- Many songs from the Tamil Films have been ignored periodically for reasons best known to no one. Especially, never or rarely attempted in any reality shows, stage shows or competitions.
When the nation is on a Quarantine, Subhasree Thanikachalam launches this new series.
This series will feature a set of rare songs that are rarely heard, rarely performed and she will also try and give some trivia for the songs.
The songs will all be performed by young singers who came out of her shows, which mainly focussed on old songs. The sessions are unplugged and performed with minimum instrumentation. No retakes. One stretch live performance..

இந்த படம் வந்த போது எனக்கு பத்து வயது இருக்கலாம். ஏதோ ஒரு வேளையில் நான் ஆழ்ந்து உறங்கி கொண்டிருந்தேன். வீட்டில் வானொலியில் இந்த பாடல் ஒலித்து கொண்டிருந்தது. தூக்கம் மெதுவாக கலைய தொடங்கியது. அந்த அரை உறக்கத்தில் இந்த பாடல் என்னை ஏதோ செய்தது. இது போன்று எத்தனையோ இசை ஞானியின் பாடல் என் தூக்கத்தை கலைத்திருக்கிறது. அவர் வந்த காலத்திலிருந்தே அவரின் இசைக்கு அடிமையாகி போயிருக்கிறோம் என்பதே வளர்ந்த பிறகு தான் புரிந்தது. அந்த காலங்களில் எந்த நிகழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தாலும் இந்த பாடல் ஒலித்தால் ஓடோடி சென்று கேட்பேன். அப்போதெல்லாம் திருமண நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் கச்சேரிகள் மிக ஆபூர்வமாக தான் நடக்கும். அவைகள் தேர்ந்த கலைஞர்களுடன் நூறு சதவிகிதம் உண்மையான இசை கருவிகளுடன் நடக்கும். இன்று இருப்பது போல் கீபோர்டை கொண்டு ஏமாற்று வேலை எல்லாம் இருக்காது. யார் வீட்டு திருமணமாக இருந்தாலும் எந்த கூச்சமும் இல்லாமல் உள்ளே நுழைந்து அங்கு போய் உட்கார்ந்து இந்த பாடல்களை கேட்பதுண்டு. அரை தூக்கத்தில் இந்த பாடலை கேட்ட நாள் இன்றும் மறக்கவில்லை. ராசய்யாவின் இது போன்ற பாடல்களை கேட்டு விழுந்தவன் இன்றும் எழுந்திருக்கவில்லை. ஞானியாரே நீவிர் வாழ்க. அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்கும் உமது இசை பல்கலைக்கழகமாக இருக்கும். வாழ்க உமது இசை தொண்டு.

ONE-of-a-KIND composition and that too in 1979 itself. Genius again! It needed a Kamal Haasan + Sridevi (nothing less). Both would have done ample justice combined with a good choreographer. But, it was shoddily picturized, with pathetic choreography, on an aged actor & a younger heroine. Maestro IR music NEVER ages; even his 1970s songs just have to be reproduced in today's format like Putham pudhu kaalai was. It will take to millions of views then. HERE, the guitar parts of the original song are not justified, and of course, SPB & SJ combo is something else; but otherwise, a very good presentation.
Agree with your sentiment. Perhaps like 'Putham pudhu poo poothatho' and 'dhoorathil naan kanda un mugam ', this song shouldn't have been picturized at all. Maybe then this song would have had better chances of gaining popularity. Oh well, classics eventually do get their day in the sun.

There is another song of IR similar to this, in Kannada "Jeeva Hoovagide" (sung by SJ & Rajkumar); sadly, how many people from other states including TN know about it? Unlike some musicians like Keeravani, Sharreth, MJ, MGS, DSP, Hamsalekha etc. (all NON-Tamils) who have been very vocal about the genius of Maestro IR, Tamil artists and the people of his own state have let him down by underplaying his achievements OR by keeping hush-hush OR by trying to squish his genius down.

A request to Subhasree mam...please explain how these songs are made, the steps involved, how the music and voices are coordinated so wonderfully from various places? please enlighten novices like me how the voices (even that are sung outdoors) sound crystal clear, how the background noises don't show up etc. May be you can make a separate video about this. If you close your eyes you will feel group of orchestra is performing. His style of singing also very good and he is very sincere in the pronunciation. Venkat always good and clean job. @@onsury oh! Is it? Quite a news to me! This song is from Ananda Kummi I guess, for which Raja was the composer.
Narasimhan, a violinist and later on a conductor for Raja, scored music for films like Achchamillai Achchamillai.
Sorry the song that I meant was "Then mazhaiyile dhinam nanayum yen nenjame..." This is by Ilayaraja only.

This was a forgotten song for me from the childhood. A couple of years back, the song came up as a UA-cam recommendation and it was going back on time travel.
In the subsequent searches, I was enlightened on the history of this song and learned that this was the first song recorded by Ilayaraja in Stereo.
I went on all the way up to acquiring a LP record of the movie album. I just wanted to hear the original song from the original source, i.e. the LP Record.

Both singers have done justice to this song with their fantastic rendition. This song is a hidden gem that has probably not received as much press as IR's other popular songs. IR's music composition is mesmerizing and was sung beautifully by the legendary Late SPB and S. Janaki.
