Hey all! This is a clip from my Chuggington Retrospective, don't worry, I have a new video coming out next week! Reposting this as it's own video for anyone who missed it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Chuggington’s engines had their faces as a part of the engine, even the steam engines (similar to some of the Diesels in the Railway Series). Most Thomas characters have grey faces that stand out from the rest of the engine
But if they keep continuing Chuggington, I’ll make a video on how I can destroy Chuggington toys when I buy them but they’re only in Japan so that’s bad
I don’t think Chuggington is a rip off because Thomas didn’t create talking trains. Plus, Chuggington is at the very least, a good show when you look at it on its own unlike a certain Mighty Express.
Got 2 questions 1st Chuggington is a show more for ADHD Thomas and Friends is a show more for autism 2nd to me Chuggington is quite a Thomas ripoff abit
You know, it’s a little Ironic that Thomas & Friends never got a crossover with Chuggington despite them being “indirect parallel versions” of each other; that would have been nice though to see the Trainees meet the Number 1 engine of Sodor and his friends…
This is the same way I view the whole Bob the Builder vs Handy Manny thing because they may look the same at first glance but when you take a look closer they’re so much different
I’ll always be a Thomas-stan, but growing up, I always respected Chugginton as its own thing. I appreciated both ways the shows told their stories. Can’t say the same nowadays though, because I’d rather binge Season 1 of Chugginton than watch a single HIT/Miller Era episode of T&F.
I’m going to be honest while initially ‘Chuggington’ took some inspiration from Thomas, I think one could make a better argument that Thomas ripped of ‘Chuggington’. From the bouncing engines, the faster pace, etc. I mean AEG essentially has their own version of Action Chugger. Though I think the concept is slightly better executed in AEG as the super hero has a super villain, while ‘Chuggington’ only has the super hero and no villain to contrast it. Honestly modern Thomas seems to be trying to be more like ‘Chuggington’, than ‘Chuggington’ ever tried to be like Thomas.
You should give “Busy Buses” a watch. There’s one episode that really seems inspired by something hmmm.. A double decker bus getting stuck under a bridge? To take a short cut to pick up the passengers for the train.
@@keanes8608I blame the CGI not aging well, and the odd middle ground between static and lipsynced mouths the show tried to create. P.S. My 2 favorite episodes from that show are “Susan Goes Pink” and “Rick The Racing Bus”.
I find Chuggington to be odd for other reasons. The modern, hyperactive style of the show (Seriously, all those locos bouncing about and literally jumping on the tracks, a health and safety nightmare!) , which has been called into question whether it diminishes kids' attention spans, the very gimmicky aspects that seem like additions for the sake of selling toys, and the weird tracks which directly look like something from a toy train. The original intention of Thomas seemed to have been to be grounded in actual railways, rather than the flashy, more imaginary style of Chuggington.
This is true. Aside from a few wacky episodes during its weakest eras, Thomas generally felt like a show about real trains that just so happen to have faces. They still obey the laws of physics, run on realistic-looking track, and deal with challenges that real railways have historically encountered. Whereas Chuggington doesn't even try to have a semblance of realism! I'm not saying either one of these shows is better or worse. They're completely different things that appeal to different kinds of viewers. I'm glad the ADHD kids have something they can enjoy and relate to, but my tastes happen to have more in common with the autistic kids.
Scuse me for going all witchy but I think you're onto something; Thomas is built on lunar energy (realism, quiet, chill vibes) wheres Chuggington is Thomas's equal and opposite as shown by it's abundance of solar energy (loud, fast, bright, hyperactive). That's what's wrong with current kids shows, sun and moon need to work together and balance each other out. Sorry if I accidentally said something offensive or sounded a bit too crazy.
You forgot to mention how in the Marvelous Machinery special, Gordon had a magnet stuck to him which turned him into a magnet HMMMMMMMMM now what was THAT based off of?
Nobody can convince me that Gordon with the magnet wasn’t a jab at Wilson getting magnetized by the crane car. It would’ve been even funnier if it had happened to Harrison instead of Wilson XD
I think i remember watching it. At least somewhat It is clearly different. I also loved geotrax as a kid so there's also that. Not the same idea but a train show nonetheless
'Chugginton copying Thomas & Friends' is like 'Friday the 13th copying Halloween'. In both cases, there was an original intention to base the newer franchise (Chuggington & Friday the 13th) on the existing one (Thomas & Friends & Halloween), however, as time went on, they both grew apart and became their own thing. Some fans nowadays even argue that Friday the 13th stole from Halloween, which isn't wrong, as it took inspiration the basis, but in depends on the direction where each franchise wants to go in. For the horror films, they both have a male serial killer that had trauma as a child, and is now seeking revenge for those who did them wrong and continue to do them wrong. In the talking trains, there are three main characters that venture out and have stories along the way. They are similar but also different. People can still argue about 'this' stealing 'that' but that's just from inspiration from others in creating (in some cases, but not all) better franchises.

As someone who is both a thomas and friends fan and a chuggington fan. I think both shows are great. I feel like people should accept their differences as opposed to comparing them. Literally the only evidence they have is that they are both about talking trains. Neither of those shows own the rights to talking, sentient trains. Everything else is just inspiration from each other Another thing you forgot to mention is characters from thomas are meant to feel more realistic and need a driver and firemen to run. Chuggington characters feel more sentient and unrealistic being able to run on their own. But still I love both shows and chuggington really doesn’t deserve the hate that it does

I never saw chuggington as a Thomas rip-off personally, neither as a child nor as i grew up, not even when i learned of DICK and his intentions of making the show. First of all, it being a show about talking trains didn't say much, as you said, Thomas didn't invent talking trains, it's like saying that Pixar's CARS is a rip off of the 1952 Disney short "Susie The Little Blue Coupe" just because they're both about sentient Cars, and because the creator of CARS had some inspiration from that short (atleast i heard so). Second, Chuggington just never had a vibe to me like Thomas did, Chuggington is much moure bouncy, energetic and colorful, while Thomas is (or was) famously among the fans much more in touch with the rules of the real world, and, maybe not all, but many seasons were slower and more peaceful, so Chuggington, even with it's feel, isn't that similar to Thomas, of course there were slower episodes like "Outward Bound Olwin", or "Old Puffer Pete's Tour", but generally, there is always something going on. Thank you so so much for making the retrospective, it is a fair critique of the series as it's own thing, while not comparing it to Thomas too much, and keeping T&F not so forced into the picture, but not completely kicking it out either. Hmm, since you're doing comparisons of talking train media, have you ever seen Robot Trains? It's a Korean cgi cartoon that's a rough mix of transformers, dragonball, and Trains. My son absolutely loves it, it replaced Thomas for him completely. Just be prepared for massive tonal whiplash between season 1 and 2.
I'm not very familiar with Chuggington; I don't recall watching it a lot growing up. But I never saw it as a ripoff of Thomas. Thomas maybe the most popular piece of media involving talking trains, but it certainly isn't the first example, and even if it was, I still consider the concept too basic to make any similar work afterwards a ripoff. It's like calling Godzilla a ripoff of King Kong because they're both giant monster movies. Also, I wouldn't really say Thomas was ripping off Chugginton due to getting bouncier and cartoonier overtime either, seeing as cartoony trains have existed even before Thomas did. Chuggington might've influenced the direction Thomas would eventually undertake, given its popularity, but saying it was ripped off sounds like a stretch.
In my opinion chuggington was sort of a rip off because they creator wanted to basically one up Thomas and Friends with some aspects being a little similar
I don’t see this show as a rip off of Thomas. I can see it as its own thing. There are plenty of other train shows out there, and they arn’t considered Thomas ripoffs, so why should this show be any different.
If it wasn't for Thomas, Chuggington wouldn't exist. But then again, Chuggington has many differences. If Chuggington is a rip-off of Thomas, then by that logic Sonic is a rip-off of Mario.
@@benysamson5800 I see that it's a joke, but Cars movie came out way more recently than Thomas books were written so I really think that they were the 1st who invented talking trains.

If it wasn't for Thomas, Chuggington wouldn't exist. But then again, Chuggington has many differences. If Chuggington is a rip-off of Thomas, then by that logic Sonic is a rip-off of Mario.
Eh little but Thomas more kick off at this point. Can see this by new art but this better.
Not in negative way, but you said, that Thomas didn't invent talking trains, then who did it? Who was first?
Lightning McQueen, lol just kidding
@@benysamson5800 I see that it's a joke, but Cars movie came out way more recently than Thomas books were written so I really think that they were the 1st who invented talking trains.
1:40 literally the only similarity they have is their skin color.
