  • Back in the day, oxtail was specifically the tail of an ox. Today, it can be the tail of any cattle. What used to be considered a throwaway cut of meat is now one of the most expensive, ranging from $4 to $10 per pound. Chef and food blogger Leigh-Ann Martin introduces producer Doyinsola Oladipo to Jamaican Oxtail for the first time at Island Spice Grill food truck in NYC.

I brought my wife to Jamaica for our first anniversary last year. She's Ukrainian and never had oxtail before. I was happy to show her a bit of my little country. Took her to a little take out spot in Montego for a plate of oxtail, rice and peas, and steam veggies. I never seen anyone put away some oxtail so fast in my life😂.

I had my 1st dish of oxetail n it was such a delicacy! It was cooked in a gravy w/peppers, green olives, onions & a red broth! I legit every bit down to the bone! I make Ossa Buca w/lamb shank round bone in the middle & it reminded of that. But, the oxetail was more rich & fatty! So much amazing flavor & it just falls off the bone! I had steamed yuca w/a garlic sauce & cooked onions as a side, steamed veggies & side salad, as I’m on the Keto diet! It was prepared to order in a Cuban Restaurant that is absolutely fantastic! Everything u order there is piping hot & outstanding! It’s called, “Don Carlins” in Sunrise, FL! 5 star ⭐️ Restaurant! Highly recommend if u r ever in Broward County, FL! Yummy 😋! ❤❤

About 8 years ago my mom was coming from visiting her relatives abroad. I was making oxtail to surprise her. I've cooked it in the past but because of how expensive it costs, we only have it on a special occasion. Anywho, it was near perfect, just needed the gravy to reduce a little. I sat down in the couch and fell asleep. Smh. It burnt. Mannnnnnnn! Up to now I haven't cooked it again because of how much it hurt. It burnt so bad I had to throw away the pressure cooker. My mom has passed away two years ago but there was a spot that we would buy cooked oxtail and rice and peas from.

Some oxtail stew after you marinate it overnight in "green seasoning" (thymes, chives, garlic, chadon beni, pimentos, lime juice, salt, scotch bonnet pepper), then you do a brown sugar stew, cook it long and slow in a heavy cast-iron pot until it falling off the bone and the sauce is rich, thick and glossy and serve with coconut dumplings, plantains and callaloo.
