  • In my second list of four, I talk about the top ten best hit songs of 2016.
    Honourable Mentions:
'Close' by Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo
'Stressed Out' by twenty one pilots
'Never Forget You' by Zara Larsson & MNEK
'On My Mind' by Ellie Goulding
    'Here' by Alessia Cara
    'Dangerous Woman' by Ariana Grande
    'Perfect' by One Direction
(NOTE: so yeah, it looks like 'Here' made the Billboard year-end list in 2015 - my mistake for not catching that, so if I were to swap it out... well, I mentioned a song I had otherwise cut in my discussion of 'Dangerous Woman', that would probably go there instead)
    10. 'Humble And Kind' by Tim McGraw
    9. 'Sorry' by Beyonce
    8. 'Ride' by twenty one pilots
    7. 'Hymn For The Weekend' by Coldplay ft. Beyonce
    6. 'Broccoli' by D.R.A.M. ft. Lil Yachty
    5. 'Starboy' by The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk
    4. 'In The Night' by The Weeknd
    3. 'Into You' by Ariana Grande
    2. 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza' (SeeB Remix) by Mike Posner
    1. 'When We Were Young' by Adele

It's been interesting to see Ariana Grande mature into a better and better performer as she grows older. She has a long way to go, but it's refreshing to see a former Disney® princess develop into a credible pop star sans any serious baggage.

Lol you mean Nickelodeon star ;) And she wasn't even the star of the show. But I guess it helps when the point of the show is that they are students at a performing arts high school and have reason to sing on a regular basis lol

i listened so mucht to "when we were young" in the beginning of the year. It to me captured that passage of time until it is to late and the longing to live in the past, where you are carefree. I knew a friendship of 14 years would come to a sad ending, and was just constantly thinking back in the past while listening to this song. Thinking of simpler times where nothing horrific really happened to me and everything was going fine.

Into You was definitely one of the best of the year. Grande's songwriting fitted perfectly, and her vocals were on point.
I Took A Pill In Ibiza is the best house song of the year, with a chorus that's dark and alluring.
When We Were Young is one of the best written songs I've ever heard. Emotional.

HM1: Funny how the Jonas Brothers made the first Honorable and Dishonorable Mentions (I think this songs just OK)
HM2: This'd make the list proper for me. Prefer this one over their other singles this year.
HM3: This is also in my Top Ten.
HM4: There are parts to this I really like and parts I really don't.
    HM5: This is OK
HM6: This is my least favorite of Ari's Year End singles this year, but it's still pretty good.
HM7: Easily their most likable song, and probably my favorite.
    10. I don't love this, but it is really likable.
    9. Would've loved it if "Don't Hurt Yourself" or "6 Inch" charted instead. This is only OK for me.
    8. Honestly soured on me, largely thanks to overplay over the summer.
    7. I remember hating this song at first..... Now I really like it.
    6. D.R.A.M. is just so likable and fun.... shame that Lil Yachty's verse has just such a dud.
    5. Yeah, funny thing about this going to number 1...
    4. Great song, even though I think False Alarm had the much better video.
    3. Excellent pop song.
    2. This'd be my number 1. I don't think there was a song I enjoyed listening to more than this one.
    1. And this'd be my number 2, funny enough.

I wish When We Were Young was a song I liked as much as I appreciated and respected, but the song is still amazing and I totally get why it's your number 1. I am also glad I am not the only one who liked On My Mind, Ride, and Dangerous Woman! My number 1 would have actually been your number 2, it was simply the song I listened to the most and I could not find a song I genuinely liked more!

I agree for the most part with your selections, and also concur with your reasonings! =)
Lil' Yachty's verse marred "Broccoli" to Honorable Mention status for me (it was just too much), and I would consider both "Hymn For The Weekend" and "Ride" Honorable Mentions too. But aside from that and some modest disagreements on placement as a whole, I like this.
Here's how mine would be arranged! =)
    *
1: "Humble and Kind": Tim McGraw (I choose this for the top spot because this made the most cathartic impact on me given the social climate, and I know I'm far from alone here. This is exactly the sort of mission statement our world desperately needs right now, and McGraw delivers so well.)
2: "I Took A Pill In Ibiza": Mike Posner
3: "When We Were Young": Adele
4: "In The Night": The Weeknd
    5: "Into You": Ariana Grande
6: "Starboy": The Weeknd (Featuring Daft Punk)
    7: "Hello": Adele
8: "This Is What You Came For": Calvin Harris (Featuring Rihanna): This ultimately greeted me with indifference, but this grew me quite a bit this year for reasons similar to how "Hymn For The Weekend" must have done for you. Yes: it is overly repetitive.................yet there is something of a hypnotic quality to the brevity of the lyrics and Rihanna's more understated croon that sounds intriguing.
9: "Side to Side": Ariana Grande (Featuring Nicki Minaj): Even with the reggae touch-ups being a blatant trend as of late, this is still a damn infectious song that's fun working out to. I'm convinced Ariana has a much better album in her and hasn't yet tapped into her full potential, but even if this is just a catchy sex song, it's a damn well-executed catchy sex song.
10: "Sorry": Beyonce: I just couldn't quite get into this like I did the vast majority of "LEMONADE". Still, I admire Beyonce doesn't hold back from spilling some more visceral emotions that are nuanced between ire at Jay-Z as well as sadness as she's turning away from him. It makes for a poignant, quality listen.
    *
    HONORABLE MENTIONS
"Cold Water": Major Lazer (Featuring Justin Bieber & MO): As a whole, Justin Bieber continues to annoy the hell out of me: with the top singles of the Year-End Hot 100 basically summing up why. But this collaboration actually is pretty enjoyable. The theme has been traversed to death surely, but I feel MO's final verse adds a little additional gravitas as brief as it is. The soundscape is fitting and bright, and Bieber actually sounds competent here. I like this.
"Hymn For The Weekend": Coldplay (Featuring Beyonce)
"Broccoli": D.R.A.M. (Featuring Lil' Yachty): Again, Lil' Yachty's inclusion is what contaminates this song. The Columbine and Hulk Hogan lines are inexcusable and leave too much of a sour taste in my mouth even when I completely agree with the rest of the praise toward the song. But yeah, my first impressions of D.R.A.M. are glowing too.
"Ride": twenty one pilots: twenty one pilots are one of those groups I seem to highly respect more than I actually like, in all honesty. I've never once questioned their effort, and I have nothing but praise for them for thoroughly approaching the concept of Blurryface and their choice themes and how they frame them in their songwriting. But musically..............I just find myself struggling to get into them still. Perhaps a bit too monochromatic? I can't quite explain why yet, but I personally would like to see them tap into that "Tear In My Heart" vein more as opposed to, y'know, "Heathens". Still, I respect this song and like it well enough.
"Never Forget You": Zara Larsson & MNEK

    My list:
HMs (I have a lot more than I thought I would):
    24k magic - Bruno Mars
    Starboy - The Weeknd
Let me love you - DJ snake ft. Justin Bieber
Send My Love (To Your New Lover) - Adele
Scars to Your Beautiful - Alessia Cara
Work From Home - Fifth Harmony ft. Ty Dolla Sign (Yes, I liked this song. I honestly think Work by Rihanna is so shitty it makes this song look like the Beatles compared to it)
    Wild Things - Alessia Cara
Gold - Kiarra (before I get hate comments, I'm only putting this on the list because of Kiarra's singing)
When We Were Young - Adele
    #10- Toothbrush - DNCE
#9- Sucka for Pain- Way too many artists to mention
#8- Adventure of a Lifetime- Coldplay
#7- Hymn for the Weekend - Coldplay
    #6- Roses- Chainsmokers ft. Rozes
    #5- Into You- Ariana Grande
#4- Stressed Out- Twenty One Pilots
    #3- Ride- Twenty One Pilots
#2- I Took a Pill in Ibiza- Mike Posner (Seeb Remix)
#1- 7 Years- Lukas Graham (Yes I Like This song. Stop Bitching)
Overall I disagree with most critics and music enthusiasts calling 2016 an awful year for hit music. I personally think that 2016 was more of a boring year for music; there was so much mediocrity and not enough really good or really bad songs. I personally found a lot of good songs in 2016, but compared to 2013, 2015, and even 2014, there wasn't any songs I actually loved that were hits this year. As for opinions I agree or disagree with spectrum pulse, I agree that alessia cara is better than daya, that hymn for the weekend grew on me, I took a Pill in Ibiza was obvious critic bait, and Starboy was a great bragging song. As for disagreements, I feel like Stressed out and Ride are great songs and certainly not the worst of the album, I felt like Work From Home was actually tolerable and better than Work by Rihanna, Gold has some good parts to it (mainly the vocals), and Close and I Will never Forget You were generic at best.

Yeah, Beyonce frustrated me also by not pushing an singles off of Lemonade but then it's less a matter of marketing than a matter of nonchalance. If you had been a Beyonce fan for some time, you'd know she decided long ago to distance herself from the charts. It was a very active and purposeful decision on her part to not get any hits from Lemonade. It's why all the songs from the album are still TIDAL exclusives and were only released to rhythmic radio and not top 40 and why she delayed releasing the videos on UA-cam. It's not that she can't get any hits(the various records she broke in Lemonade's first week of release prove that), it's that she doesn't want any. I take what I can get with her too. Also, sorry if this was lengthy. I just wanted to explain her strange marketing choices for you.

    • @elviskiarie1068
      @elviskiarie1068 7 років тому +1

She actually did say some time back that she's not looking for chart success anymore. It's why, since she released her Self-Titled album, she steered clear of radio and promotion in general and decided to just release music and tour which she's always said is her biggest aim. It's the only way to explain why she decided to release Formation for free for 3 whole months, not release it to radio and not make the video public because if she'd bothered to do any proper marketing channels for it, it would've easily gone to #1.

  • @crazyluigi6664

Alright, *_now_* I'm going to be talking about the songs on this sides of the board here! (Because, fuck it, I *_need_* some positivity around here to end this fucked up yet, especially with the losses of both George Michael & Carrie Fisher in mind!)
HM1: Yeah, I definitely enjoy this song quite a bit here. Granted, not as much as the next song coming up, but I definitely enjoy seeing it here in the honorable mentions.
HM2: Honestly, I kind of like the Rap Critic's interpretation of the song in question. Seriously, I find it _very relateable_ to not just myself, but also other people that might be in the situation at hand. I'd find it in my Top 10 (probably), and I honestly would be happy about that fact.
HM3: It's definitely a sweet little song. I wish it had a bit more success on its end, but I'm still glad to have it around all the same. :)
HM4: Honestly, I'm the same way here with you on this one. Even though it's not better than Don't by Ed Sheeran (at all), I still find myself liking it all the same.
HM5: This song definitely is fitting for an honorable mention, and nothing more than that. Although considering it's a 2015 charted song... too bad. :c
HM6: Eh, it's an alright song. Don't really feel the danger involved here, but I can understand why people enjoy it all the same.
Replacement #5 Honorable Mention: Eh, don't really care for it myself. I mean, I can also understand why you and other people can enjoy it, but for me, even with Fetty Wap involved, it's just there. Nothing more, nothing less.
HM7: Okay, you got me this time around, One Direction. Don't think it's Top 10 worthy, but certainly a fine song to end things here.
    Now it's time for real!
#10: I knew you'd put it on there! :D In all seriousness, I enjoy it for what it is. I think it's also at the right spot if he's going to be on the best of list this year.
#9: Yeah, it's definitely not the best song from her album. In fact, I didn't even list it as a part of the top half of my favorite songs off that album! Still, even if it's not her best from that album, it's definitely worthy of a Top 10 spot here.
#8: Honestly, I kind of figured it would be on this list. And honestly, I downright enjoy it a lot! The fact that it's being compared to Rude by Magic! of all things is more of an insult to Twenty One Pilots over anything else! That said, I think it's around the right spot as well. Maybe a bit higher, but even then, it's still a very enjoyable song in its own right.
#7: Honestly, I heard the SeeB remix, and if there was a version that deserved to chart, it was that one, because my God, that remix definitely knew what it was doing there! With that said, even if it's just the original instead, I can definitely understand why people can enjoy this song as well. It'd probably be at #9 or would stay right here myself if we're talking about the original version (the SeeB remix would actually make it higher up personally), but even then, that's not too bad for this song in question.
#6: Oh boy, here we go! This is honestly the first song that I don't really much like all that much, thanks to that strange mixture of the flute and bass drop for the beat and Lil Yachty's verse actually ruining the feel of the song a bit before it even had a chance to begin with his opening lines (seriously, how the fuck do you go from saying "Hey, little momma, would you like to be my sunshine?" to "Nigga, touch my gang, we gon turn this shit to Columbine!" without any build-up whatsoever in the opening lines alone?)! And yet, the piano combined with the catchiness of the flute segment and D.R.A.M.'s verse definitely helps save this song a bit from falling in my Worst Songs of 2016 list. Instead, it's in this weird mixture of being an honorable mention here and a dishonorable mention for the Worst Songs list, similar to what ToddInTheShadows thought about Nicki Minaj's Anaconda back in 2014 (even though his thought was actually wrong on that end, since that song is just plain awful altogether, regardless of whether Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back was sampled and he liked it or not).
#5: Heh, I knew this song would be on this list, and it's very well deserved! Combine The Weeknd's singing with Daft Punk's bits and pieces here, and it's definitely a golden track that's worthy of being on everyone's Best Hit Songs of 2016 list! If I had any complaints with it, though, it's that I would have like to see Daft Punk have a bit more influenced with the beat on this song then they actually had here. That said, I'm glad this is Daft Punk's first ever #1 song at long last, and considering how they got robbed during their Random Access Memories era by Robin Thicke of all people (alongside T.I. and, ironically enough, Pharrell Williams himself), I hope they have more to come soon afterwards. :)
#4: Weirdly enough, I never listened to this song to its entirety. That said, I'm glad to see it be on the end list this year, and while I do wish it charted longer than it did, I'm still glad to have it be one of the best out there! Not much I can say here, really, other than I should check it out for real.
#3: Interesting... I kind of thought it was going to be Side To Side with Nicki Minaj being featured myself. That said, I can get why you enjoy it so much to the point where it's here on this list!
#2: :D Now *this* would be my #1 pick for sure! Between the songwriting, the instrumentation, and the fact that it perfectly encapsulated what this year _especially_ felt like for me, it honestly is a great track, regardless of whether it's the SeeB remix or not! (And yes, I do mean that.)
#1: That's a fair choice for #1 here, but it's not really that for me (obviously). Personally, it's not among her absolute best (Fire In The Rain would be one of the best in that regard), but it's something that I can understand why you love it. Not much I can say here, if I'm being honest. Still, great list all the same! :D

Here's my thoughts on the songs that didn't make my list:
Close: I already mentioned this song a little bit when I was talking about Cake By The Ocean by DNCE but anyways I thought this song had decent production & Nick & Tove Lo had such great chemistry & their voices work well together too but it just got old for me pretty quick...so yeah it's decent but not the best
Stressed Out: gonna be honest here but I never really cared for this band whatsoever because I've heard a lot better bands than these guys BUT this song grew on me after numerous listens and they are not too bad I guess but their other 2 singles SUCKED tho I didn't mind the weird production and the vocals were ok but other than that it's just ok and nothing more..
Never Forget You: I like this song and it was SO close to making my honourable mentions for 2016 with the amazing EDM production, Zara's vocals were impressive and I thought MNEK was pretty good & the lyrics were decent too but I don't know there's something about this song that just doesn't work for me tho plus I thought Lush Life was WAY better as well and I kinda wished it was more successful on the hot 100 but oh well..it's a good song no doubt :)
On My Mind: tbh I love Ellie Goulding but this song is so forgettable to me like it's decent I guess but definitely not her best work and I love Something In The Way You Move WAY more than this plus if we are looking at controversies Don't by Ed Sheeran is a thousand times better than this...
Here: yes this was on the 2015 year-end but I'll give my thoughts on this anyway It's ok I guess the production is meh, Alessia Cara's voice is pretty good but it sounds like she's bored here in this song maybe it has to do with the theme of the song of how she doesn't want to be at this party or something but I don't know I wasn't into this song last year & I'm not into this song now plus I like her other two singles better than this...
All In My Head (Flex): you said this would be your honourable mention to replace "Here" so here's my thoughts on this song: it's definitely Fifth Harmony's best song yet with the reggae-inspired production with the added trap synths that makes it so fun to dance to & the girls all sounds pretty good in this song & Fetty Wap doesn't disappoint here as he has a pretty good intro at the beginning and has an excellent verse with his signature slurring-ish kind of voice and gives the song a bit more hype which is awesome and it was so close to making my honorable mentions too it'd definitely a sexy track :)
Sorry: I loved the Lemonade album but this is one of my least favorite songs on it I like the production it was ok, Beyonce sounds amazing as usual but I don't know the song is pretty forgettable but I love the rest of the album tho Freedom with Kendrick Lamar was definitely my fave on Lemonade :)
Ride: again never cared for this band and I thought this was the worst song I heard from these guys...The production was not great, the vocals were mediocre at best and ugh again it's forgettable...I don't hate this song but yet I just don't care it's pretty dull in my opinion
Hymn For The Weekend: I thought this was a decent song by Coldplay I liked the production, Chris Martin sounded pretty good and adding Beyonce for backing vocals was genius although I kinda wished they gave her a verse at least but oh well she probably don't need it anyway as she is one of the biggest pop and R&B stars on the planet that's been in the business since her days with Destiny's Child and only further proving it with Lemonade in 2016 so it doesn't bother me in the slightest anyways back to the song it's pretty good but not the best I've heard all year
Broccoli: I agree If Lil Yachty wasn't on this track rapping all those cringy flubbed lines about Columbine & that horrible Hulk Hogan reference yeah this would've made my honorable mentions in fact it almost did despite that honestly but I do love this track the production is so bouncy & fun and the added piano chords are just cute haha and DRAM's rapping is so goofy & hilarious sort of like Fetty Wap was with Trap Queen it's an honestly funny little track that can make you smile & laugh & have fun just ignore Lil Yachty that's all haha :P

I'm far from the type of person who just says all popular music sucks, but I'm not sure I could even name 10 songs on the Billboard year end list I really liked.

Hey Mark! If either Dark Necessities by RHCP or Ophelia by the Lumineers had charted in the Year End list, would you have at least give them an honorable mention?

Dark Necessities would have taken number one, I think. Don't remember what he thinks about Ophelia.

Hamze Ahmed juju was a lyrical masterpeice, every lyric carefully constructed to create an overarching theme of the corrupt government and the suppression of black people in our culture

This is the only best list I've seen that has on my mind, whereas most worst lists I've seen have this song lol.
