I am a black artist who draws mostly black people, but tries to dive into drawing other ethnic groups. My two cents is that you draw what you want as long as it isn't harmful (You know exactly what kind of illegal drawing I mean-). Artists should have the freedom to enjoy what they make without worrying about making people upset or being called racist. Art should make an artist happy.
Agree. Draw what you like. As a brown artist, I personally draw colourful array of casts because I like it. However, when it comes to creating media (comic, animation, etc.), diversity may actually come into consideration coz at that point, I am not my only main audience anymore
I wish more people understood that. You should have the right to draw what you want, as long as its not harmful. Art is meant for that. Perhaps professional artists have to learn it but hobbyist artists don't have the mandate for that. And why do people think that Asian people aren't poc? Same goes for brown people. People only think of black people for poc for some reason.
as a white person, I agree. However, when its a black person, you shouldnt just change all of their features, ESPECIALLY if the art isnt even anime(yall know who im talking abt)
I always had people ask me why I didn't draw black people ever since I was a kid and I've had a life time of guilt for not learning, then when I finally did it, it turned out awful and had even more guilt. Learning is a process we shouldn't be rushed or pressured into but instead we naturally fall into it on our journey of being an artist, if that makes sense(?). I'm not good with words haha but thank you so much for what you said in this video about drawing POC, it really changed my perspective on the situation and gave me a lot more confidence in what I draw ❤❤
TL;DR: Don't mind people, draw what you want how you want it, not drawing black people isn't racist! Same goes for "black features" because all you really need is a darker skin tone if you do want to, it's as simple as that in my book. Don't ever feel guilty! Honestly as a POC I always thought that all you need to make a black character is just to, well, add their skin tone. I have an anime art style, so I tend to not draw the big lips or noses that people tend to think all POC have to have. It's perfectly fine to just draw as you normally do and just add a skin tone, you really don't have to draw races a certain way because that's you're style you're comfortable with and people need to learn to accept that. Also, never feel forced to color your characters just to have "representation". It's really nice to have such but like if I go to a mcdonalds I'm not gonna walk in and demand chinese food for "better" representation, so if others want a specific type of art then they should go to the artists that *actually* draw that way instead of hounding others. Find commisions, etc!
You shouldn't feel pressured by others, you are free to draw whatever you want. It doesn't matter if you don't draw black people, it doesn't make you racist. Art is meant to allow you to draw what you want and not be pressured into drawing what people want you to draw
I've had the same exact problem with drawing Asians 😢 I always draw black people and I've gotten used to it but immediately I try drawing an asian, it's either they look Mexican for some reason or the stereotypical yet racist look which I feel bad after drawing, what do I do apart from practice and reference?
the line thinning tip ( 1:14 ) is good for people who aren't using pressure sensitive tool (Ie: drawing on a phone with their finger) so its harder to get line thickness variation where you want it. otherwise I agree about practicing.
1:42 this is actually great for people with disabilities. Not all of us can control the pen pressure when we draw. My hand shakes when i draw so my lineart is very inconsistent where I have to tense my arm and wrist up to minimize the shaking. I wish my art program had that.
This is old but, just in case, you also might want to see your doctor about the shakes if you haven't. Maybe you know what causes it and there isn't a solution, or you think there isn't, maybe you don't know. But my partner loves to do art and his shaky hands got really bad, he has some inherited disorder and he didn't think there was anything to do for it. But he went to the doctor and they put him on some kind of blockers (beta, maybe?) that he takes when he plans to do something that helps with his fine finger movement. Really not trying to be the one up in your medical business or anything, just posting in case it is helpful.
Someone else already mentioned brush stabilizer, so just in case you were looking for more tips, have you tried using the pen tool / vector path to make lineart? It can be done with a mouse and edited point by point. :)
I hate the idea that artists _have_ to draw all ethnicities in order to “not be racist”. No one should be told what they have to draw, and morality should not be tied to the feature set an artist gives his characters. Mangaka (or however it’s spelled) typically only draw Asian features-heck, the anime style tends to put Asian-esque features on _all_ races! Most people still find that acceptable. So if one artist only wants to draw people with an African sub set of features, that person should go right ahead. That applies to Europeans, Asians, Latin Americans, indigenous peoples, etc.
Right! because I hear so many people say "oh, you only draw pretty skinny white girls, where are the POC???" If they want to see colored people they can go draw it themselves🤷you can't force an artist to draw what you want just so that they fit in society.
I think ppl should really understand where their demanding representation from Honestly👀like I’m not gonna go watch a Kdrama to look for dark skin ppl just like how I’m not go on BET and look for white/asians.It’s kinda weird ppl will go to someone that draws a certain ethnicity and demand another one ain’t no one going to an African artist that draws realistic black ppl and tell them to draw asians wired asf to me honestly and this from a black person that mostly consumes black content 🙌
_"do a study and post it"_ was the most "at least study, even if you need to show you're doing it" I ever heard. Nobody knew, but she's actually _tricking people into actually studying!_
@@MartaW-vc7mc Sam seems mature enough not to hate someone based on the flavour of the week's internet drama. He handled it in his recent video with more grace than any other youtuber that is just milking it for the views.
@@MartaW-vc7mcI feel like Sam and Kooleen are like siblings, always fighting but they're still friends who got each other's back lmao. (Referring to when everyone got really upset about Kooleen's guideline and the joke she made a few years ago.)
I've had the same problem drawing non white characters. White is the "default" for many people and once you become accustomed to it you stop thinking about it 😔 I myself am a non white person and I'd like to be more inclusive of different skin tones but I feel like I can't show progress because people will think it's purposefully bad.
The same to me, i'm latin american and not white person but since I start to draw I always draw white people and like two black persons. But months ago I started to draw more black, latin american and Asian people! It still hard to me to fit the same skin colour but I'm doing my best and that's what it cares!
As a POC, almost all of my characters that are black have asian features because I've always been inspired by the anime artstyle and I think that's perfectly fine! Sometimes you don't have to worry about certain features, just focus on the coloring because there are plenty of black people that are either mixed or just simply have very similar face shapes to other ethnicities, even white people!
I'm also a POC but I've only ever drawn white people... I used to be scared of drawing my own race (Indian) because I thought I might get bagged for being 'racist' lol but I'm glad Sam has addressed this, I think I'll give it a go now
@@Eleanor458 This is not racist! I'm sick of people who don't understand this word and slap it on everything they don't like. Please stop thinking like that and start drawing your own race if you want. Also you don't have to show every drawing, nobody forces you to do it. Focus on doing your art the way you want. If anyone start calling you racist for being not skilled enough in drawing some races/ethnicities, just ignore them or even block them, they don't know about what they are talking about. Have a good day!
11:26 I recommend not using your finger to blend, since the oils in your skin smudges the graphite. It’s best to use a q-tip, tissue paper or blending stump.
@@R3innDoesSketchesI use a really dense, small makeup brush. It isn't as effective but does get the job done if you apply the graphite right. Doesn't make the same sound either
5:56 I just wanna point it out, EVERYONE in the world are ethnic since everyone has ethnicity. I noticed american people refers as "ethnic people" (just like this youtuber) when talking about black, asian, latin, arab people, etc but white people are just as human therefore they have ethnicity too (not only skin color - since theyre not transparent) but also culture and history as well. I am latina, but I wanted to point it out, let's stop referring to some people as "ethnic people" like some people are ethnic and others not, it makes no sense 😂 Don't wanna annoy anyone, so I am sorry if I come off as annoying, being irritated by that expression it's just a pet peeve of mine.
"americans" do not think this way... the entire world thinks this way. I'm american and I'm constantly trying to explain this to people. like literally mostly poc. white people have ethnicities too, lol.
@@reidleblanc3140No, the rest of the world knows this, dear. Only in the US is "POC" and "ethnic" a valid term. Jeez, another american who thinks they're smarter than everyone. Good job.
I understand what you’re saying, but people use the word ‘ethnic’ like they use the word ‘foreigner’. It’s a relative term. I don’t think he was trying to equate ‘ethnic’ with ‘non-white’, but considering this video is in English, it’s reasonable to assume the majority of watchers are probably white
Hi y'all! I draw characters with dark skin tones pretty often and I want to share some things that help me! Sometimes on very dark skin, strong shading may become too harsh or even not show up much at all, so adding extra brightness to areas that light is hitting can help add some more depth and balance that out. Use your light source to build height. For picking nice skin colors, I like to use a slightly desaturated dark red or orange to help add some natural blush to the whole body. Personally I do not find the lighter orange and yellow section of the color wheel to make very lifelike colors even for pale skin so I avoid it. Really just try not to use anything grayish because all skin has blood behind it. Obvi my advice isn't perfect but I hope somebody finds it useful! Look at lots of tutorials made by black artists and don't be afraid to try! 💕
it's basically a saw trap: if a person is unused to drawing a set of features, and attempts it and doesn't get it perfect on the first try, people will accuse them of racism. as though their inexperience is a sign of racism (which, as i hope you know, is fucking insanity). if they DO get it right (which, honestly, good on them), people will accuse them of racism because 'WHY DIDN'T YOU DRAW THIS SOOONNNEEEERRRR' basically terminally online people thinking that their preferences allow them to control others to only create for them and specifically for them only its pretty gross
It's best to ignore these people, they make up meanings for word racism instead of looking into vocabulary what it actually means, I'm so sick of that. Ignore or even block them, just like any nasty randoms who have nothing better to do than being toxic and rude. Also I'm 100% sure that they can't even draw any human face by themselves and then they jump on others.
this feels very dramatized and not accurate to what actually happens imo, and it's all very avoidable. just don't share your bad attempts until you're in a comfortable place with drawing new features! can't be "accused for being racist for not being perfect at first" (which sounds insane because it almost never happens) if you don't share it
@@blumoo9938 it doesn't matter if its good or not people will still talk shit and the ting is a lot of them aren't even poc just "speaking out for them" 🙄
oh god NO this is not how it works. kooleen got hate because she called a black persons features gorilla looking and called lips sausage lips, while completely changing their features and even whitewashing a white man.
Damn I want to see more guys because I'm into them, not because I see artists being sexists xD I can't properly draw guys myself and I'm too embarrassed to, because they LOOK at me when I draw them so I draw girls more often because of that anyway lol
“I don’t draw women bc I’m afraid someone will be offended.” Like there’s not a million artists or guides out there educating on how to draw different female bodies that doesn’t look like Playboy. 🙄 The same argument used for not drawing POC is so flimsy. In reality, that artist just can’t be bothered to expand or improve their craft. If you’re gonna wear the lazy hat, wear it proudly 😂 the phony excuses make my head hurt
@@InvisibleRen i'm not an artist, so I'm not as educated on this topic as others are. but i think that people should be allowed to draw what they want to, because it's THEIR art. they don't need an excuse for not wanting to draw something, because it's meant to be something that they do as a hobby...y'know, something they do to enjoy themselves? People shouldn't have to feel pressured into draw things that they don't want to. Should they broaden their horizons and try to step out of their comfort zone to improve? Probably, again I'm not sure because I'm not an artist. But that is a choice that they themselves should make. People can do what they want with their own art, and whether they choose to draw certain topics and step out of their comfort zone or not is their decision.
As a black artist who didn't know how to draw black people and got a lot of criticism growing up for it. It's better to practice and learn in private if it is something you wish to do and follow tutorials from actual black artist who make an effort to teach people so you don't come off as trying to be racist or anything really. I still don't know how to draw braids, locks, or curly hair but I try and I know I can always do better so keep practicing. Plus I find that learning how to draw other races, media, and different art forms can actually help you improve your knowledge as an artist so if in the future you have to do or make something for say a client, ur not gonna have any trouble creating it.
... maybe this is weird, but that lineart video really struck me. I think a lot of artists (including me!) forget that an eraser is just as much of a drawing tool as anything else. It's totally valid to purposely over-draw and then use the eraser to cut things away. The last video with the clouds re-emphasized that, too. An eraser isn't just for getting rid of mistakes; you can very much use it to create art in its own right. Yeah, I learned this in class at some point, but I always forget! I need to experiment with that more. Thanks, random TikTok videos. 😂
A Sam post right after a kooleen? hell YEAH Also"i see so many big artists that dont use water marks" because people recognize there art so well, that if someone tries to steal it,they will get bombared with hate, but if a smaller artist did that,no one would blink a eye.
All the other comments here have perfectly covered feedback for this subject. I'll say this for any tutorials or videos on UA-cam or elsewhere, that weaselly toony computer voice along with a few others and over used flavor of the day songs make it difficult to take some of these tutorials and tips seriously. Thank you so much for using your proper voice. It makes your videos and commentary much easier to follow and take seriously.
0:35 Sam, you can slander Kooleen all you want, but please, PLEASE acknowledge the other recommended tutorial channel was Saito Naoki! If you're not familiar with his work, he is a Japanese anime-style illustrator who gives advice and redraws works sent by viewers who need help identifying their own strong and weak points. He's energetic in a friendly way and has nice things to say about every submission. I totally recommend him, for the lessons and for the positivity.
Renaissance art always amazed me and seeing that short clip only amplified that, it's mind boggling to me how such dynamic painting comes from less colors than you think it does.
As an art baby, sometimes the art "community" is making me scared to draw:/ Edit: I didn't expect this to blow up but tysm for the likes and encouragement 🥺✨
Although some people in this community suck, if you find the right ones, we can be pretty accepting and supportive! Don't be afraid to draw, cause the first step is always just doing.
I draw since I can remember existing as an individual in the world, and truth is that you can just... draw. Honestly, the people who are very toxic and annoying are mostly just chronically online and a minority. Most people who do art are actually nice and will encourage and help you if you need, especially if you ever meet them in person. Also, I know it sounds crazy in this day and age, but I really advice you to not care too much abt what people think of you and your art. It's been almost 2 years since I last posted anything art-related anywhere bc I just... don't use social media anymore?? I just draw to myself, to make gifts for my close friends, and that's it. It did put an end to a lot of my insecurities. It's amazing if you want popularity, fame or even just sharing your art with the world, but it is not an obligation and you don't need it to validate what you do.
sometimes when you overcomplicate your brain when drawing, like you're always seeing tiny mistakes or sometimes you don't notice mistakes. What tends to help is to draw a sketch, and then leave it for a bit and do something else before you continue. This helps with viewing your art with new eyes. You can spot mistakes or spot things you forgot to add before.
I have done that but sometimes I gotta say it "fuck it we ball" because otherwise I would never finish it. I have way too many unfinished shit because of that.
Loved the video, just wanted to add to 5:00 about the price for commissions... what some of y'all don't understand, is how valuable dollars currency is in some other countries, like for example, 3 dollars is worth a full day pay of my 8hour job. It's not that people don't value their art, it's just that US dollars are worth a lot in some countries, and they set the price to what they feel is reasonable.
I am an artist on the so called global south and while I understand the rationale of your argument (USD buys more in these countries et al) selling yourself cheap isn't long term sustainable anywhere, not even in the cheapest countries. Two buck commissions may buy you the day's meal, but not a better living, nor enabling you to upgrade your gear to stay competitive, let alone have savings... and the list goes on and on. If all we have left to compete against the rest is price, we've already lost. Just something I felt the need to clear out.
@@alzamonart First off, much love, and sorry for the essay, it ended up longer than intended xD The case I was making was mostly for those who have 15 dollars or so commissions. In my case, I'd say 40 hours worth of pay for a 5 hour drawing is good enough. You are indeed correct that you shouldn't sell yourself and your art cheap, and that's what they're doing. As I said before it's not that they're selling themselves cheap, it's that they're setting a price they believe is fair, based on the time and the quality that they provide in comparison to a job they might have. Not to mention the competition in the industry to getting commisions and some traffic and interactions with costumers. Those who take 2 dollars for their commissions are like an entirely different story. They're either just trying to make some money off of their hobby or are just school kids making some pocket money. I'm a big believer in "your art speaks for itself". You don't see someone with sam's level of drawing going around doing commissions for 3 bucks. Last but not least, the people who are buying the 2 dollar commissions aren't really looking for quality content anyway. The 2 dollar artists aren't really stealing many costumers away, cause their costumers would rather have cheap meh art than normal/exceptional art that costs more. All that being said I feel like it's not really gonna matter much in 5 years with all these ai art apps surfacing. Sorry again for the rant, and feel free to discuss further if you have a different opinion
@@k.t.aidara3989 About the "aren't really stealing many costumers away": It's true. People who goes for low price products are never intended on gettin the ones that costs more. And same goes for AI products. If someone uses that then it means that person never intended to pay any money in the first place. And it can be understandable. Like as there are people who getting the products for D&D characters or online roleplaying. Or maybe they just like that person's product more. But to be honest, i personally happy about the advancements of AI, because this way it will become less of a privilege to make a png. And believe or not, but there are people who act on that way as if they were above others just because they draw stuff online (and usually the ones acting like that are making bad looking images, so the spoiled brat type of people), and the AI finally would give them a reality-check and maybe a huge slap.
5:41 this is soooo concerning, why is that person first reaction to possible criticism "oh i won't do it then"? What happened to drawing for yourself and only posting it if it turns out good? What happened to practicing and learning from mistakes? Holy shit, that was depressing
Because people are wild now. People literally are super disrespectful now. For example, the tiktok art community is very much known an hellbent in bullying every beginner artsist they see. That have literally made beginner artists quit their online presences altogether. We should learn altogether how to tell people to stop being annoying and block
3:43 honestly the most triggering part of this video. I refuse to believe that artists use canvas sizes that doesn't end with a zero outside of pixel artists and free-handed cropping. She didn't even round it up to 5!!
Hi Sam, just wanted to say I really appreciate you and your channel. You really helped me understand where to start my artistic journey (for about two years I tried to learn to draw from other channels that I didn't realize were aimed at people with more experience) and also inspired me to return to drawing after a few weeks I had no motivation for it at all. I just recently discovered your channel and I'm already starting to see how I have more desire to draw and more tools to improve my art. Thank you❤
Thank you for giving a realistic critique on tik tok “tutorials!” It is difficult for aspiring artists who cannot afford art school to find reliable advice when it’s buried in a sea of useless information! I appreciate your videos because it has valid points, and you’re also a great artist!
When my niece first started her art career. I gave you the tools i love to use when sketching traditionally. And the one tip i gave them (which applies to the cleaning up line art trick) is “you can draw with your eraser” to refine shapes, clean you sketch into nice lineart, add line weight. So much more.
Honestly as a person who is absolutely terrible at lineart, once I figured to try and just clean up the sketch instead of lining it, I drew 2 of my favourite things that I’ve ever done. Up until that point I used to go for a no lineart style and while it sometimes worked and looked great, I was really bummed that I couldn’t go for a more comic book style, since my lineart skills sucked. Of course the sketch cleanup technique probably isn’t the most efficient and I do eventually want to get better at lining, it’s super helpful for the time being.
I used to draw regularly as a kid but then some time after 16 I just stopped. I wasnt bad or anything and I enjoyed it but a lot of life circumstances got in the way. I then became disabled and about 5 years ago I started drawing again because I had the free time and it helped me get my mind off the pain. I always drew on paper but I wanted to learn digital drawing. I was lucky enough to receive a used ipad and apple pencil from some incredible friends for my birthday this year and I had no idea how to start. I started with youtube drawing tutorials and speedpaint vids and honestly, Im so glad I did. I have learned so many different techniques and how to use Procreate. Im not sure why this would be considered a negative because in such a short amount of time I have learned an incredible amount of information and I enjoy drawing regularly now.
About the 2 dolar commission, literally the most annoying customers are the ones who have paid the less, the ome who paid 10 dolars always are like "can you cuange this?" "Oh I changed my mind make it look like before" " oh sorry, can you make them wear this other clothes?" And they kept me days with a 10$ commission when I would be ready to move onto another one, whilst the expensive ones's customers are super wholesome and tolerant, that is another reason why you shouldn't charge so low, prices are like a filter, they filter the annoying ones from the ones who respect you, your craft and your time.
7:50 no because I once used 6 canvases for an art piece. I wasn’t being indecisive, I wanted to make it so all the books on the bookshelf could be individualized in case someone asked for a book :3 (nobody asked for a book)
I mean, big artists not using watermarks is probably because everyone knows their work. Artists who are new or unknown probably should watermark to help combat stealing and get their name out at least. So she not entirely wrong lol.
It doesn't combat stealing, but yeah if you want to get your name out there it's not a bad idea, but you don't have to cover the drawing with it for that.
Nobody wants to steal your violet-eyed Sonic OC. Draw and practise, draw and post. If some terminally online attention-starved pissant parades around with your jpeg claiming it's theirs, eff 'em. Ignore them. You're drawing so much you've already left that piece far behind.
@@vermis8344 ????? *Practice. There's no need for all that. ☠ But I understand what you're getting at. A lot of artist can't just get over their art being taken even if it's some weird OC nonsense you're describing. Not asking for advise about it I'm just pointing out people watermark with purpose.
The last video "how to draw a realistic cloud" is actually pretty good. I would also say 10/10 for explaining how to draw them. Some of the others look like scammers compared to this. 🤭 Good tip for everyone again... draw or paint a lot and get familiar with your medium seeing the subject with different perspectives does help too. It only gets better with practise and it's less frustrating to draw the things you see around you. Draw a friend or even the fruit on a kitchen table. It doesn't matter what it is but over time there will be visible progress.
here’s my art tip: you don’t have to post everything you draw, especially if you’re learning to draw something new. for everyone afraid of learning to draw fat people, Black people, disabled people, etc because of criticism while you’re learning, it is totally fine to learn and make mistakes in private. i post very little of the art i make, even the art I’m really proud of, because in the end I’m making it for the love of making it. that isn’t to say you can only post polished and complete work, but you don’t need to feel like you have to share every little thing if you’re worried about what people will say.
I don't share my art online but I'm worried about my family or friends seeing it, I feel like if I draw a POC person and mess up and they see it they'll make fun of me.
@@gianna526 I'm 32 and living on my own and sometimes I draw stuff that even I find silly or weird, but it gives me freedom to draw it. Usually I chuck it afterwards, unless I did it well. A while ago, someone joked about a sheep seductively twerking and I drew it (realistically, not cartoon!) and kept it. Some Welsh people thought it was hilarious when I shared it online, some English folk responded too, I made them a foxy fox to match. There's nothing you shouldn't draw, nothing. you can draw anyone and anything.
At this point... I don't care what ppl say Sam does Art is like an actual art teacher and koolen is just the cool hip teacher preferably I would listen to both of them.
6:14 I do live Caricature sketches for living and out of the thousands of people of different skin colors and backgrounds I have drawn, only two people complained about the skin color, and even so, they were minor complains that didn't ruin the sale.
I think for the tip on drawing confident, I think it is good outside of knowledge. We cant be expected to understand or remember everything we study everytime we draw, sometimes you try and try and it just doesnt come out right. In those cases its better to "fail" with confidence i suppose? Acting like you know what you're doing will help you in the moment and it will come across better. But i don't mean to get complacent, we should always be studying and striving to understand and get better.
What’s wrong with watching soeedpaints for motivation and learning? Sure, they definitely can only help you learn so much, but when I was a young unskilled artist, speedpaints taught me more than the tutorials did. And now I watch them to relax and also show myself how beautiful the art process is.
I don't think he was criticizing that part, but he was making fun of Kooleen 😭 Speedpaints are an excellent way to study how other artists do what they do (helped me improve immensely when I first started out because I had no idea what I was doing)
As someone who is also afraid of drawing Black and POC characters, it's terrifying to try and risk being torn apart by others. It doesn't matter what the intent was if it was done wrong, people on the internet are going to perceive it however they wish. I've seen it enough times, especially on twitter bc it's like an echo chamber. Of course it's possible to do art studies without sharing them (which I am planning to do), but overall I love drawing and creating fanart of my favorite shows and books and sharing them as a way to connect and communicate with others.
It's always ok practice! I can't really draw asian features without same face syndrome yet, so I do fast studies, and don't let ppl see them until I'm comfortable! Just keep working on it, and you'll grow ☺
Black people have very diverse features and many races features overlap with one another. If anything, people are trying too hard to be progressive and end up becoming a bit regressive in that they stereotype black people and other POC to only having certain features. As long as you don't make any ignorant comments in regards to the features, you'd be fine aside from the people that will always find a way to hate.
just draw from observation, so many of these baby artists start straight up with cartoony and anime styles (i was one of those artists) but DONT DO THAT cus it will totally stunt your growth as an artist. always take time to draw from observation, if all your references are just other ppls art your art will always be a product of their design philosophy and not your own interpretation of different people, objects, or subjects. the reason why so many ppl cant draw black ppl is because black representation in anime and cartoons is still pretty new, and thats where so many young artists take inspiration
The 'tutorial' at 5:20 is the epitome of "damned if you do, damned if you don't". Some Gen Zers are as bad about being judgmental as previous generations, if not worse, and delude themselves into thinking they're not.
That approach with cleaning your sketch layer instead of doing line art is actually why I'm still drawing. I drew like about 7 years (not active learning, but still) and I just couldn't draw freaking line art. My sketch always was better and line art was ugly as hell. I tried numerous times, but just couldn't make it ACCEPTABLE, let alone good. I actually tried to clean sketches before and it still was better then my line, but I always thought that I'm doing something wrong and that I must learn how to do clean line art. I just hated myself at this point, that was incrediblty frustrating. And then I saw one of my favorite artists just joking about them not doing line art, but cleaning sketches instead. I tried to copy their brushes and then started to clean sketches again. And my god, that was actually pretty good looking. and that was SATISFYING. That was gamechanger for me. So, I want to say do not fear to alter your workflow, and try to find brushes you're comfortable with (send to ass all the artists who screams brushes don't matter while still using downloaded brushes themselves)
I’m boutta use that liquify tip actually. Wonder if I can make the lines thicker. Yes, I know, “make it right the first time,” but also having the ability to edit it is nice
Sam: you don't need 100 layers Me, who makes Vtuber models: yes, you're right...I need more if I want to make something better but I don't have patience.
I have figured out REALLY quick, the social media gods have decided that it is where most artists go to die. Social media is for other artists to enjoy artist content. It creates a lot of self confidence issues, motivation issues, and honestly just makes you feel less than. Just like body image and self love, art is about falling in love with YOUR art and finding those people who love your art for what you add!
6:05 this is such a good take. no one bats an eye if you draw white people wrong but if you screw up a feature of a non-white character people get pissed and pick apart every little thing about the artwork
Water marks are important for small artist because not everyone knows them and if they have a generic art style it gets even harder to know who made it
I don’t recommended using your finger to blend graphite just because the oils from your fingers can make it hard to erase. What I do recommend is using your finger to blend acrylic paint, it works really well. Of course it’s still your art so do whatever you want!!
Honestly, I've been studying art for several years and I've never seen someone "trick people into thinking you draw good". If you are confident in the stroke it's because you exercised many times, not because you see a trick on tik tok
"My stuff isn't good enough for me to feel comfortable selling it yet" is why I'm not doing commissions on bookbinding. Have I made some things I love and that I thought were damn good pieces? Yes. Have I done it consistently? No. Not in the slightest. I wouldn't charge less than $50 for them because the labour involved is worth at least that, but I'm not charging at all until I know I can give someone a $50 product reliably
This is making me laugh so hard. Tablets were still a concept when I went to art school. The few programs we did have took hours to fully render anything at all. I literally had 24X36 pads of newsprint filled with ellipses and circles. we spent 3 straight weeks just learning how to draw an ellipse! LMAO
"how to trick people into thinking you're good at art" "theyll think you're mastering your craft" what are we, magicians now? 😭 do we have to TRICK PEOPLE into thinking we know what we're doing, is that what we doing now? 💀
i just assume it's because they're already a god, and i bet 80k likes there is because art is good. explanation is pretty bad for most part, but i take a grain of salt because we are bad at explaing stuff. outside the fact it's about tricking and pretending to be good, i'm neutral for most of it.
Can you cover on how to draw more plus-sized characters? (If you do draw more plus sized characters cause i havent seen you drawn any) because you're one of my favorites :)
I now learned that drawings with good backgrounds are way more interesting, I still have struggles with them but its clear that if i never do them i will never get better at it 😌 so bg are great

People only think of black people for poc for some reason.
i think the main issue was refer to a common black feature as “ew gorilla looking”
as a white person, I agree. However, when its a black person, you shouldnt just change all of their features, ESPECIALLY if the art isnt even anime(yall know who im talking abt)
❤
I'm black and even I don't know how to properly draw and paint black characters so don't feel guilty about it
I've had the same exact problem with drawing Asians 😢 I always draw black people and I've gotten used to it but immediately I try drawing an asian, it's either they look Mexican for some reason or the stereotypical yet racist look which I feel bad after drawing, what do I do apart from practice and reference?
@@jesulani9548 those are the only things you can do tbh just practice until you get good
the line thinning tip ( 1:14 ) is good for people who aren't using pressure sensitive tool (Ie: drawing on a phone with their finger) so its harder to get line thickness variation where you want it. otherwise I agree about practicing.
It could also be helpful for people who are just heavy handed lol
Aka me. 😭
I was stoked when I saw this tip. I use a knock-off Apple pencil that isn't pressure sensitive.
@@chynaanderson494 ey same! Mine broke a while ago and haven’t gotten a replacement, but it also doesn’t have pressure sensitivity
My Apple Pencil won't draw if I edit the pressure curve on ProCreate, so this is really helpful for me
1:42 this is actually great for people with disabilities. Not all of us can control the pen pressure when we draw. My hand shakes when i draw so my lineart is very inconsistent where I have to tense my arm and wrist up to minimize the shaking. I wish my art program had that.
@kurootetsuroushyenalaugh5580 Oh I know! unfortunately its not in my budget, but maybe one day haha
Most digital art apps also have a line stabilizer somewhere in the settings, so the lines are not shaky anymore. Just a tip
@@dailytrash8540 I'm an artist, so I know this /nm /gen
Thanks for being so brave. Tell this to the world.
Right! because I hear so many people say "oh, you only draw pretty skinny white girls, where are the POC???"
If they want to see colored people they can go draw it themselves🤷you can't force an artist to draw what you want just so that they fit in society.
I think ppl should really understand where their demanding representation from
Honestly👀like I’m not gonna go watch a Kdrama to look for dark skin ppl just like how I’m not go on BET and look for white/asians.It’s kinda weird ppl will go to someone that draws a certain ethnicity and demand another one ain’t no one going to an African artist that draws realistic black ppl and tell them to draw asians wired asf to me honestly and this from a black person that mostly consumes black content 🙌

The same to me, i'm latin american and not white person but since I start to draw I always draw white people and like two black persons. But months ago I started to draw more black, latin american and Asian people! It still hard to me to fit the same skin colour but I'm doing my best and that's what it cares!
Thank you @soffacouch . I'm glad you can relate but you are pushing through and making progress :) good luck your art journey!

it's basically a saw trap: if a person is unused to drawing a set of features, and attempts it and doesn't get it perfect on the first try, people will accuse them of racism. as though their inexperience is a sign of racism (which, as i hope you know, is fucking insanity). if they DO get it right (which, honestly, good on them), people will accuse them of racism because 'WHY DIDN'T YOU DRAW THIS SOOONNNEEEERRRR'
basically terminally online people thinking that their preferences allow them to control others to only create for them and specifically for them only
its pretty gross

The art community can be full of crazies sometimes
sometimes when you overcomplicate your brain when drawing, like you're always seeing tiny mistakes or sometimes you don't notice mistakes.

@@alzamonart First off, much love, and sorry for the essay, it ended up longer than intended xD
The case I was making was mostly for those who have 15 dollars or so commissions.

I have one art tip for art babies. Whenever you finish a piece, note what you like and dont like about it and use those notes on your next piece.
Oooh great idea. I thought I would just repeat what mistakes I made. Lol
glad i could help
Ohhh ty
i could tell hihi@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme
About the 2 dolar commission, literally the most annoying customers are the ones who have paid the less, the ome who paid 10 dolars always are like "can you cuange this?" "Oh I changed my mind make it look like before" " oh sorry, can you make them wear this other clothes?" And they kept me days with a 10$ commission when I would be ready to move onto another one, whilst the expensive ones's customers are super wholesome and tolerant, that is another reason why you shouldn't charge so low, prices are like a filter, they filter the annoying ones from the ones who respect you, your craft and your time.
“You don’t need 105 layers, if you do you need help for your indecisiveness” that was such a call out ☹️
I just hoard my layers OKAY?!?
7:50 no because I once used 6 canvases for an art piece. I wasn’t being indecisive, I wanted to make it so all the books on the bookshelf could be individualized in case someone asked for a book :3 (nobody asked for a book)
I mean, big artists not using watermarks is probably because everyone knows their work. Artists who are new or unknown probably should watermark to help combat stealing and get their name out at least. So she not entirely wrong lol.
Not evirely wrong no but that won't make people see you as a better artist lol
No it won't I was agreeing that watermarking is important in some ways not that it would make someone a better artist. @@kaiheejeu
Sam's reactions and suggestions on these tiktoks are excellent, but can we appreciate how good Sam's hair is?
2:52 WHY DID THE LIKE BUTTON CIRCLE IN RAINBOW WHEN SAM SAID “like this video” 😨
Thats.. what yt does when someone says “like this video”
The last video "how to draw a realistic cloud" is actually pretty good. I would also say 10/10 for explaining how to draw them.
Some of the others look like scammers compared to this. 🤭
Good tip for everyone again... draw or paint a lot and get familiar with your medium seeing the subject with different perspectives does help too.
Thank you so much, you are a amazing artist and I have used your tips in my art
love sam always helps me and gives me motivation to draw ive been drawing alot this past week from waching his videos ❤
Those afraid to draw other races forget one simple rule, you don’t have to share every damn thing you draw.
Yessss!!!
What?! Whaaaat?! You mean don't tap the shiny button on your smartphone screen for that 30 second dopamine pellet? How would that even work?
I don't share my art online but I'm worried about my family or friends seeing it, I feel like if I draw a POC person and mess up and they see it they'll make fun of me.
@@gianna526
I'm 32 and living on my own and sometimes I draw stuff that even I find silly or weird, but it gives me freedom to draw it.
I don't care what ppl say Sam does Art is like an actual art teacher and koolen is just the cool hip teacher preferably I would listen to both of them.
i love listening to your calm voice
7:56 sam: “you don’t need 150 layers. You really don’t”
Me on 400+ layers : “huh… what?”
Hello, fbi? There it is, arrest them
This really is just listening to you yelling in lower case, and I appreciate it.
6:14 I do live Caricature sketches for living and out of the thousands of people of different skin colors and backgrounds I have drawn, only two people complained about the skin color, and even so, they were minor complains that didn't ruin the sale.
9:31
Yeah Renaissance, MY BOY LEONARDO DE VINCHI!!!
9:05 I had to wake up from my unconscious consumer stage for that like what the Hell?!?
Ur vids are making me so comfy and I love listen to you

I love how his smile fades into nothingness
I don't think he was criticizing that part, but he was making fun of Kooleen 😭
Speedpaints are an excellent way to study how other artists do what they do (helped me improve immensely when I first started out because I had no idea what I was doing)
As long as you don't make any ignorant comments in regards to the features, you'd be fine aside from the people that will always find a way to hate.
just draw from observation, so many of these baby artists start straight up with cartoony and anime styles (i was one of those artists) but DONT DO THAT cus it will totally stunt your growth as an artist. always take time to draw from observation, if all your references are just other ppls art your art will always be a product of their design philosophy and not your own interpretation of different people, objects, or subjects. the reason why so many ppl cant draw black ppl is because black representation in anime and cartoons is still pretty new, and thats where so many young artists take inspiration
just practice not giving a shit, it'll do wonders
Black ppl are human. Focus on that.
Sam got angrier and angrier with each video 😂
I’m boutta use that liquify tip actually. Wonder if I can make the lines thicker. Yes, I know, “make it right the first time,” but also having the ability to edit it is nice
"Don't run away from your responsibilties" had me sit up a little straighter.. 😂😂
Sam roasting kooleen will always be funny 😂❤
Kooleen AND Sam does a post in the same day??? I’m blessed 🙏🏾
fr😭😭
They often do
Sam: you don't need 100 layers
Me, who makes Vtuber models: yes, you're right...I need more if I want to make something better but I don't have patience.

THE FIRST TIME SAM SAID KOOLEEN INSTEAD OF KOOL AID?? NOT CLICKBAIT?!?!?!111??!1
That renaissance painting was maybe one of the coolest paintings I've seen.
10:53 Well that caught me off guard 😂
Honestly, I've been studying art for several years and I've never seen someone "trick people into thinking you draw good". If you are confident in the stroke it's because you exercised many times, not because you see a trick on tik tok
2:05 gets irritated.. continues to watch carefully
LMAO
"I hate tic tok".....you are a man after my own heart
"how to trick people into thinking you're good at art" "theyll think you're mastering your craft" what are we, magicians now? 😭 do we have to TRICK PEOPLE into thinking we know what we're doing, is that what we doing now? 💀
i just assume it's because they're already a god, and i bet 80k likes there is because art is good. explanation is pretty bad for most part, but i take a grain of salt because we are bad at explaing stuff.
outside the fact it's about tricking and pretending to be good, i'm neutral for most of it.
The first video was so wholesome 🥺
Can you cover on how to draw more plus-sized characters? (If you do draw more plus sized characters cause i havent seen you drawn any) because you're one of my favorites :)
I just love watching his videos 😂🤍
0:09 the sword used to slay his enemies
Like koolaid
When Sam posts a art video you know it’s going to be a good day
Your videos genuienly make me feel better. So chill and I always have no problem watching all the way through. Keep it going Sam :)
I now learned that drawings with good backgrounds are way more interesting, I still have struggles with them but its clear that if i never do them i will never get better at it 😌 so bg are great
actually i wish koolen and Sam would be friends ❤
