For the first year or so, PS2 games in Europe were released with those dark-blue boxes you mentioned as being American PS2 boxes. So games made in 2000 like Gift, were sold with those. If I remember correctly, the bright blue European PS2 boxes started being shipped with games in 2001, but games were still released with dark boxes until the very end of that year. For instance in POrtugal, Jak & Daxter and GTA III, which were released at the end of 2001, still came with dark boxes, but Zone of the Enders (released in March of 2001) came with a bright blue box if I'm not mistaken. In other parts of Europe ZOE was sold with a dark box. So basically, Sony started with dark boxes in Europe but quickly changed to bright ones. 2001 was the year the switch was made and that's why you get games with and without dark boxes. From 2002 onwards, it's all bright blue, platinum silver, and a few orange (Buzz!, Jak & Daxter Lost Frontier), red (Buzz!, Shinobi), white (GT4, Singstar), and black (GT4, God of War 2). Hopefully this makes sense. :) Great video as always, buddy.
It's very nice to see a store that has organised its stock, and presents it very well. It's a good idea to have those display cases. I think most early Playstation 2 games for us were on those black cases before they switched to blue.
We got quite a lot of ps2 games in black cases in the Netherlands. Mostly earlier games, because later on most of the games came in blue cases, but i bought a few games on release in a black case; Zone of the Enders, Half Life, Dynasty warriors 2, Unreal Tournament and Fur fighters: Viggo's revenge. Also most of the GTA games came in black cases. I don't know about other countries, but that's how we got it. But to be honest, when browsing at gamestores or thriftshops i see about 99% blue and grey (platinum series) cases.
Always my favorite store to visit when I'm back home in Blighty as it's always got games you just don't see anywhere else. Nice pick up video sir, subscribed!
Tom is the nicest guy. I went in and picked up a couple of N64 games and he let my kids have a couple of toys for free. Nice guy, I'll get him a coffee next time I can get there
A lot of the early PS2 games in PAL came in black cases (some games like Metal Gear Solid 2 came in a clear case), if look at your copy of Gift you will notice the Playstation 2 logo on the front is slighter smaller compared to Impossible Mission, which is a later release.
I have been avoiding video game stores for years ( and specially in Holland ) because there can't simply deals be made that can be considered awesome. While in forgotten corners of eBay still great deals can be found
Quite a few pal games were released in black cases. Have a few in my collection :) mainly earlier titles. Only one that comes to mind is Tekken Tag Tournament.
100% The Netherlands: assets.catawiki.nl/assets/2016/4/2/b/0/1/b0182196-f908-11e5-81ad-fc97ec16df61.jpg It was also released in Germany: www.konsolenkost.de/gamecube-mario-smash-football-pak-konsole-pearl-white-inkl-mario-smash-football-controller-u-zubehoer-mit-ovp/a-1004612/ Why are you so sure it was a UK exclusive?
I read on a few sites that it was only released in the UK as I wanted to get one myself. I guess I should have done more research. (www.consolecolors.com/nintendo.html Scroll down to Gamecube)
Nes wasn't released in the UK till 1987 and was distributed by Mattel hence why it says Mattel Version until 1990 when Nintendo realised what a shitty job Mattel were doing with the Nes and Nintendo then distributed it themselves later that year and that's why we get the Nes Version which is more common than Mattel it wasn't until the Turtles Bundle in 1990 when sales actually picked up in fact that bundle saved it over here.
European PS2 titles are generally in blue cases but games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among others came in black cases just like Gran Turismo 4 came in a white case.
First gen PS2 games came in dark blue cases I have some of them like Rayman Revolution, Soul Reaver 2, Devil may Cry. Around 2002 they changed the color to light blue. The first time I noticed was when either Vice city or FFX came out. Games with black boxes GTA San Andreas, Splinter Cell and I think God of War II
We have PAL-A and PAL-B regions for NES in Europe. Has nothing to do with the SECAM though. If I'm correct in region B there never was that Mattel version. Show our NES consoles don't have that text on front. And yeah there are few PS2 games in black cases. Our Gran Turismo 3 has a black case and in some places it has red case (I have both) and Gran Turismo 4 has white case for some reason. Hell, I have even orange case in my PS2 collection, some Jak and Daxter game.
Ad can you please consider adding small amounts of gameplay footage of each of your game pickups just continuing to talk over the footage? I appreciate it will add to the work load, capturing footage and that but it would make your pickups videos just that little bit more informative. The Patrion money contributed could justify this extra work. Keep up the good work btw
Impossible Mission is completely unrelated to the movie/TV franchises. I'm going to date myself here, but the original is one of the first games I ever played and was a foundational title for getting me interested in the hobby. Speaking strictly about the original, I'd best describe it as a puzzle platformer. I never beat it because it's difficult in terms of obtaining all the pieces you need to assemble the final puzzle. Said final puzzle is randomized, the pieces can overlap, and when you find them they might be in the wrong orientation. And on top of all of that, you're timed, with a penalty imposed every time you die. So yeah. Good game, but extremely frustrating.
I wish I was as determined as you completing and Original Xbox set and Playstation 2 set.I really don't have the space for all those games so I've been collecting Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance instead.Probably not going for full sets I'm just buying games I'd play on them.
Would love to go to this store but I live near London and its a 2ish hour drive on the M4 (a 'highway' that goes from london to cardiff) Also why is a black PAL PS2 case odd? I have 18 PAL PS2 games and 4 are in black cases with the PAL sticker thingy on them.
Adam, I need to know if an American Original Xbox will run in the UK, and if so, how should I set it up safely? It's the Mountain Dew one, so do not want to fry it. Many thanks
Check the power rating on the system itself. UK uses 50hz/240V, while America uses 110V/60hz. If the system doesn't support universal power and frequency, get a step down converter or else you will fry the system since you're delivering twice the voltage.
Why is their name super tomato is that a homage to the japanese store? You should try to get Age of Empires 2 or Forbidden Siren 2 both PS2 PAL exclusives and actually good games
Ah, Gift by Eko Software. I remember Gift, Woody Woodpecker and Kaan (all for the PS2) have the exact same main menu type with the exact same white font 'n shit, even though the games are quite different. These Eko games are not bad per-se, just a wee-bit bland. And pretty fucking hard sometimes.
I had that turtles handheld when i was a kid, a top gun one and a few more, damn. those things were probably thrown away as trash at some point..... idiot...
Movie Nerd i just paid 60 on ebay for a dc with 2 controllers 4 vmu's 2 rumble packs and 4 games, but yeah a dc is worth thast an xbox not so much. going to pick up a crystal with 2 controllers and 12 games off gumtree tomorrow for 25
I live around the corner from this place. Awesome little shop and the owner is chill af.
I've been to Super Tomato several times and it is amazing and awesome to see a load of retro games from the past.
Early PS2 games mainly came in black cases in Europe as well. It wasn't until 2002 when SCEE started using blue cases.

The first batch of PS2 games at release in Europe generally came in black cases. After a while they switched over to the blue cases :-)

Thanks for the bit longer video, missing your old cleaning and restoring videos, hope they come back
Oh I'm sure they will.

He's a boss.

Quite a few pal games were released in black cases. Have a few in my collection :) mainly earlier titles. Only one that comes to mind is Tekken Tag Tournament.

Been there - nice store, great quality stock - only drawback you won't get a bargain - not expensive - just not cheap.
Omg I've fell in love with this store awesome
That game Gift, has the old ELSPA rating before it went to PEGI, so definitely a PAL cover!
saw that lynx atari brings back my childhood 3ds like carts
Damn if I could teleport to that store like from the movie jumper I would go there so much lol. Wish I had something cool like that here in maine.
The black cases aren't odd. Several games in Europe got released in them ( specially the early ones ).
I bought that castle greyskull for a buck at a yard sale when I was a kid with all the figures. :P STILL GOT IT
Hey Adam,
Mostly all early PS2 games came in a black box instead of the usual blue box.
Someone probably told you but early PAL ps2 games were in black cases. They changes them to blue a while later.
Looks like a great store!
Fuck yeah dude.
Sensible Soccer is an arcadey football game. But the old one on Amiga is so much better than 2006.
The white Gamecube was exclusive to the UK btw.
Nonsense, it came out in The Netherlands as well. It was part of the Mario Smash Football Pak.
Are you sure it wasn't imported from the UK?
100%
The Netherlands: assets.catawiki.nl/assets/2016/4/2/b/0/1/b0182196-f908-11e5-81ad-fc97ec16df61.jpg

All PS2 game cases for the 1st year came in black cases, then in 2002 they changed to blue.
that real england store and part of British gaming empire
Really cool store.
Agreed.
European PS2 titles are generally in blue cases but games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among others came in black cases just like Gran Turismo 4 came in a white case.
Just like Time Crisis 2 and a few others that I have.
+Benva 83 oh and MGS2 and 3 have clear cases 😃

So yeah. Good game, but extremely frustrating.
A sequel was released for the NES in America by SEI and in Australia by HES!
I wish I was as determined as you completing and Original Xbox set and Playstation 2 set.I really don't have the space for all those games so I've been collecting Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance instead.Probably not going for full sets I'm just buying games I'd play on them.
alot of early ps2 games in pal were released in dark blue cases like half Life and devil May cry
most famously GTA San Andreas.

Because the vast majority of PAL cases were blue. Where all ours were black. So I'm not used to seeing black ones in a PAL set.
AdamKoralik
Oh alright, didn't know that. I see black cased PAL PS2 a lot :/
Adam, I need to know if an American Original Xbox will run in the UK, and if so, how should I set it up safely? It's the Mountain Dew one, so do not want to fry it. Many thanks

I wonder if they named that store as a parody of Super Potato in Japan.
I was thinking the same...
Apparently not. The owner's name actually is Tom Amato, so he ran with it.
Ah, Gift by Eko Software. I remember Gift, Woody Woodpecker and Kaan (all for the PS2) have the exact same main menu type with the exact same white font 'n shit, even though the games are quite different.
