    Mr. Watts. A true sage. Disorder and Order are either pole of the same thing, varying only in degree. One must seek balance, whilst keeping the swing of the Pendulum in mind as well. All of existence is a Paradox of the highest order. It is all quite real, and yet as ephemeral as a dream.

      You shouldn't be good !!! YOU SHOULD BE A MONSTER BUT KNOW HOW TO CONTROL THAT IS THE KEY

    • @SolonOz
      @SolonOz Рік тому +32

      @Mike Howard, I disagree with the part where you said you shouldn't be good. Because in my opinion, being a monster only capable of doing bad things even when controlled, isn't something that I would want to be. And I think that what Jordan Peterson meant by being a monster and knowing how to control it is that you are aware of your capacity for evil but choose to restrain yourself from acting on it, acting only when absolutely necessary. And I think that exactly fits with what being a good person is, because you can't be a good person just because you don't know how to do evil, or that you are incapable of doing it, that's just you being naive and harmless. To be a good person is when you know you could hurt the other person but choose not to. An example of this is when a person criticizes you, you know you could punch him/her, but you choose to refrain to do so. This makes you a monster who is capable of doing bad things but knows how to control yourself. This also makes you a good person, because if for example there wasn't any law to restrict you and you could punch the person if you want to, and you didn't, that makes you a good person because you didn't want to hurt the other person just because of a meaningless critique. But it would be a different scenario when you're incapable of doing the evil in the first place, that just makes you incapable of doing so, not a good person, because you might want to hurt him but cannot because you're weak and incapable of doing so in the first place. It's like this, a person isn't good because he/she didn't murder, maybe he/she wanted to, but just can't because the law restricts him/her. [Edit] What makes a good person is that when he/she knows he/she can murder, but chooses not to, not because of the law or anything, but because he/she decided that it was not good and that it was evil. [end of edit]
      If you're still reading this, I appreciate you. I just really wanted to explain it and see if I understand it enough for me to be able to explain it. And If I am wrong, I would encourage you to correct me, because no human is perfect and I would love to correct my mistakes if I made one.

    "You don't control your thoughts. You don't control your feelings. There is no controller." ~ Alan Watts
    When you sit with your thoughts and realize BAM! There appears a thought. Bam! Another. And feelings arise with those thoughts.
    Yet you haven't chosen any of those things. We learn, yes. And everything has consequences. And we have preferences and values, and we have a conscience - there's no getting out of any of those things.
    But we don't choose. We don't choose our thoughts. We don't choose how things make us feel. Free will is an illusion. But not because we're under the thumb of someone else. But because choice doesn't exist. How would anything choose? By looking at a thing and seeing how it makes you feel. But you don't choose how you feel.
    How would you choose a thought? By seeing how it makes you feel. Even if you value pragmatism, it's because you know it consistently leads to outcomes that make you feel good and are good for others (which makes you feel good).
    Dive in to Alan Watts lectures, and look at your own mind. We don't choose. But we learn.

    Love me some Alan Watts. Anyone interested in this stuff should also read the Perrenial Philosophy by Aldous Huxley.
