Just a tip from someone that does some minor custom paintwork, normally you don't sand with that fine of grit before primer because you want to give the paint a surface to adhere to. Sanding with 800 makes it smooth, yes, but will have a much larger chance off failing. After you spray your clear and it cures, then you can sand any orange peel with with wet sanding to whatever grit you decide. Also, you could use a flat black for your base, as you are going to clear it anyway. Use minimal amount of base/color coats (to save money and wait times) and try repairing and defects (orange peel, minor scratches, etc) with your clear coats. I'm not talking shit, just wanted to see if I could help out with any future projects. And spraying metallics by aerosol (spray can) can be tricky, keep shaking the can ALL THE TIME and keep a good distance during your final coats. Cheers and good luck!
A little advice on how to avoid those pesky runs, and orange peel too. Whenever possible you want to be spraying your paint down onto your surface. Rather than painting the rocket while it’s in a vertical position, see if you can orient it horizontally instead. Painting perpendicular to the pull of gravity can result in orange peel and runs. Paint works best when it is sprayed downward, toward the surface and in line with the direction of gravity. The force of gravity can then help pull the paint onto and across the surface more evenly providing a smoother finish.
Did u have any issues painting over that gloss black.. i have a shitload of trouble i tried painting over gloss i had to wait 7 days im not sure whatni did
If you recoat quickly, within 20 minutes or so , it generally works out okay. However, humidity can make a big difference in the outcome and I know Kansas has a fair bit of it from time to time! It's always an interesting fight with paint.
