As a true football fan myself I feel sorry for San Diego and you as well. I hate when teams are displaced when they have a loyal fan base I'm a Buffalo Bills fan born and raised here in Buffalo New York. And there was many times where we had to worry that our team was going to leave Bon Jovi Donald Trump trying to take our team to Toronto there was a horrifying time here. Buffalo New York lives and dies by our sports teams I feel bad that you guys now are in Los Angeles with another team in the same stadium I truly am sorry. I miss the days where you guys were playing at Jack Murphy Stadium with the infield still in play in the awesome 90s uniforms Stan Humphries all that good stuff good luck to you my friend stay healthy and safe greetings from Buffalo New York
I was a manager at Denny's Pacific Beach. I added an extra server & brought in a small B&W TV into the office to watch the game. Charger fans had zero confidence before the game. When they pulled off the upset people were driving around PB hanging out of their cars yelling. It was awesome.
I was in my bedroom watching this game (parents weren't big sports fans) clearly remember the end and running around screaming, "YES, YES, YES!!!" I was 16 years old lived in N. County SD. We went to the Murph that night to greet them back from Pittsburgh. I'll never forget.
I remember watching that game with my brother. The gut wrenching ups and downs of those three hours were indescribable. Until his death in 2004, he and I often talked and laughed about how exciting it was to see the Chargers win that day. What a great memory!
Almost 30 years later and this game still hurts as the day I watched it. I'll never forget Ti. McKyer collapsing after the game in tears after getting burned on the Tony Martin td bomb in the last few minutes of the game.
Watched this game at work in San Diego. Tried to make it to the Q to welcome the team home and we could not get in. Place was packed and people were going crazy. Great memories!
oh man I remember that game.....partying at San Diegos O.G.sports bar at the time TUBA MANS bar in north park we celebrated like crazy went out side on university ave partied into the night the next day called into work(sears at UTC) sick then watched the morning news on KUSI and saw myself being interviewed..so did all my co-workers in the break room at sears......now with time gone these placing only exist in my memories...... chargers in San Diego ,Tuba mans bar and very soon Sears at UTC...gone but good memories
Rest in peace David Griggs, Rodney Culver, Doug Miller, Curtis Whitley, Chris Mims, Shawn Lee, Lewis Bush and Junior Seau. Sad the San Diego curse killed them in their untimely deaths.
I'm 48 years old now...I remember that loss more than any other game in all my years of watching the Steelers...walked out to my car & balled my eyes out after that game.
Even though the Steelers are not my favorite team, I definitely feel for you. They remember they had a great team that year, and were my personal choice to win the Super Bowl that season. They would have certainly given SF a run for their money if they played them in the SB. They dominated this game statistically, and I'm still at a loss why they came up short. Sports are so unscientific. There is a YT video of the entire game, and I'm planning to watch that soon.
Don Corell era was in the the mid 70s to early 80s, Bobby Ross was the head coach, learn ur teams history..And that's from a STEELER FAN!! FROM CALIFORNIA.
@Carr Rexx;Oddly enough it was the Steelers who made me a big Chargers fan!! I grew up in Detroit, rooting for the maligned Lions, led by Gary Danielson!! My brother tormented me by saying his beloved Steelers would KILL Danielson with a hard hit by Jack Lambert,Donnie Shell or Jack Ham!! On and on and ON,he would rant:NObody can ever come CLOSE to EVER beating the Steelers!! After a YEAR of this,I finally declared:O.k man,the very FIRST team I see to beat your Steelers will be MY team for LIFE!! Lo and behold:one Sunday, in 1979,we stayed home from church by faking sick, then switched from the CBS game to the NBC game to see the STEEL-curtain of the Steelers defense being SHREDDED 28-0 in the 4th quarter(en route to a 35-7 ROUT)by some team I had NEVER seen before with lightning-bolts on their jerseys and helmets, led by,a chubby, bearded quarterback who looked like Grizzly Adams, throwing touchdowns at WILL to a cool-looking dude with an afro, wearing goggles who caught four passes with ONE hand!! Been a Chargers fan ever SINCE!! Own a Dan Fouts throwback jersey that I CHERISH,along with one of Fred Dean,John Jefferson,Chuck Muncie,Wes Chandler and Louie Kelcher!!
@@SuperDetroit9 damn man. I am a diehard stillers fan, but have much respect for the old-school chargers. I remember the '81 team that lost the "freezer bowl" to cincy. Fouts, muncie, Winslow, joiner, Chandler and rolf benirshka. I named my fantasy team "air coryell" last year. I switched my logo every week to a different player or coach
I remember watching this one. I still can't believe the Chargers actually won. I didn't think they had a chance against the Steelers, especially in Pittsburgh. They were lucky to get past Miami the week before.
They beat Miami 22-21 after being down at the half 21-6. Miami missed a last-minute field goal which would have won the game, and the margin of victory was a safety!
big plays bookended the Charger SB run. Their season started with a Stanley Richard pick 6 before halftime at Denver in week 1 In this game.... 2 long TD’s
What a season if would have been if San Diego went all the way! In both playoff games (vs Miami & Pittsburgh): *The Chargers were heavy underdogs. *The Chargers trailed at halftime. *The Chargers scored two second-half TD's *The Charger held off a last-minute rally to win. In the Super Bowl: *The Chargers were heavy underdogs. *The Chargers trailed at halftime. *The Chargers scored two second-half TD's (but the 4th bullet point didn't happen. The 49ers offense just had too much firepower)
@@blobulous3500 the fuck? that's a loser mentality right there! you don't just go to the super bowl and getting raped like it's no big deal! you're there to compete, you're there to give it all you've got and lay it all on the line. typical chargers saying those stupid things. no wonder that franchise has gone to toilet shit and still is! lol
It's an all-time playoff upset. What people thought about the Steelers in Three Rivers and the Chargers being a totally underwhelming but tough team with big play capabilities...Huge upset. After getting stuffed at the goal line late in the first half, I would have bet all my video games as an 11-year old that the Chargers wouldn't win that day.
Chargers finally make it... Play the Greatest Most-Stacked Team EVER 49ers 😠 4yrs later Padres finally make it.. Play the greatest team ever 98' Yankees. 😠 BULL.
You wanna know why there are more injuries today then back then. Look at the size of the pads. Bigger pads absorbs all that energy. Smaller pads rattles the body.
Poor San Diego, their last joy of their only AFC champ win. They beat Pittsburgh only to face the hurricane of Steve Young, Jerry Rice and company a few weeks later.
Pittsburgh lost to the Chargers in the 1995 conference title game at three Rivers Stadium 🏟 Pittsburgh lost to Denver in the 1998 Conference title game at three Rivers Stadium 🏟 Pittsburgh lost to New England in the 2002 conference title game & 2005 conference title game in Heinz Field 🏟 4 home game losses for Bill Cowher
Absolutely not overconfident. It was just an unfortunate circumstance that the NFC had a complete dominance of whoever came to play in the AFC. As a redskins fan I wished this era had more competitive Super Bowls. The only ones we got between 18 and 32 were 23, 25, 30, and 31.
First, they weren't overconfident. Where did you get that? Any team would be humbled by a great team like the 49ers. They were huge underdogs, and they knew it. But they gave it their best shot. Second, the Chargers didn't get "completely slaughtered". They never gave up, scored 2 second-half touchdowns. That's more than Denver scored the entire game when they lost to SF 55-10. THAT was getting "completely slaughtered".
Steelers need to thank SC, for beating them in there own house. 😂 . If they had gone to Super Bowl and play against the 49,ers. San Francisco would have murdered the Steelers in Super Bowl.!!!!

Rodney Culver died in that air plane crash in Florida. There is a show called "air crash investigations" that shows what happen.

At least you have 2 super bowls wins in decades since after this defeat.
I have actually wiped my poopy butt with a terrible towel. It was my friends and ironically the towel gave me crabs. My prank totally backfired
I was 13 going on 14 that year. Unbelievable season. Too bad they are in LA now and they still suck. They have a curse.

Anyone notice the Division Round Scoreboard error of SF- 18 and CHI-35 when it was SF 35-18 really at 1:33 in background of JL Williams TD

Two 43 yards TDs and the Steelers got 86'd from going to the Super Bowl :-)
How many holding calls did Dawson have not called?
The idiot owner ran off Boss Ross to Detroit
Once San Francisco won the NFC championship game the Super Bowl in Miami I knew the 49ers were going to win it was over
Fourth & superbowl on the line oddonel drops back everybody into there patterns
Stan took a beating and keep on going
Too bad they don't football like this anymore

Is that Harry Kalas narrating?
Yes
Steelers were favored to win this game, Chargers defense was better and won the game
