Very underrated channel and very underrated review. As a Tomix collector myself I do believe that this is the range that people should get into. I have all the trains and rolling-stock that they made unfortunately I don’t have the accessories but it’s a shame how Tomix didn’t make many models as I feel it is better than Bachmann’s N Scale range but that’s another story.
I use N scale as my main modeling type, and I never even knew these were N scale. Makes sense for N scale to be the most popular scale in Japan as Kato is the biggest N scale producer and it’s from Japan.
I think the CGI face was really a massive upgrade to these. The original Thomas face is decent, better than some, but it does have a weird uncanny thing. You can at least say that they absolutely nailed the accuracy of the CGI face, and like with the new Bachmann ones I think the CGI faces really work when it comes to n scale. I’m not sure why. I do wish the Tomix line had been able to flourish more. Scale issues aside, they really nailed the aesthetic. That line of troublesome trucks that Henry is pulling just looks so classic, and nothing else comes close. Great video overall, I’d love to see more n scale stuff from you!
The CGI faces do look very accurate, I've just never been a fan of them. The old face somehow looks good from some angles and uncanny from other angles. I agree that the rolling stock does look great together! I just wish they had painted the sides, and made some of the other rolling stock that they had planned. Thank you for watching!
The older one has a proper crankpin on the middle wheel whereas the newer one doesnt, and is split chassis, so it picks up through the chassis block, which means the axles are plastic on the middle,and the chassis block is split into two halves. i didnt know they changed the mechanism and such, but its great to see this pointed out
I totally forgot I had read that it was split chassis! That was also the case with James, so I'll make sure to mention it in that video. I never realized that the middle wheel on the newer one isn't connected. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm begging you to review Henry soon too that consist he was pulling looks so awesome. As a big fan of the Bachmann N scale line as of late this video definitely made me appreciate the Tomix engines a lot more than I have. I know as a kid I really wanted these and was super bummed by the fact that they weren't available in the US because like you said, HO scale took up a lot of room in my house! While I get what you're saying about the model era face of this Thomas, I personally really like it. The editing in this was very well done as well, great job Dan!
Henry video will definitely be coming, likely after the James video. Same, as a kid I always wanted these but they were impossible to get. the best Thomas line? Yes, but it would be helpful to regauge them to be proportional. I think TT3 is about right. The uncanny issue is just because the eyes arent round enough, and the pupils are too small.

@@DansTrainRoom considering that I’ve turned a Bachmann Thomas face into a pretty decent Series 1 inspired freelance, I don’t think it would be much work at all with the Tomix one. It’s mainly the eyes that need attention anyways
This engine is certainly quite a good one! But I honestly am glad Bachman made an n scale one. It’s really nice, absurdly small, and it’s even more impressively downsized that the tomix one! All in all though both are good.
@@DansTrainRoom honestly yeah! Especially with how simple it is. Just a simple lil worm gear doing all the work! Though the downside is that it’s way too slow… but I still love it. Maybe one day I’ll get my hands on the Tomix version too! I just wish n gauge had a more consistent coupling system. Like how Hornby and Bachman have the hook and loop, while Walthers and many others have the classic spring loaded knuckle. (And some have the plastic knuckle style ones that are one solid piece. I hate those older ones.)

The N Scale Thomas is so oversized, it doesn't fit some NMRA Tunnels. That being said, though I do prefer the Bachmann N Scale thomas (the Tomix looks creepy! Why are his eyes so sunken!) I LOVE these coaches. Claribel having a luggage compartment makes her better than most any of the pair I've ever seen.

Genuinely shocked you got this for less than £20. The only ones I can find are above £150, and despite Henry being very common he's always at £300!
Online they're ridiculously expensive, but if you can find them in-store in Japan they can be very cheap!
