I gotta thank you Jared, every one of your retrospectives has completely validated why I shouldn't ever play a Final Fantasy game. It's SMT, Monster hunter & Souls RPGs from now on!
We actually first hear Tidus's name spoken verbally by Waka in Kingdom Hearts 1. I remember being so dumbfounded by it and thinking it was just Waka's accent lol.
@@SuzakuMurkrow198 It’s almost like people forget that Dissidia exists. Why are you fools referring to Kingdom Hearts when you have a dedicated Final Fantasy Spin-off to reference??? Hell, World of Final Fantasy says “Tee-dus.” C’mon.
@@Deoxys_Used_Mimic Nobody forgot Dissidia. Jarod mentioned that Tidus' name was 1st said verbally in that particular game. Which it wasn't. So its actually the opposite. People tend to forget that it was said years before Dissidia or the PSP were even a thing.
The biggest thing about the laughing scene in FFX is that *the characters literally start laughing at themselves normally right afterwards because of how silly they're being*. I really don't get how people can miss that.
@@msnoodles1 Just because it's supposed to sound bad doesn't preclude it from being made fun of for being bad. That's why people enjoy bad movies. It absolutely deserves all the laughter and mockery it gets.
@@ximienlundquist8487 Context doesn't matter. It's the same as Zero's What Am I Fighting For or Dante's Light line. Just because something is intentionally bad and cringe and funny doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be made fun of. It doesn't make it good. It doesn't make it deep. A bad thing is still bad.
I'm surprised you didn't go into Tidus's relationship with Jecht as the game progresses. It's a big part of his character, and the ways his travels help him grow and reach a place where he can at least face his father instead of blindly hating him... it was really something.
Was a major reveal when Tidus faced facts on the Farplane and realized he blamed Jecht for his mother's lack of attention and love. Jecht was a better parent than Tidus' mom, though his drinking problem and ego made it hard for him to connect. It's a shame Jecht didn't realize how much he screwed up until he had been journeying in Spira and kicked the bottle.
@harley, this is not true. The fight scales to your level as to avoid getting soft locked. I have played ffx multiple times and never leveled kimahri due to how useless he is. And even then, the fights weren’t a face roll but not hard either.
The “Tee-dus” pronunciation is because it’s derived from “tida”, the Okinawan word for the sun (to contrast Yuna’s moon theming). But I didn’t know that when I was a kid, so he’s still Tie-dus to me forever since that’s how I assumed it was pronounced.
Tidus to me since the game has a lot of Ocean themes. Tides (as in waves), Tide-us. Americans took it differently than the Japanese and I think that's beautiful how it worked so well. I like Japan's meaning more as it connects Tidus to Yuna and it's romantic.
But this is actually a good example on how the pronunciation of a name can be influenced by where you live / the language you speak. I'm German and due to german pronunciation rules I always pronounced it as as Teedus.
@@jermainezinnerman7450 Because that's not the argument. I don't care if its' meme'd. That's fine. Memes' don't even need context in this way. My problem comes in when its' looked at *without* contextualizing it whatsoever for the sake of a review or a narrative of the game. It is/was *often* reviewed with that scene being used to point towards the voice acting *itself* being bad or cringey without contextualizing that it was deliberate. Again, I have no problem with the memes' or even if they just straight up hated the voice acting but it's was *often* pointed to to almost an exclusion of being an example of bad VA without context to fit that narrative.
Even the characters in-game basically acknowledge that the laugh is fake and awkward but they are doing it out of fun, basically Yuna pretends to smile when she feels sad and tells Tidus to do the same, only that they together scaled it to a fake laugh. Honestly I don't get why people criticize this game for the voice acting, specially on that scene. Even the sped up dialogue is not the voice actors fault, it's either from the translator that didn't provided them shorter lines to fit the small time frame or the audio mix guy that sped it up in such unclean manner. The only valid voice acting criticism I can think of is Seymour's voice I personally like it but it's pretty divisive, some fans like it and others don't.
@@jermainezinnerman7450 Because the meme isn't that the laugh is awkward on purpose and that's funny. The meme is "lmao what were the voice actors thinking, they can't act"
@@jermainezinnerman7450 Because people call it those things without examining the context. They look at the moment on its own, ignore that Yuna does it too, and use it to artificially fuel their hatred of Tidus or the game itself. That and/or they use it as limp-dicked "proof" that FF should never have gotten voice acting or that James Arnold Taylor (ie. literally Michael J. Fox's voice double who's also done work for Disney and been Ratchet's voice ever since the first Ratchet and Clank game) can't act to save his life.
Yeah, I'm surprised he never mentioned it while discussing the music. "Suteki da ne" is a good song and all, but "To Zanarkand" is the single best piece of Final Fantasy music not from FF6.
@@littlekuribohimposte Kimahri is great though, Auron's gimmick is his weapon has Pierce, if Kimahri has Pierce he is like Auron, even more so if you sent him down Auron path in Sphere Grid. 2 Hard hitters Or, the Wakka path for Accuracy and then he takes out flying enemies just like Wakka does. Kimahri is the Blue Mage of the group.
Thank you so much ProJared for being one of the few youtubers to actually get the laughing scene correct. It always irritates me when people point it out to say how bad the voice acting was, but leaves out the context it was.
i always thought they should have at least resynced the voiceovers. that's why it seems bad. i want a modder one day to resync every voiceover in the game. i know it would make a difference
It's not about the context though, the scene goes on too long and I like many do not like Tidus voice actor. His voice throughout the game is irritating and the laugh and it's length makes it more insufferable. It's not that it's forced, it's just bad and could have been done far better.
@@hvhs01 if it's the voice acting in general that they don't like, why do people single out that scene as their main example? I understand if people don't like it but surely there are others scenes that they also wouldn't enjoy for that reason
@@hellogoodbyeandallinbetween I and many others dislike not only Tidus as a character but also the voice acting in the entire game. Remember, this is supposed to be a good looking, star athlete that the audience is supposed to connect with. How can you connect with with this person when they act and sound like a 4 year old? Most people I know that have played this game like the game but not most of the characters. The battle system is good, the sphere grid is meh but whatever. People don't like Tidus, Wakka, Rikku and Seymour as characters, and also take issue with their voice acting. This scene just accentuates their dislike of that voice acting regardless of the context. We have had to listen to this whining infant constantly moan on and on and on, and when we get here, we just want him to go away with no care for the underlying meaning of the scene. Just remember, Yuna told him to try laughing, he didn't start on his own accord, she told him to, and then even she says he should stop. The scene only gains its' meaning when SHE joins in.
The best thing about Seymour is that he isn't even the final boss and becomes more of a nuisance (like team rocket from pokemon) than anything, and that his final fight is after the endgame weapons become available. I killed that mf in two hits lmaooo, actin like he ain't just fodder at that point
His plan is to control Sin and destroy as many people as possible. He even says that he has "all the time in the world" to learn how to do so. He never wanted to stop Sin from killing people. The opposite, in fact.
I disagree that the characters dont really experience growth or change. Lulu: goes from being cold and standoffish and angry about wakka refusing to let go of chappu and not trusting tidus also because of chappu to the wise big sister/mentor role for both yuna and rikku as well as being the only one to make sure tidus actually knows whats going on most of the time. She also comes to terms with chappus death and gets with wakka. Rikku goes from being afraid of lightning and being the typical childish one of the group to taking charge and trying to find a way to prevent yunas sacrifice, as well as forgiving wakka for his racism. Amd if you follow the natural path of her sphere grid she ends up in lulus grid, mastering the magic she fears. Kimahri goes from a silent guardian to speajing to the group more. As well as standing up to the tribe he left in shame and taking down his bullies. Wakka you bring up in the video, but he learns that blindly following religion solves nothing and learns to accept chappus death as well as get over his hatred of al bhed Auron changes the least outside of our perception of him as we learn his motives. Hes theres to make tidus and yuna learn what they need to to succeed where he failed in life. But like wakka, in his youth he went from blindly following yevon to openly criticising the maesters in public and challenging yunalesca after braskas and jechts needless sacrifice. Yuna goes from a soft spoken girl following in her fathers footsteps to a young woman with an unbreakable conviction willing to allow herself to be ostracized by the nation shes fighting for and even still journeying to defeat sin after being made a public enemy. Tidus changes the most, going from an actual crybaby throwing selfish tantrums to someone that is willing to throw his life away for the sake of yuna and a whole world he doesnt even belong to.
Idk, I took Kimahri down Tidus' path and ran a "time control" party. Between Haste, Slow, Delay attack, and quick hit on two characters, 90% of the enemies in the entire game could do absolutely nothing.
Kimahri doesn't become useful unitl a thrid of the game. and his ultimate weapon was really good. that's what i loved about this game though. you could get him off his side of the grid (which is the best levelling up system in any RPG)
I never leveled kimahri until having rikku apart of the team. Then only leveled him down rikkus path to learn steal. Being so under leveled his fight with the ronsos is straight broken and you can steal 2 or 3 level breaks.
Absolutely love how you used the cross-fade transition. I noticed it before you made your point and i thought "huh, that was an odd editing choice." Then when you finally made the point about it, your brilliance in editing struck. Fantastic job Jerd.
I actually always understood the laugh scene as Tidus being deliberate. He was in a bad mood, and Yuna was trying to cheer him up with some advice, but because Tidus is a bit immature and didn't know what to do, he sort of did the letter but not the spirit. Similar to how when I was a kid and was told to take a deep breath while annoyed, I would do it really fast and exaggeratedly as a sort of "Okay, fine, I'll do what you said but this is stupid and I'm not taking it seriously". So he's laughing badly *on purpose* from an in-story perspective, and Yuna decides to try to keep cheering him up by joining in as well as demonstrate how silly he sounds. Later in the scene they both start actually laughing, if I recall, and it is very natural sounding.
That... actually make sense. No wonder why Tidus look like he never laugh before in his life eventhough he can laugh normally later on. And I thought it was an issue from game developers and voice actors at the time.
Tidus was acting a bit immaturely but Yuna also put him on the spot. She'd had a lot of practice smiling in the face of sorrow, and while her advice isn't _bad_ it's a lot to ask from someone who's just learned his father has turned into a mass-murdering beast. So Tidus takes the piss out of Yuna by forcing out the most unnatural laugh. And doesn't stop even when asked. :D I think his voice actor does a great job too - you can hear the frustration and tension slowly relieve while he's screwing around with the stupid laugh. Yuna's advice worked! :)
@rikijasmin they keep making fun of it because they’re embarrassed that they were wrong the first time so they double down and pretend the context doesn’t make sense
Jared, you handled the explanation of the laughing scene so well. I’ve heard that laugh countless times without ever knowing why it was happening, and your commentary on it nearly brought me to tears. Absolutely amazing job covering this game and the rest of the series. I can’t wait for more
Yeah the voice actors nailed what that scene was suppose to convey. In retrospect, it's honestly uplifting to see two people, one who knows nothing and one who knows too much, laugh rather than be consumed by fear.
I've always known about the context that she tells him "try laughing" and then he does that, but I never caught on to the undertones of why it was so awkward sounding or that it's intentional. I always thought it was just like that because Tidus isn't used to laughing or something, so he didn't know how to naturally do it. This explanation makes way more sense about it than I ever realized.
@@marcvaldelara not only did they know it, but James Arnold Taylor actually made a video himself to defend it. It baffles me that people use it as an example of bad voice acting.
Fun fact: All these weird jarring things aren't present in the PAL version. I was super confused when he brought up the freeze-frame cuts and the speed-ups in the audio.
@@CatalystOfFire Since the PAL runs at 50hz, they were able to save some space on the cutscenes. As a result, they didn't run up against the space limitations of the disc.
It is interesting going back to games you played as a kid when you're older. A lot of the themes you don't really connect with as a kid because you've experienced so little at that time suddenly mean a hell of a lot more to you later in life as those themes become more and more relatable. I legit shed a tear at the end of the game which really wasn't something I expected when I sat down to finally beat it for the first time.
"The laughing scene in ffx is one of the best moments" THANK YOU. I have always hated seeing people take that scene out of context and laugh at it, it is one of my favorite scenes in the game.
That tends to happen with alot of moments. Alex Jones, Eminem lyrics, alot mature eated games in the 90s. Even if they're known for the wrong reasons, at least they're known outside of fanbase.
That laugh scene is the equivalent of fate zero's "people die when they are killed" a good scene taken out of context, Tales of symphonia has a very similar story BTW wakka is the same voice as bender from futurama
@@mysticmind4563 to be fair Alex Jones and Eminem lyrics are just as funny in context as they are out, the only difference is the context makes you lose some hope in humanity
Pokémon: Legends Arceus is looking like it has a similar system. Not quite the same, of course, but fairly similar. Though it's not out yet, so who knows?
Pro tip: dont bother worrying about levelling everyone up during the story. Theres plenty options available in the meta game to get insane amounts of levels in a short space of time.
It's been a while since i completed X but shouldn't you keep your party levels near each other? Not like grinding to an extreme amount like you would in the monster arena but just enough. IRRC, the game does split your party up during the story. Like you are kinda screwed if your only strong character is Tidus and you are fighting Evere Altana a weak Wakka and Rikku. Also that Seymore fight on Mount Gigazette. >.
Let me tell you, when I saw the intro cutscene of the destruction of Zanarkand at the blitzball tournament in the intro, It blew my 4 year old mind at how good it looks. Always will be one of my fondest video game memories. (Also To Zanarkand is one of the most beautiful songs ever made imo).
Lil Ronso becomes a little more interesting in the international sphere grid. I ignored his stats and led him on a weird path gaining hastega and dispel earlier than intended. Made a couple Seymour fights significantly easier
I agree, I love it too. The cutscene direction in this game is excellent, I don't care if its technically "wrong" to crossfade all the time. For me in this instance it just works.
@DickVonPounDatSnatch I just imagined a friend of yours having a panic attack, and you going, "just because it's supposed to be bad, doesn't exclude it for being made fun for being bad"
My sister was like that too. My sister and I never got along growing up, and she resents my family for doing everything in the world for her, but we bonded over FFX back in '01. She used to sit in my room for hours to watch me play.
I miss the "perfectly fitting nonsense/10" ratings you used to give, so I'll try it myself......... I give it a "sphere grid/10". It's an absolutely fantastic game, but it requires a large amount of dedication to fully experience it.
"yuna is the main character" is such an iamverydeep take. in the context of the world of spira then on the very surface she is the main character, but at the core tidus is the reason the cycle is broken and its his sacrifice that saves everyone. its not just simply an artistic perspective change, he is the main character. this is driven home especially when he takes the quote back from yuna and says: "i know its selfish, but this is my story"
It was a very edgelord take by him. It's Tidus' story. Even if all he was, was Yuna's guardian and didn't save the world himself and just aided her, it's still his story and his point of view. Add in the fact that Tidus IS the very reason the cycle gets broken, his direct connection to Jecht/Sin, and the fact none of this happens without him, and it's even dumber take.
This kind of battle system, turn-based with a bar for turn orders and different moves affecting it differently is also a staple of the Kiseki series of JRPGs, also known as the Legend of Heroes: Trails (or just Trails), in the west. Mayhaps check it out sometimes? The series really deserves more recognition here in the west.
I think the first one to do it was Grandia back in 2000. I really like the way it's implemented there as a slider bar with character icons that move along it, because a shortcoming of the system is that it is too predictable with static turn order. With character's ATB gauge moving along the same line and the fact that ANY hit will delay action depending on several other factors AND the battlefield is treated like an actual field where it takes time to close distance before and after an attack, it makes it much less formulaic and always has you asking yourself, "Will this hit hard enough to give another party member a turn before we get smacked again?" and praying that your distance estimation on the time slider is on point. The only downside was the movement was AI controlled which could get a bit wonky, but I still feel it's the best implementation of such a system...
CBT has found its way to alot of modern games now. Games like Neptunia, Octopath Traveller, Digimon rpg, SMT Devil Survivor, and many more used it. Its so common infact that by the time Octopath came out, it felt a bit outdated cause everyone else had tried new things with it now.
This got me to start replaying FFX and I found that the game was a lot brisker then I remember. I'm already at calm lands which previously felt super far into the game, which I suppose is a testament for how memorable these locations are. Thunder plains is only like 3 zones, but its become almost iconic, and I could name every location after 10 years without playing it.
I swear I remember not reaching the High Planes for dozens of hours when I was little. And then I replayed the game last year and I realized it had only been, like, 15 hours.
the game is always pushing you forward all the time...until you get the airship. it has to be most accessible game in the entire series. i feel like anybody can get through it if you put the time in it. but at the same time, it isn't an easy game. there are times the game will hand you your ass if you don't pay attention. my only gripe with the game today (and Square dropped the ball heavily) was redoing the voiceover. at least sync the voiceovers. they could have done that for the remaster. hated when they changed the soundtrack. this is the reason i never play the PS3 version
I get that feeling whenever I play games I played as a child. I remember locations from FF7 and FFX (specifically) seeming to take days when I was younger, and now they're over in about an hour.
Tidus is deffs the main character. He follows the Hero's Journey. Yuna is practically the wizard element and the catalyst for him to confront the lie he tells himself about hating his father. She's the Gandalf to Tidus's Frodo. imo
I never understood the issue with the laugh scene. I always, even as a kid, knew the context. They are living in a dark and gloomy world, the constant cloud of enviable death is permanently there. They are faking a laugh like how people fake a smile. Do it long enough and you might actually laugh/smile genuinely. It's SUPPOSED to be bad. They are forcing out these dorky laughs, and eventually they laugh for real cause it helps relieve some of the anxiety and pain they are suffering with. I love that scene. And FYI it's just as "bad" in the Japanese sub too lol
Its "bad" because people use it to attack the game, aimed at people who never played it. If you don't know the context of the season, you only see the cringey delivery.
There's an argument to be made that something being bad on purpose doesn't make it not bad. That said, it's a tiny scene in a massive game so anyone who actually uses it to speak about the game as a whole is wrong off the bat.
@@ItsmeInternetStranger that’s an argument that can’t be made with this scene though. It’s not some “so bad it’s good” movie. The scene is literally forcing themselves to laugh to help get through tough times. If it sounds bad or “cringey” that means the VAs did a good job with their delivery. Whether or not you LIKE the scene is a separate matter.
@@thaxsom Like, if I annoy you, and I'm trying to be annoying, does that make me not annoying? The scene is trying to be uncomfortable to watch. It succeeds. It's uncomfortable to watch. There's a reason they made it that way, and that's fine, but that doesn't change that the scene is uncomfortable to watch.
According to James Arnold Taylor (Tidus voice actor), he said the laughing scene was suppose to sound like that. It’s suppose to be a forced laugh and that’s what he did.
When you started making these I hadn't played any final fantasy, now I've played them all and this is the first video in the series I'm watching after beating the game lol
Thank you for defending the laughing scene, nobody understands it and it drives me crazy. I felt like it was the first scene where they start to fall in love with each other, despite being literal worlds apart, they have this deep connection and understanding with each other.
@@ralphiecifaretto8961 It's not supposed to be "a pleasure" to watch, unless you're the kind of person who derives pleasure from watching people suffer.
You’ve really outdone yourself. Not only have you dissected and interpreted the story and characters masterfully, you injected more warmth and admiration into your analysis than in any other review besides FFs 1 and 6. You nailed it sir. Keep up the good work.
"To Zanarkand" has been used so much as a sad meme song that I almost didn't notice it was being used over the intro because, you know, it's the intro piece.
The laughing scene explanation is basically my explanation on the "Who else will I have Ice cream with?" Line from Kingdom Heart Days. Context is important, and it's a powerful line if you know what that means to the characters. Out of context it's silly, but in context, it hits you right in the feels.
It's still kind of funny that a year of friendship is purely based around eating ice cream after work. Just imagine a couple of 40 something white collar workers in a similar situation. "Johnny, no! Who am I now gonna be cracking open cold ones with? Also, did you finish the report for this quarter or do I have to do it?" I take it back, that's probably most after work friendships.
YES, THANK YOU! Like, this moment being meme'd, or used as an example of how the VA quality has aged poorly, just infuriates me! It's SUPPOSED to sound awkward and stilted because it's two young people in a terrible situation just trying to cope, and coping by making fun of the trope of forcibly showing strength or joy past the point of sense in the face of intense bleakness and adversity (which pretty readily describes Spira as a whole, frankly) so no one worries about you. It's a clever deconstruction of an age-old character trait, that Yuna then flips the script on AGAIN right after by encouraging a more genuine alternative.
@@Edagui97 I think you're still removing a lot of the context from Roxas and Xion's friendship (and their friendship w/ Axel) by just reducing it down to "after work friends", as they're not exactly in a comparable and casual situation to what we would experience irl w/ our own after work friends, but....whatever floats your boat, I guess.
I remember watching a behind the scenes interview with the voice actor for Tidus. He pronounced his name as Teedus and my brain, in denial, thought "He pronounced his own characters name wrong".
Final Fantasy X is my absolute favorite. It used to be VII when I was younger, but now, the personal story of Tidus and Yuna just tugs on my hearstrings every time. Add on all the great points ProJ mentioned (plus that opening piano song, "To Zanarkand", which is literal perfection), and I just can't praise it enough. Plus, the fact that I enjoyed blitzball didn't hurt either XD.
@@xipetotek8216 I'd say give it a whirl on a fresh playthrough and eke it thru the beginning bit and it should grip you. If you've done wakkas stuff with Blitz already, then it's still offers nice rewards for a fresh run from my experience (like return spheres and wakka's attack reels)
I never thought I’d say this, but the laughing scene this time around legit made me tear up. I even knew the context going in, but the way you put it into words was truly well done.
Thank you for addressing the laughing scene. As much as that scene has become a bit of a meme, it's nice to see someone point out how brilliant that scene actually is. Also in the Japanese version, Tidus' laugh sounds like a crow cawing.
The expert sphere grid actually makes Kimahri decently useful in the beginning of the game. Being able to make him a second string version of almost everyone at the same time is super useful. For my most recent run I gave him the first 2 levels of black magic spells, the cure/esuna/cura/life, haste/slow, most of the breaks, steal/use, etc.
Thank you for talking about the "meme scene" it gets dunked on so much out of context but in context it's the scene that makes you actually care about them as a couple. On the subject of good voice delivery, I was always fond of the "secret reveal" scene in the Al Bhed Home. It was the first time that I can remember that a video game made me cry. And the delivery of Tidus asking the pointed questions about guardians keeping summoners safe still gives me chills, because you can feel guilt everyone else shares of not wanting to tell him that.
In defense of Kimahri, you get to make interesting choices in his sphere grid from the start, whereas everyone else's is pretty linear for 80 percent of the game
Kimahri is essentially the Blue Mage with his sphere grid right smack dab in the center. This allows him to be another unit that is a reasonable substitute for any of the other party members that you choose him to be. I made him my second LuLu just because it seemed practical at the time and helped with his solo boss fight against his Ronso rivals.
yeah, when he said Kimahri wasn't as useful as the other party members. Like you can make him whatever you feel like in that run your doing of the game, especially with the expert sphere grid. Though he can absorb skills from monsters to use as his overdrive, i found most of them kind underwhelming in power.
The problem is you don't need a second Tidus or Auron or Yuna etc. The battle system is built around you oneshotting every enemy with the right character. There is really no need for a spare.
The fact that Jared referenced LOTR: The Third Age makes me unreasonably happy. I admit I'm biased as hell due to being a LOTR geek, but I freakin love that game and felt like nobody remembered it.
I've just come to the end of an FFX play-through and just picked up LOTR TTA after watching this, not touched it since I was very young and never finished it!
I absolutely love that game, remember playing it when i was little and never defeated the 2 mumakils at the end of the game until a lot of years later when I replayed the game
No, we bash it because it went too far, lasted too long, and forces the two together in a horribly unsatisfying way. We all get what it's supposed to show us - we still hate it. Stop explaining it to us as if we didn't get it or will suddenly start enjoying it 20 years later. It is awful and always will be. We deserve better than what they did to us there.
@@CrashSable A bit overkill but, yeah making intentional awkward moments especially dragged out one is still off putting. It can be taken with a grain of salt, but it's not gonna be recieved nicely.

Seymour is also a good villian as his mother gave up herself to be his Aeon to help her son, but in the end he didnt need an aeon he needed his mom. Even she admits that was her mistake when you get her aeon. It is an interesting aspect to the world
tf he is? he was utterly pointless to the story, he has no menace especially since you kick his ass 3 or 4 times throughout the game, and his mere existence ruins the concept of death in Spira
@@557deadpool Seymour is threatening because he's insane, yet charismatic and highly regarded by all of Spira. Seymour was apparently an excellent teacher, someone who didn't ride the coattails of his family, and was a highly gifted mage from childhood. Seymour's solution for "easing the pain of Spira" and ending the cycle of violence is to obliterate all life, and he's so charismatic that he might've been able to usurp all power in Bevelle and convince the world it was a good idea. He was such a manipulator that even Tidus buys into his "pretend you didn't see/ hear it" line, which is completely the opposite of how Tidus behaves the entire game. Especially since the people are already too brainwashed into their religion to criticize their leaders. But here's the thing, even if i agreed with what you say, she's still not threatening to any fucking degree. His plan is absolutely asinine (say what you will about Thanos, at least his insane plan was somewhat understandable especially when you consider his past), he literally doesn't do anything of note besides maybe destroy the Ronso which he still fails at, you effortlessly kick his ass in every single fight (which is the biggest issue), and his existence basically makes death meaningless since it's not nearly as bad as people think. In comparison, Sephiroth is also famous as being the greatest Soldier in the world. He's also done more to warrant him being a threat. He kills President Shinra, we see his strength when they show what he did to the Zolom, he fucks with the cast and gets away multiple times, kills a main character, takes over Cloud's mind to get the Black Materia, almost killed Tifa and Zack, destroyed Nibelheim, and i could go on and on. Mind you, I don't like Sephiroth either but he's a much better villain overall than Seymour who's as threatening as Dr. fucking Wily.
“Once you get to the end you just want to keep playing” - exactly why I’ve never “beaten” this game. I play up until the final save sphere, grind until I’m bored and then set the game aside until I’m ready to start it all over again…..which now that I say it seems incredibly ironic given FFX’s story and me literally not letting the dream of the Fayth end for myself
I've done this for not only both red dead, but I do so in gta, just time traveling to different periods in that particular character's life. In red dead, I hear a lot of people do this, but there are many instances in games I'm sure.
"Every action is fast" Ooooh boy, give a try to the european PAL version having auto haste on all party members was essentialy just playing normally on NTSC. Great review Jared, loved it :3
Projared I disagree. Each of the characters go through growth throughout the game not just Wakka. Tidus comes to terms with his relationship of his abusive father Lulu learns to open up more to her friends And not shut them away. Riku expands her closed off broken family by interacting with Yuna. Kimahri learns that he's had honor and pride within himself the whole time. Auron keeps his promise to Braska And Yuna learns to be her own voice outside her father's shadow.
I also disagree with his statement that tidus isn't the main character. Yuna is the most important figure in the plot but when stuff happens it's tidus who is heading the charge.
@@windwaker0rules Taking an active role doesn't make you a protagonist (the main character). The protagonist is the character that the story is centered around. Which is Yuna. Basically all the events correlate directly with Yuna's summoner journey, the entire plot is kicked off by her journey, and the events that unfold and the information that is revealed is done so because of Yuna's journey. Tidus is, as Jared said, along for the ride.
@@Rasea611 but we see the story through the eyes of tidus every event in the game has his involvement with two very small exceptions. If character that most people talk about and the leader was protagonist it would be Yuna but tidus is the one we see all the events through and most of the beats in the plot are made by tidus. And the goal of tidus is to protect Yuna and unlock the secrets of sin which happens to coenside with yunas pilgrimage
@@windwaker0rules Protagonist =/= main character. He said Tidus was the main character and that Yuna was the protagonist. Tidus is the perspective of the audience. Yuna is the protagonist of the story, but Tidus is the audience of that story.
I remember my best friend being extremely frustrated by the lightning strike thing. He had OCD so it was really hard for him to not 100% the game. I offered to give it a shot and managed to do it for him, and I became his hero. This is bittersweet for me because he passed years ago.
Same. I was butthurt when I clicked on my brother’s save file and he had Anima and Yojimbo and I didn’t. Then again I was 8 lol this game was tough at the time
The whole meme with Tidus laughing is so stupid to me. That part is meant to be silly to make Yuna feel better. I never understood why the internet focuses so much on that when there are so many other stupid parts in the game. Like when he attempts to start "eating" on the Al Bhed ship.
I think you’re missing the point. The voice acting in FFX is bad and that scene just gets used as the “case in point” demonstration of how bad it is. Nobody is not understanding the MEANING of the scene. It’s like “Jill: the master of unlocking”. There is probably a way a good voice actor could have said that line and it wouldn’t be a travesty. But what we got become comedy gold because of how bad it is.
@@JazGalaxy One problem with that: The voice acting is great. You are comparing RE1 voice acting to FFX. There is no comparison. I never once heard anyone complain about the voice acting personally or on UA-cam until apparently now from you.
@@JazGalaxy i think its u who is missing the point. Played FFX twice and im pretty sure voice acting is the last thing im goong to complain about this game. You, like everyone else, based the overall VA with that scene alone. Stop pretending u know how the voice actong overall and play the game.
@@JazGalaxy You are the one missing the point, I am afraid. The voice acting in this game is totally fine. That part sounds cringey because it is *meant* to sound cringey. The issue is that the scene is regularly used to give people (seemingly like you!) the impression that the games voice acting is bad when it's just not.
Been playing this game since 2003, every 2yrs or so I boot this game and play through the endgame contents (dark aeons and arena) and replace all spheres with +4 spheres including luck. Watching this video makes me want to play it again this year!
I really want to see one of these on Tales of Symphonia, it's so good! I bring it up here because it's a similar plot hook where you, the player, are following the protagonist on her journey to restore life to the world, simply because you wouldn't have it any other way. I love stories where you're the support character helping your friend.
Blitzball was super fun for what it is, I've made several files just to have different Blitzball teams and gotten several teams to lvl 90+ each lol, definitely one of the better Final Fantasy mini games. I feel like you glossed over the skill system a bit, you can pre plan your players skillset to work against the enemy team. If they have low hp, you can stack drain tackles on your blockers, if they have low endurance stats(so you know they'll try to pass rather than break through), use your defenders with high block. There's a lot more to it once you get into it. Plus the League rewards are SUPER good for progression, lots of very rare items.
When I learned how to play blitzball, I figured out that Ronso players are bottom tier because they are the slowest and speed is a defining factor in blitzing. Whenever I played against the Fangs, I was like "K, easy win." The Guado and Al Bhed teams however made me sweat.
My second time playing through this game was fairly recently. I wasn't the biggest fan on playing it when it first came out, but on my replay of it, I was much older and able to see and appreciate a lot of the nuances in the story and characters. One thing that particularly struck me was Tidus' idealized memories of his mom vs his bitter memories of his dad, Jecht. He always viewed Jecht as cold and uncaring, while viewing his mom as more favorably...but his memories and flashbacks show that his mom was borderline negligent of him. After he disappeared, his mom couldn't even continue on knowing that she had a child to tend to. However, even while he was in Spira, Jecht thought about Tidus and missed him a lot. That hit me in the feels hard, and it hurts.
I think that's what makes the Jecht scene before the fight at the end so good, because both Tidus and Jecht are finally on the same page and can reconcile but time isn't on either side. Not to mention they know this won't end well. It's honestly one of the few boss fights I didn't want to win what with all the emotional baggage that needed sorting out.
Suteki Da Ne is one of my favorite pieces off music ever. I especially love all the different variations in X-2 as well. God Uematsu is a genius and such a cornerstone of my own musicianship. Great video as always Jared!
I unironically love this game. It's my favorite in the series even. It ain't perfect, hell no game is, but it's a time capsule and is full of some of my favorite stuff in the series.
I'm 10 hours into replaying it and honestly, been greatly enjoying it. Except for Blitzball, fuck that. And yes I won that first match for my boy Wakka.
dude the fadeouts KILLED ME. Funnily enough i was already laughing at the first one of yours because it was just an absurd editing choice but then that stuff got really meta.
Dude “To Zanarkand” has got to be the SONG for this game and IMO, the greatest piece of video game music ever composed. This entire game is wonderfully composed. Thank you Jared for injecting this nostalgic heroine right into my eyeballs and then into my heart.
Jarad: the battle system is great and I’m surprised nobody has used it again. Er... I guess this video was finished before Sakaguchi’s Fantasian came out
Such good music. I spent so much time learning to play them all on the piano. Never got all of them, but most, extremely butchered versions, but love the music so much in this one.
This video really took me back to a different time in my life. Final Fantasy 10 isn’t my favorite FF but it stuck with me more then any other game in the series. I think it was the first game I got emotionally tied up in. It definitely shaped some parts of me.
What I always loved about Tidus' role in the story is that he's there to provide an outsider, neutral perspective to the characters as somebody who wasn't raised on the Yevon religion, but also didn't grow up hating it like the Al Bhed did. He doesn't look down on anybody for following a religion. He's instead curious, and asks genuine good faith questions that not only serve to educate him, but also make Yuna go "Huh, you know, I never thought about that until you put it that way." It's a really interesting take on the typical religious tropes that you see in most JRPGs.
Another really cool thing about FFX"s battle system is that levelling up is optional since the game doesn't force you to use the Sphere Grid past the tutorial, meaning that you can do the equivalent of Level 1 runs. In the FFX community these are called No Sphere Grid runs (NSG for short) and they are incredibly fascinating to watch, as unlike games like Kingdom Hearts where they properly scale the difficulty of the game to Level 1 as it's an intended mechanic, FFX doesn't, so they require an incredible understanding of the game to successfully pull off.
Blitzball is 100% controllable you just have to switch from Auto to manual and you can control them all. Very weird Jared didnt do the research to figure that out
One 2 hour stream of Blitzball is not nearly enough. There’s enough there for a game of its own… But I respect Jared even giving it that much, dude is busy.
I'm a video editor, when you did that still frame cross fade I was like "Why would he use that transition?" And them BAM you hit me with it. IT ALWAYS BUGGED ME! You've awoken a demon from it's slumber.
I haven't gotten around to 10 yet but I did 100% 13 and I hear a lot of people descirbe the crystarium system as basically a massively simplified version of the sphere grid. The basic idea of each character starting off with a specialization that can later be made into essentially an Omni Tool that does everything well later on I.E. end and post game seems to be the same just with a lot of the extra steps removed and much more linear.

I'm surprised you didn't go into Tidus's relationship with Jecht as the game progresses. It's a big part of his character, and the ways his travels help him grow and reach a place where he can at least face his father instead of blindly hating him... it was really something.
I'm surprised he didn't rail about how you HAVE to level khimari or you get soft locked into grinding halfway through the game.
Was a major reveal when Tidus faced facts on the Farplane and realized he blamed Jecht for his mother's lack of attention and love. Having 2 characters with esuna really helps, in case one of them gets hit with a bad breath or something.
Good one Viola. But I couldn’t remember what part I used for Kimahri.
rikku's speed and items fills this niche fine.
I honestly always assumed it was "Teedus" cause of my native language which pronounces i like ee
Guess they went with a good name choice since it works on two different levels: one more metaphorical and one more immediately obvious.
It will always be "Tie-dus" to me, just sounds cooler for an otherwise uncool character.
"The laughing is forced and cringey... *because it's supposed to be.* "
THANK YOU.
So if it's supposed to be why do people get so uptight when you call the scene those exact things?
@@jermainezinnerman7450
Because that's not the argument.
Fox's voice double who's also done work for Disney and been Ratchet's voice ever since the first Ratchet and Clank game) can't act to save his life.

@@handsomedubbledee I played the game in PS3 and I didn't find it odd, I wonder if they resynced the voice overs there.
I will never stop laughing that Seymour's final plan is, in essence, "I will become sin and kill everyone to stop sin from killing everyone."
of all the things mass effect 3 could have taken from this game...
The best thing about Seymour is that he isn't even the final boss and becomes more of a nuisance (like team rocket from pokemon) than anything, and that his final fight is after the endgame weapons become available. I killed that mf in two hits lmaooo, actin like he ain't just fodder at that point
That's because Seymour was lying. Obviously. He just wanted an excuse to kill everyone.
@@darkpyro786 I remember I got grind happy in the omega ruins and I one shot Seymour's final form... With Rikku. She had maxed strength.
Wakka you bring up in the video, but he learns that blindly following religion solves nothing and learns to accept chappus death as well as get over his hatred of al bhed
Auron changes the least outside of our perception of him as we learn his motives.

You know what you’re doing 👍
I took riku down tiedus. Speed all those speed nodes !!!so stupid fast.
The people who mock this scene know this but they make fun of it anyway
Tidus was acting a bit immaturely but Yuna also put him on the spot. She'd had a lot of practice smiling in the face of sorrow, and while her advice isn't _bad_ it's a lot to ask from someone who's just learned his father has turned into a mass-murdering beast. So Tidus takes the piss out of Yuna by forcing out the most unnatural laugh. And doesn't stop even when asked. :D I think his voice actor does a great job too - you can hear the frustration and tension slowly relieve while he's screwing around with the stupid laugh. Yuna's advice worked! :)
@@RikiJasmin Just because it supposed to be bad doesn't exclude it from actually being bad.

Agreed, never understood the hate for it. It was supposed to be like that. The voice actors knew that.

"Ihateyou."
"I know, son."
Fun fact: All these weird jarring things aren't present in the PAL version. I was super confused when he brought up the freeze-frame cuts and the speed-ups in the audio.

"The laughing scene in ffx is one of the best moments"
THANK YOU.
Especially since Tidus and Yuna start laughning normally right after that scene.
Even the context of attempting to make a stupid sounding laugh would not make it any less embarrassingly terrible.

Hot take: The cross fading in the cutscenes is my favorite part of the presentation and gives the world a dreamy, ethereal feel.
Ya I always took it as a representation of a photographic memory. Since the whole game, and most the characters are just that.

Nice that someone can take a stupid song and make it work in comedy.
Well said. I always say the same thing.
I was thinking about this too. 👍
It can also be seen in Heroes of Might and Magic series since 90's
CBT has found its way to alot of modern games now. Games like Neptunia, Octopath Traveller, Digimon rpg, SMT Devil Survivor, and many more used it. Its so common infact that by the time Octopath came out, it felt a bit outdated cause everyone else had tried new things with it now.
@@Caidren That's a lie lol
This got me to start replaying FFX and I found that the game was a lot brisker then I remember. I'm already at calm lands which previously felt super far into the game, which I suppose is a testament for how memorable these locations are. Thunder plains is only like 3 zones, but its become almost iconic, and I could name every location after 10 years without playing it.
I swear I remember not reaching the High Planes for dozens of hours when I was little. And then I replayed the game last year and I realized it had only been, like, 15 hours.
You ever wonder if Tidus actually loves Yuna? Or is he a summon and she's a summoner? Could he even tell her no?
the game is always pushing you forward all the time...until you get the airship. it has to be most accessible game in the entire series. i feel like anybody can get through it if you put the time in it. but at the same time, it isn't an easy game. there are times the game will hand you your ass if you don't pay attention. my only gripe with the game today (and Square dropped the ball heavily) was redoing the voiceover. at least sync the voiceovers. they could have done that for the remaster. hated when they changed the soundtrack. this is the reason i never play the PS3 version

She's the Gandalf to Tidus's Frodo. imo
This was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and knowing we got to see your view of Tidus story is something I live for.
You mean Yuna's story
Also, did you finish the report for this quarter or do I have to do it?"
I take it back, that's probably most after work friendships.
Someone else who appreciates the ice cream line! That cutscene wrecked me.
Out of all awkward KH dialoques, that is propably one of the best lines while having that KH-flair on it.

You turned him into the ultimate support character, able to keep the rest of the party going while laying some smack down when everything is peachy.
Sucks that expert grid wasn't in the OG release, cause it was a really cool idea
I don't think "Which character do I want Kimahri to be a worse version of?" is an interesting question haha.
Ultima by thunder plains if played smart
The problem is you don't need a second Tidus or Auron or Yuna etc. The battle system is built around you oneshotting every enemy with the right character. There is really no need for a spare.

Did he made them?
I unironically love this game. It's my favorite in the series even.
It ain't perfect, hell no game is, but it's a time capsule and is full of some of my favorite stuff in the series.
I'm 10 hours into replaying it and honestly, been greatly enjoying it. Except for Blitzball, fuck that. And yes I won that first match for my boy Wakka.
get rid of the word unironic
dude the fadeouts KILLED ME. Funnily enough i was already laughing at the first one of yours because it was just an absurd editing choice but then that stuff got really meta.
THANK YOU! Finally a content creator that actually gets the laugh scene. It's always been great!
Dude “To Zanarkand” has got to be the SONG for this game and IMO, the greatest piece of video game music ever composed. This entire game is wonderfully composed. Thank you Jared for injecting this nostalgic heroine right into my eyeballs and then into my heart.
"Your going to notice it all the time"
Goes back and see's he did that transition from the start
I noticed him doing it twice after he mentioned it, then I sorta forgot about it
oh wow, he did too. I did notice it after he said it but not before
Loved how you made your transitions from Jared-to the game with the same transitions as in the cutscenes
Jarad: the battle system is great and I’m surprised nobody has used it again.
Er... I guess this video was finished before Sakaguchi’s Fantasian came out
What i'm finding strange is that Monster Sanctuary (a game he played) "kinda" used this system too to an extent.
Pokemon Legends Arceus is also using the turn system in its own way, I was pleasantly surprised
Lost Odyssey used the system too and I know he's played that so it's odd that it didn't get mentioned.
Worth the wait. This has definitely got me into the mood to re-play it. Well done Jared.

To get the crossfade of ProJared's stare is something I will NEVER forget.
@@anarchisedlute3463 NES Speedrunners: Are we a joke to you?
My first FF and still one of the best ones, questionable voice acting be damned
Its version of the prelude track also still goes hard to this day
Dat prelude is poppin'
It was way ahead of most PS1 voice acting with just some questionable parts.
The acting hasn't aged all that well, but for the time it was made, this was actually pretty good, certainly above average.
@@Invidente7 Honestly back then there were basically no industry standards for English voice acting outside Metal Gear Solid anyway
@@icedcapplord710 Metal Gear!?
I was *not ready* for the song at 15:51 😂
Love that it was also the closing remark hahahaha.
15:51 Ok Jared, this earns you the highest possible order of respect in my book.
Blitzball is 100% controllable you just have to switch from Auto to manual and you can control them all. Very weird Jared didnt do the research to figure that out
Even when controlled manually it was a boring mess though.
@mortimer Zabi I believe he meant auto formations.
One 2 hour stream of Blitzball is not nearly enough. There’s enough there for a game of its own…
But I respect Jared even giving it that much, dude is busy.
Still you could only control them on attack, not on defense (which he points out)
You can control characters on defense
By far one of the greatest games I’ve ever played and the first game to make me cry, never forget this game🥲
I'm a video editor, when you did that still frame cross fade I was like "Why would he use that transition?" And them BAM you hit me with it. IT ALWAYS BUGGED ME! You've awoken a demon from it's slumber.
First time I felt like crying at a game's ending. I say the voice acting really changed the emotional involvement of FF storytelling.
"I'm surprised the sphere grid hasn't been used in any modern games"
path of exile would like to have a word with you
When I played PoE, I was shocked when I saw that. I said it's the sphere grid to my friends and they looked at me funny.
I guess he means that it is not as common as he would expect it to be.
@@ReikuYin PoE progressive system has taken both sphere grid from FFX and materia from FFVII
Salt and Sanctuary has a version of it too
I haven't gotten around to 10 yet but I did 100% 13 and I hear a lot of people descirbe the crystarium system as basically a massively simplified version of the sphere grid. The basic idea of each character starting off with a specialization that can later be made into essentially an Omni Tool that does everything well later on I.E. end and post game seems to be the same just with a lot of the extra steps removed and much more linear.
"Except for Kimahri"
Basically summed up the whole game right there.
So basically, "Kimahri can get the fuck out of my party"?
@@Other_Kev I'm doing a 100% run right now, I'm about to enter the omega ruins, and Kimahri is at the center of the sphere grid still...
