I find myself at a loss for words. I love music but am no musician, yet I can FEEL the extraordinary discipline and skill it took to perform this piece so sublimely. This is astounding. Bravo.
I honestly love this piece so much and this recording of it. Like it has become something that I'm basically listening to every waking moment right now
As a player using printed music on a stand, there's always a slight disconnect between you and the actual musical intent. There's an immersion, a synthesis with the music that can only come from playing from memory. Having 20+ professional musicians on stage, all caught up in that "flow," is breathtaking. This must have been an exhilarating performance, especially for those in the first few rows!
Instead of following a conductor, they are feeling each other. It makes a difference. Probably not as possible with works demanding a bigger orchestra but works really well here.
That was amazing! Having performed this many times as a cellist, I know the piece well, but have never heard it played so beautifully. I love the memorized aspect… it is a lot of work and what a payoff!!! Love to you all!!!!
This spectacular performance enchants me entirely, makes me smile beginning to end. Even makes me wish I lived in Boston. Here's hoping y'all keep on keepin' on till I can make it to Boston to hear AFC live!
This performance realizes the vision in my mind of this piece. Freedom from a "third-party" (conductor) and 2nd-hand information (sheet music) is the only way this can be done, as you have demonstrated. I am grateful for this powerful example - the highest level of music making - and the work it took to achieve this goal. Bravi tutti!
Fabulous! Soaring virtuosity, wonderfully shaped long lines, never heavyhanded, always lightness and motion to the conclusion of the line. It really breathes. The sound and intonation are above reproach. Playing from memory allows an unencumbered communication between the players which we normally only hear in chamber music. The impression is that of a large string quintet. It is also delightful to see all the bows being used in exactly the same way. I am certain Tchaikovsky would be thrilled. Bravo!
Bruce Whitson - thank you so much for your beautiful words! We are so fortunate and grateful to have such appreciative listeners like you. Looking forward to seeing you at one of our next concerts or live streams. Happy holidays from the criers...
Thank you! Nice to see that the 3rd & 4th movements are now online. I stand by my previous praise - what a masterful performance! One thing which would help the overall impression is, at least in the version I just watched, the 3rd & 4th movements suffer occasionally from the picture and sound being out of sync, particularly in the Finale. Otherwise, this is a performance which sets new standards! Bravo!!
Bruce Whitson, thanks for the heads up! We'll be putting up a better synced version in the next week or two. Happy new year to you and hope to see you in 2017!
What to say from a distant land to people who are lucky enough and blessed to get an opportunity to watch these maestros at work live ? I enjoyed thoroughly, enjoyment of another kind! Blessed indeed : everybody!
Utterly entrancing performance, by far the most dynamic on UA-cam. Besides the music, which was mesmerising, I loved to see the orchestra members actually move and express themselves -- it added to the overall emotion of the piece. A tour de force -- bravo!
You're not a Far Cry, but a cry near by! Just behind my eyes... I was stunned and moved. You don't only play this masterful, but you master this! Wow...never heard or seen such a performance.
This performance sounds to me very much like my imprinted favorite by the London Symphony orchestra once directed by Igor Markevitch and from a so much smaller group without a director.. Amazing ! Thank you very much to you all for this splendid rendition.
Hans von Bulow would have approved! (He insisted that the Berlin Philharmonic play from memory.) This is an extraordinarily beautiful performance of a great work.
Hello my name is Ikser Mijares. congratulations for such an excellent string orchestra. I am a Venezuelan composer and I have works for strings that I would like to share with you.
Hello Isker, please feel free to email info@afarcry.org with more information and it will be directed to the right people who take a look at new pieces :) Thanks for listening!!
My favorite recording of this piece! Personal opinion, ensembles look better when they're seated instead of standing and moving a whole bunch. What do you all think?
I love the energy and flow of a standing group--they put their whole body and soul into the music and it has a freedom that sitting doesn't often capture. The intense connections between the musicians are so clear and direct when standing and looking at each other, with no music stands in the way.... If it bothers you to watch, just close your eyes and enjoy the cascade of glorious sound that emanates from those amazing musicians....
"Egos" moviendose a diestro y siniestro....todos queriendo existir y creando una escenografia hueca. La música transmite sentimientos auténticos, y lamentablemente esto esta muy lejos, llegando a vanalizarla.Eso si, grandes músicos y mucho trabajo pero en eso se queda en un "show de circo".
Speed up in forte and slow down in piano? They need a conductor and way more players. Metamorphosen under Scott Yoo was the best string orchestra Boston ever had. There is no interpretation here.
This "Tchaikovsky" character should consider themselves lucky that they haven't been sued by Paul Simon. What a shameless ripoff of "American Tune"! ;) ;) ;)

Thank you so much for your kind words, Preston! So happy you enjoyed it!

I played this recording for my father at his death bed. Thank you.

Wonderful! It all holds together in a great, unified statement. A far cry from sterile notes on the page.

The best recording I've seen... so much energy!

Yes! Come to Boston - we would love to see you! :)
Il n'y a pas de mot.....c'est merveilleux et je l'adore Tchaikovsky...

I come from a choral background. I've always loved the more intimate, interactive atmosphere of a strings chamber group. It really is a joy to watch 😊
Absolutely. There's magic in hearing the actual, unamplified sound of a performance, up close.
Wonderful performance!! I keep playing this again and again.......
What to say from a distant land to people who are lucky enough and blessed to get an opportunity to watch these maestros at work live ? I enjoyed thoroughly, enjoyment of another kind! Blessed indeed : everybody!
Amazing. Love the energy by all, especially the male 2nd violinist.
Tchaikovsky's favorite W. A. Mozart is certainly happy in the artistic sky. Great music! Greetings from Czech Republic.

so much energy and peace from start to finish.
Honestly y'all are amazing 😍😍
Thanks so much, Tyler! We couldn't do it at all without the support of our wonderful audiences for sure :)

instantly subscribed.
Thank you for this!
Incroyable énergie de jouer sans partitions !!
Il est des sentiments si intraduisibles qu'il faut la musique pour les suggérer.
Oooooooo My Good......

not if they memorized. It's a TREAT.

Y la coreografía exagerada...como para qué???

why is first position violinist wearing WHITE SOCKS?
LOL - They are actually sparkly gold flats - but I see what you mean!
This "Tchaikovsky" character should consider themselves lucky that they haven't been sued by Paul Simon. What a shameless ripoff of "American Tune"! ;) ;) ;)
Horrible los movimientos exagerados de violinistas
I love the movement!
I love it--it shows their entire involvement with the music. don't look if it bothers you--just enjoy the sublime music....
Without a maestro, you guys get the tempo wrong, and got speeding up... No good.
