Sometimes Epiphones are very very nicely constructed guitars, and usually all it takes is a good setup to make them really great instruments that will be as good as any well set up Gibson out there. A good guitar is a good guitar.
Just got up this morning, got my self a coffee, opening YT to see some stuff, opening this video - "Diary of a Madman" starts - what a way to start a day. Fuckin A
Theres something very special about these mid 00s epiphones! I have a white LP Custom from 05 as well and it plays better than ANY Gibson standard ive owned
I picked up a standard for £150.. None of the electronics were original xD but I since fixed the shoddy wiring job and put some real good pups in.. These Epis are bad ass and the Custom in black and gold is my dream guitar at the moment...
Diary of a Madman very well played! I recently posted the acoustic intro played on my Tanglewood on Facebook & Instagram but you smashed the whole tune! I've got some work to do on that one...
Good job on that Ozzy tune. At first, I was thinking that it is interesting that you obviously spent a lot of time listening to and learning that Randy Rhoads tune. Then I thought, oh yeah, that was Ozzy! We kinda have Ozzy on loan from you guys in England. LOL! Just kind of shows you how close our two countries are in so many ways....even in popular music. I think that is pretty cool.
Dammit....i saw a silver burst today while at the local gs. Im going back tomorrow to get it. Gotta say im just over a year in playing...i love your passion for guitar, amazing skill. My only regret is not learning to play guitar earlier...any advice for a new player that you wish u recieved?
Nice to see my favourite brand in the hands of a master.I have 2015 Standard Goldtop and 2015 Vintage SG both Indonesian made and they are perfect.I am a tech and I work on expensive guitars all the time.No way am I going to drop 10 times the price on a Gibson.I haven't seen any Chinese Epis yet but I'm sure I will soon enough. Can't think why they built a huge plant in China when the Indonesian ones are almost perfect? How many pennies can they save on labour to make it worthwhile moving to a massive new Gigafactory? All I did was change out the guillotine saddle Tuneomatics for Rollers and fitted Tusq nuts.Anyhoo that was a fantastic demo of one of my favourite toons, and I agree it's a tricky bastard but you gotta have goals!Great demo Dave.Cheers.
I have one like your, but 2004, and i just boot 2 Gibson's Burstbucker Pro for her! I think it's just perfect for this model/year/woods (body and top of mahogany)!!
Was that 'Rooster' by Alice in Chains that you started playing at 4:50? Absolutely love your videos man :D. I've had my Epiphone Les Paul Custom since 2011 and haven't looked back since, she's my world haha. Always nice to see others saying great things about these wonderful guitars :).
Nice guitar and nice playing-I so wish they would put the gibson shaped head stock on the epiphone.-I think they don't because they think people would buy more epiphones and less gibsons. It may sound weird, but I will not buy one until they do.I can't afford a gibson and I am sure they would go up on the price of epiphone if they did go back to the gibson shape.Just me, I guess.
If you get the opportunity, try and get your hands on a GrassRoots les paul, I've got one, made in Korea. They're made for the Japanese market basically by ESP, but they do more classical-looking models, they're basically perfect copies of the Gibsons. The ESP quality equivalent would be the Edwards range, and LTD stuff is GrassRoots, the guitars are absolutely fantastic, sound absolutely fantastic (look great too!), and they're not that expensive, mine cost a bit less than the Epi Custom, and (at least to me) it's better. It feels better, the binding is nicer, sort of feels more expensive, to put it short. Thing is, they don't exactly sell them in the states, because surprise surprise - lawsuit! I've had mine for over ten years now, and it's a damn trooper, not once let me down, neck is straight, frets are pretty tough (oh and it has the Gibson headstock). Anyhow, if You're curious about them hit me up, I wont give Ya a dealer that ships, but can give feedback info on the instrument. Cheers
The AVT 150 head is awesome and i want one to. I have played through a few and i have always loved them. Well. Apart from the acoustic channel. thats not great. But the others are awesome. Highly recommend them. :)
Another GREAT video! Yor playing is inspiring! And i also have an Epi Les Paul that i think is pretty sweet. How do you think yours compares to the Gibson ? Thanks and keep rockin
great vid dave love the custom les paul I have the exact same one but it's a 2004 made in unsung factory korea, picked it up for £120 from ebay love it ! And I agree that the pick ups can get a bit too muddy though thinking of swapping them out for some tesla sharks from iron gear.
Depends on if its brand new or not. If its second hand its a bit pricey. Also goes on condition of the guitar. You can very easily play metal on an epi. :)

OMG dude first my hoodie now you got my guitar too WTF LOL JK. Seriously though isn't that the custom pro? The dressed to kill model with the gold hardware and coil splitting and phase switching. I picked mine up used for 300 and it had some buzz had to level the frets and recrown just finished and it sounds great.
I got a 93 just like it but it suffered a cracked neck near the headstock, breaks my heart it's in the case afraid of the diagnosis. I've had it since it was new so would be worth the repair if it's possible. anyway cool vid as always. love the RR homage..
Have you ever tried any of the 70s Japanese law suit guitars? I picked up a Matsumoku Les Paul custom for $170 and it's awesome. I feel like its something you'd be into.
I own the Pro version of this Epi. I bought it mainly because it looks, to me, absolutely awesome. But it plays like a, er, well, it is very nice.
I have a korean made one that turned 20 years old this year! AWESOME playing and sounding guitar! To this day it is still ALL original. NICE
I dig this cause this guy digs guitar and I dig that

Very very true. :)
Now THAT is my ideal bedroom amp rig!
Fantastic tone. I'm seriously considering getting the Epiphone black beauty: the 3 pickup version of the Les Paul custom. You sounded great Dave.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
I have that said guitar, get one mine plays great, sounds amazing, feels great and looks a million dollars, you will not regret buying one, good luck.
just bought one :) my fingers are craving for it all day!! can't stop staring at it. it's just a really gorgeous guitar.. :) great review :)

Thank you and thanks for watching. :)
With the bluesy music you usually play, it is easy to forget that you can metal it up too Dave. Good playing man.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Dave Simpson Your Epiphone sounds amazing 👍👍👍👍
OMG, one of my favorite Ozzy songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just bought 2004 Epiphone Les Paul Custom because of you after CR120 :)
:)

Thank you very much and my advice is learn what you want and forget anyone that says otherwise. Also learn songs in full. : )

Awesome guitar, awesome player. Great stuff!
Thank you very much. :)
I have a Epiphone silver-trimmed 2004 Les Paul. I use a Peavey 158 Rage amp, sounds great. The Les Paul weighs in around 9 plus pounds.
Always good stuff Dave!

Hey Dave great video as always!! I just had one question to ask which is, if you have a limited budget, would you go for better guitar or better amp?
Thank you very much indeed and i would go for a better amp. :)
Thanks Dave!
loved the Oasis at the end. More please:)
Thank you very much. :)
didn't even notice the red dwarf shirt until my 2nd viewing!
How well does it do the "out of phase" tone? That would probably be my main reason for buying it.
Mick Ronson had a Black Custom during the Ziggy Years.
Indeed he did. :)
Rock on!!!

You could get one of those japanese domestic market or elitist versions some of them had gibson style shape. Check ebay and craigslist.
i actually prefer epiphone's headstock, it looks like a modern take on the same idea

The Japanese models have the Gibson headstock.
Why not buy a Tokai then? Or a Vintage?
Ever tried the Marshall AVT valvestates Dave? I am thinking of getting one, possibly a 150 head , I would be interested in your opinion.
The AVT 150 head is awesome and i want one to. I have played through a few and i have always loved them. Well. Apart from the acoustic channel. thats not great. But the others are awesome. Highly recommend them. :)
Just waiting to sell my ic400 copycat on ebay to see how my finances are, AVT 100 is probably a contender also, I assume will be as good.
Good guitar and well played.
Thank you very much. :)
I have the same guitar and am just messing around don't know how to play anything yet but wow that sounds great.
Another GREAT video! Yor playing is inspiring! And i also have an Epi Les Paul that i think is pretty sweet. How do you think yours compares to the Gibson ? Thanks and keep rockin
Thank you very much indeed and i would happily put this up against a gibson any day. :)
great vid dave love the custom les paul I have the exact same one but it's a 2004 made in unsung factory korea, picked it up for £120 from ebay love it ! And I agree that the pick ups

Thank you very much indeed for watching. :)
The sustain on pretty vacant, brilliant, thank you
Thank you very much indeed. : )
Dave the Ace. 🤗
Thank in you. :)
I've heard you get better tone and longer sustain from the larger head stocks, cool :)
I loved the Sex Pistols bit you did, great.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
That pro humbunckers are good for pop punk ?
They are yes. : )
@@thedavesimpson
I often use a SeymourDuncan Invader on the bridge. I'm afraid the sound will get worse if I buy this epiphone. Please help me
First time I hate your clean tone. Who knows? Maybe the Les Paul sound is not my thing. Great video as always Dave! :)
Thank you for watching. It wasn't my favourite clean tone either. I'm not a fan of clean Les Pauls. :)
Hi Dave how are you?can you tell me what is the song at 4:44 thanks!great video by the way
Hi there. I am well thank you. How are you? The song i am playing is guns n roses civil war. :)
Dave Simpson I'm not too bad :) thanks for your reply!
I never buy a new guitar if you Haven't done a review for her. Thanx
Thank you. :)
What’s the song at 5:41 ? Awesome playing by the way
Its The Sex Pistols song Pretty Vacant.
Thank you very much. : )
I can get that exact guitar for about $500 is it worth it? What's your opinion on playing metal on the Epiphone?
Depends on if its brand new or not. If its second hand its a bit pricey. Also goes on condition of the guitar. You can very easily play metal on an epi. :)

It's in mint condition basically never played. But if its great for heavy sounds ill buy it. Thanks for the speedy reply, subscribed :)
Hells Bells by AC/DC would sound killer thru that rig. Although much louder ! lol
I agree. Thats my favourite AC/DC song. Annoyed it didn't come to mind now.. :( Thank you for watching. :)
Whta do you think about thius guitar?, Is good for the money?
It is very good for the money. Awesome guitar. : )

Its not the pro no. Its juts a standard Custom. Thank you for watching. :)
was that a bit of pretty vacant!?
It was indeed. :)
awesome!! someone knows the song on the beginning of the video?
Ozzy, Diary of a madman. The first 3 minutes are this song. ;)
mindcrazer thanks so much
I want one!
Me to. :)
hi, is good my friend!!! is korea? china? japan?
I forget sorry. I think it was korean but I'm not sure. Sorry.
Btw, are you related to Rob Loonhouse?
I've played more bad Gibsons than I have bad Epiphones.
Me to. :)
I got a 93 just like it but it suffered a cracked neck near the headstock, breaks my heart it's in the case afraid of the diagnosis. I've had it since it was new so would be worth the repair if it's possible. anyway cool vid as always. love the RR homage..
Not to worry, it can be successfully fixed, just take it to a good luthier, all will be well (as good as new).
Paul Laughton that's encouraging, thanks!
Thank you very much for watching and like Mr Paul Laughton said that is a fairly common repair on a les paul. Should be straight forward. :)
Dave Simpson thanks so much, it's time to get it to the shop. I was in love with the custom for years it's time to rekindle. thanks again! enjoy!
5.11 what is the song of the solo
Parisienne Walkways by Gary Moore. :)
Call me crazy but i prefer epiphone pickups over gibson.... Bought a set for my les paul lol
I'm kind of with you there. I find modern gibson pickups very dark with no real character. :)
Have you ever tried any of the 70s Japanese law suit guitars? I picked up a Matsumoku Les Paul custom for $170 and it's awesome. I feel like its something you'd be into.
Why does this guy look like he's on the verge of losing his mind?
I'm always close to that. Hahaha. Thank you for watching. : )
do lesson on john frusciante murderers plz dave
Ka Ka
