Underground art film shot on Marlboro commercial set (1958)
I’m a 16mm film collector and have been one for decades. One of the things I collect are old TV commercials, especially ones that played on TV in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. One particular commercial I got in really grabbed my attention. It appears to be an underground art film shot on a Marlboro commercial set. My guess this was done in the nighttime- when the regular staff had gone home- by some of the rogue crew members at the advertising agency which produced this commercial for their client.
I always thought this was shot in the late 1950’s, and doing a little research I came across a website that gave the complete history of Marlboro cigarettes. Turns out in 1958, Marlboro introduced to the public a soft pack of cigarettes (as opposed to their harder, flip-top box). This is mentioned in this faux-commercial that their cigarettes are now available in “the new soft pack.”
There was a lot to lose by making this faux-commercial and especially risky. This being done in the late 1950’s and what the morality was like back then, the client Marlboro would throw a fit if they got wind of what some of the production company’s employees did after hours. Certainly, those who were involved in making this would, in all probability, lose their job- and it’s very possible Marlboro would have severed ties with this ad agency, plus word would probably get out that this is how the ad agency treats their client’s products. After all, they are showing the client’s product on screen, plus using their theme music, and there is nudity! (I would have liked to have posted this without the black bar censorship, but I don’t think UA-cam would allow that, not to mention Facebook, where it will ultimately show up as well). There are some curious other moments in the film as well. The man wearing the ape mask (obviously to cover up his identity) as well as the odd tattoos that show up on the men’s wrists and the women’s breast.
If anyone out there can shed more light of who made this underground art film and why, and maybe clarify some of the questions and comments I have, it would be most appreciated. In the meantime- enjoy! (But, hey, remember that smoking is bad for your health!)

Cliff Edwards is in fine form in this film although he only sings and speaks a few lines in this production, as most of the running time is used to spotlight singer and dancer Marion Colby. Not sure if you saw my last week's message re UCLA (YT can be wonky with messages). Repeating message below on a different video posting now: Through an LOC connection I have, I managed to get UCLA Film Archives to pull their version of F&F for a footage count. According to the LOC, the abridged version is 560ft, or about 15 minutes.. We’ll see what UCLA reports as their footage “in the next several weeks”. Hopefully, it’s a lot more, in which case I think I might be able to purchase a copy (but that is certainly not definite yet). I’ll keep you posted.
Not sure if you saw my reply (below) which I left at "High Sea Blues", so I'm repeating it here: I have some disappointing news. I’ve just received the Library’s FAST AND FURIOUS and it looks like it is no better than what is already out there, in terms of new material. That is, it starts with Lige in the window, already holding up the sign, then it abruptly changes to another scene, etc. It lacks the lead-up that you described. I haven’t gone and compared scene-for-scene yet, but I am not hopeful about obtaining any “new” material. It would appear that an abridged 16mm version of the film was redistributed at some point and this is it. The full version is apparently a very rare item. I checked and the BFI does not have it. Sorry I couldn’t find it.
I thought I had already replied, but maybe I never clicked on the reply button. When the owner of the Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles retired, he sold the collection (all 16mm) to David Packard (of Hewlett-Packard fame). When he died, his widow donated the collection to the UCLA Film Archives, so they should have the print. Maybe you have access to their archives- I don't know, but thanks for all the research you did. I enjoy looking at all the movies you post. -Barry

@@josephblough4403 It certainly is an elusive title to see complete! As mentioned before, the film also has an additional stop-motion animated segement which probably runs 25 to 30 seconds. This is also the best of the stop-motion segments. Oh, well... maybe someday a complete print will surface...

I made movies from 1970 to 1975. I made one more in 1976 or '77, but because I used footage from stag reels and such, I wouldn't be able to post it on UA-cam. I'll be posting another one of the films I made later this year.

Not really, two completely different styles for two different styles of music. Its like saying that metal guitar is painful to watch after watching Gypsy jazz guitar
He and Paul Martin were neck in neck, I think. But he absolutely owns the banjo, plus he had huge musicality that knew the precise chords and chord shapes in order to play both the melody and the backup. He was an absolute pleasure. There's a place in heaven for guys like that, who bring such joy.

This commercial was burned into my memory as a 5-year-old kid. It gave me an impression of Seattle that stuck with me throughout my young life, and so when I had the opportunity to be stationed up there in the 1980s while I was in the Navy, I jumped on it -- and I wasn't disappointed. I took my family up the Space Needle back then and it was indeed a wonder; and the views were spectacular on the day we picked to go. The memory of this commercial immediately came to the fore and has stuck with me since. Still live in WA, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Now, if only the residents of Seattle would clean up the mess they created by voting in a bunch of Bolsheviks to sit on the City Council. This is nothing like the Seattle I remember from the 60s and the 80s.

Mel Blanc had the courage to mimic Arthur Q. Bryan's Elmer Fudd well after Arthur Bryan's passing. However, you guys should not be confused with Dave Barry's Elmer Fudd (or one of the buffaloes pictured in Columbia's "Lo, the Poor Buffal"). But keep in mind however, that Dave Barry (the actor) passed away in 2001 at the age of 82.

There's something that has Arthur Q. Bryan in it that I'm trying to find. I haven't seen it before, but I've read about it. I've read that he narrates a short (might have been long, I'm not sure) educational thing about how to be a cop. Searching How To Be a Police Officer, which I believe is the title of the thing comes up with a ton of results that I'm not even sure are what I'm trying to find. If anyone has an upload here on UA-cam or could upload it, please link me. Rest in peace to Arthur Q. Bryan.

This just goes to show how long it took DVD to become the big star of the 1960s . Many years working various radio and TV jobs , mostly in the south after being an radio person in the service before he hit it big . During this time his singing and dancing talents were hidden .

John Medbury was primarily a comedy writer. He wrote for many comedians, including George Burns and Gracie Allen- and was their head writer on radio for a time.
What I like about this film is that it has joke after joke- some of which are pretty corny, but infectious, none the less!
George and Gracie used to babysit my Mama.

These commercials were originally seen in 1958 (the "Big G" logo began appearing on all General Mills cereals in 1960). To get your "Space Station Kit", you sent 50 cents and a Sugar Jets box top by mail to "Space Station Kit, Box 773, Minnepolis 1, Minnesota".
HI Barry- You're sure about 1958? I've been trying to find out the exact year of these commercials. There is no identifying code on the film stock so I can't verify the year. Doing a bit of research I found that the first space stations were in 1965, so that's why I listed the film as 1965, however, I agree that the kids don't look like they're from the mid-60's, more like the late 50's as you suggest. I guess one way that you know for sure the age of the film is how General Mills has their logo design on the cereal box. Do I have this right?

David- I showed the film to a friend who knows a lot about golf and he claims the caddy is actually played by a championship golfer. Sorry, I don't remember the golfer's name, but at least I now know that this person isn't just an actor, but an actual golfer well known in his time.
