  • After a lot of reports in the Local Thai Media & concerned individuals posting in my Facebook group regarding the safety of the beaches in Phuket I have decided to take a look and see if I can find any evidence of the current Jelly Fish problem that seems to be sweeping through Phuket.
    So let's find out if we can find any of the jellyfish around the beaches here in Phuket!!

    Just came back from Patong beach in March 2024. Spotted one jellyfish and got out of there! A few were washed up on shore.

    I was about 20cm from a box jellyfish at Kao khad look out last February, and yes in Australia blue bottle ect stings are treated with white vinegar and a credit card or something to scrape off the nettles and soaked in hot water to relieve the pain.. same same with box jellyfish and alike but straight to hospital for anti-venom ..

    • @philips4169
      @philips4169 5 місяців тому

      You NEVER scrape any type of stinger tentacles off! You lift them off the skin, and slow pour/drench area with vinegar, if no vinegar is available then pee on the area, yes hot water after is advised.
      Dragging an object like a credit card, scrubbing with sand, rubbing with a towel or anything else across the skin only serves to press more stinging barbs onto and into the skin to fire and cause more pain. I've been stung by many blueys in my life, and one box irukandjii in Qld ... I'm very fit but I nearly had a heart attack, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, passed out from the pain it was that bad.

    I was at Railay Beach yesterday in Krabi and there were tons of jellyfish, washed up on shore and in the water. On the 4 island tour we did today it was only a problem at one beach where I got stung snorkeling (Poda). But the swimming beach on Poda didn’t have any. Regardless the jellyfish are a way bigger deterrent than I had imagined when I booked my trip to Thailand

    I am surprised. I am living here and on Nai Yang as well as Nai Ton there were PLENTY. Hundreds! Those that arrived on the beach, maybe 20-30cm but if you further in the sea (like me on an e-foil) 40-50-60cm wide.

    That exact spot mate, yanui...if you kaya out towards the island (front left) youl see blankets of them. They wernt coming as close as the swimming area which im assuming was tide/current/winds related. Time was about 1pm

    We were at surin beach and banana beach lately and the water was full of jellyfish while on the beach nothing was seen from them washing ashore. Don’t know what you want to see at the beach looking just at the sand?
    Went to the water with my two kids before I knew. All three of us got the itiching pain from the little ones.
    Later I‘ve seen big pink ones while snorkeling and a lot of little round transparent ones.

    I was in 2013 Koh Samui in april-may, didnt hear or see anything about the box jellyfish. I was totally not aware of it. This year however i was in Koh Chang an at one beach they warned for what to do when stung by a Box jelly fish. It scared me so much that i didnt want to swim in the sea in Thailand anymore...although i didnt see anything in the sea, i only swom in the pools. It was a bit of a bummer, next time i will look for hotels -bungalows that have a jellyfish net in the sea. Hope the Thai people will put more safetely nets in the water on the coastline. Its such a pity that those beautiful waters are scary to swim in cause of this deadly animal.

    I'm in Phuket now Tony and I have been coming for 8 years on the trot. I have to agree I have never seen the roads as busy as this year. It's a nightmare on a motorbike on the roads now. I wouldn't even attempt to get anywhere by car at the moment. So I'm not sure where TAT get their tourist numbers from ?

    Enjoy your videos Tony and the insight they give us into Phuket. I have been coming to Thailand for 20 years and travelled most areas in Phuket. However, I have seen very little of the north east corner and east coast from Bandit Yit Beach moving down past the yacht marina. My question to you Tony is it worth having a look at this area?

    • @thailandtony
      @thailandtony  5 місяців тому +1

      It's an area im yet to explore myself which will be changing in the coming months.... I do try to show parts other tend to gloss over or not cover because they know people won't watch but my goal isn't views but to give a comprehensive view of the whole island not just Patong as many feature only because of the view count 👍

    Currently in bang Tao beach from 12:00 upwards it’s super annoying. Very little jelly fish but there is a lot of ‚sea love’ e.g. jellyfish plankton. It feels like tiny needle pinching your skin. It doesn’t even leave a mark or anything but makes swimming without rash guard unbearable.

      Nothing in the local media but that maybe because of sea conditions not being great low season Jellyfish are about but normally not many people go into the sea as its too rough 👍

    I was on Patong beach on 31/03/24 and there were hundreds of jellies all up the beach. I don't know how many there were in the water, but the beach and the water were all full of people.

      Yes, It seems this year Phuket has had a jellyfish problem normally there isn't the number we have seem and this according to the local media this has been blamed on the unusually hot weather we are seeing this year

  • @user-un6by4ox1j

    Honestly...I didnt even feel safe in a kayak and the only thing stopping what looked like a blanket of pink from heading into the swimming area with all the swimmers was the tide and winds. I wouldn't go swimming in anything other than crystal clear waters atm and ive lived here nearly 2 years.

    Hi Tony, thanks for your interesting vlog. I am writing from my bed. Today i swam 10 AM from Yanui Beach to Ko Man. I have been stung in 14 areas of my body. There are thousands of pink coloured jellyfish between Windmill Hill and Ko Man Please can someone identify what type they are? Some have a diameter of at least 30 cm Thank you

      @thailandtony  5 місяців тому +1

      I am sorry to hear of your experience & hope you are feeling better soon.... It sounds like you have been stung by Pelagia sp belonging to the Pelagiidae jellyfish family commonly known as the purple Stringer, there was a warning issued in Jan regarding this particular jellyfish.

    Jellyfish follow what they eat and the current in the sea also determines where they go, if the current is weak they can reach their places where they eat. Otherwise, if the current is strong, they follow the current, if the wind is weak, it does not affect the current as much. So many times the current can be opposite to the direction of the wind. There are tides in Phuket too you have to take into account.

    I think interviewing people to ask them about jellyfish makes more sense than just walking on the beach. It would be more credible if Tony would walk in the water and possibly interview people there.
    In March, I was in Kata. People were on the beach but not in the water. Going into the water, there were loads of smaller jellyfish. I also caught a purplish translucent one that weighed about 3/4 of a kilo using a net that I brought. Beware!!!

    Yes, white vingar do help used it many times as a openwater swimmer here in Phuket.
    Don't forget any kind of credit card to scape of the tentacles of the jellyfish away it's recommended to have a small plant water sprayer with white vingar in after it's the most effective way of doing this is have I do it.
    And I get stung a lot I did also get stung last week at Layan bea h not a dangerous jelly fish just red marks all iver the body even a week after the important is to not itch in it.
    Enjoy the beauty h no dangerous jellyfish around at the moment but they do sting

    As the sea temps get higher and higher with our warming planet the jellies will only increase. Warmer the water and currents the more they breed & spawn.

    • @michaelperrin7801
      @michaelperrin7801 3 місяці тому

      Well I suppose that's what you call a silver lining. Climate change will make the jellyfish happier and they'll be more of them. Bigger populations etc. I always thought the effects of climate change impact each species negatively, but you've corrected me on that. I suppose there will be a flow on effect. More jellyfish means more food for whatever eats them, and so whatever eats them will be happier too, and so on right up the food chain.

      I can confirm sunscreen does nothing. Stung on the face at Surin today. I had a thick layer of topical zinc sunscreen, which did nothing. Third day in a row being stung. Maybe I need to use the resort pool instead
