since a lot of people are asking: yes, if you stay up for days and then pass out. It's insomnia. if you can't fall asleep until after the sun has risen. It's insomnia. if you can't stay asleep. It's insomnia. if you can't go back to sleep after waking up. It's insomnia. there are multiple different types of insomnia.
what about not being able to sleep, and then waking up randomly in the middle of the night at all times when you do, and then only being tired when the sun's halfway up and no other time, but still able to sleep 28/30 days?
because (I'm not sure, but i think) not really insomnia, but most parts of it is like/is some of what you just listed.

depends. there are shitloads of types of insomnia, all the word means is the inability to sleep. personally, i might say im more nocturnal than an insomniac. if its night time, cant sleep in a dark or light room. if its day, i can sleep given that the room is somehow made dark, sometimes. if i wake up at any point, im not going back to bed till the next night. a lot of the time im just up for 2 days straight and then just clock out on my bed from exhaustion for a few hours, and pretend that's healthy sleep.
and to clear a misconception if anyone has it, no, insomnia does not mean that you dont feel tired. im just as tired as anyone else is after the same amount of time is elapsed, i just cant sleep to *stop* being tired until my body decides to let me. Still, its gotten me to be really good at pulling allnighters. vacation time is amazing because i dont have to try and pray that my internal clock works when the world says it should (at night) and i can just sleep whenever i get the opportunity. i get this weird foggy feeling in the back of my eyes when i *can* sleep, and if i dont then do so within a few minutes it goes away and im stuck up for the next 5 or so hours. It's Bullshit man, Bullshit XD

Okay I want to mention that you should NEVER take an entire bottle of melatonin, especially if you are on other medication. A while back I was taking a large amount of melatonin every single day and it became harder and harder to sleep as time went on. It also had a very negative effect on my mental health but that is likely due to conflict with other medication. I would highly recommend not taking melatonin, or taking only the recommended dosage of it.

I know right. I suffer from insomnia I am up every night to 10:00AM or some times I don't sleep for a day or so. I am up every night on the computer or my ps3. It also causes me to have depression right on top of being bipolar-depression as I am also bipolar I take thing like NyQuil and benadryl It works sometimes but doesn't kick in till around 9:40-10:00.
Brennan McMullen Have you tried fast acting melatonin? You get them over the counter at most drug stores. I would start off with a small dose to test it out, but you aren't going to get much of an effect until you start around 10 milligrams (for me at least).

I keep coming back to this song everytime I am awake at night and my anxiety is acting up, i might have anxiety induced insomnia bc i cannot shut my eyes for the life of me when my nerves are through the roof, I'll stay up all night and then not see the point in sleeping during the day so i stay up even longer, or i take naps during the day bc thats when i feel the safest.
