Thurmond is one of my favourite places to watch trains. You got lucky to get that train coming down from Pax. I have been there a few times when nothing ran on the Pax spur and I have filmed a few running on it. Amtrak makes 3 round trips a week through there and stops at the Thurmond station
I don't agree with your assessment, having been a former Park Ranger myself, the National Park Service monitors water quality with periodic water testing to ensure things like what you are suggesting does not occur.
I caught a train in and out of here one time. Cool city. I met the "mayor" of the City (population 10, or less, I believe).
I think I heard or read that the population is now 3!
