17 Things You Never Knew About 'Training Day'
With Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, and director Antoine Fuqua topping the box office charts last month with their "Magnificent Seven" remake, it's worth looking back at the first time these three strapped on their guns together: "Training Day."
Released 15 years ago this week (on October 5, 2001), the instant-classic crime drama offered a pioneering, still-relevant look at abusive policing, made a star of Eva Mendes, and won Washington his second Oscar for his atypical villainous role. Still, as many times as you've heard Denzel's Alonzo Harris boast, "King Kong ain't got sh** on me," there's plenty you may not know about the film. So make like Hawke's rookie Jake Hoyt and prepare to be educated. 1. The primary inspiration for "Training Day" was the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart corruption scandal of the 1990s. In fact, Washington chose to wear a goatee in order to resemble Rafael Pérez, an officer central to the scandal.
    2. Screenwriter David Ayer, who grew up in an area of Los Angeles affected by the scandal, put his personal knowledge into the story. "I spent a lot of time observing and talking with people who live and work in these areas," he said at the time of the movie's release. "I really wanted to get beneath the surface of what it's like to be a cop out here and how the community looks at them." 3. Fuqua (far right) was raised in a tough Pittsburgh neighborhood. Of power-abusing policemen like Alonzo, Fuqua said in 2014, "I grew up with that. I've seen that. I know that guy. That guy choked me out before. I was just a kid who was playing basketball and walking home with my friends."
As a result, Fuqua said, "I had a love-hate relationship with police officers as a kid. Whether it be color or just feeling powerless. That's why 'Training Day' was so appealing to me, because I had known some black officers who were worse, because they were part of the neighborhood, so they would manipulate that situation."
4.Tobey Maguire, Freddie Prinze Jr., Scott Speedman, Paul Walker, and Ryan Phillippe all auditioned for the role of Jake. Fuqua chose Hawke after seeing the "Reality Bites" star in a TV appearance. . For research, the two stars met with several undercover cops, gang leaders, and drug dealers. Hawke even went out on patrol. "I did a bunch of these drive-arounds to figure this whole thing out," he recalled.
    6. Fuqua's street background helped the production secure permission to film in some of the most notorious gang-controlled areas of Los Angeles, including the Imperial Courts housing project -- which had never allowed a movie shoot before. 7. Fuqua also put members of both the Crips and the Bloods in the movie as extras. Fuqua came to the project with a street credibility that uniquely prepared him for what was to come. "Antoine Fuqua might be the only director around who can move through Hollywood and the gritty streets of Watts or Rampart or Crenshaw with equal agility," producer Bobby Newmyer said during the production. "And that's what this movie required."
    8. "Training Day" features notable dramatic cameos from prominent musicians, including Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray. Fuqua praised the famously laid-back Snoop as a serious, disciplined actor. To play a thug's wife, Gray went undercover herself, wearing a wig and a gold tooth to mingle with neighborhood women. 9. Mendes had played tiny roles in half a dozen movies, but playing Sara, Alonzo's baby mama, turned out to be her big break. She was 27 when she played the love interest opposite 47-year-old Washington. They would work together again a couple years later in "Out of Time." 10. Washington has said he ad libbed the famous "King Kong" line.
    11. (Warning: This item contains a major spoiler.) Washington has said that the original screenplay ended with Alonzo escaping punishment for his crimes. Washington said he told Fuqua that the ending felt like a cop-out, and that Alonzo ought to die violently because "the wages of sin is death." Fuqua agreed and shot a bloodier, more cathartic ending.
    12. Hawke claimed to have predicted his co-star's Oscar win even before shooting started. "I said to my close friends when I got that job, 'If I do my job right, Denzel Washington will win the Academy Award for this,'" he said in 2014. "It's a Jason Kidd job. You're throwing the passes, and Denzel was making the shots." 13. Similarly, Fuqua claimed he predicted Hawke's nomination for Best Supporting Actor during production, while filming one of Alonzo and Jake's intense conversations in Alonzo's car. The director recalled telling Hawke, "You get this right, Ethan, and you're gonna get nominated for an Oscar."
    14. "Training Day" cost a reported $45 million to make. It earned back $77 million at the American box office and another $28 million abroad.
    15. A decade after the film's release, there were rumors that Warner Bros. was developing a direct-to-video sequel involving none of the principals behind the original "Training Day," though its script was supposedly written by Antwone Fisher, whose memoir famously became a Washington-directed movie in 2002.
    16. The second "Training Day" would supposedly have taken place years later, with a much older-and-wiser Jake mentoring a younger, African-American officer. The rumored project never came to fruition. 17. Nonetheless, there is going to be a small-screen follow-up. Fuqua is developing a "Training Day" TV series for CBS. In the show, an update set in the present day, the races are reversed, with the corrupt-but-effective older cop played by Bill Paxton and the idealistic rookie by Justin Cornwell. It's expected to debut mid-season in 2017.

Pérez and his partner Nino Durden shot and framed an unarmed gang member Javier Ovando. Ovando, who was left paralyzed, was sentenced to 23 years in prison based on the officers' false testimony.
On August 25, 1998, Pérez, then at age 31 and a nine-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, was arrested for stealing six pounds of cocaine from a department property room. (The theft was originally suspected to be an attempt at framing Frank Lyga in retaliation for the shooting of Pérez's friend, Kevin Gaines.)[5] The cocaine was estimated to be worth $800,000 on the street.[

By far the worst "loser" LAPD hired was Officer Rafael Pérez. A native of Puerto Rico who was raised in the streets of Philadelphia, he joined the Marine Corps after his high-school graduation in 1985. He joined the LAPD in 1989. Prior to this, he had been a reject and passed over for hiring by background investigators from several other departments in Southern California. He also looked and acted in a "gang like" manner.
On Aug. 25, 1998, Perez was arrested for stealing six pounds (or $800,000 worth) of cocaine from a department property room. Detectives say that when he was arrested, Pérez reportedly asked, "Is this about the bank robbery?" But Pérez would later deny that he had any knowledge of David Mack's bank robbery, and never testified against Mack. In addition to the six pounds of cocaine stolen, there were 11 additional instances of missing or suspicious cocaine transfers.
On Sept. 8, 1999, Los Angeles District Attorney Gil Garcetti and City Attorney James Hahn cut a deal with Perez to implicate 70 other officers in misconduct. For this deal, Pérez received a five-year prison sentence as well as immunity from further prosecution of misconduct short of murder.
Rafael "Ray" Perez's credibility at the time of this deal was "lower than a jail house snitch's flip flops." And his credibility has been severely undermined since then. He has since testified in several internal affairs investigations in which three officers, including LAPD Officer Brian Liddy, that were accused of crimes or misconduct were found not guilty or the alleged charges were dropped. During these investigations he has failed several lie-detector tests.
His sweet deal with the district attorney allowed him to get out of prison early, but he was arrested by investigators with the California Department of Motor Vehicles in June of 2005 after trying to obtain a license under the name of Ray Lopez. All he got was a few more months on federal probation.
    BAD COP MOVIE MANIA
Yes, there were a few "bad apples" involved in the Rampart CRASH scandal. The Hollywood elite would like America to believe that the corruption at Rampart was systemic and that all the cops were involved. That isn't true, and most of the misconduct alleged by Perez and his "gang-want-to-be" partners, was unfounded.
The true depiction of history has never been Hollywood's strong suit. The police are too often portrayed like our U.S. military, as corrupt trigger-happy racists. That's because that's what the clueless movie makers believe. I found this out while working as a technical adviser in a few Hollywood films. Whenever the police technical adviser tries to correct the director or writer's misconceptions, his opinion is usually trashed in favor of what looks good to them.
The real incidents uncovered by internal investigators in the Rampart CRASH scandal have been sensationalized in fictional exploitations such as the video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," and in television series and movies such as "The Shield," "Training Day," "Faster," and now "Rampart."
We don't need this kind of bad-cop Hollywood myth making. It's unjustified and creates distrust in the community and among our youth. We do have real corruption occurring, but not the kind movie makers like to depict. In a great majority of these cases, it's the honest whistle blowers in the law enforcement community who investigate and expose these anomalous incidents. And who in Hollywood would make a movie about these real heroes?

    • @hellspwanedperson
      @hellspwanedperson 8 років тому +1

i think some of it is systemic with the war on drugs and CIA involvement in contra cocaine trafficking, Reagan's tough on crime legislation and the prison industrial complex driven by special interest groups, lobbyists, and manipulative politicians. i agree that Hollywood is not a credible source of information, but on the other side of the token, the media does a good job of distracting us from what is really going on with political bias and emotional appeals corporate ownership, etc. this whole thing is a giant mess. so the skepticism and mistrust of authority is warranted, but we have to be careful and not fall of the deep end and support criminals. the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Rafael Antonio Pérez is a former Los Angeles Police Department C.R.A.S.H. officer and the central figure in the LAPD Rampart Scandal, shot and framed Javier Ovando, and stole and resold at least $800,000 of cocaine from LAPD evidence lockers.[1] He is accused of being a member of the Bloods, a notorious Los Angeles gang, and murdering rapper The Notorious B.I.G. at the behest of Suge Knight of Death Row Records.[2] When Pérez was finally arrested, he implicated 70 other Rampart Division officers in various forms of misconduct, ranging from bad shootings to consuming alcohol while on duty. At least 106 LAPD arrests were overturned based on Pérez's testimony.[3]
    Private Life
Rafael Antonio Pérez was born in Puerto Rico in 1967 and moved to Brooklyn in 1972; some months later he moved to Paterson, New Jersey and then he would eventually move to Philadelphia in 1985.
Pérez graduated from high school in 1985 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was hired by the LAPD after leaving the military in 1989.[4]
    Career
After serving on routine patrol duties, Pérez was transferred to a narcotics unit in 1992. In 1995 he was transferred to Rampart Division and assigned to CRASH, an anti-gang unit given a long leash by the LAPD. Pérez gained a reputation as a tough and effective officer, valued for his fluency in Spanish and his knowledge of L.A.'s gangs.
    Criminal activities
    Main article: Rampart Scandal
    See also: Javier Ovando
Pérez and his partner Nino Durden shot and framed an unarmed gang member Javier Ovando. Ovando, who was left paralyzed, was sentenced to 23 years in prison based on the officers' false testimony.
On August 25, 1998, Pérez, then at age 31 and a nine-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, was arrested for stealing six pounds of cocaine from a department property room. (The theft was originally suspected to be an attempt at framing Frank Lyga in retaliation for the shooting of Pérez's friend, Kevin Gaines.)[5] The cocaine was estimated to be worth $800,000 on the street.[4]
    Criminal charges
    February 2000
In February 2000, Pérez was sentenced to five years in prison for stealing 8 pounds of cocaine from an LAPD evidence locker. At his sentencing, Pérez read a statement in which he said, "I cheated on my wife. I cheated on my employer, and I cheated on all of you, the people of Los Angeles".
    July 24, 2001 release
On July 24, 2001, Pérez was released from prison and placed on parole.
    December 17, 2001 - Federal Charges
Pérez pled guilty to new charges resulting from the shooting of Javier Ovando. He was charged with conspiracy to violate Ovando's civil rights, and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He went on to serve 5 years in federal prison. He was released on July 2004 and placed on parole.
    October 31, 2006 felony count
On October 31, 2006, Pérez pleaded no contest to a felony count of perjury before the Torrance Superior Court.
Pérez, who legally changed his name to Ray Lopez, was arrested in July by Department of Motor Vehicles investigators while visiting his federal parole officer in Inglewood. Pérez pleaded no contest to lying in his application for a California driver's license on June 30, 2005.
Pérez was sentenced to an additional three years probation and 300 hours of community service.[6]
    Questions of Credibility
    See also: Brian Liddy
The credibility of Perez has been undermined by his testimony in several internal affairs investigations in which three officers, including Brian Liddy, accused of crimes or misconduct were found not guilty or the charges were dropped.[7][8] He has failed several lie-detector tests and has made several errors in his testimony in the past.[7] The issue of Perez's credibility has already led to at least 5 cases of either dropped charges or acquittal.[7][8]
Ongoing investigation into the murder of The Notorious B.I.G.
    See also: The Notorious B.I.G.
On April 16, 2007 relatives of rapper Christopher Wallace, who was known as The Notorious B.I.G., filed a wrongful death suit against the city of Los Angeles, former LAPD Officer Rafael Pérez and his partner former Officer Nino Durden, seeking unspecified general, compensatory and punitive monetary damages. The lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court by Wallace's mother, his widow Faith Evans, and his two children.
The lawsuit states that Pérez, Nino Durden, their partner former Officer David Mack, and "certain unknown persons" were responsible for the death of Christopher Wallace. The rapper was shot to death on March 9, 1997, as he and Sean Combs left the 11th Annual Soul Train Music Awards after-party held at the Petersen Automotive Museum on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The lawsuit states the killing was committed "in a very efficient, organized and professional manner, suggesting that a high degree of coordination and planning preceded his murder." It further states that Pérez admitted to the LAPD that he and David Mack "conspired to murder, and participated in the murder of Christopher Wallace." Both Pérez and Nino Durden were on duty during the night of March 9,.
Wallace's murder is believed to have been in retaliation for the murder of Tupac Shakur. Tupac Shakur was a member of Death Row Records, run by Marion "Suge" Knight. Knight is known to have hired off-duty Rampart cops for security such as Kevin Gaines, who was shot to death by fellow LAPD officer Frank Lyga on March 18, 1997. Knight, who grew up in Compton, is well known for his ties to the Bloods. Following his arrest, detectives found several photos of Rafael Pérez flashing Blood gang signs. The connection between Pérez and the murder of Christopher Wallace has long been a source of speculation by the LAPD.
The current wrongful death lawsuit states that Pérez was a member of "a violent street gang associated with Death Row Records,[2] and that he was partly responsible for Wallace's death."
    In popular culture
In the 2001 film Training Day, Denzel Washington said he emulated the style of Rafael Perez to give his character Alonzo a more authentic aspect. Also, the character's vehicle has the license plate ORP 967, which is said to stand for Officer Rafael Perez, born in 1967.[9][10]
The television series The Shield is based on the Los Angeles Rampart scandal, and the show's main character, Officer Vic Mackey, is based heavily on Rafael Perez.
Samuel L. Jackson's character in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Frank Tenpenny, is based on Rafael Perez.

LAPD Brass ‘Nervous’ About Planned ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Sequel - Biggie’s Murder Under New Scrutiny A planned sequel for box office hit, Straight Outta Compton, is already making waves behind the scenes at the LAPD. RadarOnline.com has learned that there are concerns the film will allege cops were somehow responsible for the unsolved murder of Notorious B.I.G., aka, Christopher Wallace.
Straight Outta Compton is a bona fide Hollywood hit, earning over $135 million, and a sequel, which will focus on Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur, is already in the works.
An LAPD insider told Radar that some at the department are concerned that Notorious B.I.G.’s murder, which was part of the East Coast/West Coast feud that also got Shakur killed, will be explored in the movie.
PHOTOS: The Most Infamous Cold Case Murders
“The upper brass of the LAPD always gets nervous about any projects related to Notorious because of the belief that former cops, Rafael Perez, David Mack, and Nino Durden, were somehow tied to the murders,” the source said.
Meanwhile, “The LAPD will publicly say that the Wallace investigation is still open, but the department has no active detectives working it, and it’s been assigned a cold case status,” the insider said. “There are cops within the department that want to actively work the case, but aren’t given access to the files.”
Several years after his death, Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, and his widow, Faith Evans, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the LAPD, former LAPD Officer Rafael Perez and his partner, Officer Nino Durden, alleging that the murder was committed in “in a very efficient, organized and professional manner, suggesting that a high degree of coordination and planning preceded his murder.”
PHOTOS: Bodyguards Gone Wild! Drugs, Murder, Assault & Other Crimes Committed By Hollywood’s Hired Muscle
The lawsuit also claimed that disgraced former Officer Perez, who was the central figure in one of the biggest scandals in the history of the LAPD, admitted to cops that he and former cop David Mack, “conspired to murder, and participated in the murder of Christopher Wallace.”
A law enforcement source previously told Radar, “The LAPD Robbery Homicide unit tasked with investigating Biggie’s murder knows exactly who fired the gun, and which people were involved in the planning.”
But according to the source, “There will never be an arrest made because it would rock the department to the core. There was a cover-up after the murder, which went all the way up the ranks of LAPD. This goes way beyond Mack and Perez.”

Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington in the film Training Day, is a portrayal of the corrupt Los Angeles Police Department officer Raphael Perez. Perez was the main culprit in the LAPD Rampart Scandal. Alonzo employs a Machiavellian philosophy in his policing duties. He is manipulative, power-hungry, and corrupt but he is not solely blameworthy for his behavior. The socio-political and organizational environment helped to make him this way. Alonzo is a results-oriented officer who has little respect for the bureaucratic process. Instead, he practices Street Justice. Through the passage of the 1994 Crime Control Bill and various other public policies, politicians have sent implicit messages to those in the criminal justice system to get the job done by any means necessary. This brief essay examines how Alonzo's behavior reflects that of the broader system and how he thrives in a contradictory environment that embraces noble principles and ignoble practices.
    INTRODUCTION
Set in the gritty inner city terrain of Los Angeles, the film Training Day (2001) features the Oscar-award winning performance of Denzel Washington. Washington plays the 13-year veteran Los Angeles Police Department narcotics cop Alonzo Harris. Ethan Hawke plays Harris’ idealistic rookie trainee Jake Hoyt. Hoyt’s attempt to fulfill a longtime dream of being a narcotics agent is mired in ongoing ethical dilemmas created by Harris. It is the cynicism and ruthlessness of Harris coupled with the idealism and innocence of Hoyt, which gives this film the rich foundations of a case study on ethical decision making. In the end, the fundamental questions are should law enforcement be allowed to employ a “by any means necessary” approach in providing public safety? Or should law enforcement abide by the Constitution and legal parameters even if it means risking public safety? With the advent of legislation such as the Patriot Act, the deconstruction of these questions is appropriate and timely.
After I first watched Training Day, I concluded that his character, Alonzo Harris, was the most corrupt and immoral person that I had seen in film. In my graduate level public policy course at Cal Poly Pomona, my Master’s in Public Administration students were assigned a critique of Training Day. I instructed this class to examine the character Alonzo Harris in Training Day in the context of Richard Stillman’s (1995) twelve ethical obligations of a public administrator. I wanted the students to rank Alonzo`s top three obligations and the three obligations that appeared to be least important to him. Students were also asked to define Alonzo’s concept of Street Justice. As all 21 students highlighted, Alonzo’s primary obligation was to “self.” However, the student’s ranking of Alonzo’s second and third obligations were the most insightful.

I'm sure you are aware that Vic Mackey is also based on Rafael Perez although his character is very different than Alonzo Harris except they both decided that short cuts through the red tape is best. Both are also greedy.
As for should cops use any means necessary to maintain public safety is a residing no. Other places fight to get freedom where as many people in the USA are fighting to give up there freedom in the name of public safety. Everyone assumes that it's the government that put cameras in people's homes in Orwells 1984. People put them in there. War on drugs is the government protecting us from drugs and people are content on that even though the war on drugs is waged against our own citizens. I don't think people will this country will appreciate freedom until we give it away. Where others fight with there life daily to get freedom. When it's gone people will appreciate it. Fighting crime could be easy on the other hand. Have less laws and you get less criminals than cops can fight real crime with allot less red tape.

At his sentencing, Pérez read a statement in which he said, "I cheated on my wife. I cheated on my employer, and I cheated on all of you, the people of Los Angeles Thanks venniey

He made a deal with investigators to cut his jail sentence shorter. He definitely should still be in jail. He framed an innocent man who was convicted for murder.

    • @Batman-qv2vz
      @Batman-qv2vz 7 років тому +1

Hey now.... Innocent man? He framed a gang banging drug dealing scum bag, not Johnny off the street with a 9/5 job and a wife and kid. Anyone he fucked with (prior to becoming a rat and making false claims against innocent fellow officers) was a scum bag gang member. Innocent... no fucking way.
