  • Gene Austin is somewhat of an under rated singer and composer here in the 21st century. He certainly still has legion of fans that gravitate toward the great recordings of the 20's, 30's and beyond, but the average person on the street today probably never heard of him.
His recording career started out with a bang in the 1920's with a string of hits he composed and performed such as "When My Sugar Goes Down the Street (all the little birdies go tweet-tweet-tweet.)" Man, they just don't write lyrics like that anymore! Followed by other early hit songs "How Come You Do Me Like You Do?", "The Lonesome Road" among others.
Flash ahead to the 1940's and you can see that Gene Austin was still going strong and performing great material. "I Want to Be Bad" is a film that Gene made in 1944 for the Soundies Corporation (to be played in their movie juke boxes called the Panoram). A lot of the song's merriment can be attributed to the co-singer in this movie, Doris Sherrell, who just happened to be Mrs. Gene Austin at the time. Doris performs some pretty spot-on impersonations of Mae West, Zasu Pitts, Baby Snooks, Jimmy Durante among others during this production. "I Want to Be Bad" is an infectious song and one that I think you'll find yourself humming a lot after you hear it. It's nice that this Soundies movie was made so we can both hear and see the performance. Thanks, Gene!

Doesn't seem like a proper title for the song presented.
Especially considering there was a late 1920s song with similar title but everything else different!

I downloaded this and used an audio editor to remove the baby-talk and Durante impersonation so I could actually listen to the song
