@afgymnast96 If I may chime in for history, every gymnastics fan should know about the great Diann Durham from Gary, Indiana. She was Bela Karolyi's first American star & Mary Lou Retton's more famous gymmate pre-1984. Diann was the 1983 U.S. national AA champ & also won three of the 4 individual events. Injuries hampered her 84 season & she was controversially left off the 1984 Olympic team.
It was good, but i honestly thought Jamie and Kristen were better. More mature dance, even more difficult tumbling. Regardless, Tasha did a great job at this competition... i wish she had gone to Athens, but at least she ended up with an olympic medal in the end.
A good way to find girls who were on the national team but didn't make huge waves in international competitions is to look in college gymnastics. A lot of the historically good schools (Bama, Georgia, UCLA, etc.) have teams composed mostly of girls who are former junior or senior national team members, but not necessarily huge stars (as athletes at that level often accept prize money and become ineligible.) And there are certainly girls of all colors on these teams.
@muffycat26 I think 1 thing many ppl overlook is how (until 2000 team prelims bb) Dawes was always the most consistent performer in team comp. I think a big part of her being there was that they knew 9/10, Dawes would hit, and her hit score could support 1 of the newer/less exp gymns who may have faultered. As for Atler, that was truly just a bag of what if's @ that point.but if she was there n could hit, there's no way she couldnt have helped the team to a medal regardless of Chinas age issue
@Mikizzle15 Both Shannon and Dominique came out of retirement too late! They should have been training 2 years earlier, but they both came back or started training more seriouslly in the Gym a year before! If Shannon had just given Vault up, and focused on Beam and Floor, she would have brought in some good numbers, because she had already improved and had an amazing Bars in 2000!
@dmann3g I think if they would have taken Bars away from Atler, and made her just focus on the other 3, which she was amazing at, I think she would have brought some high scores in! But there is also a lot of stuff that was going on during that time in her personal life, coach, and Bella telling her that he would come out of retirement to coach her, and then flaking on she and her mom, leaving them hanging after she left her long time coaches! Even having the alternate Alyssa Beckerman....
She did the 1/2 in 1/2 out to punch front in prelims at the 2003 Worlds too but fell on it. She also warmed up a double layout at one of the training camps leading up to the 2003 Worlds as well.
I dont think the American team did badly here at all, they were young and fresh (for the most part) and it just happens that Romania and Russia were hugely better at the time..... Plus they got the Team Bronze 10 years later, due to Yang Yuns 'secret'
Wasn't that the Olympics that they considered disqualifying the Romanian gold medal too, since one of their team members tested positive for something or other (was it cold medicine?). U.S. could have been awarded silver, after the fact.
Dan Shevock yes Raducan. Their performance was 4th place, which I think was fortunate at the time. It’s only indirect factors that moved them to bronze.
The judges messed up here (in her benefit), the Triple turn was underrotated and hopped out of, so that should be no bonus, and the Double-L wasn't completed properly either. Should just be a 9.8 start value. It's weird she tried a Triple turn combo anyway, Double turn + Wolf jump 1/1 would already give her a 10.0 start.
Sorry but this routine lacked the necessary choreography to go along with the music and Schwikert doesn't strike me as being an "artistic" gymnast. Her tumbling was good but the routine just didn't flow right.
Whats interesting, is that Bela gave her this music which was betty OKino;s from 1991. If you compare the choreography, you can see how immature the dance is here, its almost embarrassing.
Such a shame. She did her part... but her teammates didn't. If they had, they may have won bronze. If Ray, Maloney and Dantzscher looked like they did at Nationals.... They could've beat Romania; which would've meant gold. But, they would've needed the Russians to still make the mistakes they ended up making in these team finals. When the Russians hit.... they were untouchable.
Sorry but there is no way that the USA girls would have won the gold at these Olympics even at their best. They lacked the difficulty and the depth across all events to challenge Russia or Romania. Vault in particular was a very weak event for them. Beam too.
@@mikeg8375 Ray and Maloney were scoring in the 9.8 range at Nationals if you go back and watch and with Dantzscher in the solid 9.7 range on bars and floor. Chow was capable of big scores on each apparatus but just didn’t deliver. Is it likely the Olympic judges would’ve scored them similarly to US Nationals? Probably not. But the girls performed nowhere near how they did at U.S. Nationals so, we’ll never know. The Romanians were quite mediocre on bars. Could the U.S. easily beat Romania? Absolutely not. But was it possible? Sure. Plus, add the factor that the crowd was fairly loud for the Americans, so, if they’d been hitting their routines that could’ve kept the momentum and maybe knocked the Romanians off their game with crowd noise. The crowd definitely played a factor in knocking the Romanians and Russians off their game before (Atlanta). Mind you, we’re going of ifs and maybes … it’s definitely more exciting when the competition is close. I wanted Russia to win, anyway. 😆

Tasha did great at these Olympics. She outperformed alot of her teammates.
that double lay was amazing. even with the 2 previous olympians on the team.... she proved to be the most consistent.

WONDERFUL triple full. I also liked the way she bounced out of her Shushunova-- directly onto her back. Go Tasha!
Definitely the best floor routine for the Americans in this final.

@@mikeg8375 Kristen mature dancing, LOL! OK. I do agree Kristen's was still better just because her tumbling was off the charts difficult.
One of my favorite routines from Tasha.
The music cut was horrible, but the performance was excellent. Incredible triple full at the end there.
The entire choreography for that routine was terrible. The gymnastics was great, but the dance and flow SUCKED!

This is Betty Okino's floor music from 1991. Not just the same music but the exact same edit! I never realized that.

actually, it was Dong Fanxao (I think that's how it's spelled). And Dong had no idea about these rules.

@@rolandgreen7484 They credited her with 10
@@Zuranthium Thanks, wow that was generous.
@tmwalkerm i heard it was because they found that a member of the chinese team was too young, like GraceEleganceDestiny said.
@afgymnast96 UM also Joyce Wilborn and Angela Denkins!
True plus the code of points changed.
agree!
agree muffy, well said
@muffycat26 I couldn't agree more.
she got a 9.600 on floor, but she did get a 9.675 on bars :)
it's not easy to keep the same level of difficulty as the body changes and many injuries pile up with the years.

is it just me or does she look like shawn. her body type is almost exactley the same except shes a little taller.
Her tumbling got weaker as she got older. The double layout looks so much better than a tucked full-in.
