I remember the very first time I watched the originals, something in me got drawn towards all of originals siblings(including Finn) especially towards Klaus. I remember when I first watched season 1 trailer, I instantly fell in love with the plot and character of Klaus. I love TO so much despite the heart wrecking ending of Klaus sacrifice, I rate 9.5 star to TO. The 5 percent is my dislike against the producer's ending plot killing Klaus

Klaus and Hayley were something else, something special. They would have made a great power couple and a perfect little family, in their own way. We waited seasons for this to happen, but it never did. Klaus deseved the chance to be a good father and raise his daughter, to love and be happy with someone. These characters have such beautiful stories and yet they had to be killed off all of a sudden. I fell their story is unfinised, incomplete.

When Elijah is forced to watch the woman he loves die, Antoinette, he asks klaus "Is this revenge, force me to watch her just to show me how it feels?" Even in his compromised state Elijah knows that he didnt just kill the mother of klaus' daughter, he killed the women klaus had loved. The women who had understood him even when he was terrible. Yes. Klaus wanted to love caroline but she never allowed him to and just because caroline realized he wasn't the person she thought he was doesnt mean she loved him. Klaus and caroline are perfect examples of two people would had chemistry but not love. Hayley loved klaus but in beginning thought Elijah was what was best for her and her daughter. And married jackson because it was what was best for hope to have the loyalty of the wolves. But over time klaus grew up and hayley realized he had finally become the man she had always saw in him and was ready to love him. Unfortunately they both sacrificed they're love for each to protect hope.

But at the end of the day Elijah couldn't accept his darkness - his mother told him that if he looked nice and acted nice no one would know he was a monster and that's how he lived noble with his suits keeping his word to try and excuse the fact that he's done the same things as klaus - furthermore he couldn't except hayley's darkness. Hayley fought when she was provoked and felt it was best, she had a degree of broken that aligns with klaus. Theres a line klaus says to Elijah saying that he shouldn't judge hayley. That's sums up the end of their relationship Elijah judged hayley for what she did while simultaneously having the red door and his darkness.

I think he did love her but was distracted in season 1 by marcel. When he started to realize he had real feelings for her she was already in love with Elijah and he saw how happy Elijah was with her. I think eventually his romantic feelings for her changed into "mother of my child" and best friends feelings without him even knowing.
