Their first album perfectly describes the London I knew. I absolutely feel it in every bar. This song, every song, all the way down to and including ”Lions”.
"Lions" is such an atmospheric song. I will always remember when I first heard it because I had just broken up with a long-time girlfriend and that song was a comfort to me during that rough patch. And as a guitar player, I just had to get a Strat and a digital delay and figure out what Mark was doing to get all of those atmospheric and evocative sounds on that tune! And the band themselves are as good as gold. It's been over thirty years and I still haven't gotten over DS calling it quits! Come on, Mark, give us fans a break, will ya?!

1985 I saw a Dire Straits at red rocks In the mountains of Colorado Needless to say one of the best concerts I ever saw and I've seen over 300 Concerts
They opened a show at the Empire, Liverpool with this song in April 1978. Mark started it with the guitar intro (as per the album) and someone in the crowd shouted out prematurely counting the band in with "1,2,3,4." Mark had the showmanship to stop the band, ask the guy to count them in again and then come in as it starts in this video. What a band!

One of my favourite dire stratis song!
Dire Straits. Impeccable musicians. One of the all time greats. When they hit the scene I remember thinking, Ive been waiting to hear this sound for a long time.
Wow ! One of my all-time favorite DS songs. I wonder what Mark would say about his playing back then as compared to now. Clearly, the band was as tight as ever and were still honing their chops. Great video! Thanks for posting!
Apparently Mark doesn't much care for his early stuff and very rarely played it in later years. I still think their debut album was their most soulful and is my favourite because of that.
@@sureshot8399 Yes, I'd have to agree. Obviously I don't know him but having followed him for all these years and watching interviews etc, I somewhat have a feel for what type of guy he is. I would guess he would be pleasantly amused at his early stuff. We gotta remember back then he was hungry and probably just figured he had to play the game which surely paid off in the end !
I remember being at a Waylon Jennings concert in Cedar Falls, IA in 1978 and before Waylon took the stage this album and this song were playing on the UNI-Dome PA. My friends and me were all asking, “What is this?!!” First time ever hearing Dire Straits. Bought the album the next day. And what an album.
The first DS album got airplay on country radio stations, so entirely understandable.
They have just pure sound PERIOD. Love IT.
Love this early Dire straights era . Fantastic live too.
I especially love that this version is not lip-synced.
OGWT was famous for NOT using pre recorded tracks and lip synch vocals. More of an adult show than TOP.

Love the rawness of the sound.
That was fantastic!
Fantastic lead and fantastic rhythm section….this is absolute GOLD….
I look forward to this
This, quite simply, is what a band is supposed to sound like. Beautiful
The best band of the 20th century. AMEN

Unique playing style and vocals, so very cool.
