Dammit, SG's are growing on my(not literally of course) but I'm starting to like them. I'd take the green one even though I'm not a huge fan of chrome, it looks great on this particular guitar.
Great review, thank you Thanks for the side by side comparison with the Hendrix SG. I much preferred the Custom Shop Hendrix SG as the Gibson USA Kirk Douglas looked cheap, especially the way the headstocks compared. IMHO the rosewood board with celluloid inlays made the Kirk Douglas look like a Chibson viewed next to the Hendrix CS version. Still a nice guitar, just not for me.
You work at a guitar shop or something? What are your thoughts on the volume knob, man? Does it get in the way when picking? I mostly strum/pick where the middle pickup is located.
If you just ask a statistician, its a bit of a math problem: There are 6 single Pickup combinations. There are 12 double pickup combinations. and like binary there are only 8 triple pickup combinations: Brings the total to 26. Way to many to demo.I would just do a top down: N, Ns, N+M, Ns+Ms, N+M+B, ( and do all 8 combos ), then M, Ms, M+B, Ms+Bs, and Bs alone. The most interesting would be each pick up unsplit, and then split, and the 3 pickup combos, and then N+M, M+B, and Bridge alone. Thanks for playing and demoing this. It answered a lot of questions about the 3 pickup guitars I had not thought about.
God damn that's honestly one of the best sounding SG's I've ever heard. The pickup blending isn't really my thing but it's so cool they made it so you can basically ignore all that
You’ll be glad you did, had my blackie for 2 days, scheduled a day off today just to play it more, I’ve got 11 gibsons 20 guitars total, this thing is the lightest sweetest playing guitar I’ve ever touched and it’s a tone monster
WOW ...to be able to play tour whole set without changing guitar' ...the multitude of tone variation is amazing, clean or cranked, ...extra master volume is such a bonus -swells and 'violining' without going to a Strat. That hum can be shielded very easily ...love how the 'Captain' logo blends in and looks like a Gibson logo. Great demo Austin, cost reflects the tone variation, great innovation and of course, Kirk Douglas signature series. Just one problem... Which one? ...both look fantastic and visually pleasing' gold - black? ...green - chrome? ...such a versatile guitar, should have named it the 'Captain Kirk tone master'
I'm so Glad The Captain specked such a versatile guitar for tiny live spaces where every movement has to be planned. Great for submarines and Mars missions as well as cruises. BRAVO !!!!
I love that guitar!!! The roots!!!! I’m mainly a metal guy, but love my rock and just like the band name roots!!! This guitar has a place in my heart! Awesome man! Thanks for doing this.
"Whoopidee Whoo" - I always wondered what they were called. ;-) I replaced my metal Grovers with Kluson pearloids and the neck dive was gone. SG's should come stock with classic tuners.
I’ve got a 2004 Epiphone 61 Les Paul Custom (3 pickup SG shape) that is wired in a similar way with 3 volume and 1 tone but without the split coil functions! I bought it used about 5 years ago so not sure if standard wiring or modified but find it very versatile! I’ve added a Maestro as I think they look killer with one!
I like all of them! The chrome the gold! The colors! All of them! But my personal favorite is the old one in walnut. Something about that dark wood with the dark reddish brown color. It looks like ox blood. But anyone of them would make me smile and very happy!
Hey trogly that distortion sound was amazing I know a little bit about kirk Douglas its actually a messed up story but when I found prince passed Jimmy Fallon did a tribute to prince and I remember seeing prince play kirks epiphone Crestwood then out of nowhere when prince got done playing the solo he took the guitar off and threw in the air and it landed face first and all u heard was a loud ringing sound so prince paid for his kirk to get his guitar fix thats how I knew about kirk
Wait a minute,. He borrowed someone else's guitar and then threw it on the ground when he was done? That's an ugly story. I guess it's good that he had the wherewithal to fix it and everything but it just seems unnecessarily rude. Some stories about famous player's are shocking, like George Lynch stealing Warren DeMartini's Marshall head from his house. That one was rough to process.
I like the new Peter frampton Phoenix and how it wired. Top volume knob controls the neck and bridge, bottom controls the middle. The selector switch has neck, neck and bridge and then bridge. Use the volume knob for middle pickup use
Whoa! Love the green one with the chrome hardware, that'd be the one I'd take. Tons of tonal and pickup combinations! Even though a lot of guitarists may not every single one, it's nice to have options. Cool guitars, thanks trogly! 👍
Gotta love the moment he understood how many options are there plus clean and dirty and gives up even calculating how many combinations you get with this one :)
The black one looks more cooler than the green one! I’m also getting the Jimi Hendrix vibes, because it kinda looks like his guitar but in different colors
That was great. My favorite color is Green so it's nice to know that color is as cool in person. I'm also a big fan of "Swiss Army Knife" guitars. I'd like to see a bunch of people compare their do-everything guitars.
I have a warmorth explorer style that I did similar, with a dime in the bridge, a phatcat in the middle, and a SH2 Jazz in the neck. Both hums were able to split with middle roll in, but no master volume. I got so sick of it that I removed the middle phatcat and put a mini toggle for the neck in the missing volume pot hole. Gotta say I love it now, hated it then cuz it was soo effing complicated. But someone in Captain Kirk's position would love it with the variation of music played for the show, he's such a talented musician
I always wanted a black and gold SG but I went for the Inv Green. It should be here in a few days. It's crazy people overpricing used ones on Reverb. Thanks for your videos
I saw a review on these a few days ago. 2 problems they noted was that the wiring could be easily reorganized so that the 3-way toggle and the center volume control can be reworked to be independent like the neck and bridge. The other was that the magnet in the middle pickup is in backward, and therefore puts all the pickups in parallel instead of series. Again, this too, is easily fixable.
Smoking guitars. Love the colors and endless tones. For the $$$$ these may be the best guitars. They have great tone, endless combinations, light weight, and a history of any style at any time.
Austin great show today. I read all the comments. This guitar is a home run. For most of us. One guitar like this would work. So many tones. I’ve been cussing you from the first Kirk Douglas you demoed awhile back. Can’t get this one out of my head. The only cunnundrom is what color. I like them all. Probably the green. I got a fender Telecaster the same color. Thanks for posting this video.
Hey Trogly, greetings from good ole Germany! The electric idea of these lovely ladies - besides the extra knob + the push-pull options - seems quite classic. My Les Paul copy works the same way. The mid PU is always on and the volume knob for it lets you dive into an additional stage of sound. It makes my guitar sound a little twangy when I turn it all in. Thx for the great video, I really adore the Les Paul Special style guitars.
I think this would have to be my dream SG setup, would love to get my hands on one one-day Gotta admit, initially I thought the extra volume control on the pic guard was unnecessary, but it makes sense if you’re running two or three pick ups and you want to mute the guitar quickly
Great review . I would like to know if you prefer the tone of the Les Paul standard 60s model over this SG. I would like to buy one of them but can’t afford both. However I once owned an SG standard and was not impressed with it . Which would you prefer ? Your answer would be much appreciated. Thanks 🙏 🤟😷
As far as the lyre tailpiece goes, I would love to see more models use what is on the Derek Trucks signature SG. The plate with the lyre is still there but the vibrato part is replaced with a stop bar. Its the best of both worlds if you don't use a vibrato, or don't trust that design.
At first, I didn't like the look of these guitars with the three pick-ups, but by the end, after hearing some of the varied tones available, I like it. The one thing I definitely do not like is the Vibrola tremolo and tailpiece. If I had the money and could play well enough to do it justice, I'd buy one in the Inverness green finish.
For the money and all the tonal possibilities..it's a great guitar. The color options are very cool... classy custom or customized. I hope Lee Anderton "The Captain" over at Andertons Music Co. picks one up..it has his name on it! Thanx for reviewing
I think all high end guitars should come with a case and a nice guitar strap, hell I dont want to drop my new guitar and the brand name should care that I keep my guitar in good condition
Both sweet take the green if I was buying one . Of course we always play both exactly why I have a white fender jag when I wanted orange. That be a good review how two guitars can be awesome but one has a little mojo. Weird how guitars are like that is it wood, electronics, etc etc
hello. lots o' tones. I got a LP with SD Triple Shot mounting rings - each pup' has 3 positions on the ring. a bit more easy but still more than you really need. the new Frampton signature has VOS with middle blend, a lot easier. these SGs are nice sounding and look great. beam me up Scotty. Ü ♫
I dont mind this wiring and if I ever get a three pickup sg or les paul I want this wiring for sure. Im getting a similar system done to my strat. My volume will control my neck and bridge, my bottom tone will now be a blender for the middle when I want it. And a three way for my bridge and neck.
It would have been nice to play this and the Hendrix sg side by side. I wonder what the difference would be between the hendrix pups and these. I got my black Kirk last week and love it. It stays in tune as well as my LP.
I’ve been waiting for a review of the Captain Kirk SG. Sounds good-I’m not crazy about the volume drop when using the coil splits, but that’s what happens with coil splits. I’m partial to the Inverness Green-I may have to get one! They are a bit pricey, though.
PRS solved the coil split/volume drop with their 85/15 PUs - they recruit some windings from the dropped PU (but not the magnets) to help drive the single coil. Ingenious.
I believe the middle pickup is just wired to the middle lugs of the the 3 way switch. Allowing it to be on at all times. Allows original tone and makes it very versatile at the same time.
Very impressed with this guitar I would purchase it if it had an ebony fretboard. Only thing missing from an otherwise amazing guitar! I'm kinda just rosewooded out if that make sense.
Nice video. The comments make me wonder why nobody backed the HP line just a few years ago. If they changed the 2019 neck to ebony and had matching chrome knobs, they would have perfected the lineup!
Finally a Gibson SG that has a volume knob in a place where it belongs :D sure it looks weird now, when we are used to the looks but I always hated the way Gibson desiged most of their guitars so that the volume knobs are hard to reach. I mean VS Fender.
To be perfectly honest I despise having knobs as close to the strings as I do on my strat; my SG will forever have the better layout for me. I'd also consider doing a master tone setup, as the two tone pots don't do enough independently of each other to warrant both being there for me. I will always be a Gibson guy in all respects.
@@MisterSwagify I was a Stratocaster guy for about 30 years, and then bought a Gibson Firebird, a Les Paul and SG just recently. I think it's what you are used to :)
Had a custom '69 SG, sold it before moving to the USA back in '82 (worst regret ever), saw and bought the first edition, red maple with gold Kirk SG trying to replace my departed '69 and loved it immediately for the playability and price. These ones are too expensive for me, my favorite would be the black with bleach pickguard and gold hardware, NICE!!!

G'day, Austin! Obviously, the next SG episode will be about one of Frank's SG's. I hope it's has information about the "SG" that wasn't actually a Gibson! I feel that you're one of the few folks around that can get the story correct. 😆. The tale of the guy that managed to get backstage with access to Frank in order to try and sell him a hand -made SG copy. We've all seen it, I think Dweezil featured it in a review of his Dad's guitars. I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us about your teaser roll. 😉 And once again....Im in love with that LP Special with the blue overspray! Since High School, I've had a thing for Specials... those, and the early Deluxe models... which were readily available in the mid-seventies. The sound of those Epi Minibuckers in a true Gibson shell...💖💖💖💖 What a great guitar! Wow... sorry about rambling on like this! 😊 Looking forward to seeing what time up with for the "Frank's SG" episode! Hope the weather is treating you kind out there. Have a happy and uneventful day!
I have an ES 333 with the ABR-1 bridge and a bigsby and you're right about the bridge moving when using the bigsby. I contacted gibson about what to do and they said install a Nashville style bridge since it has a thicker post.

No, I would rather have a black custom shop one. It's a beaut, just not for me.
this is the coolest guitar gibson has made in years
Unique yes, it's bells and whistles but in a really good way for me.
This finish (the greenish one) looks much better "in person". The stock photos we got don't do it justice.
Faded Pelham blue.
It's pretty much fantastic

That first guitar is basically a black beauty SG. I really like the black one. it's so much like the infamous black beauty Les Paul no doubt.
I am amazed at how many different tones you can get from that guitar! Amazing
Wow, Austin. Listening to your channel the last 3 years or so, this is the best sounding guitar you’ve demoed to date, IMO. Fantastic tone!

That green sg it's beautiful!
Austin, the multiple push/pull switches made you forget...
DOES IT STAY IN TUNE WHEN YOU USE THE TREMOLO?
I NEED TO KNOW!!!
Yes. I need to know too 😢
I almost lost ya Trog, ,3:15 and nearly naked yoga... But I'm back on track. Gotta sat though, my favorite ad in 10 years or more... If those are the ads you choose, then bless your heart, !!!
COOL GUITAR TROG... MY GRANDSON LOVES IT... STAY COOL... PEACE FROM CREEL CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO... WE GOT THE BLACK ONE...
I dig it brother
G'day, Austin! Obviously, the next SG episode will be about one of Frank's SG's. I hope it's has information about the "SG" that wasn't actually a Gibson! I feel that you're one of the few folks around that can get the story correct. 😆. The tale of the guy that managed to get backstage with access to Frank in order to try and sell him a hand -made SG copy. We've all seen it, I think Dweezil featured it in a review of his Dad's guitars.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us about your teaser roll. 😉
And once again....Im in love with that LP Special with the blue overspray!
Since High School, I've had a thing for Specials... those, and the early Deluxe models... which were readily available in the mid-seventies. The sound of those Epi Minibuckers in a true Gibson shell...💖💖💖💖 What a great guitar!
Wow... sorry about rambling on like this! 😊
Looking forward to seeing what time up with for the "Frank's SG" episode!
Hope the weather is treating you kind out there. Have a happy and uneventful day!
The big handle on that tremelo looks like the tiller off a sailing yacht.
I have an ES 333 with the ABR-1 bridge and a bigsby and you're right about the bridge moving when using the bigsby. I contacted gibson about what to do and they said install a Nashville style bridge since it has a thicker post.
