something to think about.
@@This1LifeWeLive it leaves hay because it's not set right. I'm talking about being able to roll the hay on the ground not flipping it into to the air. Sometimes the job gets done faster by going slower.
Used bar rakes for years. Maybe replaced a dozen tines. Never pulled with a truck, used a tractor, kept speed down. Any older tractor that runs good can be very useful around your farm. Pull bale tubs, rake hay, a lot of smaller easy jobs. And, our old rake was a JD, but several years older.
Hello neighbor I understand what you were doing 👍 with the bar thing rake, I payed attention 😉 that wheel rake cleans up really good 😉👍✌ see u on the next video my bell is on...!
I have been running bar rakes for 50 years. New Idea, New Holland with front wheel, then back to New Holland without the front wheel. In dry alfalfa you just don't need the wheel running in the hay knocking off leaves. Not a fan of the rubber mounted teeth. Typically don't like to chop behind the rake, you run the risk of picking up rocks rolled into the windrow, and a broken off rake tine would be very bad, both on the chopper, and you sure don't want metal in the feed! On the last New Holland rake when it was new, we had it set up with 3 tines per set. 2 on normally, one on backwards. It really did a nice job, but there was no room for error. If the extra tooth got bent out of position at all, it would be hitting something in the basket. So over the years most of them have been taken off. Still does a nice job in most conditions. Never owned a wheel rake, always felt they put too much dirt into the hay. I often rake pretty fast, generally a high gear with the engine throttled waaay back. Have raked with the truck in a pinch, but didn't feel right, and you can't turn short enough.
I don't think I like the front wheel either, makes a pain to back up and put away (crazy heavy too). I've also opted to put some on backwards, and some slots could fit 3 but some only 1.
Suzanne, I think your old school implement just needs some TLC with blade sharpening (sharpening some when possible will get it done in time), protection from the rain and snow,; tightening loose things to specification and bearing bearings or worn parts, etc. It will work much better and quieter ....
That was a pretty comfortable ride! Tough work!! My yorky took years to get used to riding in a car, summer was easiest, as I would turn the AC on her and that worked great...well almost great, than the wife asked me why I ran the AC for the dog but she had to argue with me to roll the windows up and turn on the AC. Sounds like the next video will be... Interesting. Take care!
Farm girl nice to see you training all the farm hands 👍😊 it does require a little extra patience and lots of snacks looks like you did a great job with training and the hay looks like you have figured out the strong points and weak points of the equipment and when to use what piece 👍💪 very smart thanks for sharing the great video
I used a 4 bar rake most of my life and i never experienced the problems you have with it. Cleaned up the fields good. I can see where your wheel rake would be more efficient though. Never teddered it either. Raking was the most enjoyable part of baling 🤤
Have a JD rake like yours even older,no yellow paint still works well. I've pulled mine with a pickup handy that way. I refer to it as a side delivery rake.
I use a rotary rake. It does a beautiful job. It fluffs the crop so air can get at it to dry. One problem with the side rake is that it rolls crop up like twine. Thus it doesn't allow the air to get at it to dry the crop down. The issue with the v-rake is that it is ground driven. Which then picks up too much debris or ash and doesn't produce a clean crop. A rotary rake is the way to go.
I've heard lots of guys love their rotary rakes. WE considered getting one, but they are FAR more expensive out here, and the New Holland dealer said they work great with thick crops like straw or alfalfa, but not so much for thin hay crops :( Hence why we bought the wheel rake
@@This1LifeWeLive Rotary rakes work well in thin crops too. I grow mostly grass. I have also posted a few videos of the rotary rake on UA-cam. I agree they are a little spending. But if you get a chance to try one out, please do so
when used as a rake and raked slowly, it missed just as much hay (if not more). I was using it to have a tedding effect. No need to fully rake when I have a better quality rake.
Ok about the tedding effect, but I still say you are literally blowing the tines off at that speed. I've been farming over 50 years. That is the fastest I've ever seen a roll-bar rake run. Just saying LOL. Please don't be mad at me cuz I think you are really cool
Aaah the comfort of using vehicle instead of tractor while raking,, good dog training so she doesn't think she go to vet every time get in vehicle , : D word of caution your vehicle stopped in field could cause a field fire from catalytic converter on exhaust, be safe : D
Not sure if you noticed but while you were showing the rakes, 8.02 in the video. I could have sworn I saw a wasp nest. Be careful and continue with the great content :)
Two things, slow down with the bar rake. At the speed you were going you are doing damage to the rake as well as beating the leaves off the crop. The idea of those is to gently turn the crop over and windrow it, not act like a tedder and beat the crop up. The other is that it looks like you have it set too low. You want the teeth to almost touch the ground to miss less hay but not actually touch. When they touch it tends to rip the rubber and you lose teeth. Power wise a nice small tractor around 20-25 hp would pull that rake all day with no issues.
The teeth I showed to be 4in off the ground, so if anything it was set too high. the rubber teeth were getting knocked off because it's very mangled and not straight frame-wise, so the slightest bump causes the teeth to hit the bars. Yes I was for sure going too fast, but that was the idea was to use it like a teddar ;)
Yes!! That is a hornet's nest. I can't believe it went unnoticed. A painful lesson is going to be taught unless it is eliminated. Don't forget they will hibernate in that nest in the winter too.
Yes, I saw it when I greased it up before attaching it to the SUV. Far safer to scare all the wasps out in the safety of the SUV while pulling it than to try to knock it out before pulling it . . . by the time I kicked it out there were no wasps left.

Try leaving one side of the wheel rake up if you are just wanting to flip the hay over. Then you won't need both rakes and it will probably do a better job

I see you finally raked with the kicker wheel up and the wind rows look better... Now you need to just rake back and forth making long straight rows. The baler will work a lot better and make better bales... Oh! When using a rake don't "Paint' yourself into a corner. you will be lifting the rake to jump rows and make big clods of hay in the field.
I'm a visual learner, so often trying to explain a field course if hard for me to understand unless I watch someone else do it first. When I first started out, I'd get mad at older UA-cam Farmers for not showing their corners, as I had NO idea how to make one, lol
Not sure yet. That's our next topic of discussion . . . WE saw some great systems last year, so we are excited to re-vamp everything, but it's a matter of planning . . .
IT was an experiement. We don't use the rake since we bought the New Holland. I wanted something to give a bit of a tedding effect before the real raking.
That tine you found in the mow looked different. Still had bolt in it or did bolt break off? I couldn't believe you were raking at 25 mph! Poor Dog. Poor rake. :eaving half the hay behind.
It broke off the rubber. Theys how they come off. the bolts are strong so they stay behind on the rake. I was raking 10mph, but to ted the hay, not really rake it.
@@This1LifeWeLive OK then. My mistake. Was thinking metric. They are very stiff tines I thought you were raking. Fire risk is real as the Catalytic Convertor gets very hot. Hope you beat the weather.
That's a fantastic way to burn your car and hatfield to the ground, I had a friend who done this in a pickup truck got hay wrapped around the drive shaft and got next to the catiletic converter and burned truck, rake, bailer tractor and field up!!! There is a reason why you use tractors in the field, keep learning
@@This1LifeWeLive yeah good with the heavy gees its been crazy to get the hay to dry this fall, ,all you can do is keep flipping it. Wheel rakes seem to pick the grass up better..good luck..
That is to funny, 1st time i ever seen anyone rake hay with a Honda pilot. Only Suzanne would think of that.was this because you thought you were low on your Diesel supply?
I don,t know if the side by side clutch could handle a constant heavy load torque for extended Time like that.check your Pilot drivetrain to make sure no hay wrapped up any where, although hay was laying flat and low.Good job Suzanne you got er done!
Had one of those old jd.think nh better. Nh fluffs better. My ten wheel rake sitrix same as u got leaves nothing. Lock one wheel up if 1st real heavy. Ur just spoiled with that n h tractor air and tunes. Gess u had same with the car.lol. that old jd sure was maxed out.later in year only use one side for 2nd and 3rd depends on weather. Think one of those long tined big pto rakes best.but beyond my budget.
The tedder will work better than that rake . Run the tedder at low pto speed ,will not throw hay ever where and run the tractor at what speed you want by running in higher gear. Thank you for your videos. Are you still happily married hope very thing is fine.
AFter we were done, we had an old farmer pop in who happend to see us tedd a few months ago and told us how he ran his teddar to prduce nice fluffy rows. SO I think next year we will give it a shot!
Hay looks nice! I think them single wakes are nice only in prefect square fields, and waking really thick hay for single rows which that's why it calls a single wake..lol but for bubbling we hate it at least I do, always messing up your outside winows.. but what's nice about them single wakes, you can flip it upside down to dry to perfectly where the V wake at least that's what we call them, inerways they literally rotat the hay, back in to it's button side, so the it doesn't have a good chance to dry out unless you don't have a good enough breeze😉. Cute little doggy😍no she wasn't happy, she's like LET ME OUT OR I'LL THRWPU ALL OVER you NOW moma..Lol but she's cute. And it was hard to make out, if your kid a boy or girl with that much hair on his head..lmao 😂 other than that good video.
Going too fast with roller bar rake. Not made to pull with truck or car. Try pulling wheel rake with truck or car not lifting up see how well it takes around corners.
I know this is the last suggestion you need with all the outflow of money am sure that is involves in getting a farm up and running. But could you please buy a device to stop the wind noise it is very hard to hear you. I swear where ever in Michigan you live it must me have the most wind of any place in the US.
as explained in the video is ha always done this, and I used to rake the hay slowly when I was trying to rake it. This time I was usiing it as a teddar. I explain this at the end of the video.
I don't understand why you are losing so many tines on your bar rake. My dad used one for 20+ years and I don't remember ever losing one. The main danger is that one could puncture a tractor tire, which would ruin your whole day.
part of the issue is that it's not straight. previous owner at some point "ran it over" so the frame is pretty bent up. I tried fixing it a few years ago, but no luck. every bump causes the tines to whack the cross bars.

You need to get the sprung rake teeth .they last a lot longer.
Raking @ 50mph! Hahaha... 😁 😆 😅
That rake was never meant to pull that fast.
Love your vids :) 💕
Thank you!
Nicely done Suz, just need to slow it down a little..
The only thing the first raker is good for, is to hold a beehive. 🐝
Watch the exhaust raking like that
I see you finally raked with the kicker wheel up and the wind rows look better...
Hi 1st
You want to sell the Tedder?
Watch out there is a big bees nest there
Hiya Suzanne how have yall been will you get rid of the non effective machines and will yall do a sugar shack this year have a day love from TEXAS
Not sure yet. That's our next topic of discussion . . . WE saw some great systems last year, so we are excited to re-vamp everything, but it's a matter of planning . . .
Get another tractor go slower that takes gonna fly apart. Older tractor cheaper than your car plus it has a fixed rate of speed.
LOL,,,,that was exactly what i thought was going to happen when she went to the slo-mo shot of the rake ......
IT was an experiement. We don't use the rake since we bought the New Holland. I wanted something to give a bit of a tedding effect before the real raking.
I dont eat in the tractor and nobody rides with me. Love my peace and quiet.
I THINK YOU CAN ADD BAR 5 TO THAT JOHN DEERE RAKE THAT WOULD HELP
I don't think that is actually a Deere unit.
@@steveholton4130 YES THAT IS A JHON DEERE 640
@@steveholton4130 hard to tell, but it does have a deer serial number tag on it
@@This1LifeWeLive My mistake - there's no arguing with a serial number plate
💕
Poor dog! I would of gotten motion sickness going around in circles like that to. Yes I know I don't chase my tail.
I think i would have ran the Tedder over it the next day after mowing to kick up some green
Should rake with wheel rake with just one wing down, than double the next day..
I did th opposite, raked one wing up to flip it right before baling . .
Erik suggested it. I've tried the side by side and it's ROUGH going for 3 hours straight.
I don,t know if the side by side clutch could handle a constant heavy load torque for extended Time like that.check your Pilot drivetrain to make sure no hay wrapped up any where, although hay was laying flat and low.Good job Suzanne you got er done!
We love to rake in a real truck, not a tractor!
I'm not a pro but in my opinion you are going WAY TO FAST slow down where is the fire
Raking at 40mph with a SUV, yeah thats hard on the equipment. Maybe you should invest in another smaller tractor.
Or fix the Farmall. Too many people are just plain scared of tricycle wheelers.
That is the first time I have ever seen a Honda Pilot raking hay..................
Yes they are expensive (not sure why), we looked at them too before opting on the 10 wheel rake.
Wow that old rake it terrible lol
Hey there you little cutie Susie
Going too fast with roller bar rake. Not made to pull with truck or car. Try pulling wheel rake with truck or car not lifting up see how well it takes around corners.
I know this is the last suggestion you need with all the outflow of money am sure that is involves in getting a farm up and running. But could you please buy a device to stop the wind noise it is very hard to hear you. I swear where ever in Michigan you live it must me have the most wind of any place in the US.
well, I had one on my camera but the puppies chewd it off. I keep forgetting to put a new one on . . .
Your side by side would have worked better to pull the rake
I have done that before, but honestly 2 hrs driving the side by side is NOT fun, lol.
👋😆❤👍
way to fast for a rake no wonder the teeth are broke and it left hay
as explained in the video is ha always done this, and I used to rake the hay slowly when I was trying to rake it. This time I was usiing it as a teddar. I explain this at the end of the video.
You were raking to fast
The idea was to tedd it, not rake it. I wanted it to gain air.
Please use a dead cat on your microphone or tape a cotton ball. Can't hear you over the wind noise .
Wheel rakes blow for dry hay
