Amtrak Picks Up Passengers At Second Least Used Stop In America. CSX, Thurmond West Virginia Trains!

- Amtrak Cardinal Stops At Thurmond, West Virginia. CSX Freight Train Goes Past Historic Train Station. Close Look At Track And Railroad Interchange. Includes Railroad Tower That Hobo Shoestring Climbed Last Year. These trains are in Thurmond, West Virginia on the CSX New River Sub.
The Amtrak Cardinal stopped at the station running a little more than a half hour late. Passengers can be seen boarding the train. We also have a westbound CSX freight train that followed behind Amtrak a short time later. The video includes a close look at the older rail that is still in use on the interchange track for RJ Corman and CSX. I rode down here with Scott 1960gambit. This video was actually going to be Part 2. Part 1 is longer and includes RJ Corman pulling a loaded coal train back up to Pax with 3 locomotives. That video will be posted soon but I had a problem with it. I had a setting on my camera wrong and the stabiliser was turned off.
This Amtrak stop used to be the one with the fewest riders on the entire Amtrak system. Another stop out west took the number one spot for that recently. The Amtrak Cardinal only makes 3 round trips a week through here on its run from New York City to Chicago. That only gives you 6 chances per week to see an Amtrak train pass through here and in the winter most of them are at night.
We were in Thurmond for 10 hours from noon until 10pm. It is about a 4 and a half hour drive. We saw 3 through freights, Amtrak and an RJ Corman train with 6 loads of coal. My other part of this video will be posted soon. Best frequencies for Thurmond are 160.230 for CSX, 452.9375 for End Of Train Device and 160.845 for RJ Corman Railroad.
Filmed Wednesday, May 30, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

I adore Thurmond WV... Looks beautiful and peaceful out there. Thanks for sharing another wonderful train spotting destination !!!
Is there a motel or hotel in Thurmond?
@@jackjules7552 After some research I see there are several hotels in the vicinity of Thurmond. Camping as well.
@@backalleyrailroading2835 Thank you for checking. I rode the Cardinal last year and when passing through Thurmond I remember thinking what a beautiful place this would be to stay for a couple of days.
@@jackjules7552 Totally agree. I would love to visit Thurmond as well !!!
Thurmond, is quite a small town, great to see some of those old buildings preserved, and have a active Amtrak station. I rode Amtrak to the Greenbrier, back when i was a kid and rode through Thurmond, good memories. Not surprising, your new furry friend seems to be very playful. Thanks JT
Very cool!😊
This little town fascinated me last year when you were there...and I'm still taken by it! Thanks for going back and showing it to us again!! Would love to see it in person someday.
I just posted Part 2 for this video today. It features a huge ethanol train with UP and CPKCS locomotives and includes an RJ Corman coal train going up the hill to Pax.
@@JawTooth Thank you for the Part 2 video! It's just as good as this one, and I can't tell any difference in your camera settings. Seems just fine to me!
Wow, you really get around! I love seeing all these places that i otherwise would be unlikely to ever see. Thanks.
Thans for watching ! I just posted Part 2 for this video today,
Neat old semaphore signals at the station.
Thurmond is a nice and cozy town. And very scenic. Puppy has such a sweet face. Just adorable❤Have a nice day 😊🌈
Thanks for watching!
I know the 10 Ton limit sign is for the cars but it's amusing to see it attached to a railroad bridge.😄
Thanks for today’s video in the ghost town. Always appreciated your videos. Enjoy the weekend and see you on the next, Brian! 🙂👍🇺🇸
Thanks for watching and have a great weekend also!
Thanks JT for taking me back to Thurmond, Great town nestled in the WVA Mountains with a coaling tower, post office, and that FANTASTIC freight station! Thanks brother❤
JT........you couldn't pick a better day to visit Thurmond,......wonderful views and work....particularly appreciate the information about the different rail manufacturers and technical info....!! PLEASE DO MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE!....don't forget the pets, seems like they getting along very well.....Kitty makes me laugh every time I see him....... Thanks for sharing........be safe!
thanks for watching! I have another video to post from Thurmond also. I used my other camera but I had it on a wrong setting and the video will be a little shaky. I can't believe I didn't check my settings but it will be up in a day or two. I'm still looking at it
Hey JT, you are an amazing guy I love watching your videos of trains in some of the nicest places on the planet great job 😊😊😊
Beautiful little town.
Thanks for watching!
Howdy JT! Very cool! Back in the late 1990's I rode Amtrak from Fostoria, Ohio to Chicago a couple times. Couldn't believe how smooth and quiet the ride was! Had to catch the train at around 3:00am... so part of me wanted to sleep and part of me wanted to enjoy the ride. Thanks for sharing 🤠
Thank you for filming Thurmond WV. depot. History is so important to document for future generations
You're welcome, I'm glad I could do that!
Have a great weekend my friend
That's a scenic area. I agree, that Thurmond depot is really neat looking. I would love to see it in person. Great video!
Thanks for watching!😊
That's one of my favorite spots. Very pleasant rural feel to it, punctuated by multi-thousand ton coal trains
Don't care for the coal trains...wish there were no need for them, with better jobs elsewhere.
What a great station building! So great to see Amtrak serving Thurmond and such rural areas.
I rode Amtrak through here a couple of times and it is really awesome!
@Jaw Tooth next time your in the area stop by the station Prince WV. There is a chessie cat in the floor of the waiting area.
Good Morning JT, great video, love all the information shared
Hearing the river under the bridge reminds me of visiting family in PA. The creeks on their property and rivers nearby. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Thanks for watching!
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo et très bon week-end ! ✨✨👍
I worked sleepers on 50/51 in both single level and Superliner equipment.
Love the locations you pick and that old semaphore signal. You get some great catches, Mr JT
Love that little Loki. Years ago I named my friends German Shepherd Loki.
Cool, thanks!
I hadn’t seen your videos in a while. What a cute puppy.
I was there a few years ago.
The lighting in this video with Am track pulling in was fun to watch!
Thank you!
why did you visit thurmond ?
@@BRIANDER100 it was there
Awesome video of Thurmond, WV. The depo looks like a motel. Boy those are old tracks it's good there going to replace them or it could cause a derailment and that won't be good for little town it would be wiped out. Nice to see amtrack picking up people there. Thanks again dad for the awesome videos.
Thanks for watchibg!
Great catch looking good my brother…hope all is well…miles of sunshine smiles…Reekashade.
You're doing your homework Mr. Tooth and enlightening us all. Renovations? Wonder if any rentals will be available? The smaller the town the better.
Thanks for watchibg!
Glad they will stop for me... wouldn't want to have to take a bus to get home... Don't think I could afford the taxi fare. Gracias por tu video, Señor Jaws. RT sends, Puebla, México...
That beautiful humming sound of the cars from the first CSX train
That was cool! Thats the welded rail for you
Fun Fact! There's an elevator in that station! Hard to Believe! 😂 Awesome Video JT! Keep Up the Great Work!
wow, I did not know that. I have been in there a few times and never saw it. I will look for it next time and put it in a video. Thanks for watching !
@@FabianDiazTrainsTrucksNCars Thanks Fabian! I will have another video that is longer from Thurmond. I will post it in a couple days or so. I had some problems with it and I am still looking at it.
Love the horn echo! Now, imagine that with steam.....
Thanks for watchibg!
Great one JT. Thurmond is a great location and you showed some pretty interesting things. Thanks.
My pleasure!!
Awesome video Jaw Tooth watching enjoying and enjoy the side show too again a awesome video JT 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😃😎♥️ and beautiful country too AWESOME VIDEO ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
I love your visits to Thurmond. Hopefully, someday there will be restaurants and retail in the strip of buildings. The dogs like the puppy and Vice, versa. Thanks, Jaw Tooth.
Not likely, in this day and age they probably wouldn't be allowed to have businesses in them even if they wanted to have them because of how close they are to the main.
Why would Amtrak build a new platform for a station for a train that very seldom stops there, it only stops there when passengers are getting on or off which are only about 10 or less passengers per month.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! I Saw 3 CSX Trains There Back In July.
Cool! You got lucky. I am going to go back soon and try to get a few coal trains there
Hi Jaw Tooth! Great video! Thurmond is a neat old place.
Howdy J.T. !!! that sure is a swell location!! 👀❤ . Thanks for the track lesson on the year made.... nice to know!. I will try some of your other films to watch as well. So Long for now . 6/3/23 🤠 Canada
Very nice video, greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Hello in Brazil!
The track noise at the end was interesting, as was the worn out railhead.
Thanks for watchibg!!
😊thanks for the nice movie Brian.greetz on the familie. enjoy the weekend everibody. greetz:🍐Peer.👍👍👍👍
The center looks more like an old Motel .
Very interesting video, brother. My kids are always excited when you drop a video.
❤ your train video! Beautiful area !!! Thanks 🙏🏼 for filming!!!
Thank you very much!
Great vid JT. Was just thinking that I miss the applause and laugh tracks.
I was on the Coast Starlight last summer going to Seattle. #171 was the power on it. Those units get around!
Such a special place.
Just such a quiet laid-back area and with shadows like that in a valley you better make the most time. Just think at the height of Summer tourist season more passengers could board than the town's population
The park rangers give tours of the town. They get small groups of ppl
Thanks for another great video JT, and enjoyed the track inspection, you make it so interesting.
Thanks!
Thank you, Jaw Tooth. I love Thurmond. It is at the top of my bucket list to take the Cardinal from Oxford, Ohio (whenever they finally build the station here), to Thurmond.
Has anything ever happened with the Cardinal stop at Oxford? Just wondering if that has happened yet
Some awesome catches as well as a great locations! Nice job!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I was there when they ran PM 1225 and Nickel Plate 765 on a double header several years ago. Was a great location to watch that
that would have been awesome! I was there last fall for the New River Train
This was a nice short video of trains that passed through Thurmond, West Virginia in the late afternoon of 30 May 2023, Jaw Tooth! I thought that I remember hearing that the reason that Amtrak's Cardinal passenger trains stop at Thurmond, West Virginia was to "kiss up" to Senator Richard Byrd for him to approve funding from the Federal Government for Amtrak. I am looking forward to your upcoming video on the trains that you saw at Thurmond, West Virginia earlier in the day.
Cool spot for rail fanning!
You Sir are getting a very nice TAN! I guess that time in Florida and being outside obtaining video - really works. Stay Safe!!
One of my most favorite spots to view and photo trains! 👍
Mine too!
Hey JawTooth great video
Interesting history
I love that place! Only saw RJ Corman but still had a good time!
It sure doesn't seem like it would be worth Amtrak's money to maintain a stop and station at Thurmond but it certainly is a beautiful area. Good catch JT. Love the pets! ❤😊
Amtrak will never get rid of this station
It doesn't cost Amtrak much if anything at all to maintain a "stop" here. The station is not staffed. The park service owns the building. Since the train goes by here anyhow, it is a "win-win" to take care of any passengers that may want to board or de-train here.
That is the value of public interest services. They should be recognized and appreciated more!
I really love this spot , Great 👍 vid , take care 🚂🚂🚂
Right near the busy NS crossing! Cool. I normally catch the Cardinal in Maysville. Last year my bro visited from India and we rode to Maysville form Newark NJ. Got delayed in Clifton Forge for 4 hours due to a broken knuckle on a freight!
Very nice!
I’m down here in Meridian, Mississippi. I like the videos of the trains running down the streets, the old B and O signals. I still think the old semaphore signals are the best and safest. In an emergency they fall by gravity to horizontal and everything stops
Thanks for watching!
Man that is a beautiful place
Nice stop great 👍 👌 trains Amtrak and csx 🚆 pulling tanker cars
Thurmond great location great to see activity there great video thanks Jaw tooth
Wow, that train station looks really similar to the ones here in Sweden. Very neat!
Thanks for watching!
Nice catch, JT! Nice to see that the town may be coming back!
Thanks for watching!
So cool that Amtrak makes a stop here.
That's an interesting little place. Great video btw. Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for watching !
Cool coaling tower! Great video Jaw Tooth!
Really enjoyed the look of the tracks and the depot and the history.
Thanks!
Hey Jaw Tooth, Thurmond, West Virginia is a very
interesting place and I've seen it on video many
times and it is very beautiful and great seeing
the Amtrak Train stopping there was great with
their passengers was also great glad to see the
area again here and another really great video
Thank You Jaw Tooth.
🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🇺🇲💨
thanks for watching! I will have another video from there in a day or two. I am working on it now and it will be longer
@@JawTooth
You are welcome and I hope you are having
a great weekend until your next video Thank You.🤠
When I was a kid, they had a small engine house there which they used for storage and the subdivision going to Glen Jean/Pax was still in use by Chessie and there was always activity as Thurmond was a small staging yard.
how many people in your class at school ?
@@BRIANDER100 I didn't live in Thurmond. I lived in Beckley.
Absolutely love Thurmond. Enjoyed it much, thanks!
thanks for watching!
Amazing videos Jaw Tooth keep up the good work
Love. The. Videos. There's. Nothing. Like. Jawtooth❤
Been thru there a few times on the Cardinal to Philly and NYC. Love that ride. Enjoy all your videos
AJ Lexington KY
thanks AJ! I use to live in Lexington on Waller Ave next to the crossing on the top floor
He have absolutely awesome video with trains 😊
I Love old small towns great video thank you so much for sharing
Thanks for visiting
Another great video, love the scenic old town. Haven't seen an Amtrak loco that was that dirty in a long time.
Thanks for watching !
Great video as always. Thanks for taking us along. Sorry I spilled a soda on the backseat!
Oh no!
Wow, three railroads run through? Including RJ Corman? I still haven't caught the RJ Corman train here in Spencerville Ohio, I had the opportunity on Thursday but I missed it, I'm hoping to catch it next next Thursday. I'm not really surprised that they run through there, they seem to run in small towns. This town seems nice to live in and quite peaceful.
thanks for watching!
@@JawTooth You're welcome :)
It sounds like Thurmond has fewer residents than the number of people on board Amtrak trains.
🤠👍 Ive heard there are only 4 fulltime residents in Thurmond .
Looks like they'll pull up the switch rail and lay the new rail on the ties. I'm sure there's an FRA defect in the split rail heads. Speaking of rail, the oldest rail I've seen is 1905 and still in use.
Great catches and nice video
Cute puppy!
Dude years ago when I was in the Army I rode on a greyhound that was stopping at mailboxes in Alabama 😀 longest bus trip
👍👍 Very Cool, Jaw Tooth. Thank You!!! ♥️♥️
Glad you like it!
Awesome video but wait there’s more 👍😎🇺🇸🚂👍
Yes, recall your video of coal train. It looks like the depot could have been a combo depot/RR hotel? If this was an old crew change point that is possible? The Corman branch, what was the former RR company? Maybe you mentioned it in previous video? And wait there is more! A train order semaphore signal? Or was it part of the ABS system. No, train order signal manually operated by the telegrapher that used to govern the junction switch. Historic artifact with the new Positive Train Control system.
Coal chute to refuel steam locos. Where was the water tank and mainline water cranes? This would sure be a cool location to model, because it is very compact with mainline and passenger traffic.
Plus the post office could load and unload rural route US Mail. Thurmond has everything a big RR town would have. 🤓
Only 2 trains? That's rare!
They really don't get many through there but I heard that CSX added two more for this line. I will return soon
Thurmond is my favorite place for horn echos!
not sure what i enjoy more trains or the pups!
hello jaw its is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy
Thanks Randy, my friend!
Great video Jaw Tooth!!
Nice Video
Good video Jawtooth
I've gotten off the train there before. It was dark out why we waited for our ride it was interesting to say the least someone was throwing rocks at us from the woods. We only rode the train for 2 stops
why did you get off the train at thurmond ?
@@BRIANDER100 we wanted to see the ghost town that was there. We only rode the amtrak for a short period. 2 stops before Thurmond we where dropped off. We rode from there to Thurmond and then explored the town while waiting for our ride
Enjoyed this video. Very scenic.
thanks for watching !
