  • A set of commercials from Veterans Day 2003. These were broadcast during an episode of Primetime: Special Edition, covering Iraq War veteran Jessica Lynch (she was significantly wounded during the war and held prisoner, but subsequently rescued and healed).
Also of note, this was back when the screenbug was the "Vote 2004" one. Surprised they started using this early on, we were still just barely a year off from Election 2004.
Apologies about the "bumpy" picture. I tried re-recording in cases where it got really bad, but in other places it's a bit more noticeable.

Did you have a Technical Difficulties Slide out of KXAS or WFAA?

I thought ABC would have broadcast Saving Private Ryan that night. Wasn't that their Veterans Day tradition up until 2004 when the FCC started its huge crackdown?

Hm, I'm not sure. I figured by everything said in the special itself and the general time frame alluded to it being on that day, so I'm not sure why they would break that tradition.
What happened with the FCC, exactly? I'm unaware of this and now I'm intrigued.
EDIT: Okay, actually looked into it a bit...this special did indeed air Veterans Day 2003. But here's something that might have something to do with it; check out this article. www.nytimes.com/2004/11/12/business/media/abc-fought-the-preemption-of-private-ryan.html
WFAA, shockingly enough, happened to be one of the only stations that didn't show it in 2004! That still wouldn't explain why they would show this on Veterans Day though, Primetime is a national program and not just some random thing WFAA had, and like I said, the original airdate of this episode was indeed 11/11/2003, so that raises more questions if what you say is right.

Huh. So that also explains why I only have thirty minutes of the special as well; just prior to this is a recording of A Charlie Brown Christmas, which ran an hour that year and probably taped over it. I didn't know how long this special actually ran.
And oh man, looking at that TV schedule brought back so many memories. I remember how my family used to buy the Dallas Morning News every Sunday _just_ so we could get the TV guide. Used to stare at that guide all the time, looking for anything I would enjoy. Life without cable TV as a kid in the 2000s was a tough one!

After Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at Super Bowl XXXVIII, the FCC started hitting harder than ever against indecency on TV and radio.

I kind of miss over-the-air analog TV. Although we've had cable at our house since the late '80s (at least), we used to always have at least one TV hooked up to a pair of rabbit ears up until 2004 or so. Back then, in addition to the Cleveland stations in our home market, our antenna could also pick up stations from Youngstown that our cable company didn't pick up. On occasion, our antenna could also pick up stations from other distant markets, such as Toledo, Detroit, Steubenville/Wheeling and Pittsburgh, but we always had the Cleveland and Youngstown stations.

Huh. I never knew that. Course the TV guide (called TV Week in the DMN) never skewed in favor of any station, but I still never knew that. WFAA was one of my favorite stations growing up; helps I have a bit of an affinity for ABC anyway, heh.
