Now, THIS is what you get with Billy, Tommy Bolin, Jan Hammer, and Lee Sklar on the same track! Billy going full-bore pedal to the metal and still managing to stay in the pocket.
Q4 is one of the greatest fusion workouts of all time. Turn it up to 11 and press play again. Tommy Bolin just kills it. Highly influential upon Jeff Beck's change in style.
No dancers, no girls twerking, no auto tune, no studio tricks, just master musicians, playing interments and jamming. It's a gumbo of goodness. Nasty, dirty, get down Jam music from the heart, expressing a love for music.
It's rock, it's classical, it's jazz. it's funk. That's why they call it fusion. Other fusion artists...Alphonse Mousson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock (has both traditional jazz and fusion).
With the amazing Tommy Bolin on guitar.. thank you for doing Quadrant 4.. Please stay on the Tommy B. reactions.. he does not get enough love. "Ride The Wind" or "Standing In the Rain" with Tommy in the James Gang, and "Wild Dogs" or "Dreamer" from Tommy Bolin's solo LP's.. Thanks.
Tommy Bolin crazed fandango and you know you know from the archives vol. 1 Savannah woman from Teaser. You won't be disappointed Just like the marching powder reaction. By the way here Tommy was 22...
Great album from 1973. Bought it new and it's still on the shelf. Can't go wrong when you have Billy on drums, Tommy Bolin on guitar, Jan Hammer on the keys and synthesizer, Ron Carter on Acoustic bass and Lee Sklar on bass, Joe Farrell on flute and sax and Ray Barretto on the congas. I know you already did a live version of "Stratus" but suggest you do the version on this same album.
A master of'Fusion"... Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report And the many members of those band's were a college experience in the 70s.
That's a fact. Saw all 3 of them perform at different times in the 70's at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Best and most complex music I have ever witnessed.
Unexpected to see someone reacting to stuff like this!! Spectrum i think it's fair to say is Billy Cobham's most iconic/classic album. It doesn't get much more 70's fusion than this!!
My first introduction to Billy Cobham was his album "Crosswinds" - introduced to me by my older brother (who was in our high school jazz band) so naturally he was a huge influence on me in my choice of music back in the early to mid-seventies. The title track is possibly too long for you to post (it takes up the entirety of the first side of the album). But... "The Pleasant Pheasant" is also awesome. Nevertheless you absolutely should check out the album!
Tommy Bolin, one of the most underrated guitarist in the history of guitar playing. Check out his playing on James Gang,Bang and Miami, solo albums Teaser and Private Eye's, Deep Purple,Come and Taste the Band etc. One of the greatest of all time! He should be a household name like all the other great guitarist. :-)
First time listen . Bolin impressed . He ripped it good - with fat tones and distortion . Utter brilliance otherwise , as expected , from Maestro's Cobham & Jan Hammer . Worth a revisit .
YOU of all people who do these kinds of reaction videos YOU should hear Cobham in his early fame stage with THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA. listen to his drumming on a song like Vital Transformation (from the album The Inner Mounting Flame) and remind yourself this is not a modern day song it was played in 1971. Drumming has come a long way since then...we are just starting to catch up to what Cobham was doing IN 71. Or if you really want to see something there is a video of them playing in 72 and maybe you could review that. All I know is even if you listen to their first song together called Meeting of the Spirits it will blow your mind...this was a band consisting of 5 virtuoso musicians. Btw I like your taste in music, you know what is good ....like Gentle Giant
Actually what you say is a jam session (I get the freedom exhibited seems like jamming but it is often written this way), is actually jazz fusion, like the BeBop era in jazz you have musicians with outrageous skills killing it because they can. The well here is very deep and sweet. Check out "Snarky Puppy" (ua-cam.com/video/L_XJ_s5IsQc/v-deo.html) for a vision of current jazz forward thinking.
@@jakeguy8968 :)...That's why I said "don't know"...You could do worse being influenced by Billy C...Alex was a monster drummer too...God rest his soul...
Blackmore had nothing to do with Tommy joining. Coverdale and Paice heard the Spectrum album at a party and that’s how they knew who Tommy was. Blackmore wasn’t even talking to the Purple guys after he quit
Whole album is phenomenal!!! Try Le Lis/ To the woman in my life!! Also try Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions of the emerald beyond and Stanley Clark - School Days!!!
I get no classical vibes from this at all. This is straight up jazz/rock fusion. I'm gonna recommend a track for you to check out. The band is called 'Brand X', and the song you need to react to is called 'Malaga Virgin'. And you'll never guess who the drummer is.
Now, THIS is what you get with Billy, Tommy Bolin, Jan Hammer, and Lee Sklar on the same track! Billy going full-bore pedal to the metal and still managing to stay in the pocket.
He's not just staying in the pocket. Most of the time he's making it.
Ck out Lee Sklar page. He plays along with these recordings few months back.. Master bass man
I saw Billy live recently. He's still got it, even at 78 years old. Amazing player!!!

All really great along with my favorite which was Weather Report, with Havana, Birdland, and many others!

Tommy Bolin plays a great solo and shows his versatility as a player.

We could stand see some WR jams on here. RIP Jaco 🤗
MO is amazing. I wish I could've seen them. I did see RTF on their reunion tour
Billy Cobham, an absolute monster on drums!
I highly recommend listening to this whole album . You won't be sorry.

TX Chad.. That was Jan Hammer first solo, then Tommy Bolin second solo. Mr Billy Cobham double bottom.. Lee Sklar on that fat bottom.. FLAMES
Tommy Bolin master on ECHO PLEX
Alex Van Halen listnening to Quadrant 4, "Hey guys, I have an idea for that hot for teacher song we were messing with."

Q4 does go bananas, thanks for the breakdown.
Tommy Bolin didn't know how to read music on this album he just played what he felt

That’s an incredible album! It really showcases the different aspects of his songwriting
1973. The year I went into the Navy. I was 17 at the time. And listening to this awesome musicianship.🔥👍🤪 And,yeah. I was a stoner.
The song that starts at 100 MPH - then picks up speed. Good stuff.
Same album please do Snoopy’s search/Red Baron. Awesome stuff!
Billy is my favorite drummer
Pure fury! I’ve been listening to this since 1978 and it makes me so happy to see it fall on fresh ears!

Birds of Fire...Mahavishnu Orchestra
This whole album is killer. Also Mahavishnu Orchestra. In which he was a member.
Played with Miles Davis and Mahavishnu Orchestra...'nough said. Then we have Tommy Bolin ripping away; killer stuff.
You crack me up, Chod, in a good way! “... just going bananas. I don’t know what’s been going on lately…“,lol. Appreciate your honest reactions. :-)

To go 'Space Boogie' from Jeff Beck's There and Back.
It's, actually: keys, first. then the guitar comes in a bunch later, mimicking what Jan is playing on the keys (that main melody riff). 👍👍
Think of what Spinal Tap Mk II could have become with Jazz Odyssey!
Puppet Show and Spinal Tap. Derek Smalls on the bass...he wrote this.
We are not about to do a free form jazz exploration in front of a festival crowd
Another good example of Billy's drumming is The Noonward Race by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
😂 Cobham going off...in the bass player is doing a gospel baseline. Phenomenal 🔥

If you lived in the 1970s….you have heard this music. It was used in countless commercials and background music to sporting events.
I bought this CD and thought what a waist of money until 30 years later and headphones. Brilliant!
This drum beat influenced Alex Van Halen on a song called "Hot for Teacher" by Van Halen
Don't know if that's true but; as a drummer; I hear it...:)

Listen to 'One Word' by The Mahavishnu Orchestra with Billy Cobham on drums.
I saw the Billy Cobham Group in Germany in April 1989. Great band, great crowd, great cocktails.
Mahavishnu Orchestra - One Word
Billy on the drums, masterpiece.
Tommy Bolin was the GOAT guitar player. RIP...
Tommy Bolin 🎸
Oh, according to the bass player, the entire album was done in a couple of days and they were mostly 1st or 2nd takes with not much rehearsal.
...the solo that got Tommy the Purple gig after Ritchie’s hearing and recommendation 🔥
Blackmore had nothing to do with Tommy joining. Coverdale and Paice heard the Spectrum album at a party and that’s how they knew who Tommy was. Blackmore wasn’t even talking to the Purple guys after he quit
Chod a must...an allstar cast of Jazz Greats!!!...........Deodato-Also Sprach Zarathustra.......YOU WON'T BE SORRY...we haven't steered you wrong yet
Dem drums is runnin
you're so close to mahavishnu orchestra. go for it
Jan Hammer played the synth solo at the beginning of the song.
Birds of fire By Mahavishnu Orchestra Billy and John really kills it
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a great album...go chod go
it's COBB (Like Corn)-Ham
Whole album is brilliant
There is a song on Jeff Beck's There and Back album called Space Boogie, stylistically similar to this. Check it out!
It's Cobham, like corn on the cob and ham.
Whole album is phenomenal!!! Try Le Lis/ To the woman in my life!!

Hey Chod , here's a super group for your ears > Dave Weckl with Chick Corea live 4 years ago playing " Got a Match " IMHO the best drummer out there.
More Tommy Bolin !!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok now how about Mahavishnu Orchestra >> Lala's dance with Narada Michael Walden on the kit, Jean Luc Ponty on electric violin
Hell Yeah !!!!!!!!!!
Prince does a killer version also. Michael Walden I believe on skins.
this reminds of van halens = hot for teacher
Edging ever closer to The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Soon.
All of these players are heavy hitters.......
Check out Allen Holdworth! Holdsworth? Something like that HE IS EDDIE VAN HALEN FAVORITE FUSION GUITARIST. Nobody really knows of him RIP!!!
Great recommendation for Allan Holdsworth

This is the base. Back in the day, this was called "Jazz Rock". Billy is the original god.
And it's COBham, not "Coe-burn", fellah.
