See How 2 Families Make Life Work Under 1 Roof

- Sisters Cathy Surianello and Debbie Scofield spend a lot of time together, which means their husbands and kids spend a lot of time together. So after years of joint vacations, holidays and weekends, the two families thought living in separate houses was a bit inefficient. “All of a sudden you say, ‘We’re always together,’” says Debbie’s husband Douglas. “‘Why are we going to separate houses with cars at night? We could just go to separate bedrooms.’”

Fun! One mortgage. More money for vacations.
In Asia, most of the families i know are living this way. Congratulations! U will be awesome kids.
Finally some NORMAL people that TAKE OFF THEIR SHOES INSIDE THE HOUSE
That's such a normal thing in India. We have families over 15 people living together in one roof.
Same in the middle east!
I was thinking the same
this is very typical set up here in th Philippines... mostly more extended...lol like with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins 😂😂😂
Our family has a mini apartment complex where each of my aunts and uncles are neighbors to my parents. Though that is not technically living together, it still makes me feel a lot better about living away from my parents as they won't be lonely at least and will have someone with them in case of emergency. Love it
Go to Accra, Ghana. 20-30 people live in giant compound houses. The elderly get a roof over their head, the sick get care, and everyone watches out for everyone else.
First i thought they are crazy, but the more i watched i got their idea, such a unique livestyle, it makes total sence👍🏻
All I know is that this home is absolutely beautiful and omg who wouldn't want to live in it!
exactly!
“as soon as they saw the billiards room, they were all in” honestly, relatable.
If I had a relationship like this with my sister that would be perfect! But I have lived with my sister and I would rather live on the street then live with her again.
That’s an example of family!
We’ve just started construction on our brand new multi-generational home! This story just warms my heart to know it really can work! ❤️
aw man, i wish i could see the floor plan of this house
I’m so impressed that they’re making this dynamic work
Families in America really need to do this. I didn't grow up around family so now I don't have a connection to my cousins.
Wish I knew a family I could do this with... What a JOY to have support & love under the same roof.
Not crazy at all. This is how I grew up in Jamaica. Moving here (The US) with just Me, my mom and my younger sister has been the hardest thing to get used to. Big families are amazing.
In Malaysia it is normal to have 3 generations living together.
Dang this is so cool. I wish I lived like this while growing up. Now I’m a bitter 22 year old living on my own not close with any of my family 😂lol
I love this, it is common to live like this in many parts of the world, in Greece our family live in flats on top of each other so almost the same, grandmas on bottom for easy access. I wish this was more common so many lonely people especially the elders would have a cozy home filled with love rather than a lonely elder home.
When I was younger me and my cousins lived in the same house with our grandparents, it's common in a lot of cultures
I'm pretty much convinced that sharing mealtimes is one of the most important parts of raising a connected family.
This is not unusual. Many cultures live this way. I guess what’s unique is that they designed a house around this way of living. But many homes have joint families.
This is beautiful! I also think this kind of family setting is working for them because both women are sisters ( family)! Though the guys ain’t from the same parents, men get along pretty great! I strongly believe things might have Bn different if the guys were brothers with the women from different parents!
This is a really good idea for the couples because even after all the kids are grown up and move out they will have each other. Not so much of empty nest syndrome. They can grow old together and the holidays will be fun.
Most of the families in India are joint family. 3 to 4 generation live together and it's very common.
Wow. Loved this! So many people could live so much better if they were simply willing to share. ❤️
Love this families commitment to making it work and in such beautiful surroundings.
I love y'all, this is what family should be like. Love it!♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
I like it, I have always envisioned my mom and aunt living under the same roof enjoying big family dinners because they were always together anyway, and that bed room balcony is my dream.
I'm glad it's working for them. Novel idea for the 21st century!
I and my husband also bought a home with one of my sisters and her husband. We planned to flip it and take the money to buy our own homes, but the arrangement worked so well for us we've been together for 21 years. We each have 5 children, and with so much adult supervision we have also been able to foster as well. This family listed many of the benefits of dual family living. You have to be willing to give up a little autonomy, but having the support right at home is wonderful. If you're interested in this living arrangement I would strongly suggest you do this like they did and buy a home with family that you're always spending time with. It's a like a marriage, you've got to enjoy each others company and have very similar lifestyles. Also, we found a realtor who caught our vision and helped us find a home that gave us plenty of private space. That's really important.
That kitchen and the organization level....wow. GOALS
multigenerational families living together in houses smaller than that is so common in asia.
This family story makes me smile and proud. This is a very good family story. Very inspiring!
Such a wonderful set up! I love it! I think pretty much most of the world outside America and parts of Europe live like this. I believe this is a trend that’s going to be more and more common in the U.S. just based on economic factors and the need for emotional support. I salute y’all
I'm single and live alone in a 5 bedroom home lol I need this in my life!
You really need to have that family dynamic for it to work. Great design, be interesting to hear from the kids how they feel about growing up in this type of house. They seem to make it work, God bless them.
Very cool. I wish more families did this!
Jeez, Cathy has some great taste.
Tbh if you can work it out , living together is pretty cool
Wonderful idea! Love the family wanting to be together and helping each other. We need more of those ideals.
This is way more than a house it's a home with a beautiful family 😍
If you’re lucky enough to have a wonderful, kind and loving family... This is a fabulous idea!
I think this is cool. As a child my family and my cousins family shared a small two bedroom townhouse, 10 people under one roof.
I think it's great. I wish I had this growing up. Now we all fragmented and fractured as a family unit.
So nice to see joint family together
What a big happy families. 💖💖💖

Amazing!!!!! I giggled cuz there are even 2 dogs!! Thank you for sharing your beautiful space.
I don’t understand why Americans find normal things a taboo?? Families live with each other in Europe Africa and Asia it’s totally normal
Love it, would have liked to see the rest of the house
Its nice to see this, grew up with a small family and nothing I know resembles how these people live so its interesting to see it work
Yes,yes, yes so special and lovely -make my day to watch this 👍👌👍
That house is so gorgeous I wouldn’t mind sharing it with lots of people. The cousins will be so close too!
Awesome..... Beautiful home.... Beautiful families.... Blessings
This is so beautiful, wish this was more of a American Cultural norm.
God bless you all , you’re inspirational wish you guys many happy years together in your new home 💖
What a beautiful home! This wouldn't work for most people but I would like to try it maybe for a month, great support system and you can never be lonely💕
Beautiful family beautiful home and beautiful life with good food hugs frm Sacramento 😊
This was just absolutely beautiful to watch
Beautiful family and beautiful home! ❤️
Thats a beautiful thing that they all love and enjoy eachothers company that much
I can live in the same acre with separate homes. But I can't live in the same home together. I like to have my home my own way and raising my kids my way.
In our community here in the Middle East that's very common even with strange sister in low or sisters ..not a real true sister.. and many times with parents in law.. it's very much normal for us
Very interesting..my mothers generation was like this when they were young but as the children grew..each family moved into their own homes..and so i was raised in a traditional single family home..my cousins the same...and now we are starting to get married and create our own families it would be interesting to present something like this.. (we are all graduate or doctorate level healthcare professionals and a couple lawyers..so we all have crazy stufent loans) this could be a wonderful investment into our futures if even for a short while to help us gain financial footing and pay down on our debt. I love this!
What a stunning home! Beautiful family
Unbelievable ,just wonderful for them to get on so so well.......great design ....
In South Asia this is what u see in most families 😍. Love that it’s coming to west! U guys will enjoy this living. The coolest thing is u have people around for always ,and depression have a ‘no entry’ to this home 😍
Interesting concept, thanks for sharing.
Love it, family is important!
Fantastic home! Fantastic family!
I reallly enjoy looking at this. Good for them. And yes, I wish others could live like them. They support each other especially the children.
Beautiful Family god Bless them

Wow, this is beautiful.
So beautiful great family values
I love this video , thanks
This is really wholesome.
We live this way in Oregon although fewer kids and a lot more typical home. Husband and his sister rather than two sisters however. It works very well for us.
Hi I like the houzz design because it's simple, functional, bright colors, utilization of space etc
That’s how we live in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Well done guys it hard to see a two families living together in Europe. I’ve live in UK for decades never seen anything like this here 🇬🇧. 2019.
Simply lovely!! I want to come over for Sunday sauce (that looked amazing👅).
Joint families are the best. Very common in india. Grew up in one. Feel so lucky.
Nice,I always thought that me and my twin sister would have a house together since both of our fiancé are best friends.
Omg, love love love everything about their way of life. Oh ye, the house is awesome as well
And this is truly the way to live.
I would love to be a part of a family like this. How amazing.
This is beautiful!
I thought it would look like living in a hotel and it does. I would want that top porch for sure! I wish we cudda seen the layout for the house.
