- More info about travel to Hydra: www.ricksteves... Only a 90-minute hydrofoil ride from bustling Athens, Hydra is the prettiest of the Greek isles. The community is an easy blend of workaday commerce, fancy yachts, and lazy tourists meandering through traffic-free streets, alongside the occasional donkey. #ricksteveseurope #greekislands #hydra

Rick Steves, America's most respected authority on European travel, writes European travel guidebooks, and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio.
I was there with a group in 1998 as a 16-year old teenager. Spetses, Hydra etc on a 1-week boat trip organized by a youth travel organization. Fond memories.
I was there in May of 2016...my 10th time to the Greek islands and second time on Hydra. It's the kind of place made for those who can do some walking. The day hikes are an escape from the world... If you want to experience Greece with no cars or motorbikes to drive you crazy... GO THERE AS SOON AS YOU CAN!! ((And for more than 1 day!)).
Thank you Rick Steves for capturing once again the simple pleasures we can enjoy on our beautiful planet!
I was there in 1979, on honeymoon, glad to see it hasn't changed much. We visited three islands and Hydra was one of the Islands on a two week vacation. We went for a day trip to Hydra liked it, and then decided to go back for another few days. While sitting on some ancient steps being photographed. I knew instantly that I had lived in the Greek Islands previously, in a past life, and had sat on those ancient steps.
Fascinating. When I first went abroad, to Rhodes, I felt strongly that in some strange way I had returned home. We went to several Greek islands, but only Rhodes, and maybe Kos, gave me that feeling.
We were just there and WOW what a neat place. I will go back
The "restaurant" turning out to be some friendly gray-haired guy's kitchen is the most Greek experience possible, and I mean that in a good way.
What is the name of this restaurant n how can I find it? Or make reservations
Beautiful... I have been here . That’s for sharing
I just traveled to Greece recently and spent a day on hydra. So cool to see exact places i was! Also try not getting lost because i found myself on the other side of the island with just the wilderness around me. What an amazing experience!
I go to hydra every year since 5 years
I'd love to live in Greece, traffic and smog- free tranquility.
Go play your video games you malaka!!!!

I went there and the city is so peaceful at night. Props
3000 residents? I was there in Sept 2017 and asked a local what the population was and he said it was 25,000. Charmian Clift and her husband lived on Hydra for 8 years in the 50s. They bought a house in 1954 and in her book "Peel me a lotus" written in 1959 Charmian stated that the population back then was 3000, and that many of the houses were empty. So one would think that there are more than 3000 residents, but Wikipedia records less than 2000 residents. So who knows?
Loved this trip so much
GOD BLESS THE FAITHFUL BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE AND THE BEAUTY OF GREECE FOR THEIR FAITH IN GOD HOSPITALITY FRIENDLINESS AND JOYFUL LIFE SHARING IT WITH OTHERS WHOM ARE WELCOMED

Wonderful memories living on this friendly island ~ My first Villa Sitting experience over 20 years ago! :^}
What a beautiful isle, Hydra it is!
I was told Leonard Cohen wrote his song Suzanne or Marianne in Hydra.
I don't know whether it's correct or not.
So long Marianne. He met Marianne, a Greek woman, in Hydra. They lived there together for about 10 years.
His house is still there including some of his belongings and partitures. He stayed there for several years and kept returning almost every year. He worked in many different jobs for income even as a fisherman. Some of his best life friends are locals (quite old nowdays) that organized an amazing night to honor his memory. His empty chair and guitar was there to remind him.
Actually, I've listened to his song, Marianne a few days ago. I hope I visit the isle soon.
He wrote Bird on The Wire there and maybe a couple of others. He also met Marianne, of the song, on the island. She was Norwegian and was living there with her husband and small child. She and Cohen started a relationship on Hydra which lasted a number of years. Marianne also appears on one his album covers, looking beautiful in a bikini sitting at his desk in his house on the island. She pre-deceased him by a few months in 2016.
Oh gosh, I realise the recency of these videos. Did you just return from a Europe trip or something? Very interesting videos! I have been to some of these places but the insights you have given are very useful.

Has anyone ever asked a donkey it’s opinion??...Poor creatures god bless them!!👀
